We generalize the analysis by Moore and Witten in [arXiv:hep-th/9709193], and consider integration over the u-plane in Donaldson theory with surface operators on a smooth four-manifold X. Several novel aspects will be developed in the process; like a physical interpretation of the "ramified" Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants, and the concept of curved surface operators which are necessarily topological at the outset. Elegant physical proofs -- rooted in R-anomaly cancellations and modular invariance over the u-plane -- of various seminal results in four-dimensional geometric topology obtained by Kronheimer and Mrowka [1,2] -- such as a universal formula relating the "ramified" and ordinary Donaldson invariants, and a generalization of the celebrated Thom conjecture -- will be furnished. Wall-crossing and blow-up formulas of these "ramified" invariants which have not been computed in the mathematical literature before, as well as a generalization and a Seiberg-Witten analog of the universal formula as implied by an electric-magnetic duality of trivially-embedded surface operators in X, will also be presented, among other things.
We analyze the u-plane contribution to Donaldson invariants of a four-manifold X. For $b_2^+(X)>1$, this contribution vanishes, but for $b_2^+=1$, the Donaldson invariants must be written as the sum of a u-plane integral and an SW contribution. The u-plane integrals are quite intricate, but can be analyzed in great detail and even calculated. By analyzing the u-plane integrals, the relation of Donaldson theory to N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be described much more fully, the relation of Donaldson invariants to SW theory can be generalized to four-manifolds not of simple type, and i…
There are two families of Donaldson invariants for the complex projective plane, corresponding to the SU(2)-gauge theory and the SO(3)-gauge theory with non-trivial Stiefel-Whitney class. In 1997 Moore and Witten conjectured that the regularized u-plane integral on the complex projective plane gives the generating functions for these invariants. In earlier work the second two authors proved the conjecture for the SO(3)-gauge theory. Here we complete the proof of the conjecture by confirming the claim for the SU(2)-gauge theory. As a consequence, we find that the SU(2) Donaldson invariants for …
We compute the Moore-Witten regularized u-plane integral on CP^1 x CP^1 directly in a chamber where the elliptic unfolding technique fails to work. This allows us to determine explicit formulas for its SU(2) and SO(3)-Donaldson invariants in terms of Mock modular forms.
We revisit the $u$-plane integral of the topologically twisted $\mathcal{N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theory, the Donaldson-Witten theory, on a closed four-manifold $X$ with embedded surfaces that support supersymmetric surface operators. This integral mathematically corresponds to the generating function of the ramified Donaldson invariants of $X$. By including a $\overline{\mathcal{Q}}$-exact deformation to the $u$-plane integral we are able to re-express its integrand in terms of a total derivative with respect to an indefinite theta function, a special kind of mock modular form. We show that for…
This paper studies geometric engineering, in the simplest possible case of rank one (Abelian) gauge theory on the affine plane and the resolved conifold. We recall the identification between Nekrasov's partition function and a version of refined Donaldson-Thomas theory, and study the relationship between the underlying vector spaces. Using a purity result, we identify the vector space underlying refined Donaldson-Thomas theory on the conifold geometry as the exterior space of the space of polynomial functions on the affine plane, with the (Lefschetz) SL(2)-action on the threefold side being du…
This paper is a continuation of author's previous work arXiv:1911.07949, where we defined Donaldson-Thomas invariants of quantum Fermat threefolds. In this paper, we study the generic quantum Fermat threefold. We give explicit local models for Hilbert schemes of points as quivers with potential, and compute degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants. The result is expressed in terms of certain colored plane partitions.
Hilbert scheme topological invariants of plane curve singularities are identified to framed threefold stable pair invariants. As a result, the conjecture of Oblomkov and Shende on HOMFLY polynomials of links of plane curve singularities is given a Calabi-Yau threefold interpretation. The motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory developed by M. Kontsevich and the third author then yields natural motivic invariants for algebraic knots. This construction is motivated by previous work of V. Shende, C. Vafa and the first author on the large $N$ duality derivation of the above conjecture.
Eguchi, Ooguri, and Tachikawa recently conjectured a new moonshine phenomenon. They conjecture that the coefficients of a certain mock modular form H(tau), which arises from the K3 surface elliptic genus, are sums of dimensions of irreducible representations of the Mathieu group M24. We prove that H(tau) surprisingly also plays a significant role in the theory of Donaldson invariants. We prove that the Moore-Witten u-plane integrals for H(tau) are the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2. This result then implies a moonshine phenomenon where these invariants conjecturally are expressions in the …
We compute the Moore-Witten regularized u-plane integral on CP^2, and we confirm their conjecture that it is the generating function for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2. We prove this conjecture using the theory of mock theta functions and harmonic Maass forms. We also derive further such generating functions for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants with 2N_f massless monopoles using the geometry of certain rational elliptic surfaces (N_f=0,2,3,4). We show that the partition function for N_f=4 is nearly modular. When combined with one of Ramanujan's mock theta functions, we obtain a weight 1/…
We study the Donaldson-Witten function in four-dimensional topological gauge theory which is constructed from N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory with $N_f < 4$ massless fundamental hypermultiplets. When $N_f = 2,3$, the strong-coupling singularities with multiple massless monopoles appear in the moduli space (the u-plane) of the Coulomb branch. We show that the invariants made out of such singularities exhibit a property which is similar to the one expected for four-manifolds of generalized simple type.
We study Coulomb branch (``u-plane'') integrals for $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $SU(2),SO(3)$ Yang-Mills theory on 4-manifolds $X$ of $b_1(X)>0, b_2^+(X)=1$. Using wall-crossing arguments we derive expressions for the Donaldson invariants for manifolds with $b_1(X)>0, b_2^+(X)>0$. Explicit expressions for $X=\IC P^1 \times F_g$, where $F_g$ is a Riemann surface of genus $g$ are obtained using Kronecker's double series identity. The result might be useful in future studies of quantum cohomology.
Using the u-plane integral of Moore and Witten, we derive a simple expression for the Donaldson invariants of $Σ_g \times S^2$, where $Σ_g$ is a Riemann surface of genus g. This expression generalizes a theorem of Morgan and Szabo for g=1 to any genus g. We give two applications of our results: (1) We derive Thaddeus' formulae for the intersection pairings on the moduli space of rank two stable bundles over a Riemann surface. (2) We derive the eigenvalue spectrum of the Fukaya-Floer cohomology of $Σ_g \times S^1$.
We compute the elliptic genus of the D1/D7 brane system in flat space, finding a non-trivial dependence on the number of D7 branes, and provide an F-theory interpretation of the result. We show that the JK-residues contributing to the elliptic genus are in one-to-one correspondence with coloured plane partitions and that the elliptic genus can be written as a chiral correlator of vertex operators on the torus. We also study the quantum mechanical system describing D0/D6 bound states on a circle, which leads to a plethystic exponential formula that can be connected to the M-theory graviton inde…
We derive two multivariate generating functions for three-dimensional Young diagrams (also called plane partitions). The variables correspond to a colouring of the boxes according to a finite Abelian subgroup G of SO(3). We use the vertex operator methods of Okounkov--Reshetikhin--Vafa for the easy case G = Z/n; to handle the considerably more difficult case G=Z/2 x Z/2, we will also use a refinement of the author's recent q--enumeration of pyramid partitions. In the appendix, we relate the diagram generating functions to the Donaldson-Thomas partition functions of the orbifold C^3/G. We find …
We generalise the analysis in [arXiv:0904.1744] to superspace, and explicitly prove that for any embedding of surface operators in a general, twisted N=2 pure abelian theory on an arbitrary four-manifold, the parameters transform naturally under the SL(2,Z) duality of the theory. However, for nontrivially-embedded surface operators, exact S-duality holds if and only if the "quantum" parameter effectively vanishes, while the overall SL(2,Z) duality holds up to a c-number at most, regardless. Nevertheless, this observation sets the stage for a physical proof of a remarkable mathematical result b…
We introduce moduli spaces of stable perverse coherent systems on small crepant resolutions of Calabi-Yau 3-folds and consider their Donaldson-Thomas type counting invariants. The stability depends on the choice of a component (= a chamber) in the complement of finitely many lines (= walls) in the plane. We determine all walls and compute generating functions of invariants for all choices of chambers when the Calabi-Yau is the resolved conifold. For suitable choices of chambers, our invariants are specialized to Donaldson-Thomas, Pandharipande-Thomas and Szendroi invariants.
The u-plane integral is the contribution of the Coulomb branch to correlation functions of N=2 gauge theory on a compact four-manifold. We consider the u-plane integral for correlators of point and surface observables of topologically twisted theories with gauge group SU(2), for an arbitrary four-manifold with (b1,b2+)=(0,1). The u-plane contribution equals the full correlator in the absence of Seiberg-Witten contributions at strong coupling, and coincides with the mathematically defined Donaldson invariants in such cases. We demonstrate that the u-plane correlators are efficiently determined …
We derive an exact closed-form representation for the Euclidean thermal Green function of the two-dimensional (2D) free massless scalar field in coordinate space. This can be interpreted as the real part of a complex analytic function of a variable that conformally maps the infinite strip $-\infty<x<\infty$ ($0<τ<β$) of the $z=x+iτ$ ($τ$: imaginary time) plane into the upper-half-plane. Use of the Cauchy-Riemann conditions, then allows us to identify the dual thermal Green function as the imaginary part of that function.
We revisit the low-energy effective $U(1)$ action of topologically twisted $\mathcal N=2$ SYM theory with gauge group of rank one on a generic oriented smooth 4-manifold $X$ with nontrivial fundamental group. After including a specific new set of $\mathcal Q$-exact operators to the known action, we express the integrand of the path integral of the low-energy $U(1)$ theory as an anti-holomorphic derivative. This allows us to use the theory of mock modular forms and indefinite theta functions for the explicit evaluation of correlation functions of the theory, including but not restricted to thos…
We introduce an algebraic theory of integration on quantum planes and other braided spaces. In the one dimensional case we obtain a novel picture of the Jackson $q$-integral as indefinite integration on the braided group of functions in one variable $x$. Here $x$ is treated with braid statistics $q$ rather than the usual bosonic or Grassmann ones. We show that the definite integral $\int x$ can also be evaluated algebraically as multiples of the integral of a $q$-Gaussian, with $x$ remaining as a bosonic scaling variable associated with the $q$-deformation. Further composing our algebraic inte…
We present a star product for noncommutative spaces of Lie type, including the so called ``canonical'' case by introducing a central generator, which is compatible with translations and admits a simple, manageable definition of an invariant integral. A quasi-cyclicity property for the latter is shown to hold, which reduces to exact cyclicity when the adjoint representation of the underlying Lie algebra is traceless. Several explicit examples illuminate the formalism, dealing with kappa-Minkowski spacetime and the Heisenberg algebra (``canonical'' noncommutative 2-plane).
