We study the moduli space M(G,A) of flat G-bundles on an Abelian surface A, where G is a compact, simple, simply connected, connected Lie group. Equivalently, M(G,A) is the (coarse) moduli space of s-equivalence classes of holomorphic semi-stable G_C-bundles with trivial Chern classes where G_C is the complexified group.
M(G,A) has the structure of a hyperkahler orbifold. We show that when G is Sp(n) or SU(n), M(G,A) has a natural hyperkahler desingularization which we exhibit as a moduli space of G_C-bundles with an altered stability condition. In this way, we obtain the two known families of hyperkahler manifolds, the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface and the generalized Kummer varieties. We show that for G not Sp(n) or SU(n), the moduli space M(G,A) does not admit a hyperkahler resolution, in fact, it does not have a crepant resolution.
Inspired by the physicists Vafa and Zaslow, Batyrev and Dais define ``stringy Hodge numbers'' for certain orbifolds. These numbers are conjectured to agree with the Hodge numbers of a crepant resolution (when it exists). We compute the stringy Hodge numbers of M(SU(n),A) and M(Sp(n),A) and verify the conjecture in these cases.
This note is inspired by the work of Deligne on the local behavior of Hodge structures at infinity. We study limit mixed Hodge structures of degenerating families of compact hyperkähler manifolds. We show that when the monodromy action on $H^2$ has maximal index of unipotency, the limit mixed Hodge structures on all cohomology groups are of Hodge-Tate type.
The purpose of this note is to give an account of a well-known folklore result: the Hodge structure on the second cohomology of a compact hyperkähler manifold uniquely determines Hodge structures on all higher cohomology groups. We discuss the precise statement and its proof, which are somewhat difficult to locate in the literature.
We study the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers of a projective variety with Gorenstein canonical singularities, which was conjectured by Batyrev. We prove that the $(p,1)$-stringy Hodge numbers are nonnegative, and for threefolds we obtain new results about the stringy Hodge diamond, which hold even when the stringy $E$-function is not a polynomial. We also use the Decomposition Theorem and mixed Hodge theory to prove Batyrev's conjecture for a class of fourfolds.
For projective varieties with a certain class of 'mild' isolated singularities and for projective threefolds with arbitrary Gorenstein canonical singularities, we show that the stringy Hodge numbers satisfy the Hard Lefschetz property. This result fits nicely with a 6-dimensional counterexample of Mustata and Payne for the Hard Lefschetz property for stringy Hodge numbers in general. We also give such an example, ours is a hypersurface singularity.
Short survey based on talk given at the Institut Henri Poincare January 17th 2012, during program on surface groups. The aim was to describe some background results before describing in detail (in subsequent talks) the results of [Boa11c] related to wild character varieties and irregular mapping class groups.
Let M be a simple hyperkahler manifold. Kuga-Satake construction gives an embedding of H^2(M,C) into the second cohomology of a torus, compatible with the Hodge structure. We construct a torus T and an embedding of the graded cohomology space H^*(M,C) \to H^{*+l}(T,C) for some l, which is compatible with the Hodge structures and the Poincare pairing. Moreover, this embedding is compatible with an action of the Lie algebra generated by all Lefschetz sl(2)-triples on M.
Batyrev has defined the stringy E-function for complex varieties with at most log terminal singularities. It is a rational function in two variables if the singularities are Gorenstein. Furthermore, if the variety is projective and its stringy E-function is a polynomial, Batyrev defined its stringy Hodge numbers essentially as the coefficients of this E-function, generalizing the usual notion of Hodge numbers of a nonsingular projective variety. He conjectured that they are nonnegative. We prove this for a class of `mild' isolated singularities (the allowed singularities depend on the dimensio…
The aim of this paper is to give an application of p-adic Hodge theory to stringy Hodge numbers introduced by V. Batyrev for a mathematical formulation of mirror symmetry. Since the stringy Hodge numbers of an algebraic variety are defined by choosing a resolution of singularities, the well-definedness is not clear from the definition. We give a proof of the well-definedness based on arithmetic results such as p-adic integration and p-adic Hodge theory. Note that another proof of the well-definedness was already obtained by V. Batyrev himself by motivic integration. This is a generalization of…
We describe a class of isolated nondegenerate hypersurface singularities that give a polynomial contribution to Batyrev's stringy E-function. These singularities are obtained by imposing a natural condition on the facets of the Newton polyhedron, and they are strictly canonical. We prove that Batyrev's conjecture concerning the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers is true for complete varieties with such singularities, under some additional hypotheses on the defining polynomials (e.g. convenient or weighted homogeneous). The proof uses combinatorics on lattice polytopes. The results form a s…
We introduce the notion of stringy E-function for an arbitrary normal irreducible algebraic variety X with at worst log-terminal singularities. We prove some basic properties of stringy E-functions and compute them explicitly for arbitrary Q-Gorenstein toric varieties. Using stringy E-functions, we propose a general method to define stringy Hodge numbers for projective algebraic varieties with at worst Gorenstein canonical singularities. This allows us to formulate the topological mirror duality test for arbitrary Calabi-Yau varieties with canonical singularities. In Appendix we explain non-Ar…
The stringy E-function for normal irreducible complex varieties with at worst log terminal singularities was introduced by Batyrev. It is defined by data from a log resolution. If the variety is projective and Gorenstein and the stringy E-function is a polynomial, Batyrev also defined the stringy Hodge numbers as a generalization of the Hodge numbers of nonsingular projective varieties, and conjectured that they are nonnegative. We compute explicit formulae for the contribution of an A-D-E singularity to the stringy E-function in arbitrary dimension. With these results we can say when the stri…
The transcendental Hodge lattice of a projective manifold $M$ is the smallest Hodge substructure in $p$-th cohomology which contains all holomorphic $p$-forms. We prove that the direct sum of all transcendental Hodge lattices has a natural algebraic structure, and compute this algebra explicitly for a hyperkahler manifold. As an application, we obtain a theorem about dimension of a compact torus $T$ admitting a symplectic embedding to a hyperkahler manifold $M$. If $M$ is generic in a $d$-dimensional family of deformations, then $\dim T\geq 2^{[(d+1)/2]}$.
It was shown by Kuznetsov that complete intersections of $n$ generic quadrics in ${\mathbb P}^{2n-1}$ are related by Homological Projective Duality to certain non-commutative (Clifford) varieties which are in some sense birational to double covers of ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$ ramified over symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces. Mirror symmetry predicts that the Hodge numbers of the complete intersections of quadrics must coincide with the appropriately defined Hodge numbers of these double covers. We observe that these numbers must be different from the well-known Batyrev's stringy Hodge numbers, el…
Let $M$ be a compact hyperkahler manifold with maximal holonomy (IHS). The group $H^2(M, R)$ is equipped with a quadratic form of signature $(3, b_2-3)$, called Bogomolov-Beauville-Fujiki (BBF) form. This form restricted to the rational Hodge lattice $H^{1,1}(M,Q)$, has signature $(1,k)$. This gives a hyperbolic Riemannian metric on the projectivisation of the positive cone in $H^{1,1}(M,Q)$, denoted by $H$. Torelli theorem implies that the Hodge monodromy group $Γ$ acts on $H$ with finite covolume, giving a hyperbolic orbifold $X=H/Γ$. We show that there are finitely many geodesic hypersurfac…
Let $X$ be an arbitrary smooth $n$-dimensional projective variety. It was discovered by Libgober and Wood that the product of the Chern classes $c_1(X)c_{n-1}(X)$ depends only on the Hodge numbers of $X$. This result has been used by Eguchi, Jinzenji and Xiong in their approach to the quantum cohomology of $X$ via a representation of the Virasoro algebra with the central charge $c_n(X)$. In this paper we define for singular varieties $X$ a rational number $c_{st}^{1,n-1}(X)$ which is a stringy version of the number $c_1c_{n-1}$ for smooth $n$-folds. We show that the number $c_{st}^{1,n-1}(X)$ …
We show that for a hypersurface Batyrev's stringy E-function can be seen as a residue of the Hodge zeta function, a specialization of the motivic zeta function of Denef and Loeser. This is a nice application of inversion of adjunction. If an affine hypersurface is given by a polynomial that is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron, then the motivic zeta function and thus the stringy E-function can be computed from this Newton polyhedron (by work of Artal, Cassou-Nogues, Luengo and Melle based on an algorithm of Denef and Hoornaert). We use this procedure to obtain an easy way to…
Mirrors $X^{\vee}$ of quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces $X$ in weighted projective spaces ${\Bbb P}(w_0, \ldots, w_d)$ can be obtained as Calabi-Yau compactifications of non-degenerate affine toric hypersurfaces defined by Laurent polynomials whose Newton polytope is the lattice simplex spanned by $d+1$ lattice vectors $v_i$ satisfying the relation $\sum_i w_i v_i =0$. In this paper, we compute the stringy $E$-function of mirrors $X^\vee$ and compare it with the Vafa's orbifold $E$-function of quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces $X$. As a result, we prove the equalities of Hodge numbers …
A mapping class group of an oriented manifold is a quotient of its diffeomorphism group by the isotopies. We compute a mapping class group of a hypekahler manifold $M$, showing that it is commensurable to an arithmetic subgroup in SO(3, b_2-3). A Teichmuller space of $M$ is a space of complex structures on $M$ up to isotopies. We define a birational Teichmuller space by identifying certain points corresponding to bimeromorphically equivalent manifolds, and show that the period map gives an isomorphism of the birational Teichmuller space and the corresponding period space $SO(b_2-3, 3)/SO(2)\ti…
In this paper we define the notion of a hyperkähler manifold (potentially) of Jacobian type. If we view hyperkähler manifolds as "abelian varieties", then those of Jacobian type should be viewed as "Jacobian varieties". Under a minor assumption on the polarization, we show that a very general polarized hyperkähler fourfold $F$ of $K3^{[2]}$-type is not of Jacobian type. As a potential application, we conjecture that if a cubic fourfold is rational then its variety of lines is of Jacobian type. Under some technical assumption, it is proved that the variety of lines on a rational cubic fourfold …
We reformulate the construction of Kontsevich's completion and use Lawson homology to define many new motivic invariants. We show that the dimensions of subspaces generated by algebraic cycles of the cohomology groups of two $K$-equivalent varieties are the same, which implies that several conjectures of algebraic cycles are $K$-statements. We define stringy functions which enable us to ask stringy Grothendieck standard conjecture and stringy Hodge conjecture. We prove a projective bundle theorem in morphic cohomology for trivial bundles over any normal quasi-projective varieties.
Let $X_1$ and $X_2$ be deformation equivalent projective hyperkähler manifolds. We prove that the André motive of $X_1$ is abelian if and only if the André motive of $X_2$ is abelian. Applying this to manifolds of $\mbox{K3}^{[n]}$, generalized Kummer and OG6 deformation types, we deduce that their André motives are abelian. As a consequence, we prove that all Hodge classes in arbitrary degree on such manifolds are absolute. We discuss applications to the Mumford-Tate conjecture, showing in particular that it holds for even degree cohomology of such manifolds.
We investigate aspects of certain stringy invariants of singular elliptic fibrations which arise in engineering Grand Unified Theories in F-theory. In particular, we exploit the small resolutions of the total space of these fibrations provided recently in the physics literature to compute `stringy characteristic classes', and find that numerical invariants obtained by integrating such characteristic classes are predetermined by the topology of the base of the elliptic fibration. Moreover, we derive a simple (dimension independent) formula for pushing forward powers of the exceptional divisor o…
The stringy Euler number and E-function of Batyrev for log terminal singularities can in dimension 2 also be considered for a normal surface singularity with all log discrepancies nonzero in its minimal log resolution. Here we obtain a structure theorem for resolution graphs with respect to log discrepancies, implying that these stringy invariants can be defined in a natural way, even when some log discrepancies are zero, and more precisely for all normal surface singularities which are not log canonical. We also show that the stringy E-functions of log terminal surface singularities are polyn…

We give a spectral sequence to compute the logarithmic Hodge groups on a hypersurface type toric log Calabi-Yau space, compute its E_1 term explicitly in terms of tropical degeneration data and Jacobian rings and prove its degeneration at E_2 under mild assumptions. We prove the basechange of the affine Hodge groups and deduce it for the logarithmic Hodge groups in low dimensions. As an application, we prove a mirror symmetry duality in dimension two and four involving the usual Hodge numbers, the stringy Hodge numbers and the affine Hodge numbers.
We prove the existence of global sections trivializing the Hodge bundles on the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau manifolds, a global splitting property of these Hodge bundles. We also prove that a compact Calabi--Yau manifold can not be deformed to its complex conjugate. These results answer certain open questions in the subject. A general result about the period map to be bi-holomorphic from the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau type manifolds to their period domains is proved and applied to the cases of K$3$ surfaces, cubic fou…
We use Batyrev-Borisov's formula for the generating function of stringy Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau varieties realized as complete intersections in toric varieties in order to get closed form expressions for Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau threefolds in five-dimensional ambient spaces. These expressions involve counts of lattice points on faces of associated Cayley polytopes. Using the same techniques, similar expressions may be obtained for higher dimensional varieties realized as complete intersections of two hypersurfaces.
We show that a moduli space of slope-stable sheaves over a K3 surface is an irreducible hyperkähler manifold if and only if its second Betti number is the sum of its Hodge numbers $h^{2,0}$, $h^{1,1}$ and $h^{0,2}$.
In 1985, physicists Dixon, Harvey, Vafa and Witten studied string theories on Calabi-Yau orbifolds (cf. [DHVW]). An interesting discovery in their paper was the prediction that a certain physicist's Euler number of the orbifold must be equal to the Euler number of any of its crepant resolutions. This was soon related to the so called McKay correspondence in mathematics (cf. [McK]). Later developments include stringy Hodge numbers (cf. [Z], [BD]), mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau orbifolds (cf. [Ro]), and most recently the Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic orbifolds (cf. [CR1-2]). One common …
The moduli spaces of flat $\mathrm{SL}_2$- and $\mathrm{PGL}_2$-connections are known to be singular SYZ-mirror partners. We establish the equality of Hodge numbers of their intersection (stringy) cohomology. In rank two, this answers a question raised by Tamás Hausel in Remark 3.30 of "Global topology of the Hitchin system".
Let $X$ be a complex projective algebraic variety with Gorenstein quotient singularities and $\X$ a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack having $X$ as its coarse moduli space. We show that the CSM class $c^{SM}(X)$ coincides with the pushforward to $X$ of the total Chern class $c(T_{I\X})$ of the inertia stack $I\X$. We also show that the stringy Chern class $c_{str}(X)$ of $X$, whenever is defined, coincides with the pushforward to $X$ of the total Chern class $c(T_{II\X})$ of the double inertia stack $II\X$. Some consequences concerning stringy/orbifold Hodge numbers are deduced.
We prove that the moduli spaces of twisted $\mathrm{SL}_n$ and $\mathrm{PGL}_n$-Higgs bundles on a smooth projective curve have the same (stringy) class in the Grothendieck ring of rational Chow motives. On the level of Hodge numbers this was conjectured by Hausel and Thaddeus, and recently proven by Groechenig, Ziegler and the second author. To adapt their argument, which relies on p-adic integration, we use a version of motivic integration with values in rational Chow motives and the geometry of Néron models to evaluate such integrals on Hitchin fibers.
We study how the degrees of irrationality of moduli spaces of polarized K3 surfaces grow with respect to the genus $g$. We prove that the growth is bounded by a polynomial function of degree $14+\varepsilon$ for any $\varepsilon>0$ and, for three sets of infinitely many genera, the bounds can be refined to polynomials of degree $10$. The main ingredients in our proof are the modularity of the generating series of Heegner divisors due to Borcherds and its generalization to higher codimensions due to Kudla, Millson, Zhang, Bruinier, and Westerholt-Raum. For special genera, the proof is also buil…
We survey the basic theory of non-commutative K3 surfaces, with a particular emphasis to the ones arising from cubic fourfolds. We focus on the problem of constructing Bridgeland stability conditions on these categories and we then investigate the geometry of the corresponding moduli spaces of stable objects. We discuss a number of consequences related to cubic fourfolds including new proofs of the Torelli theorem and of the integral Hodge conjecture, the extension of a result of Addington and Thomas and various applications to hyperkähler manifolds. These notes originated from the lecture ser…
Given an Enriques surface $T$, its universal K3 cover $f: S\to T$, and a genus $g$ linear system $|C|$ on $T$, we construct the relative Prym variety $P_H=\Prym_{v, H}(\D/\CC)$, where $\CC\to |C|$ and $\D\to |f^*C|$ are the universal families, $v$ is the Mukai vector $(0,[D], 2-2g)$ and $H$ is a polarization on $S$. The relative Prym variety is a $(2g-2)$-dimensional possibly singular variety, whose smooth locus is endowed with a hyperkähler structure. This variety is constructed as the closure of the fixed locus of a symplectic birational involution defined on the moduli space $M_{v,H}(S)$. T…
We prove the Topological Mirror Symmetry Conjecture by Hausel-Thaddeus for smooth moduli spaces of Higgs bundles of type $\operatorname{SL}_n$ and $\operatorname{PGL}_n$. More precisely, we establish an equality of stringy Hodge numbers for certain pairs of algebraic orbifolds generically fibred into dual abelian varieties. Our proof utilises p-adic integration relative to the fibres, and interprets canonical gerbes present on these moduli spaces as characters on the Hitchin fibres using Tate duality. Furthermore we prove for $d$ coprime to $n$, that the number of rank $n$ Higgs bundles of deg…
We develop a theory of Bridgeland stability conditions and moduli spaces of semistable objects for a family of varieties. Our approach is based on and generalizes previous work by Abramovich-Polishchuk, Kuznetsov, Lieblich, and Piyaratne-Toda. Our notion includes openness of stability, semistable reduction, a support property uniformly across the family, and boundedness of semistable objects. We show that such a structure exists whenever stability conditions are known to exist on the fibers. Our main application is the generalization of Mukai's theory for moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on…
