Let $X$ be a complex analytic manifold, $D\subset X$ a free divisor with jacobian ideal of linear type (e.g. a locally quasi-homogeneous free divisor), $j: U=X-D \to X$ the corresponding open inclusion, $E$ an integrable logarithmic connection with respect to $D$ and $L$ the local system of the horizontal sections of $E$ on $U$. In this paper we prove that the canonical morphisms between the logarithmic de Rham complex of $E(kD)$ and $R j_* L$ (resp. the logarithmic de Rham complex of $E(-kD)$ and $j_!L$) are isomorphisms in the derived category of sheaves of complex vector spaces for $k\gg 0$ (locally on $X$)
We prove that, in characteristic 0, any Hasse-Schmidt module structure can be recovered from its underlying integrable connection, and consequently Hasse--Schmidt modules and modules endowed with an integrable connection coincide.
We study two different actions on the moduli spaces of logarithmic connections over smooth complex projective curves. Firstly, we establish a dictionary between logarithmic orbifold connections and parabolic logarithmic connections over the quotient curve. Secondly, we prove that fixed points on the moduli space of connections under the action of finite order line bundles are exactly the push-forward of logarithmic connections on a certain unramified Galois cover of the base curve. In the coprime case, this action of finite order line bundles on the moduli space is cohomologically trivial.
We investigate the relative logarithmic connections on a holomorphic vector bundle over a complex analytic family. We give a sufficient condition for the existence of a relative logarithmic connection on a holomorphic vector bundle singular over a relative simple normal crossing divisor. We define the relative residue of relative logarithmic connection and express relative Chern classes of a holomorphic vector bundle in terms of relative residues.
We examine logarithmic connections with vanishing p-curvature on smooth curves by studying their kernels, describing them in terms of formal local decomposition. We then apply our results in the case of connections of rank 2 on P^1, classifying such connections in terms of self-maps of P^1 with prescribed ramification.
We construct the Kuranishi spaces, or in other words, the versal deformations, for the following classes of connections with fixed divisor of poles $D$: all such connections, as well as for its subclasses of integrable, integrable logarithmic and integrable logarithmic connections with a parabolic structure over $D$ . The tangent and obstruction spaces of deformation theory are defined as the hypercohomology of an appropriate complex of sheaves, and the Kuranishi space is a fiber of the formal obstruction map.
We give a de Rham interpretation of Nahm's transform for certain parabolic harmonic bundles on the projective line and compare it to minimal Fourier--Laplace transform of $\mathcal{D}$-modules. We give an algebraic definition of a parabolic structure on the transformed bundle and show that it is compatible with the transformed harmonic metric.
Let $k$ be a perfect field, and $X$ an irreducible smooth projective curve over $k$. We give a criterion for a vector bundle over $X$ to admit a logarithmic connection singular over a finite subset of $X$ with given residues, where residues are assumed to be rigid.
Let X be a complex analytic manifold and D \subset X a free divisor. Integrable logarithmic connections along D can be seen as locally free {\cal O}_X-modules endowed with a (left) module structure over the ring of logarithmic differential operators {\cal D}_X(\log D). In this paper we study two related results: the relationship between the duals of any integrable logarithmic connection over the base rings {\cal D}_X and {\cal D}_X(\log D), and a differential criterion for the logarithmic comparison theorem. We also generalize a formula of Esnault-Viehweg in the normal crossing case for the Ve…
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 3$. We consider the moduli space of holomorphic connections over $X$ and the moduli space of logarithmic connections singular over a finite subset of $X$ with fixed residues. We determine the Chow group of these moduli spaces. We compute the global sections of the sheaves of differential operators on ample line bundles and their symmetric powers over these moduli spaces, and show that they are constant under certain condition. We show the Torelli type theorem for the moduli space of logarithmic connections. We also describe the rational con…
Let $X$ be a connected smooth complex projective variety of dimension $n \geq 1$. Let $D$ be a simple normal crossing divisor on $X$. Let $G$ be a connected complex Lie group, and $E_G$ a holomorphic principal $G$-bundle on $X$. In this article, we give criterion for existence of a logarithmic connection on $E_G$ singular along $D$.
Let $M$ be a smooth complex projective toric variety equipped with an action of a torus $T$, such that the complement $D$ of the open $T$--orbit in $M$ is a simple normal crossing divisor. Let $G$ be a complex reductive affine algebraic group. We prove that an algebraic principal $G$--bundle $E_G\to M$ admits a $T$--equivariant structure if and only if $E_G$ admits a logarithmic connection singular over $D$. If $E_H\to M$ is a $T$-equivariant algebraic principal $H$--bundle, where $H$ is any complex affine algebraic group, then $E_H$ in fact has a canonical integrable logarithmic connection si…
We study the moduli space of logarithmic connections of rank 2 on the Riemann sphere minus n points with fixed spectral data. There are two natural Lagrangian maps: one towards apparent singularities of the associated fuchsian scalar equation, and another one towards moduli of parabolic bundles. We show that these are transversal and dual to each other. In case n=5, we recover the beautiful geometry of Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4.
In this paper we survey the role of D-module theory in the comparison between logarithmic and meromorphic de Rham complexes of integrable logarithmic connections with respect to free divisors, and we present some new linearity conditions on the Jacobian ideal which arise in this setting.
The generic element of the moduli space of logarithmic connections with parabolic points on holomorphic vector bundle over the Riemann sphere can be represented by a Fuchsian equation with some singularities and some apparent singularities. We analyze the case of rank $3$ vector bundle which leads to third order Fuchsian equation. We find coordinates on an open subset of the moduli space and we construct a non-trivial part of the moduli space by blowing up along a variety in a special case.
Let X be a smooth complete complex toric variety such that the boundary is a simple normal crossing divisor, and let E be a holomorphic vector bundle on X. We prove that E admits an equivariant structure if and only if E admits a logarithmic connection singular over D. More precisely, we show that an equivariant vector bundle on X has a tautological integrable logarithmic connection singular over D. This is used in computing the Chern classes of the equivariant vector bundles on X. We also prove a version of the result for holomorphic vector bundles on log parallelizable G-pairs (X,D), where G…
Let $E_G$ be a holomorphic principal $G$-bundle on a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group. Fix a finite subset $D \subset X$, and for each $x\in D$ fix $w_x \in \text{ad}(E_G)_x$. Let $T$ be a maximal torus in the group of all holomorphic automorphisms of $E_G$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a $T$-invariant logarithmic connection on $E_G$ singular over $D$ such that the residue over each $x \in D$ is $w_x$. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a logarithmic …
We are interested in studying moduli spaces of rank 2 logarithmic connections on elliptic curves having two poles. To do so, we investigate certain logarithmic rank 2 connections defined on the Riemann sphere and a transformation rule to lift such connections to an elliptic curve. The transformation is as follows: given an elliptic curve $C$ with elliptic quotient $π\colon C\to{\mathbb P}^1$, and the logarithmic connection $(E,\nabla)$ on ${\mathbb P}^1$, we may pullback the connection to the elliptic curve to obtain a new connection $(π^*E, π^*\nabla)$ on $C$. After suitable birational modifi…
This is a note in which we first review symmetries of moduli spaces of stable meromorphic connections on trivial vector bundles over the Riemann sphere, and next discuss symmetries of their integrable deformations as an application. In the study of the symmetries, a realization of the moduli spaces as quiver varieties is given and plays an essential role.
Given a compact Kaehler manifold X, it is shown that pairs of the form (E, D), where E is a trivial holomorphic vector bundle on X, and D is an integrable holomorphic connection on $E$, produce a neutral Tannakian category. The corresponding pro-algebraic affine group scheme is studied. In particular, it is shown that this pro-algebraic affine group scheme for a compact Riemann surface determines uniquely the isomorphism class of the Riemann surface.
Let $S$ be a finite subset of a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g \geq 2$. Let $\cat{M}_{lc}(n,d)$ denote the moduli space of pairs $(E,D)$, where $E$ is a holomorphic vector bundle over $X$ and $D$ is a logarithmic connection on $E$ singular over $S$, with fixed residues in the centre of $\mathfrak{gl}(n,\C)$, where $n$ and $d$ are mutually corpime. Let $L$ denote a fixed line bundle with a logarithmic connection $D_L$ singular over $S$. Let $\cat{M}'_{lc}(n,d)$ and $\cat{M}_{lc}(n,L)$ be the moduli spaces parametrising all pairs $(E,D)$ such that underlying vector bundle $E$ …
We explain in detail the correspondence between algebraic connections over CP^{1}, logarithmic at X = { x_{1},...,x_{n} } \subset CP^{1}, and flat bundles over CP^{1}-X with integer weighted filtrations near each x_{j}. Included is a gauge fixing theorem for logarithmic connections. (Thus far, one could work over any Riemann surface.) We prove a bound on the splitting type of a semi-stable logarithmic connection over CP^{1}. Using this we extend and simplify some results on the Riemann-Hilbert-Problem, which asks for a logarithmic connection on a holomorphically trivial bundle over CP^{1}, ext…
Given a morphism $X \to S$ of log schemes of characteristic $p > 0$ and a lifting of $X'$ over $S$ modulo $p^2$, we use Lorenzon's indexed algebras $A_X^{gp}$ and $B_{X/S}$ to construct an equivalence between $O_X$-modules with nilpotent integrable connection and indexed $B_{X/S}$-modules with nilpotent $B_{X/S}$-linear Higgs field. If either satisfies a stricter nilpotence condition, we find an isomorphism between the de Rham cohomology of the connection and the Higgs cohomology of the Higgs field.
We describe moduli spaces of logarithmic rank $2$ connections on elliptic curves with $n \geq 1$ poles and generic residues. In particular, we generalize a previous work by the first and second named authors. Our main approach is to analyze the underlying parabolic bundles; their stability and instability play a major role.
We provide a sketch of the GIT construction of the moduli spaces for the three classes of connections: the class of meromorphic connections with fixed divisor of poles $D$ and its subclasses of integrable and integrable logarithmic connections. We use the Luna Slice Theorem to represent the germ of the moduli space as the quotient of the Kuranishi space by the automorphism group of the central fiber. This method is used to determine the singularities of the moduli space of connections in some examples.
Deligne's regularity criterion for an integrable connection $\nabla$ on a smooth complex algebraic variety $X$ says that $\nabla$ is regular along the irreducible divisors at infinity in some fixed normal compactification of $X$ if and only if the restriction of $\nabla$ to every smooth curve on $X$ is fuchsian (i.e. has only regular singularities at infinity). The "only if" part is the difficult implication. Deligne's proof is transcendental and uses Hironaka's resolution of singularities. We present a purely algebraic proof of this implication which does not use resolution beyond the case of…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, let $R$ be a commutative $k$-algebra, and let $M$ be a torsion free $R$-module of rank one with a connection $\nabla$. We consider the Lie-Rinehart cohomology with values in $End_{R}(M)$ with its induced connection, and give an interpretation of this cohomology in terms of the integrable connections on $M$. When $R$ is an isolated singularity of dimension $d\geq2$, we relate the Lie-Rinehart cohomology to the topological cohomology of the link of the singularity, and when $R$ is a quasi-homogenous hypersurface of dimension two, we g…
Fix a smooth projective curve over a field of characteristic zero and a finite set of punctures. Let G be a connected linear algebraic group. We prove that the moduli of G-bundles with logarithmic connections having fixed residue classes at the punctures is an algebraic stack of finite type.
In this paper, we investigate representations of $\operatorname{At}(N)$, the Atiyah algebroids of a holomorphic line bundles $N$ over a complex manifold $Y$. In particular, we relate $\operatorname{At}(N)$-modules with logarithmic connections through two functors. On the one hand, we use these functors to the define invariants (monodromy) for representations of Atiyah algebroids. On the other hand, this opens the way to use the theory of Lie algebroids to study problems about logarithmic connections; we will give an example of this by showing that the existence of Deligne's extensions of flat …
We establish normal form theorems for a large class of singular flat connections on complex manifolds, including connections with logarithmic poles along weighted homogeneous Saito free divisors. As a result, we show that the moduli spaces of such connections admit the structure of algebraic quotient stacks. In order to prove these results, we introduce homogeneous Lie groupoids and study their representation theory. In this direction, we prove two main results: a Jordan-Chevalley decomposition theorem, and a linearization theorem. We give explicit normal forms for several examples of free div…
We consider irreducible logarithmic connections $(E,\,δ)$ over compact Riemann surfaces $X$ of genus at least two. The underlying vector bundle $E$ inherits a natural parabolic structure over the singular locus of the connection $δ$; the parabolic structure is given by the residues of $δ$. We prove that for the universal isomonodromic deformation of the triple $(X,\,E,\,δ)$, the parabolic vector bundle corresponding to a generic parameter in the Teichmüller space is parabolically stable. In the case of parabolic vector bundles of rank two, the general parabolic vector bundle is even parabolica…
Motivated by a remark and a question of Nicholas Katz, we characterize the tangent space of the space of Fuchsian equations with given generic exponents inside the corresponding moduli space of logarithmic connections: we construct a weight 1 Hodge structure on the tangent space of the moduli of logarithmic connections such that deformations of Fuchsian equations correspond to the $(1,0)$-part.
Deligne's celebrated "Riemann--Hilbert correspondence" relates representations of the fundamental group of a smooth complex algebraic variety and regular-singular integrable connections. In this work, we show how to arrive at a similar statement in the case of a smooth scheme $X$ over the spectrum of a ring $R=\mathbb C[[t_1,\ldots, t_r]]/I$. On one side of the correspondence we have representations on $R$-modules of the fundamental group of the special fibre, and on the other we have certain integrable $R$-connections admitting logarithmic models. The correspondence is then applied to give ex…
A theorem of Weil and Atiyah says that a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ on a compact Riemann surface $X$ admits a holomorphic connection if and only if the degree of every direct summand of $E$ is zero. Fix a finite subset $S$ of $X$, and fix an endomorphism $A(x) \in \text{End}(E_x)$ for every $x \in S$. It is natural to ask when there is a logarithmic connection on $E$ singular over $S$ with residue $A(x)$ at every $x \in S$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for it under the assumption that the residues $A(x)$ are rigid.
The logarithmic connections studied in the paper are direct images of regular connections on line bundles over genus-2 double covers of the elliptic curve. We give an explicit parametrization of all such connections, determine their monodromy, differential Galois group and the underlying rank-2 vector bundle. The latter is described in terms of elementary transforms. The question of its (semi)-stability is addressed.
We give an explicit finite-dimensional model for the derived moduli stack of flat connections on $\mathbb{C}^k$ with logarithmic singularities along a weighted homogeneous Saito free divisor. We investigate in detail the case of plane curves of the form $x^p = y^q$ and relate the moduli spaces to the Grothendieck-Springer resolution. We also discuss the shifted Poisson geometry of these moduli spaces. Namely, we conjecture that the map restricting a logarithmic connection to the complement of the divisor admits a shifted coisotropic structure and we construct a shifted Poisson structure on the…
Using tools from the theory of Lie groupoids, we study the category of logarithmic flat connections on principal $G$-bundles, where $G$ is a complex reductive structure group. Flat connections on the affine line with a logarithmic singularity at the origin are equivalent to representations of a groupoid associated to the exponentiated action of $\mathbb{C}$. We show that such representations admit a canonical Jordan-Chevalley decomposition and use this to give a functorial classification. Flat connections on a complex manifold with logarithmic singularities along a hypersurface are equivalent …
We study the branched holomorphic projective structures on a compact Riemann surface $X$ with a fixed branching divisor $S\, =\, \sum_{i=1}^d x_i$, where $x_i \,\in\, X$ are distinct points. After defining branched ${\rm SO}(3,{\mathbb C})$--opers, we show that the branched holomorphic projective structures on $X$ are in a natural bijection with the branched ${\rm SO}(3,{\mathbb C})$--opers singular at $S$. It is deduced that the branched holomorphic projective structures on $X$ are also identified with a subset of the space of all logarithmic connections on $J^2((TX)\otimes {\mathcal O}_X(S))…
We give a geometric proof to the classical fact that the dimension of the deformations of a given generic Fuchsian equation without changing the semi-simple conjugacy class of its local monodromies (``number of accessory parameters'') is equal to half the dimension of the moduli space of deformations of the associated local system. We do this by constructing a weight 1 Hodge structure on the infinitesimal deformations of logarithmic connections, such that deformations as an equation correspond to the $(1,0)$-part. This answers a question of Nicholas Katz, who noticed the dimension doubling men…
We study algebraic isomonodromic deformations of flat logarithmic connections on the Riemann sphere with $n\geq 4$ poles, for arbitrary rank. We introduce a natural property of algebraizability for the germ of universal deformation of such a connection. We relate this property to a peculiarity of the corresponding monodromy representation: to yield a finite braid group orbit on the appropriate character variety. Under reasonable assumptions on the deformed connection, we may actually establish an equivalence between both properties. We apply this result in the rank two case to relate finite br…
We study the set ${\mathcal P}_S$ consisting of all branched holomorphic projective structures on a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g \geq 1$ and with a fixed branching divisor $S:= \sum_{i=1}^d n_i\cdot x_i$, where $x_i \in X$. Under the hypothesis that $n_i=1$, for all $i$, with $d$ a positive even integer such that $d \neq 2g-2$, we show that ${\mathcal P}_S$ coincides with a subset of the set of all logarithmic connections with singular locus $S$, satisfying certain geometric conditions, on the rank two holomorphic jet bundle $J^1(Q)$, where $Q$ is a fixed holomorphic line bundle on …
We prove Malgrange's conjecture on the absence of confluence phenomena for integrable meromorphic connections. More precisely, if $ Y\to X$ is a complex-analytic fibration by smooth curves, $Z$ a hypersurface of $Y$ finite over $X$, and $\nabla$ an integrable meromorphic connection on $Y$ with poles along $Z$, then the function which attaches to {\smit x} $\in X$ the sum of the irregularities of the fiber $\nabla_{(x)}$ at the points of $Z_x$ is lower semicontinuous. The proof relies upon a study of the formal structure of integrable meromorphic connections in several variables.
Given a smooth scheme over $\Z/p^n\Z$ with a lift of relative Frobenius to $\Z/p^{n+1}\Z$, we construct a functor from the category of Higgs modules to that of modules with integrable connections as the composite of the level raising inverse image functors from the category of modules with integrable $p^{m}$-connections to that of modules with integrable $p^{m-1}$-connections for $1 \leq m \leq n$. In the case $m=1$, we prove that the level raising inverse image functor is an equivalence when restricted to quasi-nilpotent objects, which generalizes a local result of Ogus-Vologodsky. We also pr…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, and let $A = k[x,y]/(f)$ be a quasi-homogeneous plane curve. We show that for any graded torsion free A-module M, there exists a natural graded integrable connection, i.e. a graded A-linear homomorphism $\nabla: \operatorname{Der}_k(A) \to \operatorname{End}_k(M)$ that satisfy the derivation property and preserves the Lie product. In particular, a torsion free module N over the complete local ring $B = \hat A$ admits a natural integrable connection if A is a simple curve singularity, or if A is irreducible and N is a gradable module.
Let A be a commutative k-algebra, where k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, and let M be an A-module. We consider the following question: Under what conditions on A and M is it possible to find a connection on M? We consider maximal Cohen-Macaulay (MCM) modules over complete CM algebras that are isolated singularities, and usually assume that the singularities have finite CM representation type. It is known that over a simple singularity of dimension at most two, any MCM module admits an integrable connection. We prove that over a simple singularity of dimension at least th…
Moduli spaces of stable parabolic bundles of parabolic degree $0$ over the Riemann sphere are stratified according to the Harder--Narasimhan filtration of underlying vector bundles. Over a Zariski open subset $\mathscr{N}_{0}$ of the open stratum depending explicitly on a choice of parabolic weights, a real-valued function $\mathscr{S}$ is defined as the regularized critical value of the non-compact Wess--Zumino--Novikov--Witten action functional. The definition of $\mathscr{S}$ depends on a suitable notion of parabolic bundle `uniformization map' following from the Mehta--Seshadri and Birkhof…
