We give a geometric proof to the classical fact that the dimension of the deformations of a given generic Fuchsian equation without changing the semi-simple conjugacy class of its local monodromies (``number of accessory parameters'') is equal to half the dimension of the moduli space of deformations of the associated local system. We do this by constructing a weight 1 Hodge structure on the infinitesimal deformations of logarithmic connections, such that deformations as an equation correspond to the $(1,0)$-part. This answers a question of Nicholas Katz, who noticed the dimension doubling mentioned above. We then show that the Hitchin map restricted to deformations of the Fuchsian equation is a one-to-one etale map. Finally, we give a positive answer to a conjecture of Ohtsuki about the maximal number of apparent singularities for a Fuchsian equation with given semisimple monodromy, and define a Lagrangian foliation of the moduli space of connections whose leaves consist of logarithmic connections that can be realised as Fuchsian equations having apparent singularities in a prescribed finite set.
Motivated by a remark and a question of Nicholas Katz, we characterize the tangent space of the space of Fuchsian equations with given generic exponents inside the corresponding moduli space of logarithmic connections: we construct a weight 1 Hodge structure on the tangent space of the moduli of logarithmic connections such that deformations of Fuchsian equations correspond to the $(1,0)$-part.
The generic element of the moduli space of logarithmic connections with parabolic points on holomorphic vector bundle over the Riemann sphere can be represented by a Fuchsian equation with some singularities and some apparent singularities. We analyze the case of rank $3$ vector bundle which leads to third order Fuchsian equation. We find coordinates on an open subset of the moduli space and we construct a non-trivial part of the moduli space by blowing up along a variety in a special case.
This is a survey article whose main goal is to explain how many components of the character variety of a closed surface are either deformation spaces of representations into the maximal compact subgroup or deformation spaces of certain Fuchsian representations. This latter family is of particular interest and is related to the field of higher Teichmüller theory. Our main tool is the theory of Higgs bundles. We try to develop the general theory of Higgs bundles for real groups and indicate where subtleties arise. However, the main emphasis is placed on concrete examples which are our motivating…
We study the moduli space of logarithmic connections of rank 2 on the Riemann sphere minus n points with fixed spectral data. There are two natural Lagrangian maps: one towards apparent singularities of the associated fuchsian scalar equation, and another one towards moduli of parabolic bundles. We show that these are transversal and dual to each other. In case n=5, we recover the beautiful geometry of Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4.
We study the existence of Fuchsian differential equations in positive characteristic with nilpotent p-curvature, and given local invariants. In the case of differential equations with logarithmic local mononodromy, we determine the minimal possible degree of a polynomial solution.
Working in characteristic two, I classify nonsmooth Enriques surfaces with normal crossing singularities. Using Kato's theory of logarithmic structures, I show that such surfaces are smoothable and lift to characteristic zero, provided they are d-semistable.
In this paper, we classify all (complete) non elementary algebraic solutions of Garnier systems that can be constructed by Kitaev's method: they are deduced from isomonodromic deformations defined by pulling back a given fuchsian equation E by a family of ramified covers. We first introduce orbifold structures associated to a fuchsian equation. This allow to get a refined version of Riemann-Hurwitz formula and then to promtly deduce that E is hypergeometric. Then, we can bound exponents and degree of the pull-back maps and further list all possible ramification cases. This generalizes a result…
In literature, it is known that any solution of Painlevé VI equation governs the isomonodromic deformation of a second order linear Fuchsian ODE on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. In this paper, we extend this isomonodromy theory on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$ to the moduli space of elliptic curves by studying the isomonodromic deformation of the generalized Lamé equation. Among other things, we prove that the isomonodromic equation is a new Hamiltonian system, which is equivalent to the elliptic form of Painlevé VI equation for generic parameters. For Painlevé VI equation with some special parameters, the isomonodr…
We show that every compact complex analytic space endowed with a fine logarithmic structure and every morphism between such spaces admit a semi-universal deformation. These results generalize the analogous results in complex analytic geometry first independently proved by A. Douady and H. Grauert in the '70. We follow Douady's two steps process approach consisting of an infinite-dimensional construction of the semi-universal deformation space followed by a finite-dimensional reduction.
We study codimension one foliations in projective space \PP^n over \CC by looking at its first order perturbations: unfoldings and deformations. We give special attention to foliations of rational and logarithmic type. For a differential form ωdefining a codimension one foliation, we present a graded module \UU(ω), related to the first order unfoldings of ω. If ωis a generic form of rational or logarithmic type, as a first application of the construction of \UU(ω), we classify the first order deformations that arise from first order unfoldings. Then, we count the number of isolated points in t…
We consider irreducible logarithmic connections $(E,\,δ)$ over compact Riemann surfaces $X$ of genus at least two. The underlying vector bundle $E$ inherits a natural parabolic structure over the singular locus of the connection $δ$; the parabolic structure is given by the residues of $δ$. We prove that for the universal isomonodromic deformation of the triple $(X,\,E,\,δ)$, the parabolic vector bundle corresponding to a generic parameter in the Teichmüller space is parabolically stable. In the case of parabolic vector bundles of rank two, the general parabolic vector bundle is even parabolica…
We present a new method to solve certain $\bar{\partial}$-equations for logarithmic differential forms by using harmonic integral theory for currents on Kahler manifolds. The result can be considered as a $\bar{\partial}$-lemma for logarithmic forms. As applications, we generalize the result of Deligne about closedness of logarithmic forms, give geometric and simpler proofs of Deligne's degeneracy theorem for the logarithmic Hodge to de Rham spectral sequences at $E_1$-level, as well as certain injectivity theorem on compact Kahler manifolds. Furthermore, for a family of logarithmic deformatio…
In this note we study the deformation theory of periodic (logarithmic) Higgs-de Rham flows. Under suitable numerical assumptions, this is equivalent to the deformation theory of torsion (logarithmic) Fontaine-Faltings modules. As an application, we formulate an \emph{ordinarity} condition, which provides a sufficient condition for a $p^n$-torsion crystalline representation to deform to a $p^{n+1}$-torsion crystalline representation.
In a previous paper [FT1], for any logarithmic symplectic pair (X,D) of a symplectic manifold X and a simple normal crossings symplectic divisor D, we introduced the notion of log pseudo-holomorphic curve and proved a compactness theorem for the moduli spaces of stable log curves. In this paper, we introduce a natural set up for studying the deformation theory of log (and relative) curves. As a result, we obtain a logarithmic analog of the space of Ruan-Tian perturbations for these moduli spaces. For a generic compatible pair of an almost complex structure and a log perturbation term, we prove…
We study algebraic isomonodromic deformations of flat logarithmic connections on the Riemann sphere with $n\geq 4$ poles, for arbitrary rank. We introduce a natural property of algebraizability for the germ of universal deformation of such a connection. We relate this property to a peculiarity of the corresponding monodromy representation: to yield a finite braid group orbit on the appropriate character variety. Under reasonable assumptions on the deformed connection, we may actually establish an equivalence between both properties. We apply this result in the rank two case to relate finite br…
Gromov-Witten invariants have been constructed to be deformation invariant, but their behavior under other transformations is subtle. In this note we show that logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants are also invariant under appropriately defined logarithmic modifications.
In this paper, we investigate the possibility of constructing isomonodromic deformations of logarithmic connections on curves by using ramified covers. We give new examples and prove a classification result.
We consider deformations of the Weyl arrangement of type $A_2$, which include the extended Shi and Catalan arrangements. These last ones are well-known to be free. We study their sheaves of logarithmic vector fields in all other cases, and show that they are Steiner bundles. Also, we determine explicitly their unstable lines. As a corollary, some counter-examples to the shift isomorphism problem are given.
We construct the Kuranishi spaces, or in other words, the versal deformations, for the following classes of connections with fixed divisor of poles $D$: all such connections, as well as for its subclasses of integrable, integrable logarithmic and integrable logarithmic connections with a parabolic structure over $D$ . The tangent and obstruction spaces of deformation theory are defined as the hypercohomology of an appropriate complex of sheaves, and the Kuranishi space is a fiber of the formal obstruction map.
A Lamé connection is a logarithmic $\mathrm{sl}(2,\mathbb C)$-connection $(E,\nabla)$ over an elliptic curve $X:\{y^2=x(x-1)(x-t)\}$, $t\not=0,1$, having a single pole at infinity. When this connection is irreducible, we show that it is invariant by the standart involution and can be pushed down as a logarithmic $\mathrm{sl}(2,\mathbb C)$-connection over $\mathbb P^1$ with poles at $0$, $1$, $t$ and $\infty$. Therefore, the isomonodromic deformation $(E_t,\nabla_t)$ of an irreducible Lamé connection, when the elliptic curve $X_t$ varry in the Legendre family, is parametrized by a solution $q(t…
Let X_0 be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus g with D_0\subset X_0 an ordered subset of cardinality n, and let E_G be a holomorphic principal G-bundle on X_0, where G is a complex reductive affine algebraic group, that admits a logarithmic connection \nabla_0 with polar divisor D_0. Let (\cal{E}_G, \nabla) be the universal isomonodromic deformation of (E_G,\nabla_0) over the universal Teichmüller curve (\cal{X}, \cal{D})\rightarrow {Teich}_{g,n}, where {Teich}_{g,n} is the Teichmüller space for genus g Riemann surfaces with n-marked points. We prove the following: Assume that g>1 an…
This paper gives a foundation of log smooth deformation theory. We study the infinitesimal liftings of log smooth morphisms and show that the log smooth deformation functor has a representable hull. This deformation theory gives, for example, the following two types of deformations: (1) relative deformations of a certain kind of a pair of an algebraic variety and a divisor of it, and (2) global smoothings of normal crossing varieties. The former is a generalization of the relative deformation theory introduced by Makio, and the latter coincides with the logarithmic deformation theory introduce…
On logarithmic paper some real algebraic curves look like smoothed broken lines. Moreover, the broken lines can be obtained as limits of those curves. The corresponding deformation can be viewed as a quantization, in which the broken line is a classical object and the curves are quantum. This generalizes to a new connection between algebraic geometry and the geometry of polyhedra, which is more straight-forward than the other known connections and gives a new insight into constructions used in the topology of real algebraic varieties.
Given a smooth curve with weighted marked points, the Abel-Jacboi map produces a line bundle on the curve. This map fails to extend to the full boundary of the moduli space of stable pointed curves. Using logarithmic and tropical geometry, we describe a modular modification of the moduli space of curves over which the Abel-Jacobi map extends. We also describe the attendant deformation theory and virtual fundamental class of this moduli space. This recovers the double ramification cycle, as well as variants associated to differentials.
In this paper we prove that any degree $d$ deformation of a generic logarithmic polynomial differential equation with a persistent center must be logarithmic again. This is a generalization of Ilyashenko's result on Hamiltonian differential equations. The main tools are Picard-Lefschetz theory of a polynomial with complex coefficients in two variables, specially the Gusein-Zade/A'Campo's theorem on calculating the Dynkin diagram of the polynomial, and the action of Gauss-Manin connection on the so called Brieskorn lattice/Petrov module of the polynomial. Some applications on the cyclicity of c…
We study analytic deformations of holomorphic foliations given by homogeneous integrable one-forms in the complex affine space $\mathbb C^n$. The deformation is supposed to be of first order (order one in the parameter). We also assume that the deformation is given by homogeneous polynomial one-forms. The deformation takes place in the affine space since we are not assuming that the foliations descent to the projective space. We describe the space of such deformations in three main situations: (1) the given foliation is given by the level hypersurfaces of a homogeneous polynomial. (2) the foli…
The object of this paper is to describe an explicit two--parameter family of logarithmic flat connections over the complex projective plane. These connections have dihedral monodromy and their polar locus is a prescribed quintic composed of a circle and three tangent lines. By restricting them to generic lines we get an algebraic family of isomonodromic deformations of the five--punctured sphere. This yields new algebraic solutions of a Garnier system. Finally, we use the associated Riccati one--forms to construct an interesting non--generic family of transversally projective Lotka--Volterra f…
The germ of the universal isomonodromic deformation of a logarithmic connection on a stable n-pointed genus g curve always exists in the analytic category. The first part of this paper investigates under which conditions it is the analytic germification of an algebraic isomonodromic deformation. Up to some minor technical conditions, this turns out to be the case if and only if the monodromy of the connection has finite orbit under the action of the mapping class group. The second part of this paper studies the dynamics of this action in the particular case of reducible rank 2 representations …
