Let $k$ be a perfect field, and $X$ an irreducible smooth projective curve over $k$. We give a criterion for a vector bundle over $X$ to admit a logarithmic connection singular over a finite subset of $X$ with given residues, where residues are assumed to be rigid.
Let $X$ be a connected smooth complex projective variety of dimension $n \geq 1$. Let $D$ be a simple normal crossing divisor on $X$. Let $G$ be a connected complex Lie group, and $E_G$ a holomorphic principal $G$-bundle on $X$. In this article, we give criterion for existence of a logarithmic connection on $E_G$ singular along $D$.
In this paper, we give a criterion for the existence of logarithmic embeddings -- which was first introduced by Steenbrink -- for general normal crossing varieties. Using this criterion, we also give a new proof of the theorem of Kawamata--Namikawa which states a criterion for the existence of the log structures of semistable type.
We study divisors in a complex manifold in view of the property that the algebra of logarithmic differential operators along the divisor is generated by logarithmic vector fields. We give a sufficient criterion for the property, a simple proof of F.J. Calderon-Moreno's theorem that free divisors have the property, a proof that divisors in dimension 3 with only isolated quasi-homogeneous singularities have the property, an example of a non-free divisor with non-isolated singularity having the property, an example of a divisor not having the property, and an algorithm to compute the V-filtration…
The tilting correspondence is a fundamental property of perfectoid fields. In this note, we show that the tilting construction can also be used to detect perfectoid fields among nonarchimedean fields. In particular, for $K$ a complete subfield of $\mathbb{C}_p$ (a completed algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}_p$), $K$ is perfectoid if and only if its tilt is not algebraic over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We also include some conjectures on APF (arithmetically profinite) extensions, perfectoid fields, and their relations.
We investigate equivalences between the categories of perfects complexes of the quotients of two smooth projective schemes by the action of a finite group. As a result we give a necessary and sufficient condition for an equivalence between the equivariant derived categories to descend to the categories of perfect complexes.
A theorem of Weil and Atiyah says that a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ on a compact Riemann surface $X$ admits a holomorphic connection if and only if the degree of every direct summand of $E$ is zero. Fix a finite subset $S$ of $X$, and fix an endomorphism $A(x) \in \text{End}(E_x)$ for every $x \in S$. It is natural to ask when there is a logarithmic connection on $E$ singular over $S$ with residue $A(x)$ at every $x \in S$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for it under the assumption that the residues $A(x)$ are rigid.
We show that a holonomic divisor is free if and only if applying all logarithmic derivations to a generic function with isolated critical point yields a complete intersection Artin algebra.
It is known that a vector bundle E on a smooth projective curve Y defined over an algebraically closed field is semistable if and only if there is a vector bundle F on Y such that the cohomologies of E\otimes F vanish. We extend this criterion for semistability to vector bundles on curves defined over perfect fields. Let X be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve defined over a perfect field k, and let E be a vector bundle on X. We prove that E is semistable if and only if there is a vector bundle F on $X$ such that the cohomologies of E\otimes F vanish. We also give an explicit …
We construct correspondences in logarithmic Hodge theory over a perfect field of arbitrary characteristic. These are represented by classes in the cohomology of sheaves of differential forms with log poles and, notably, log zeroes on cartesian products of varieties. From one perspective this generalizes work of Chatzistamatiou and Rülling, who developed (non-logarithmic) Hodge correspondences over perfect fields of arbitrary characteristic; from another we provide partial generalizations of more recent work of Binda, Park and Østvær on logarithmic Hodge correspondences by relaxing finiteness a…
Let A be a complete discrete valuation ring with possibly imperfect residue field, and let $χ$ be a one-dimensional Galois representation over A. I show that the non-logarithmic variant of Kato's Swan conductor is the same for $χ$ and the pullback of $χ$ to the generic residual perfection of A. This implies the conductor from "Conductors and the moduli of residual perfection" (math.NT/0112305) extends the non-logarithmic variant of Kato's.
The germ of an analytic set $(X,p)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ has an associated $\mathscr{O}_{\mathbb{C}^n,p}$-module $\mathrm{Der}(-\log X)$ of `logarithmic vector fields', the ambient germs of holomorphic vector fields tangent to the smooth locus of $X$. For a module $L\subseteq \mathrm{Der}(-\log X)$ let $I_k(L)$ be the ideal generated by the $k\times k$ minors of a matrix of generators for $L$; these are the Fitting ideals of $\mathrm{Der}_{\mathbb{C}^n,p}/L$. We aim to: (i) find sufficient conditions on $\{I_k(L)\}$ to prove $L=\mathrm{Der}(-\log X)$; (ii) identify $\{I_k(\mathrm{Der}(-\log X))\}…
We prove that an algebraic group over a field $k$is affine precisely when its Picard group is torsion, and show that in this case the Picard group is finite when $k$ is perfect, and the product of a finite group of order prime to $p$ and a $p$-primary group of finite exponent when $k$ is imperfect of characteristic $p$.
In order to study $p$-adic étale cohomology of an open subvariety $U$ of a smooth proper variety $X$ over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, we introduce new $p$-primary torsion sheaves. It is a modification of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt sheaves of $X$ depending on effective divisors $D$ supported in $X-U$. Then we establish a perfect duality between cohomology groups of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt cohomology of $U$ and an inverse limit of those of the mentioned modified sheaves. Over a finite field, the duality can be used to study wild ramification class field theory for the open su…
Let X be a complex analytic manifold and D \subset X a free divisor. Integrable logarithmic connections along D can be seen as locally free {\cal O}_X-modules endowed with a (left) module structure over the ring of logarithmic differential operators {\cal D}_X(\log D). In this paper we study two related results: the relationship between the duals of any integrable logarithmic connection over the base rings {\cal D}_X and {\cal D}_X(\log D), and a differential criterion for the logarithmic comparison theorem. We also generalize a formula of Esnault-Viehweg in the normal crossing case for the Ve…
Let $\calO_K$ be a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with a perfect residue field. In this paper, for a semi-stable $p$-adic formal scheme $\frakX$ over $\calO_K$ with rigid generic fibre $X$ and canonical log structure $\calM_{\frakX} = \calO_{\frakX}\cap\calO_X^{\times}$, we study Hodge--Tate crystals over the absolute logarithmic prismatic site $(\frakX,\calM_{\frakX})_{\Prism}$. As an application, we give an equivalence between the category of rational Hodge--Tate crystals on the absolute logarithmic prismatic site $(\frakX,\calM_{\frakX})_{\Prism}$ and the c…
We prove the equality of two non-logarithmic ramification filtrations defined by Matsuda and Abbes-Saito for the abelianized absolute Galois group of a complete discrete valuation field in positive characteristic. We also compute the refined Swan conductor and the characteristic form of a character of the fundamental group of a smooth separated scheme over a perfect field of positive characteristic by using sheaves of Witt vectors.
In this paper, we establish a criterion for an overconvergent isocrystal on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic $p>0$ to extend logarithmically to its smooth compactification whose complement is a strict normal crossing divisor. This is a generalization of a result of Kedlaya, who treated the case of unipotent monodromy. Our result is regarded as a $p$-adic analogue of the theory of canonical extension of regular singular integrable connections on smooth varieties of characteristic 0.
Let X be a smooth variety over a field of positive characteristic, and let E be an overconvergent isocrystal on X. We establish a criterion for the existence of a "canonical logarithmic extension" of E to a good compactification of X. In the process, we construct a category of overconvergent log-isocrystals and discuss its basic properties. In subsequent work, we will use these results to show that a canonical logarithmic extension always exists after pulling back E along a suitable cover of X.
Let $K$ be a field which is complete for a discrete valuation. We prove a logarithmic version of the Néron-Ogg-Shafarevich criterion: if $A$ is an abelian variety over $K$ which is cohomologically tame, then $A$ has good reduction in the logarithmic setting, i.e. there exists a projective, log smooth model of $A$ over $\mathcal{O}_K$. This implies in particular the existence of a projective, regular model of $A$, generalizing a result of Künnemann. The proof combines a deep theorem of Gabber with the theory of degenerations of abelian varieties developed by Mumford, Faltings-Chai et al.
The zeta function of a motive over a finite field is multiplicative with respect to the direct sum of motives. It has beautiful analytic properties, as were predicted by the Weil conjectures. There is also a multiplicative zeta function, which instead respects the tensor product of motives. There is no analogue of the Weil conjectures, and we give a sufficient criterion for an analytic continuation to exist. This happens, for example, for cellular varieties, abelian varieties, or genus g > 1 curves with a supersingular Jacobian.
In this paper, we prove a `cut-by-curves criterion' for an overconvergent isocrystal on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic $p>0$ to extend logarithmically to its smooth compactification whose complement is a strict normal crossing divisor, under certain assumption. This is a $p$-adic analogue of a version of cut-by-curves criterion for regular singuarity of an integrable connection on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic 0. In the course of the proof, we also prove a kind of cut-by-curves criteria on solvability, highest ramification break and exponent of $\nabla$-modul…
A map of fine log schemes $X \to Y$ induces a map from the scheme underlying $X$ to Olsson's algebraic stack of strict morphisms of fine log schemes over $Y$. A sheaf on $X$ is called \emph{log flat over} $Y$ iff it is flat over this algebraic stack. This paper is a study of log flatness and the related notions of flatness for maps of monoids and graded rings. It is shown that log flatness is equivalent to a more general notion of "formal log flatness" that makes sense for an arbitrary map of log ringed topoi. Concrete log flatness criteria are given for many $X \to Y$ that occur "in nature," …
Urata showed that a pointed compact hyperbolic variety admits only finitely many maps from a pointed curve. We extend Urata's theorem to the setting of (not necessarily compact) hyperbolically embeddable varieties. As an application, we show that a hyperbolically embeddable variety over a number field $K$ with only finitely many $\mathcal{O}_{L,T}$-points for any number field $L/K$ and any finite set of finite places $T$ of $L$ has, in fact, only finitely many points in any given $\mathbb{Z}$-finitely generated integral domain of characteristic zero. We use this latter result in combination wi…
A complex hypersurface D in complex affine n-space C^n is a linear free divisor (LFD) if its module of logarithmic vector fields has a global basis of linear vector fields. We classify all LFDs for n at most 4. Analogous to Grothendieck's comparison theorem, we say that the global logarithmic comparison theorem (GLCT) holds for D if the complex of global logarithmic differential forms computes the complex cohomology of the complement of D in C^n. We develop a general criterion for the GLCT for LFDs and prove that it is fulfilled whenever the Lie algebra of linear logarithmic vector fields is r…
Suppose that $π\: Y \to X$ is a finite map of normal varieties over a perfect field of characteristic $p > 0$. Previous work of the authors gave a criterion for when Frobenius splittings on $X$ (or more generally any $p^{-e}$-linear map) extend to $Y$. In this paper we give an alternate and highly explicit proof of this criterion (checking term by term) when $π$ is tamely ramified in codimension 1. Some additional examples are also explored.
Let $K$ be a complete local field of characteristic $p$ with perfect residue field. Let $L/K$ be a finite, fully ramified, Galois $p$-extension. If $π_L\in L$ is a prime element, and $p'(x)$ is the derivative of $π_L$'s minimal polynomial over $K$, then the relative different $\euD_{L/K}$ is generated by $p'(π_L)\in L$. Let $v_L$ be the normalized valuation normalized with $v_L(L)=\mathbb{Z}$. We show that any element $ρ\in L$ with $v_L(ρ)\equiv -v_L(p'(π_L))-1\bmod[L:K]$ generates a normal basis, $K[{Gal}(L/K)]\cdotρ=L$. This criterion is tight: Given any integer $i$ such that $i\not\equiv -v…
An old theorem of Weil and Kodaira says that for a compact Kähler manifold $X$ there is a closed logarithmic $1$-form with residue divisor $D$ if and only if $D$ is homologous to zero in $H_{2n-2}(X,\mathbb C)$. In the first part of this paper, we generalize the above theorem to general compact complex manifolds by showing that the necessary and sufficient condition in general is described by a holomorphic invariant called the $\mathcal Q$-flat class. Next, we prove that the holomorphic criterion is reduced to the topological one when $X$ has Property $(H)$. Since all Kähler manifolds have Pro…
