A map of fine log schemes $X \to Y$ induces a map from the scheme underlying $X$ to Olsson's algebraic stack of strict morphisms of fine log schemes over $Y$. A sheaf on $X$ is called \emph{log flat over} $Y$ iff it is flat over this algebraic stack. This paper is a study of log flatness and the related notions of flatness for maps of monoids and graded rings. It is shown that log flatness is equivalent to a more general notion of "formal log flatness" that makes sense for an arbitrary map of log ringed topoi. Concrete log flatness criteria are given for many $X \to Y$ that occur "in nature," such as toric varieties, nodal curves, and the like. For very simple $X \to Y$ it turns out that log flatness is equivalent to previously extant notions of "perfection," thus it provides a generalization for more complicated $X \to Y$ useful for studying moduli of sheaves via degeneration techniques.

This paper is about the logarithmic limit sets of real semi-algebraic sets, and, more generally, about the logarithmic limit sets of sets definable in an o-minimal, polynomially bounded structure. We prove that most of the properties of the logarithmic limit sets of complex algebraic sets hold in the real case. This include the polyhedral structure and the relation with the theory of non-archimedean fields, tropical geometry and Maslov dequantization.
In this paper we will introduce a certain type of morphisms of log schemes (in the sense of Fontaine, Illusie, and Kato) and investigate their moduli. Then by applying this we define a notion of toric algebraic stacks over arbitrary schemes, which may be regarded as torus embeddings within the framework of algebraic stacks, and study some basic properties. Furthermore, we study the stack-theoretic analogue of toroidal embeddings.
We give an effective criterion for openness of a morphism of schemes of finite type over a field: Over a normal base of dimension n, failure of openness is detected by a vertical component in the n'th fibred power of the morphism. This is a topological analogue of a criterion for flatness that originates with Auslander.
On logarithmic paper some real algebraic curves look like smoothed broken lines. Moreover, the broken lines can be obtained as limits of those curves. The corresponding deformation can be viewed as a quantization, in which the broken line is a classical object and the curves are quantum. This generalizes to a new connection between algebraic geometry and the geometry of polyhedra, which is more straight-forward than the other known connections and gives a new insight into constructions used in the topology of real algebraic varieties.
Let $M$ be a smooth complex projective toric variety equipped with an action of a torus $T$, such that the complement $D$ of the open $T$--orbit in $M$ is a simple normal crossing divisor. Let $G$ be a complex reductive affine algebraic group. We prove that an algebraic principal $G$--bundle $E_G\to M$ admits a $T$--equivariant structure if and only if $E_G$ admits a logarithmic connection singular over $D$. If $E_H\to M$ is a $T$-equivariant algebraic principal $H$--bundle, where $H$ is any complex affine algebraic group, then $E_H$ in fact has a canonical integrable logarithmic connection si…
We show that there is a logarithmic algebraic space parameterizing logarithmic morphisms between fixed logarithmic schemes when those logarithmic schemes satisfy natural hypotheses. As a corollary, we obtain the algebraicity of the stack of stable logarithmic maps without restriction on the logarithmic structure of the target.
We give a theorem on the effective non-vanishing problem for algebraic surfaces in positive characteristic. For the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing, the logarithmic Kollar vanishing and the logarithmic semipositivity, we give their counterexamples on ruled surfaces in positive characteristic.
We construct the logarithmic and tropical Picard groups of a family of logarithmic curves and realize the latter as the quotient of the former by the algebraic Jacobian. We show that the logarithmic Jacobian is a proper family of logarithmic abelian varieties over the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable curves, but does not possess an underlying algebraic stack. However, the logarithmic Picard group does have logarithmic modifications that are representable by logarithmic schemes, all of which are obtained by pullback from subdivisions of the tropical Picard group.
We introduce a dual logarithmic residue map for hypersurface singularities and use it to answer a question of Kyoji Saito. Our result extends a theorem of Lê and Saito by an algebraic characterization of hypersurfaces that are normal crossing in codimension one. For free divisors, we relate the latter condition to other natural conditions involving the Jacobian ideal and the normalization. This leads to an algebraic characterization of normal crossing divisors. As a side result, describe all free divisors with Gorenstein singular locus.
We show that if a Laurent polynomial on the coordinate ring of the complex algebraic torus on n variables has vanishing logarithmic Hessian, then up to an automorphism of the torus, the Laurent polynomial depends on at most n-1 variables.
In 1981 J.Noguchi proved that in a logarithmic algebraic manifold, having logarithmic irregularity strictly bigger than its dimension, any entire curve is algebraically degenerate. In the present paper we are interested in the case of manifolds having logarithmic irregularity equal to its dimension. We restrict our attention to Brody curves, for which we resolve the problem completely in dimension 2: Theorem: In a logarithmic surface with logarithmic irregularity 2 and logarithmic Kodaira dimension 2, any Brody curve is algebraically degenerate. We also deal with the case of arbitrary logarith…
Let $M$ be a compact connected Fujiki manifold, $G$ a semisimple affine algebraic group over $\mathbb C$ with one simple factor and $P$ a fixed proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. For a holomorphic principal $G$--bundle $E_G$ over $M$, let ${\mathcal E}_P$ be the holomorphic principal $P$-bundle $E_G\rightarrow E_G/P$ given by the quotient map. We prove that the following three statements are equivalent: (1) ${\rm ad}(E_G)$ is numerically flat, (2) the holomorphic line bundle $\bigwedge^{\rm top} {\rm ad}({\mathcal E}_P)^*$ is nef, and (3) for every reduced irreducible compact complex analytic s…
Local models are schemes, defined in terms of linear-algebraic moduli problems, which give étale-local neighborhoods of integral models of certain p-adic PEL Shimura varieties defined by Rapoport and Zink. In the case of a unitary similitude group whose localization at Q_p is ramified, quasi-split GU_n, Pappas has observed that the original local models are typically not flat, and he and Rapoport have introduced new conditions to the original moduli problem which they conjecture to yield a flat scheme. In a previous paper we proved that their new local models are topologically flat when n is o…
In this article we introduce a notion of logarithmic co-Higgs sheaves associated to a simple normal crossing divisor on a projective manifold, and show their existence with nilpotent co-Higgs fields for fixed ranks and second Chern classes. Then we deal with various moduli problems with logarithmic co-Higgs sheaves involved, such as coherent systems and holomorphic triples, specially over algebraic curves of low genus.
We define the generalized logarithmic Gauss map for algebraic varieties of the complex algebraic torus of any codimension. Moreover, we describe the set of critical points of the logarithmic mapping restricted to our variety, and we show an analogous of Mikhalkin's result on the critical points of the logarithmic map restricted to a hypersurfaces.
In this paper consisting of two parts, we study the integral of a logarithmic differential form on a compact semi-algebraic set in R^n or C^n. In Part I, we prove the convergence of the integral when the semi-algebraic set satisfies allowability (or admissibility), a condition on the dimension of the intersection of the set and the pole divisor of the differential form.
On a smooth algebraic variety over $\mathbb{C}$, we build the tempered subanalytic and Stein tempered subanalytic sites. We construct the sheaf of holomorphic functions tempered at infinity over these sites and study their relations with the sheaf of regular functions, proving in particular that these sheaves are isomorphic on Zariski open subsets. We show that these data allow to define the functors of tempered and Stein tempered analytifications. We study the relations between these two functors and the usual analytification functor. We also obtain algebraization results in the non-proper ca…
We construct a logarithmic model of connections on smooth quasi-projective $n$-dimensional geometrically irreducible varieties defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. It consists of a good compactification of the variety together with $(n+1)$ lattices on it which are stabilized by log differential operators, and compute algebraically de Rham cohomology. The construction is derived from the existence of good Deligne-Malgrange lattices, a theorem of Kedlaya and Mochizuki which consists first in eliminating the turning points. Moreover, we show that a logarithmic model o…
Local models are certain schemes, defined in terms of linear-algebraic moduli problems, which give étale-local neighborhoods of integral models of certain p-adic PEL Shimura varieties defined by Rapoport and Zink. When the group defining the Shimura variety ramifies at p, the local models (and hence the Shimura models) as originally defined can fail to be flat, and it becomes desirable to modify their definition so as to obtain a flat scheme. In the case of unitary similitude groups whose localizations at Q_p are ramified, quasi-split GU_n, Pappas and Rapoport have added new conditions, the so…
Let $X$ be a nonsingular variety defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and $D$ be a free divisor with Jacobian ideal of linear type. We compute the Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along $D$ and compare it with the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the hypersurface complement. Our result establishes a conjecture by Aluffi raised in \cite{hyparr}.
We make an observation which enables one to deduce the existence of an algebraic stack of log maps for all generalized Deligne--Faltings log structures (in particular simple normal crossings divisor) from the simplest case with log structures given by a Cartier divisor (essentially the smooth divisor case).
We study algebraic isomonodromic deformations of flat logarithmic connections on the Riemann sphere with $n\geq 4$ poles, for arbitrary rank. We introduce a natural property of algebraizability for the germ of universal deformation of such a connection. We relate this property to a peculiarity of the corresponding monodromy representation: to yield a finite braid group orbit on the appropriate character variety. Under reasonable assumptions on the deformed connection, we may actually establish an equivalence between both properties. We apply this result in the rank two case to relate finite br…
Let $(X,D)$ be a log smooth pair of dimension $n$, where $D$ is a reduced effective divisor such that the log canonical divisor $K_X + D$ is pseudo-effective. Let $G$ be a connected algebraic subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(X,D)$. We show that $G$ is a semi-abelian variety of dimension $\le \min\{n-\barκ(V), n\}$ with $V := X\setminus D$. In the dimension two, Shigeru Iitaka claimed in his 1979 Osaka J. Math. paper that $\dim G\le \bar{q}(V)$ for a log smooth surface pair with $\barκ(V) = 0$ and $\bar{p}_g(V) = 1$. We (re)prove and generalize this classical result for all surfaces with $\barκ=0$ wit…
Fix a smooth projective curve over a field of characteristic zero and a finite set of punctures. Let G be a connected linear algebraic group. We prove that the moduli of G-bundles with logarithmic connections having fixed residue classes at the punctures is an algebraic stack of finite type.
On any smooth algebraic variety over a $p$-adic local field, we construct a tensor functor from the category of de Rham $p$-adic étale local systems to the category of filtered algebraic vector bundles with integrable connections satisfying the Griffiths transversality, which we view as a $p$-adic analogue of Deligne's classical Riemann--Hilbert correspondence. A crucial step is to construct canonical extensions of the desired connections to suitable compactifications of the algebraic variety with logarithmic poles along the boundary, in a precise sense characterized by the eigenvalues of resi…
We introduce the concept of directed orbifold, namely triples (X, V, D) formed by a directed algebraic or analytic variety (X, V), and a ramification divisor D, where V is a coherent subsheaf of the tangent bundle TX. In this context, we introduce an algebra of orbifold jet differentials and their sections. These jet sections can be seen as algebraic differential operators acting on germs of curves, with meromorphic coefficients, whose poles are supported by D and multiplicities are bounded by the ramification indices of the components of D. We estimate precisely the curvature tensor of the co…
The coamoeba of any complex algebraic plane curve $V$ is its image in the real torus under the argument map. The area counted with multiplicity of the coamoeba of any algebraic curve in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$ is bounded in terms of the degree of the curve. We show in this Note that up to multiplication by a constant in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$, the complex algebraic plane curves whose coamoebas are of maximal area (counted with multiplicity) are defined over $\mathbb{R}$, and their real loci are Harnack curves possibly with ordinary real isolated double points (c.f. \cite{MR-00}). In addition, we charac…
Let $S$ be a finite subset of a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g \geq 2$. Let $\cat{M}_{lc}(n,d)$ denote the moduli space of pairs $(E,D)$, where $E$ is a holomorphic vector bundle over $X$ and $D$ is a logarithmic connection on $E$ singular over $S$, with fixed residues in the centre of $\mathfrak{gl}(n,\C)$, where $n$ and $d$ are mutually corpime. Let $L$ denote a fixed line bundle with a logarithmic connection $D_L$ singular over $S$. Let $\cat{M}'_{lc}(n,d)$ and $\cat{M}_{lc}(n,L)$ be the moduli spaces parametrising all pairs $(E,D)$ such that underlying vector bundle $E$ …
In this article, we first give some elementary proprieties of monoids and fans, then construct a toric scheme over an arbitrary ring, from a given fan. Using Valuative Criterion, we prove that this scheme is separated and give the sufficient and necessary condition when it is proper. We also study the regularity and logarithmic regularity of it. Finally we study the morphisms of toric schemes induced by the homomorphisms of fans.
We set up a BNR correspondence for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a curve with a parabolic structure over any algebraically closed field. This leads to a concrete description of generic fibers of the associated strongly parabolic Hitchin map. We also show that the global nilpotent cone is equi-dimensional with half dimension of the total space. As a result, we prove the flatness and surjectivity of this map and the existence of very stable parabolic vector bundles.
We study Voronoi cells in the statistical setting by considering preimages of the maximum likelihood estimator that tessellate an open probability simplex. In general, logarithmic Voronoi cells are convex sets. However, for certain algebraic models, namely finite models, models with ML degree 1, linear models, and log-linear (or toric) models, we show that logarithmic Voronoi cells are polytopes. As a corollary, the algebraic moment map has polytopes for both its fibres and its image, when restricted to the simplex. We also compute non-polytopal logarithmic Voronoi cells using numerical algebr…
We prove that the complement of a very generic curve of degree $d$ at least equal to 15 in the projective plane is hyperbolic in the sens of Kobayashi (here, the terminology ``very generic'' refers to complements of countable unions of proper algebraic subsets of the parameter space). We first consider the Dethloff and Lu's generalisation to the logarithmic situation of Demailly's jet bundles. We study their base loci for surfaces of log-general type in the same way as it was done in the compact case by Demailly and El Goul. With some condition on log-Chern classes, any entire holomorphic map …
We compare the Kummer flat (resp. Kummer etale) cohomology with the flat (resp. etale) cohomology with coefficients in smooth commutative group schemes, finite flat group schemes and the logarithmic multiplicative group of Kato. We will be particularly interested in the case of algebraic tori in the Kummer flat topology. We also make some computations for certain special cases of the base log scheme.
We study the hyperbolicity of the log variety $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$, where $X$ is a very general hypersurface of degree $d\geq 2n+1$ (which is the bound predicted by the Kobayashi conjecture). Using a positivity result for the sheaf of (twisted) logarithmic vector fields, which may be of independent interest, we show that any log-subvariety of $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$ is of log-general type, give a new proof of the algebraic hyperbolicity of $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$, and exclude the existence of maximal rank families of entire curves in the complement of the universal degree $d$ hypersurface. Moreover, we…
The aim of this article is to given an extension of the prismatization functor for $p$-adic formal schemes (whose construction was first sketched by Drinfeld and then given by Bhatt-Lurie) to all schemes over $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbf{Z})$. We then prove some basic properties of this extension (algebraicity, flatness for syntomic morphisms, perfectness of cohomology) and show that for smooth schemes over $\mathbf{Q}$ this construction recovers (a version of) the filtered de Rham stack.
In this paper, we prove that the zero-locus of any global holomorphic log-one-form on a projective log-smooth pair $\left(X,D\right)$ of log-general type must be non-empty. Applying this result, we give an answer to the algebraic hyperbolicity part of Shafarevich's conjecture, with the generic fiber being Kawamata-log-terminal (klt) and of log-general type.
