Let A be a commutative k-algebra, where k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, and let M be an A-module. We consider the following question: Under what conditions on A and M is it possible to find a connection on M?
We consider maximal Cohen-Macaulay (MCM) modules over complete CM algebras that are isolated singularities, and usually assume that the singularities have finite CM representation type. It is known that over a simple singularity of dimension at most two, any MCM module admits an integrable connection. We prove that over a simple singularity of dimension at least three, an MCM module admits connections if and only if it is free. Among singularities of finite CM representation type, we find examples of curves with MCM modules that do not admit connections, and threefolds with non-free MCM modules that do admit connections.
Let A be a singularity not necessarily of finite CM representation type, and consider the condition that A is a Gorenstein curve or a Q-Gorenstein singularity of dimension at least two. We show that this condition is sufficient for the canonical module of A to admit an integrable connection, and conjecture that it is also necessary. In support of the conjecture, we show that if A is a monomial curve singularity, then the canonical module of A admits an integrable connection if and only if A is Gorenstein.
The main aim of this paper is to classify Ulrich ideals and Ulrich modules over two-dimensional Gorenstein rational singularities (rational double points) from a geometric point of view. To achieve this purpose, we introduce the notion of (weakly) special Cohen-Macaulay modules with respect to ideals, and study the relationship between those modules and Ulrich modules with respect to good ideals.
In this paper, we characterize Ulrich modules over cyclic quotient surface singularities by using the notion of special Cohen-Macaulay modules. We also investigate the number of indecomposable Ulrich modules for a given cyclic quotient surface singularity, and show that the number of exceptional curves in the minimal resolution gives a boundary for the number of indecomposable Ulrich modules.
In this article, we study Cohen-Macaulay modules over non-reduced curve singularities. We prove that the rings $k[[x,y,z]]/(xy, y^q -z^2)$ have tame Cohen-Macaulay representation type. For the singularity $k[[x,y,z]]/(xy, z^2)$ we give an explicit description of all indecomposable Cohen--Macaulay modules and apply the obtained classification to construct explicit families of indecomposable matrix factorizations of $(xy)^2 \in k[[x,y]]$.

We study binomial D-modules, which generalize A-hypergeometric systems. We determine explicitly their singular loci and provide three characterizations of their holonomicity. The first of these states that a binomial D-module is holonomic if and only if its corresponding singular locus is proper. The second characterization is an equivalence of holonomicity and L-holonomicity for these systems. The third refines the second by giving more detailed information about the L-characteristic variety of a non-holonomic binomial D-module.
We generalize the results of Kahn about a correspondence between Cohen-Macaulay modules and vector bundles to non-commutative surface singularities. As an application, we give examples of non-commutative surface singularities which are not Cohen-Macaulay finite, but are Cohen-Macaulay tame.
We first generalize classical Auslander-Reiten duality for isolated singularities to cover singularities with a one-dimensional singular locus. We then define the notion of CT modules for non-isolated singularities and we show that these are intimately related to noncommutative crepant resolutions (NCCRs). When R has isolated singularities, CT modules recover the classical notion of cluster tilting modules but in general the two concepts differ. Then, wanting to generalize the notion of NCCRs to cover partial resolutions of Spec R, in the main body of this paper we introduce a theory of modify…
This note explains a construction of a Poisson manifold whose symplectic foliation describes a deformation of a moduli space of meromorphic connections with unramified irregular singularities. In particular, this deformation of the moduli space corresponds to the unfolding of irregular singularities of the meromorphic connections. This is an announcement of some results in the forthcoming paper.
In this article we develop a new method to deal with maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over non-isolated surface singularities. In particular, we give a negative answer on an old question of Schreyer about surface singularities with only countably many indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. Next, we prove that the degenerate cusp singularities have tame Cohen-Macaulay representation type. Our approach is illustrated on the case of $k\llbracket x,y,z\rrbracket/(xyz)$ as well as several other rings. This study of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over non-isolated singularities leads to a new …
In this paper we characterize the value set $Δ$ of the $R$-modules of the form $R+zR$ for the local ring $R$ associated to a germ $ξ$ of an irreducible plane curve singularity with one Puiseux pair. In the particular case of the module of Kähler differentials attached to $ξ$, we recover some results of Delorme. From our characterization of $Δ$ we introduce a proper subset of semimodules over the value semigroup of the ring $R$. Moreover, we provide a geometric algorithm to construct all possible semimodules in this subset for a given value semigroup.
We shall show that the stable categories of graded Cohen-Macaulay modules over quotient singularities have tilting objects. In particular, these categories are triangle equivalent to derived categories of finite dimensional algebras. Our method is based on higher dimensional Auslander-Reiten theory, which gives cluster tilting objects in the stable categories of (ungraded) Cohen-Macaulay modules.
In previous work, the authors have developed a geometric theory of fundamental strata to study connections on the projective line with irregular singularities of parahoric formal type. In this paper, the moduli space of connections that contain regular fundamental strata with fixed combinatorics at each singular point is constructed as a smooth Poisson reduction. The authors then explicitly compute the isomonodromy equations as an integrable system. This result generalizes work of Jimbo, Miwa, and Ueno to connections whose singularities have parahoric formal type.
Burban-Drozd showed that the degenerate cusp singularities have tame Cohen-Macaulay representation type, and classified all indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules over them. One of their main example is the non-isolated singularity $W=xyz$. On the other hand, Abouzaid-Auroux-Efimov-Katzarkov-Orlov showed that $W=xyz$ is mirror to a pair of pants. In this paper, we investigate homological mirror symmetry of these indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules for $xyz$. Namely, we show that closed geodesics (with a flat $\mathbb{C}$-bundle) of a hyperbolic pair of pants have a one-to-one correspondence w…
In this paper we generalize Artin-Verdier, Esnault and Wunram construction of McKay correspondence to arbitrary Gorenstein surface singularities. The key idea is the definition and a systematic use of a degeneracy module, which is an enhancement of the first Chern class construction via a degeneracy locus. We study also deformation and moduli questions. Among our main result we quote: a full classification of special reflexive MCM modules on normal Gorenstein surface singularities in terms of divisorial valuations centered at the singularity, a first Chern class determination at an adequate re…
Blowing up a rational surface singularity in a reflexive module gives a (any) partial resolution dominated by the minimal resolution. The main theorem shows how deformations of the pair (singularity, module) relates to deformations of the corresponding pair of partial resolution and locally free strict transform, and to deformations of the underlying spaces. The results imply some recent conjectures on small resolutions and flops.
In this paper, we consider the generalized isomonodromic deformations of rank two irregular connections on the Riemann sphere. We introduce Darboux coordinates on the parameter space of a family of rank two irregular connections by apparent singularities. By the Darboux coordinates, we describe the generalized isomonodromic deformations as Hamiltonian systems.
A meromorphic connection on the complex projective line induces formal connections at each singular point, and these formal connections constitute the local behavior at the singularities. In this primarily expository paper, we discuss the extent to which specified local behavior at singular points determines the global connection. In particular, given a finite set of points and a collection of ``formal types'' at these points, does there exist a moduli space of meromorphic connections with this local behavior, and if so, when is this moduli space nonempty or a singleton? In this paper, we disc…
N.Katz's middle convolution algorithm provides a description of rigid connections on the projective line with regular singularities. We extend the algorithm by adding the Fourier transform to it. The extended algorithm provides a description of rigid connections with arbitrary singularities.
We generalize the construction of geometric superpolynomials for unibranch plane curve singularities from our prior paper from rank one to any ranks. The new feature is the definition of counterparts of Jacobian factors (directly related to compactified Jacobians) for higher ranks, which is parallel to the classical passage from invertible bundles to vector bundles over algebraic curves. This is an entirely local theory, connected with affine Springer fibers for non-reduced (germs of) spectral curves. We conjecture and justify numerically the connection of our geometric polynomials in arbitrar…
We study here the relative cohomology and the Gauss-Manin connections associated to an isolated singularity of a function on a manifold with boundary, i.e. with a fixed hyperplane section. We prove several relative analogs of classical theorems obtained mainly by E. Brieskorn and B. Malgrange, concerning the properties of the Gauss-Manin connection as well as its relations with the Picard-Lefschetz monodromy and the asymptotics of integrals of holomorphic forms along the vanishing cycles. Finally, we give an application in isochore deformation theory, i.e. the deformation theory of boundary si…
We continue the development of the study of the equisingularity of isolated singularities, in the determinantal case. This version of the paper includes a substantial amount of new material (76% larger). The new material introduces the idea of the landscape of singularity, which includes the allowable deformations of the singularity and associated structure useful for equisingularity questions. Fixing a presentation matrix M of a determinantal singularity means viewing the singularity as a section via M of the set of matrices of a given or smaller rank. Varying M gives the allowable deformatio…
Let $X$ be a variety and $H$ a Cartier divisor on $X$. We prove that if $H$ has Du Bois (or DB) singularities, then $X$ has Du Bois singularities near $H$. As a consequence, if $X \to S$ is a family over a smooth curve $S$ whose special fiber has Du Bois singularities, then the nearby fibers also have Du Bois singularities. We prove this by obtaining an injectivity theorem for certain maps of canonical modules. As a consequence, we also obtain a restriction theorem for certain non-lc ideals.
We explore the connection between the rank of a polynomial and the singularities of its vanishing locus. We first describe the singularity of generic polynomials of fixed rank. We then focus on cubic surfaces. Cubic surfaces with isolated singularities are known to fall into 22 singularity types. We compute the rank of a cubic surface of each singularity type. This enables us to find the possible singular loci of a cubic surface of fixed rank. Finally, we study connections to the Hessian discriminant. We show that a cubic surface with singularities that are not ordinary double points lies on t…
We give sufficient conditions for a Frobenius category to be equivalent to the category of Gorenstein projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. We then apply this result to the Frobenius category of special Cohen-Macaulay modules over a rational surface singularity, where we show that the associated stable category is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of a certain discrepant partial resolution of the given rational singularity. In particular, this produces uncountably many Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings of finite GP type. We also apply our method to representation theory, obt…
This note provides a connection between the Hodge spectrum and the Hodge ideals recently developed by Mustaţǎ--Popa in the case of weighted homogeneous isolated singularities.
In this paper we give a complete answer to a question posed by Dimca and Greuel about the quotient of the Milnor and Tjurina numbers of a plane curve singularity. We put this question into a general framework of the study of the difference of Milnor and Tjurina numbers for isolated complete intersection singularities showing its connection with other problems in singularity theory.
Let $X$ be a proper smooth algebraic variety over a field $k$ of characteristic zero and let $D$ be a divisor with simple normal crossings. Let $M$ be a vector bundle over $X-D$ equipped with a flat connection with possible irregular singularities along $D$. We define a cleanliness condition which roughly says that the singularities of the connection are controlled by the singularities at the generic points of $D$. When this condition is satisfied, we compute explicitly the associated log-characteristic cycle, and relate it to the so-called refined irregularities. As a corollary of a log-varia…
We study Serre duality in the singularity category of an isolated Gorenstein singularity and find an explicit formula for the duality pairing in terms of generalised fractions and residues. For hypersurfaces we recover the residue formula of the string theorists Kapustin and Li. These results are obtained from an explicit construction of complete injective resolutions of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules.
The generic element of the moduli space of logarithmic connections with parabolic points on holomorphic vector bundle over the Riemann sphere can be represented by a Fuchsian equation with some singularities and some apparent singularities. We analyze the case of rank $3$ vector bundle which leads to third order Fuchsian equation. We find coordinates on an open subset of the moduli space and we construct a non-trivial part of the moduli space by blowing up along a variety in a special case.
The classical additive Deligne-Simpson problem is the existence problem for Fuchsian connections with residues at the singular points in specified adjoint orbits. Crawley-Boevey found the solution in 2003 by reinterpreting the problem in terms of quiver varieties. A more general version of this problem, solved by Hiroe, allows additional unramified irregular singularities. We apply the theory of fundamental and regular strata due to Bremer and Sage to formulate a version of the Deligne-Simpson problem in which certain ramified singularities are allowed. These allowed singular points are called…
We prove that, in characteristic 0, any Hasse-Schmidt module structure can be recovered from its underlying integrable connection, and consequently Hasse--Schmidt modules and modules endowed with an integrable connection coincide.
This paper is devoted to the comparison of the notions of regularity for algebraic connections and (holonomic) regularity for algebraic $\mathcal D$-modules.
