For the Galois closure $\Xgal$ of a generic projection from a surface $X$, it is believed that $π_1(\Xgal)$ gives rise to new invariants of $X$. However, in all examples this group is surprisingly simple. In this article, we offer an explanation for this phenomenon: We compute a quotient of $π_1(\Xgal)$ that depends on $π_1(X)$ and data from the generic projection only. In all known examples except one, this quotient is in fact isomorphic to $π_1(\Xgal)$. As a byproduct, we simplify part of the computations of Moishezon, Teicher and others.
A criterion for the existence of a plane model of an algebraic curve such that the Galois closures of projections from two points are the same is presented. As an application, it is proved that the Hermitian curve in positive characteristic coincides with the Galois closures of projections of some plane curve from some two non-uniform points.
We use Galois closures of finite rational maps between complex projective varieties to introduce a new method for producing varieties such that the holomorphic part of the cup product map has non-trivial kernel. We then apply our result to the two-dimensional case and we construct a new family of surfaces which are Lagrangian in their Albanese variety. Moreover, we analyze these surfaces computing their Chern invariants, and proving that they are not fibred over curves of genus greater than one.
It is shown that the Galois closure of the henselization of a one dimensional local field arising in geometric and arithmetic situation is separably closed.
We introduce a notion of "Galois closure" for extensions of rings. We show that the notion agrees with the usual notion of Galois closure in the case of an S_n degree n extension of fields. Moreover, we prove a number of properties of this construction; for example, we show that it is functorial and respects base change. We also investigate the behavior of this Galois closure construction for various natural classes of ring extensions.
Let V be a nonsingular projective algebraic variety of dimension n. Suppose there exists a very ample divisor D such that D^n=6 and dim H^0(V, O(D))=n+3. Then, (V, D) defines a D_6-Galois embedding if and only if it is a Galois closure variety of a smooth cubic in P^{n+1} with respect to a suitable projection center such that the pull back of hyperplane of P^n is linearly equivalent to D.
Galois closures of commutative rank n ring extensions were introduced by Bhargava and the second author. In this paper, we generalize the construction to the case of non-commutative rings. We show that non-commutative Galois closures commute with base change and satisfy a product formula. As an application, we give a uniform construction of many of the representations arising in arithmetic invariant theory, including many Vinberg representations.
We prove the existence of a Galois closure for towers of torsors under finite group schemes over a proper, geometrically connected and geometrically reduced algebraic stack $X$ over a field $k$. This is done by describing the Nori fundamental gerbe of an essentially finite cover of $X$. A similar result is also obtained for the $S$-fundamental gerbe.
Let $R$ be a ring and let $A$ be a finite projective $R$-algebra of rank $n$. Manjul Bhargava and Matthew Satriano have recently constructed an $R$-algebra $G(A/R)$, the Galois closure of $A/R$. Many natural questions were asked at the end of their paper. Here we address one of these questions, proving the existence of the natural constructions they call intermediate $S_n$-closures. We will also study properties of these constructions, generalizing some of their results, and proving new results both on the intermediate $S_n$-closures and on $G(A/R)$.
The automorphism group of the Galois covering induced by a pluri-canonical generic covering of a projective space is investigated. It is shown that by means of such coverings one obtains, in dimensions one and two, serieses of specific actions of the symmetric groups $S_d$ on curves and surfaces not deformable to an action of $S_d$ which is not the full automorphism group. As an application, new DIF $\ne$ DEF examples for $G$-varieties in complex and real geometry are given.
Let $X$ be a reduced connected $k$-scheme pointed at a rational point $x \in X(k)$. By using tannakian techniques we construct the Galois closure of an essentially finite $k$-morphism $f:Y\to X$ satisfying the condition $H^0(Y,\mathcal{O}_Y)=k$; this Galois closure is a torsor $p:\hat{X}_Y\to X$ dominating $f$ by an $X$-morphism $λ:\hat{X}_Y\to Y$ and universal for this property. Moreover we show that $λ:\hat{X}_Y\to Y$ is a torsor under some finite group scheme we describe. Furthermore we prove that the direct image of an essentially finite vector bundle over $Y$ is still an essentially finit…
Let $X$ be a smooth hypersurface $X$ of degree $d\geq4$ in a projective space $\mathbb P^{n+1}$. We consider a projection of $X$ from $p\in\mathbb P^{n+1}$ to a plane $H\cong\mathbb P^n$. This projection induces an extension of function fields $\mathbb C(X)/\mathbb C(\mathbb P^n)$. The point $p$ is called a Galois point if the extension is Galois. In this paper, we will give a necessary and sufficient conditions for $X$ to have Galois points by using linear automorphisms.
We introduce the new notion of the "quasi-Galois point" in Algebraic geometry, which is a generalization of the Galois point. A point $P$ in projective plane is said to be quasi-Galois for a plane curve if the curve admits a non-trivial birational transformation which preserves the fibers of the projection $π_P$ from $P$. We discuss the standard form of the defining equation of curves with quasi-Galois points, the number of quasi-Galois points, the structure of the Galois group for the projection, relations with dual curves, and so on. Our theory also has applications to the study of automorph…
Let $C \subset \mathbb{P}^2$ be a plane curve of degree at least three. A point $P$ in projective plane is said to be Galois if the function field extension induced by the projection $π_P: C \dashrightarrow \mathbb P^1$ from $P$ is Galois. Further we say that a Galois point is extendable if any birational transformation induced by the Galois group can be extended to a linear transformation of the projective plane. This article is the second part of [2], where we showed that the Galois group at an extendable Galois point $P$ has a natural action on the dual curve $C^* \subset \mathbb{P}^{2*}$ w…
We characterize all $(n-2)$-dimensional linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^{n}$ such that the induced linear projection, when restricted to the rational normal curve, gives a Galois morphism. We give an explicit description of these spaces as a disjoint union of locally closed subvarieties in the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(n-2,n)$.
For a plane curve, a point in the projective plane is said to be Galois when the point projection induces a Galois extension of function fields. We give a new characterization of a Fermat curve whose degree minus one is a power of $p$ in characteristic $p>2$, which is sometimes called Hermitian, by the number of Galois points lying on the curve.
A point on a plane curve is said to be Galois (for the curve) if the projection from the point as a map from the curve to a line induces a Galois extension of function fields. It is known that the number of Galois points is finite except for a certain explicit example. We establish upper bounds for the number of Galois points for all plane curves other than the example in terms of the genus, degree and the generic order of contact, and settle curves attaining the bounds.
Given a family of Galois coverings of the projective line we give a simple sufficient condition ensuring that the closure of the image of the family via the period mapping is a special (or Shimura) subvariety in A_g. By a computer program we get the list of all families in genus up to 8 satisfying our condition. There is no family in genus 8, all of them are in genus at most 7. These examples are related to a conjecture of Oort. Among them we get the cyclic examples constructed by various authors (Shimura, Mostow, De Jong-Noot, Rohde, Moonen and others) and the abelian non-cyclic examples foun…
This is the final paper in a series of four, concerning the surface $T \times T$ embedded in $\mathbb{CP}^8$, where $T$ is a the one dimensional torus. In this paper we compute the fundamental group of the Galois cover of the surface with respect to a generic projection onto $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and show that it is nilpotent of class 3. This is the first time such a group is presented as the fundamental group of a Galois cover of a surface.
Let $X$ be a variety (possibly non-complete or singular) over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $0$. For a prime number $\ell$, let $ρ_\ell$ be the Galois representation on the first $\ell$-adic cohomology of $X$. We show that if $\ell$ varies the image of $ρ_\ell$ is of bounded index in the group of $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points of its Zariski closure. We use this to improve a recent result of Litt about arithmetic representations of geometric fundamental groups. Litt's result says that there exist constants $N = N(X,\ell)$ such that every arithmetic representation $π_1(X_{\bar{k}})…
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be an irreducible plane curve of $\text{PG}(2,\mathbb{K})$ where $\mathbb{K}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. A point $Q\in \mathcal{C}$ is an inner Galois point for $\mathcal{C}$ if the projection $π_Q$ from $Q$ is Galois. Assume that $\mathcal{C}$ has two different inner Galois points $Q_1$ and $Q_2$, both simple. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be the respective Galois groups. Under the assumption that $G_i$ fixes $Q_i$, for $i=1,2$, we provide a complete classification of $G=\langle G_1,G_2 \rangle$ and we exhibit a curve for each such $G$. Our proof rel…
The aim of this paper is to construct "special" isogenies between K3 surfaces, which are not Galois covers between K3 surfaces, but are obtained by composing cyclic Galois covers, induced by quotients by symplectic automorphisms. We determine the families of K3 surfaces for which this construction is possible. To this purpose we will prove that there are infinitely many big families of K3 surfaces which both admit a finite symplectic automorphism and are (desingularizations of) quotients of other K3 surfaces by a symplectic automorphism. In the case of involutions, for any $n\in\mathbb{N}_{>0}…
We give a canonical procedure associating to an algebraic number a first a hyperelliptic curve C_a, and then a triangle curve (D_a, G_a) obtained through the normal closure of an associated Belyi function. In this way we show that the absolute Galois group Gal(\bar{\Q} /\Q) acts faithfully on the set of isomorphism classes of marked triangle curves, and on the set of connected components of marked moduli spaces of surfaces isogenous to a higher product (these are the free quotients of a product C_1 x C_2 of curves of respective genera g_1, g_2 >= 2 by the action of a finite group G). We show t…
Let $k$ be a field, let $G$ be a reductive $k$-group and $V$ an affine $k$-variety on which $G$ acts. In this note we continue our study of the notion of cocharacter-closed $G(k)$-orbits in $V$. In earlier work we used a rationality condition on the point stabilizer of a $G$-orbit to prove Galois ascent/descent and Levi ascent/descent results concerning cocharacter-closure for the corresponding $G(k)$-orbit in $V$. In the present paper we employ building-theoretic techniques to derive analogous results.
Let $X$ be an irreducible, reduced complex projective hypersurface of degree $d$. A point $P$ not contained in $X$ is called uniform if the monodromy group of the projection of $X$ from $P$ is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_d$. We prove that the locus of non--uniform points is finite when $X$ is smooth or a general projection of a smooth variety. In general, it is contained in a finite union of linear spaces of codimension at least $2$, except possibly for a special class of hypersurfaces with singular locus linear in codimension $1$. Moreover, we generalise a result of Fukasawa and Taka…
Given a generic field extension F/k of degree n>3 (i.e. the Galois group of the normal closure of F is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$), we prove that the norm torus, defined as the kernel of the norm map $N:R_{F/k}(G_m)\to\G_m$, is not rational over k.
In this work we study the monodromy group of covers $φ\circ ψ$ of curves \linebreak $\mathcal{Y}\xrightarrow {\quad ψ} \mathcal{X} \xrightarrow {\quad φ} \mathbb{P}^{1}$, where $ψ$ is a $q$-fold cyclic étale cover and $φ$ is a totally ramified $p$-fold cover, with $p$ and $q$ different prime numbers with $p$ odd. We show that the Galois group $\mathcal{G}$ of the Galois closure $\mathcal{Z}$ of $φ\circ ψ$ is of the form $ \mathcal{G} = \mathbb{Z}_q^s \rtimes \mathcal{U}$, where $0 \leq s \leq p-1$ and $\mathcal{U}$ is a simple transitive permutation group of degree $p$. Since the simple transi…
Given a smooth projective curve $X$ of genus at least 2 over a number field $k$, Grothendieck's Section Conjecture predicts that the canonical projection from the étale fundamental group of $X$ onto the absolute Galois group of $k$ has a section if and only if the curve has a rational point. We show that there exist curves where the above map has a section over each completion of $k$ but not over $k$. In the appendix Victor Flynn gives explicit examples in genus 2. Our result is a consequence of a more general investigation of the existence of sections for the projection of the étale fundament…
Let $X$ be an algebraic surface of degree $5$, which is considered as a branch cover of $\mathbb{CP}^2$ with respect to a generic projection. The surface has a natural Galois cover with Galois group $S_5$. In this paper, we deal with the fundamental groups of Galois covers of degree $5$ surfaces that degenerate to nice plane arrangements; each of them is a union of five planes such that no three planes meet in a line.
Given an object over the algebraic closure Qbar of Q, there is often no reason for invariants of the corresponding holomorphic object to be preserved by the absolute Galois group Gal(Qbar/Q), and in general this is not true, although it is sometimes surprising to observe in practice. The case of covers of the projective line branched only over the points 0, 1, and infinity, through Belyi's theorem, leads to Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants program for understanding the absolute Galois group through its faithful action on such covers. This note is motivated by Catanese's question about a higher…
Suppose that C is a smooth, projective, geometrically connected curve of genus g > 2 defined over a number field K. Suppose that x is a K-rational point of C. Denote the Lie algebra of the unipotent completion (over Q_ell) of the fundamental group of the corresponding complex analytic curve by p(C,x). This is acted on by both G_K (the Galois group of K) and Gamma, the mapping class group of the pointed complex curve. In this paper we show that the algebraic cycle C_x-C_x^- in the jacobian of C controls the size of the image of G_K in Aut p(C,x). More precisely, we give necessary and sufficient…
Let T be the complex projective torus, and X the surface CP^1 X T. Let X_Gal be its Galois cover with respect to a generic projection to CP^2. In this paper we compute the fundamental group of X_Gal, using the degeneration and regeneration techniques, the Moishezon-Teicher braid monodromy algorithm and group calculations. We show that pi_1(X_Gal) = Z^10.
The Galois group of a parameterized polynomial system of equations encodes the structure of the solutions. This monodromy group acts on the set of solutions for a general set of parameters, that is, on the fiber of a projection from the incidence variety of parameters and solutions onto the space of parameters. When this projection is decomposable, the Galois group is imprimitive, and we show that the structure can be exploited for computational improvements. Furthermore, we develop a new algorithm for solving these systems based on a suitable trace test. We illustrate our method on examples i…
Let $X$ be the surface $\T\times\T$ where $\T$ is the complex torus. This paper is the third in a series, studying the fundamental group of the Galois cover of $X$ \wrt a generic projection onto $\C¶^2$. Van Kampen Theorem gives a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of the branch curve, with 54 generators and more than 2000 relations. Here we introduce a certain natural quotient (obtained by identifying pairs of generators), prove it is a quotient of a Coxeter group related to the degeneration of $X$, and show that this quotient is virtually nilpotent.
Let T be a complex torus, and X the surface CP^1 x T. If T is embedded in CP^{n-1} then X may be embedded in CP^{2n-1}. Let X_Gal be its Galois cover with respect to a generic projection to CP^2. In this paper we compute the fundamental group of X_Gal, using the degeneration and regeneration techniques, the Moishezon-Teicher braid monodromy algorithm and group calculations. We show that pi_1(X_Gal) = Z^{4n-2}.
We finish the proof of the conjecture of F. Bogomolov and F. Pop: Let $F_{1}$ and $F_{2}$ be fields finitely-generated and of transcendence degree $\geq 2$ over $k_{1}$ and $k_{2}$, respectively, where $k_{1}$ is either $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ or $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_{p}$, and $k_{2}$ is algebraically closed. We denote by $G_{F_1}$ and $G_{F_2}$ their respective absolute Galois groups. Then the canonical map $φ_{F_{1}, F_{2}}: \Isom^i(F_1, F_2)\rightarrow \Isom^{\Out}_{\cont}(G_{F_2}, G_{F_1})$ from the isomorphisms, up to Frobenius twists, of the inseparable closures of $F_1$ and $F_2$ to continuous …
In his previous paper (Math. Res. Letters 7(2000), 123--132) the author proved that in characteristic zero the jacobian $J(C)$ of a hyperelliptic curve $C: y^2=f(x)$ has only trivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closure $K_a$ of the ground field $K$ if the Galois group $Gal(f)$ of the irreducible polynomial $f(x) \in K[x]$ is either the symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$. Here $n>4$ is the degree of $f$. In math.AG/0003002 we extended this result to the case of certain ``smaller'' Galois groups. In particular, we treated the infinite series $n=2^r+1, Gal(f)=L_2(2^r)$ and $…
Let T be a Tannakian category over a field k of characteristic 0 and π(T) its fundamental group. In this paper we prove that there is a bijection between the otimes-equivalence classes of Tannakian subcategories of T and the normal affine group sub-T-schemes of π(T). We apply this result to the Tannakian category T_1(k) generated by motives of niveau \leq 1 defined over k, whose fundamental group is called the motivic Galois group G_mot(T_1(k)) of motives of niveau \leq 1. We find four short exact sequences of affine group sub-T_1(k)-schemes of G_mot(T_1(k)), correlated one to each other by in…
Let E be a Real or Quaternionic Hermitian vector bundle over a Klein surface M. We study the action of the gauge group of E on the space of Galois-invariant unitary connections and we show that the closure of a semi-stable orbit contains a unique unitary orbit of projectively flat, Galois-invariant connections. We then use this invariant-theoretic perspective to prove a version of the Narasimhan-Seshadri correspondence in this context: S-equivalence classes of semi-stable Real and Quaternionic vector bundes are in bijective correspondence with equivalence classes of certain appropriate represe…
