Let $X$ be the surface $\T\times\T$ where $\T$ is the complex torus. This paper is the third in a series, studying the fundamental group of the Galois cover of $X$ \wrt a generic projection onto $\C¶^2$.
Van Kampen Theorem gives a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of the branch curve, with 54 generators and more than 2000 relations. Here we introduce a certain natural quotient (obtained by identifying pairs of generators), prove it is a quotient of a Coxeter group related to the degeneration of $X$, and show that this quotient is virtually nilpotent.
We study Coxeter groups from which there is a natural map onto a symmetric group. Such groups have natural quotient groups related to presentations of the symmetric group on an arbitrary set $T$ of transpositions. These quotients, denoted here by C_Y(T), are a special type of the generalized Coxeter groups defined in \cite{CST}, and also arise in the computation of certain invariants of surfaces. We use a surprising action of $S_n$ on the kernel of the surjection $C_Y(T) \ra S_n$ to show that this kernel embeds in the direct product of $n$ copies of the free group $π_1(T)$ (with the exception …
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding with two Galois points for quotient curves is presented. We apply our criterion to several curves, for example, some cyclic subcovers of the Giulietti-Korchmaros curve or of the curves constructed by Skabelund. They are new examples of plane curves with two Galois points.
In this article we provide further evidence for the monstrous proposal of Daniel Allcock, by giving a plausible but still conjectural explanation for the deflation relation in the Coxeter group quotient of the orbifold fundamental group.
Let $C(T)$ be a generalized Coxeter group, which has a natural map onto one of the classical Coxeter groups, either $B_n$ or $D_n$. Let $C_Y(T)$ be a natural quotient of $C(T)$, and if $C(T)$ is simply-laced (which means all the relations between the generators has order 2 or 3), $C_Y(T)$ is a generalized Coxeter group, too . Let $A_{t,n}$ be a group which contains $t$ Abelian groups generated by $n$ elements. The main result in this paper is that $C_Y(T)$ is isomorphic to $A_{t,n} \semidirect B_n$ or $A_{t,n} \semidirect D_n$, depends on whether the signed graph $T$ contains loops or not, or …
In this paper, we develop the main step in the global theory for the mod-$\ell$ analogue of Bogomolov's program in birational anabelian geometry for higher-dimensional function fields over algebraically closed fields. More precisely, we show how to reconstruct a function field $K$ of transcendence degree $\geq 5$ over an algebraically closed field, up-to inseparable extensions, from the mod-$\ell$ abelian-by-central Galois group of $K$ endowed with the collection of mod-$\ell$ rational quotients.
We consider the quotient X of bi-elliptic surface by a finite automorphism group. If X is smooth, then it is a bi-elliptic surface or ruled surface with irregularity one. As a corollary any bi-elliptic surface cannot be Galois covering of projective plane, hence does not have any Galois embedding.
A total mass is the weighted count of continuous homomorphisms from the absolute Galois group of a local field to a finite group. In the preceding paper, the authors observed that in a particular example, two total masses coming from two different weightings are dual to each other. We discuss the problem how general such a duality holds and relate it to the existence of simultaneous resolution of singularities, using the wild McKay correspondence and the Poincaré duality for stringy invariants. We also exhibit several examples.
We prove two "large images" results for the Galois representations attached to a degree $d$ Q-curve $E$ over a quadratic field $K$: if $K$ is arbitrary, we prove maximality of the image for every prime $p >13$ not dividing $d$, provided that $d$ is divisible by $q$ (but $d \neq q$) with $q=2$ or 3 or 5 or 7 or 13. If $K$ is real we prove maximality of the image for every odd prime $p$ not dividing $d D$, where $D = \disc(K)$, provided that $E$ is a semistable Q-curve. In both cases we make the (standard) assumptions that $E$ does not have potentially good reduction at all primes $p \nmid 6$ an…
For a map $φ: \varGamma \rightarrow \varGamma^{\prime}$ between metric graphs and an isometric action on $\varGamma$ by finite group $K$, $φ$ is a $K$-Galois covering on $\varGamma^{\prime}$ if $φ$ is a morphism, the degree of $φ$ coincides with the order of $K$ and $K$ induces a transitive action on every fibre. We prove that for a metric graph $\varGamma$ with an isometric action by finite group $K$, there exists a rational map, from $\varGamma$ to a tropical projective space, which induces a $K$-Galois covering on the image. By using this fact, we also prove that for a hyperelliptic metric …
For the Galois closure $\Xgal$ of a generic projection from a surface $X$, it is believed that $π_1(\Xgal)$ gives rise to new invariants of $X$. However, in all examples this group is surprisingly simple. In this article, we offer an explanation for this phenomenon: We compute a quotient of $π_1(\Xgal)$ that depends on $π_1(X)$ and data from the generic projection only. In all known examples except one, this quotient is in fact isomorphic to $π_1(\Xgal)$. As a byproduct, we simplify part of the computations of Moishezon, Teicher and others.
For each prime power $\ell$ the plane curve $\mathcal X_\ell$ with equation $Y^{\ell^2-\ell+1}=X^{\ell^2}-X$ is maximal over $\mathbb{F}_{\ell^6}$. Garcia and Stichtenoth in 2006 proved that $\mathcal X_3$ is not Galois covered by the Hermitian curve and raised the same question for $\mathcal X_\ell$ with $\ell>3$; in this paper we show that $\mathcal X_\ell$ is not Galois covered by the Hermitian curve for any $\ell>3$. Analogously, Duursma and Mak proved that the generalized GK curve $\mathcal C_{\ell^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{\ell^{2n}}$ is not a quotient of the Hermitian curve for $\ell>2$ and…
We construct and study two series of curves whose Jacobians admit complex multiplication. The curves arise as quotients of Galois coverings of the projective line with Galois group metacyclic groups $G_{q,3}$ of order $3q$ with $q \equiv 1 \mod 3$ an odd prime, and $G_m$ of order $2^{m+1}$. The complex multiplications arise as quotients of double coset algebras of the Galois groups of these coverings. We work out the CM-types and show that the Jacobians are simple abelian varieties.
If $X'= ({\mathbb B} / Γ)'$ is a torsion free toroidal compactification of a discrete ball quotient $X_o={\mathbb B} / Γ$ and $ξ: (X', T = X'\setminus X_o) \rightarrow (X, D = ξ(T))$ is the blow-down of the $(-1)$-curves to the corresponding minimal model, then $G'= Aut (X',T)$ coincides with the finite group $G=Aut(X,D)$. In particular, for an elliptic curve $E$ with endomorphism ring $R = End(E)$ and a split abelian surface $X = A = E \times E$, $G$ is a finite subgroup of $Aut(A) = \mathcal{T}_A \leftthreetimes GL(2,R)$, where $(\mathcal{T}_A,+) \simeq (A,+)$ is the translation group of $A$…
We study rational points on a smooth variety X over a complete local field K with algebraically closed residue field, and models of X with tame quotient singularities. If a model of X is the quotient of a Galois action on a weak Néron model of the base change of X to a tame Galois extension of K, then we construct a canonical weak Néron model of X with a map to this model, and examine its special fiber. As an application we get examples of singular models of X such that X has K-rational points specializing to a singular point of this model. Moreover we obtain formulas for the motivic Serre inv…
The aim of this paper is to construct "special" isogenies between K3 surfaces, which are not Galois covers between K3 surfaces, but are obtained by composing cyclic Galois covers, induced by quotients by symplectic automorphisms. We determine the families of K3 surfaces for which this construction is possible. To this purpose we will prove that there are infinitely many big families of K3 surfaces which both admit a finite symplectic automorphism and are (desingularizations of) quotients of other K3 surfaces by a symplectic automorphism. In the case of involutions, for any $n\in\mathbb{N}_{>0}…
We investigate a certain class of (geometric) finite (Galois) coverings of formal fibres of $p$-adic curves and the corresponding quotient of the (geometric) étale fundamental group. A key result in our investigation is that these (Galois) coverings can be compactified to finite (Galois) coverings of proper $p$-adic curves. We also prove that the maximal prime-to-$p$ quotient of the geometric étale fundamental group of a (geometrically connected) formal fibre of a $p$-adic curve is (pro-)prime-to-$p$ free of finite computable rank.
Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $k$ be an arbitrary field of characteristic not $p$. In this article we determine the obstructions for the realizability as Galois groups over $k$ of all groups of orders $p^5$ and $p^6$, that have an abelian quotient obtained by factoring out central subgroups of order $p$ or $p^2$. These obstructions are decomposed as products of $p$-cyclic algebras, provided that $k$ contains certain roots of unity.
We study Shimura (special) subvarieties in the moduli space $A_{p,D}$ of complex abelian varieties of dimension $p$ and polarization type $D$. These subvarieties arise from families of covers compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve such that the quotient of the base curve by the group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1$. We give a criterion for the image of these families under the Prym map to be a special subvariety and, using computer algebra, obtain 210 Shimura subvarieties contained in the Prym locus.
A semicommutative finite group scheme is a finite group scheme which can be obtained from commutative finite group schemes by iterated performing semidirect products with commutative kernels and taking quotients by normal subgroups. In this article, for an étale tame semicommutative finite group scheme $G$, we give a lower bound on the number of connected $G$-torsors of bounded height (such as discriminant).
Let $ϕ:\,X\rightarrow Y$ be a (possibly ramified) cover between two algebraic curves of positive genus. We develop tools that may identify the Prym variety of $ϕ$, up to isogeny, as the Jacobian of a quotient curve $C$ in the Galois closure of the composition of $ϕ$ with a well-chosen map $Y\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$. This method allows us to recover all previously obtained descriptions of a Prym variety in terms of a Jacobian that are known to us, besides yielding new applications. We also find algebraic equations for some of these new cases, including one where $X$ has genus $3$, $Y$ has genu…
Let $K/\mathbb{Q}$ be a finitely generated field of characteristic zero and $X/K$ a smooth projective variety. Fix $q\in\mathbb{N}$. For every prime number $\ell$ let $ρ_\ell$ be the representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(K)$ on the étale cohomology group $H^q(X_{\overline{K}}, \mathbb{Q}_\ell)$. For a field $k$ we denote by $k_{\mathrm{ab}}$ its maximal abelian Galois extension. We prove that there exist finite Galois extensions $k/\mathbb{Q}$ and $F/K$ such that the restricted family of representations $(ρ_\ell|\mathrm{Gal}(k_{\mathrm{ab}} F))_\ell$ is group theoretically independent in the sense t…
The quotient space of a $K3$ surface by a finite group is an Enriques surface or a rational surface if it is smooth. Finite groups where the quotient space are Enriques surfaces are known. In this paper, by analyzing effective divisors on smooth rational surfaces, we will study finite groups which act faithfully on $K3$ surfaces such that the quotient space are smooth. In particular, we will completely determine effective divisors on Hirzebruch surfaces such that there is a finite Abelian cover from a $K3$ surface to a Hirzebrunch surface such that the branch divisor is that effective divisor.…
We define a class of surfaces corresponding to the ADE root lattices and construct compactifications of their moduli spaces as quotients of projective varieties for Coxeter fans, generalizing Losev-Manin spaces of curves. We exhibit modular families over these moduli spaces, which extend to families of stable pairs over the compactifications. One simple application is a geometric compactification of the moduli of rational elliptic surfaces that is a finite quotient of a projective toric variety.
In this paper, for any simple, simply connected algebraic group $G$ of type $B_n,C_n$ or $D_n$ and for any maximal parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$, we describe all minimal dimensional Schubert varieties in $G/P$ admitting semistable points for the action of a maximal torus $T$ with respect to an ample line bundle on $G/P$. In this paper, we also describe, for any semi-simple simply connected algebraic group $G$ and for any Borel subgroup $B$ of $G$, all Coxeter elements $τ$ for which the Schubert variety $X(τ)$ admits a semistable point for the action of the torus $T$ with respect to a non-trivi…
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group and let $Z$ be the stabilizer of a nilpotent element $e$ of the Lie algebra of $G$. We consider the action of $Z$ on the flag variety of $G$, and we focus on the case where this action has a finite number of orbits (i.e., $Z$ is a spherical subgroup). This holds for instance if $e$ has height $2$. In this case we give a parametrization of the $Z$-orbits and we show that each $Z$-orbit has a structure of algebraic affine bundle. In particular, in type $A$, we deduce that each orbit has a natural cell decomposition. In the aim to study the (strong) Bruhat o…
