We assume a vector bundle $p: E\to M$ with a general linear connection $K$ and a classical linear connection $\Lam$ on $M$. We prove that all classical linear connections on the total space $E$ naturally given by $(\Lam, K)$ form a 15-parameter family. Further we prove that all connections on $J^1 E$ naturally given by $(\Lam, K)$ form a 14-parameter family. Both families of connections are described geometrically.
A natural connection, determined by a property of its torsion tensor, is defined and it is called the second natural connection on Riemannian $Π$-manifold, i.e. the uniqueness of this connection is proved and a necessary and sufficient condition for coincidence with the first natural connection on the considered manifolds is found. The form of the torsion tensor of the second natural connection is obtained in the classes of the Riemannian $Π$-manifolds in which it differs from the first natural connection. An explicit example of dimension 5 is given in support of the proven assertions.
A natural connection with torsion is defined and it is called the first natural connection on Riemannian $Π$-manifold. Relations between the introduced connection and the Levi-Civita connection are obtained, as well as relations between their respective curvature tensors, torsion tensors, Ricci tensors, and scalar curvatures in the main classes of a classification of Riemannian $Π$-manifolds are presented. An explicit example of dimension 5 is provided.
A Riemannian almost product manifold with integrable almost product structure is called a Riemannian product manifold. In the present paper the natural connections on such manifolds are studied, i.e. the linear connections preserving the almost product structure and the Riemannian metric.
Some invariant tensors in two Naveira classes of Riemannian product manifolds are considered. These tensors are related with natural connections, i.e. linear connections preserving the Riemannian metric and the product structure.
We generalize reduction theorems for classical connections to operators with values in $k$-th order natural bundles. Using the first reduction theorem in order two we classify all (0,2)-tensor fields on the cotangent bundle of a manifold with a linear (non-symmetric) connection.
Almost contact manifolds with B-metric are considered. There are studied three natural connections (i.e. linear connections preserving the structure tensors) determined by conditions for their torsions. These connections are investigated on a family of Lie groups considered as 5-dimensional almost contact B-metric manifolds.
A natural connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion on almost contact manifolds with B-metric is constructed. The class of these manifolds, where the considered connection exists, is determined. Some curvature properties for this connection, when the corresponding curvature tensor has the properties of the curvature tensor for the Levi-Civita connection and the torsion tensor is parallel, are obtained.
We build an analogue for the Levi-Civita connection on Riemannian manifolds for sub-Riemannian manfiolds modeled on the Heisenberg group. We demonstrate some geometric properties of this connection to justify our choice and show that this connection is unique in having these properties.
Almost contact manifolds with B-metric are considered. A special linear connection is introduced, which preserves the almost contact B-metric structure on these manifolds. This connection is investigated on some classes of the considered manifolds.
On a main class of the almost contact manifolds with B-metric, it is described the family of the linear connections preserving the manifold's structures by 4 parameters. In this family there are determined the canonical-type connection and the connection with zero parameters.
The class W_1 of conformal Riemannian P-manifolds is the largest class of Riemannian almost product manifolds, which is closed with respect to the group of the conformal transformations of the Riemannian metric. This class is an analogue of the class of conformal Kaehler manifolds in almost Hermitian geometry. In the present work we study the natural connections on the manifolds (M, P, g) from the class W_1, i.e. the linear connections preserving the almost product structure P and the Riemannian metric g. We find necessary and sufficient conditions the curvature tensor of such a connection to …
We extend the result in J. Reine Angew. Math. 664, 29-53, to the non-compact case. Namely, we prove that the canonical connection on a simply connected and irreducible naturally reductive space is unique, provided the space is not a sphere, a compact Lie group with a bi-invariant metric or its symmetric dual. In particular, the canonical connection is unique for the hyperbolic space when the dimension is different from three. We also prove that the canonical connection on the sphere is unique for the symmetric presentation. Finally, we compute the full isometry group (connected component) of a…
In this paper, we analyse the question of existence of a natural and projectively equivariant symbol calculus, using the theory of projective Cartan connections. We establish a close relationship between the existence of such a natural symbol calculus and the existence of an \sl(m+1,\R)-equivariant calculus over \R^{m} in the sense of [15,1]. Moreover we show that the formulae that hold in the non-critical situations over \R^{m} for the \sl(m+1,\R)-equivariant calculus can be directly generalized to an arbitrary manifold by simply replacing the partial derivatives by invariant differentiations…
The existence of a natural and projectively equivariant quantization in the sense of Lecomte [20] was proved recently by M. Bordemann [4], using the framework of Thomas-Whitehead connections. We give a new proof of existence using the notion of Cartan projective connections and we obtain an explicit formula in terms of these connections. Our method yields the existence of a projectively equivariant quantization if and only if an \sl(m+1,\R)-equivariant quantization exists in the flat situation in the sense of [18], thus solving one of the problems left open by M. Bordemann.
Let $FM,\mathcal{M}_M$ be the bundles of linear frames and Riemannian metrics of a manifold $M$, respectively. The existence of a unique $\mathrm{Diff}M$-invariant connection form on $J^1\mathcal{M}_M\times_MFM\to J^1\mathcal{M}_M$, which is Riemannian with respect to the universal metric on $J^1\mathcal{M}_M\times_MTM$, is proved. Aplications to the construction of universal Pontryagin and Euler forms, are given.
In this paper, we explain how generalized dynamical r-matrices can be obtained by (quasi-)Poisson reduction. New examples of Poisson structures and Poisson groupoid actions naturally appear in this setting. As an application, we use a generalized dynamical r-matrix induced by the gauge fixing procedure to give a new finite dimensional description of the Atiyah-Bott symplectic structure on the moduli space of flat connections on a surface.
The reduction theorems for general linear and classical connections are generalized for operators with values in higher order gauge-natural bundles. We prove that natural operators depending on the $s_1$-jets of classical connections, on the $s_2$-jets of general linear connections and on the $r$-jets of tensor fields with values in gauge-natural bundles of order $k\ge 1$, $s_1+2\ge s_2$, $s_1,s_2\ge r-1\ge k-2$, can be factorized through the $(k-2)$-jets of both connections, the $(k-1)$-jets of the tensor fields and sufficiently high covariant differentials of the curvature tensors and the te…
A Riemannian manifold M with an integrable almost product structure P is called a Riemannian product manifold. Our investigations are on the manifolds (M; P; g) of the largest class of Riemannian product manifolds, which is closed with respect to the group of conformal transformations of the metric g. This class is an analogue of the class of locally conformal Kahler manifolds in almost Hermitian geometry. In the present paper we study a natural connection D on (M; P; g) (i.e. DP = Dg = 0). We find necessary and suffcient conditions the curvature tensor of D to have properties similar to the …
It is considered a differentiable manifold equipped with a pseudo-Riemannian metric and an almost contact 3-struc\-ture so that an almost contact metric structure and two almost contact B-metric structures are generated. There are introduced the so-called associated Nijenhuis tensors for the studied structures. It is given a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of these tensors as a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of linear connections with totally skew-symmetric torsions preserving the structure. An example of a 7-dimensional manifold with connections of the consider…
In a fibre bundle, natural derivatives of a section are defined as tangent vector fields on the image of a section of the fibre bundle. A local extension to vector fields in the tangent bundle leads to a direct proof of the formula expressing the curvature of a connection in terms of covariant derivatives. The result is based on a tensoriality argument and extends to nonlinear connections on fibre bundles a well-known formula for linear connections on vector bundles.
We construct several natural connections and Dirac type operators on a general metric contact manifold which are more sensitive to the geometric background. In the special case of CR manifolds these connections are also compatible with the CR structure and include among them the Webster connection. We also describe several Weitzenbock type formulae. Our method is based on work of P. Gauduchon applied to two almost complex manifolds naturally associated to a given metric contact manifold.
The paper is devoted to metric connections with parallel skew-symmetric torsion in Lorentzian signature. This is motivated by recent progress in the Riemannian signature and by possible applications to supergravity theories. We provide a complete information about holonomy algebras, torsion and curvature of the considered connections up to the corresponding objects from the Riemannian signature. Various examples are constructed. It is shown how to construct all simply connected Lorentzian naturally reductive homogeneous spaces of arbitrary dimension from Riemannian naturally reductive homogene…
Partial connections are (singular) differential systems generalizing classical connections on principal bundles, yielding analogous decompositions for manifolds with nonfree group actions. Connection forms are interpreted as maps determining projections of the tangent bundle onto the partial connection; this approach eliminates many of the complications arising from the presence of isotropy. A connection form taking values in the dual of the Lie algebra is smooth even at singular points of the action, while analogs of the classical algebra-valued connection form are necessarily discontinuous a…
In [8], P. Lecomte conjectured the existence of a natural and projectively equivariant quantization. In [1], M. Bordemann proved this existence using the framework of Thomas-Whitehead connections. In [9], we gave a new proof of the same theorem thanks to the Cartan connections. After these works there was no explicit formula for the quantization. In this paper, we give this formula using the formula in terms of Cartan connections given in [9]. This explicit formula constitutes the generalization to any order of the formulae at second and third orders soon published by Bouarroudj in [2] and [3]…
We give a combinatorial/geometric argument of the classical result that an affine connection, which is both torsion free and curvature free, is locally an affine space.
Given a semi-Hamiltonian system, we construct an $F$-manifold with a connection satisfying a suitable compatibility condition with the product. We exemplify this procedure in the case of the so-called $ε$-system. The corresponding connection turns out to be flat, and the flat coordinates give rise to additional chains of commuting flows
In this note, we describe the geometry of the quaternionic Heisenberg groups from a Riemannian viewpoint. We show, in all dimensions, that they carry an almost $3$-contact metric structure which allows us to define the metric connection that equips these groups with the structure of a naturally reductive homogeneous space. It turns out that this connection, which we shall call the canonical connection because of its analogy to the $3$-Sasaki case, preserves the horizontal and vertical distributions and even the quaternionic contact structure of the quaternionic Heisenberg groups. We focus on t…
The moduli space of jets of certain G-structures (basically those which admit a canonical linear connection) is shown to be isomorphic to the quotient of a natural G-module by G.
The holonomy of the Bismut connection on Vaisman manifolds is studied. We prove that if $M^{2n}$ is endowed with a Vaisman structure, then the holonomy group of the Bismut connection is contained in U$(n-1)$. We compute explicitly this group for particular types of manifolds, namely, solvmanifolds and some classical Hopf manifolds.
In the jet-bundle description of first-order classical field theories there are some elements, such as the lagrangian energy and the construction of the hamiltonian formalism, which require the prior choice of a connection. Bearing these facts in mind, we analyze the situation in the jet-bundle description of time-dependent classical mechanics. So we prove that this connection-dependence also occurs in this case, although it is usually hidden by the use of the ``natural'' connection given by the trivial bundle structure of the phase spaces in consideration. However, we also prove that this dep…
We investigate the concept of projective equivalence of connections in supergeometry. To this aim, we propose a definition for (super) geodesics on a supermanifold in which, as in the classical case, they are the projections of the integral curves of a vector field on the tangent bundle: the geodesic vector field associated with the connection. Our (super) geodesics possess the same properties as the in the classical case: there exists a unique (super) geodesic satisfying a given initial condition and when the connection is metric, our supergeodesics coincide with the trajectories of a free pa…
Given a compact Lie group $G$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we consider its tangent Lie group $TG\cong G\ltimes_{\mathrm{Ad}} \mathfrak{g}$. In this short note, we prove that $TG$ admits a left-invariant naturally reductive Riemannian metric $g$ and a metric connection with skew torsion $\nabla$ such that $(TG,g,\nabla)$ is naturally reductive. An alternative spinorial description of the same connection on the direct product $G\times \mathfrak{g}$ generalizes in a rather subtle way to $TS^7$, which is in many senses almost a tangent Lie group.
On the slit tangent manifold $TM^0$ of a Finsler space $(M,F)$ there are given some natural foliations as vertical foliation and some other fundamental foliations produced by the vertical and horizontal Liouville vector fields, see [A. Bejancu, H. R. Farran, Finsler Geometry and Natural Foliations on the Tangent Bundle, Rep. Math. Physics 58, No. 1 (2006), 131-146]. In this paper we consider a $(n,2n-1)$-codimensional subfoliation $(\mathcal{F}_V,\mathcal{F}_Γ)$ on $TM^0$ given by vertical foliation $\mathcal{F}_V$ and the line foliation spanned by vertical Liouville vector field $Γ$ and we gi…
Given an almost complex manifold (M, J), we study complex connections with trivial holonomy and such that the corresponding torsion is either of type (2,0) or of type (1,1) with respect to J. Such connections arise naturally when considering Lie groups, and quotients by discrete subgroups, equipped with bi-invariant and abelian complex structures.
We introduce and study the notion of Sasaki--Weyl manifold, which is a natural generalization of the notion of Sasaki manifold. We construct a reduction of Sasaki--Weyl manifolds and we show that it commutes with several reductions already existing in the literature.
Projective connections arise from equivalence classes of affine connections under the reparametrization of geodesics. They may also be viewed as quotient systems of the classical geodesic equation. After studying the link between integrals of the (classical) geodesic flow and its associated projective connection, we turn our attention to 2-dimensional metrics that admit one projective vector field, i.e. whose local flow sends unparametrized geodesics into unparametrized geodesics. We review and discuss the classification of these metrics, introducing special coordinates on the linear space of …
For a complex flat vector bundle over a fibered manifold, we consider the 1-parameter family of certain deformed sub-signature operators introduced by Ma-Zhang. We compute the adiabatic limit of the Bismut-Freed connection associated to this family and show that the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion form shows up naturally under this procedure.
On a Riemannian almost product manifold $(M,P,g)$ we consider a linear connection preserving the almost product structure $P$ and the Riemannian metric $g$ and having a totally skew-symmetric torsion. We determine the class of the manifolds $(M,P,g)$ admitting such a connection and prove that this connection is unique in terms of the covariant derivative of $P$ with respect to the Levi-Civita connection. We find a necessary and sufficient condition the curvature tensor of the considered connection to have similar properties like the ones of the Kähler tensor in Hermitian geometry. We pay atten…
In this paper, we identify the Bott connection on the natural foliation of the projective sphere bundle of a Finsler manifold to the Chern connection of this manifold. As a consequence, the symmetrization of the Bott connection turns out to be the Cartan connection of the Finsler manifold. Following Liu-Zhang \cite{LiuZ}, the Cartan connection can also be obtained through an adiabatic limit process. Furthermore, a Chern-Simons type form is defined and its conformal properties are discussed.
In the present paper, the $(HM',S,T)$-Cartan connections on pseudo-Finsler manifolds, introduced by A. Bejancu and H.R. Farran, are obtained by the natural almost complex structure arising from the nonlinear connection $HM'$. We prove that the natural almost complex linear connection associated to a $(HM',S,T)$-Cartan connection is a metric linear connection with respect to the Sasaki metric $G$. Finally we give some conditions for $(M', J, G)$ to be a Kähler manifold.
Given a reductive homogeneous space M=G/H endowed with a naturally reductive metric, we study the one-parameter family of connections joining the canonical and the Levi-Civita connection (t=0, 1/2). We show that the Dirac operator D^t corresponding to t=1/3 is the so-called ``cubic'' Dirac operator recently introduced by B. Kostant, and derive the formula for its square for any t, thus generalizing the classical Parthasarathy formula on symmetric spaces. Applications include the existence of a new G-invariant first order differential operator on spinors and an eigenvalue estimate for the first…
We construct an infinite-dimensional information manifold based on exponential Orlicz spaces without using the notion of exponential convergence. We then show that convex mixtures of probability densities lie on the same connected component of this manifold, and characterize the class of densities for which this mixture can be extended to an open segment containing the extreme points. For this class, we define an infinite-dimensional analogue of the mixture parallel transport and prove that it is dual to the exponential parallel transport with respect to the Fisher information. We also define …
In this paper, we prove a local index theorem for the DeRham Hodge-laplacian which is defined by the connection compatible with metric. This connection need not be the Levi-Civita connection. When the connection is Levi-Civita connection, this is the classical local Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem.
In this paper, I will show that, if a Lie algebra $\G$ acts on a manifold $P$, any solution of the classical Yang-Baxter equation on $\G$ gives arise to a Poisson tensor on $P$ and a torsion-free and flat contravariant connection (with respect to the Poisson tensor). Moreover, if the action is locally free, the matacurvature of the above contravariant connection vanishes. This will permit to get a large class of manifolds which satisfy the necessary conditions, presented by Hawkins in math.QA/0504232, to the existence of a noncommutative deformation.
In this paper we construct some natural geometrical objects on the 1-jet space J^1(R,R^3), like a nonlinear connection, a Cartan linear connection (together with its d-torsions and d-curvatures), a jet "electromagnetic" d-field and its geometric "electromagnetic" Yang-Mills energy, starting from a given dynamical system governing the three-dimensional motion of the knee in the mathematical model introduced by Grood and Suntay. The corresponding Yang-Mills energetic surfaces of constant level (produced by this knee dynamical system) are studied.
A linear connection is associated to a nonlinear connection on a vector bundle by a linearization procedure. Our definition is intrinsic in terms of vector fields on the bundle. For a connection on an affine bundle our procedure can be applied after homogenization and restriction. Several applications in Classical Mechanics are provided.
Graded bundles are a particularly nice class of graded manifolds and represent a natural generalisation of vector bundles. By exploiting the formalism of supermanifolds to describe Lie algebroids we define the notion of a weighted $A$-connection on a graded bundle. In a natural sense weighted $A$-connections are adapted to the basic geometric structure of a graded bundle in the same way as linear $A$-connections are adapted to the structure of a vector bundle. This notion generalises directly to multi-graded bundles and in particular we present the notion of a bi-weighted $A$-connection on a d…
We study the existence of a natural `linearisation' process for generalised connections on an affine bundle. It is shown that this leads to an affine generalised connection over a prolonged bundle, which is the analogue of what is called a connection of Berwald type in the standard theory of connections. Various new insights are being obtained in the fine structure of affine bundles over an anchored vector bundle and affineness of generalised connections on such bundles.
This paper is concerned with basic geometric properties of the phase space of a classical general relativistic particle, regarded as the 1st jet space of motions, i.e. as the 1st jet space of timelike 1--dimensional submanifolds of spacetime. This setting allows us to skip constraints. Our main goal is to determine the geometric conditions by which the Lorentz metric and a connection of the phase space yield contact and Jacobi structures. In particular, we specialise these conditions to the cases when the connection of the phase space is generated by the metric and an additional tensor. Indeed…
