We construct several natural connections and Dirac type operators on a general metric contact manifold which are more sensitive to the geometric background. In the special case of CR manifolds these connections are also compatible with the CR structure and include among them the Webster connection. We also describe several Weitzenbock type formulae. Our method is based on work of P. Gauduchon applied to two almost complex manifolds naturally associated to a given metric contact manifold.
Given an open book decomposition $(Σ,τ)$ of a three manifold $Y$, Thurston and Winkelnkemper [TW] construct a specific contact form $a$ on $Y$. Given a spin-c Dirac operator $D$ on $Y$, the contact form naturally associates a one parameter family of Dirac operators $D_r = D - \frac{ir}{2}\cl(a)$ for $r\geq0$. When $r>>1$, we prove that the spectrum of $D_r = D_0 - \frac{ir}{2}\cl(a)$ within $[-(r^{1/2})/2, (r^{1/2})/2]$ are almost uniformly distributed. With the result in Part I, it implies that the subleading order term of the spectral flow from $D_0$ to $D_r$ is of order $r (\log r)^{\frac{9…
There are introduced and studied a pair of associated Schouten-van Kampen affine connections adapted to the contact distribution and an almost contact B-metric structure generated by the pair of associated B-metrics and their Levi-Civita connections. By means of the constructed non-symmetric connections, the basic classes of almost contact B-metric manifolds are characterized. Curvature properties of the considered connections are obtained.
We study the Schouten-van Kampen connection associated to an almost contact or paracontact metric structure. With the help of such a connection, some classes of almost (para) contact metric manifolds are characterized. Certain curvature properties of this connection are found.
We construct a canonically defined affine connection in sub-Riemannian contact geometry. Our method mimics that of the Levi-Civita connection in Riemannian geometry. We compare it with the Tanaka-Webster connection in the three-dimensional case.
Almost contact manifolds with B-metric are considered. A special linear connection is introduced, which preserves the almost contact B-metric structure on these manifolds. This connection is investigated on some classes of the considered manifolds.
Families of linear connections are constructed on almost contact manifolds with Norden metric. An analogous connection to the symmetric Yano connection is obtained on a normal almost contact manifold with Norden metric and closed structural 1-form. The curvature properties of this connection are studied on two basic classes of normal almost contact manifolds with Norden metric.
Almost contact manifolds with B-metric are considered. There are studied three natural connections (i.e. linear connections preserving the structure tensors) determined by conditions for their torsions. These connections are investigated on a family of Lie groups considered as 5-dimensional almost contact B-metric manifolds.
In this paper, we write down Seiberg-Witten equations on contact metric manifolds of dimension 5. Any contact metric manifold has a spin^c structure. For Dirac equation we use Dirac type operators associated to the generalized Tanaka-Webster connection on spin^c spinor bundle of a contact metric manifold. For curvature equation we need to self-duality concept. Self-duality concept is significant on odd dimensional manifolds, particularly, on 5-dimensional contact manifolds. Finally, we give a global solution to these equations on strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds.
In this paper, we obtain Chen's inequalities for submanifolds in $(κ,μ)$-contact space form with two kinds of generalized semi-symmetric non-metric connections.
On a manifold with an almost contact metric structure $(φ,\vecξ,η,g,X,D)$ the notions of the interior and the $N$-prolonged connections are introduced. Using the $N$-prolonged connection, a new almost contact metric structure is defined on the distribution $D$. The properties of this structure are studied.
A dualistic structure on a smooth Riemaniann manifold $M$ is a triple $(M,g,\nabla)$ with $g$ a Riemaniann metric and $\nabla$ an affine connection, generally assumed to be torsionless. From $g$ and $\nabla$, the dual connection $\nabla^*$ can be defined and the triple $(M, \nabla,\nabla^*)$ is called a statistical manifold, a basic object in information geometry. In this work, we give conditions based on this notion for a manifold to admit an almost contact structure and some related structures: almost contact metric, contact, contact metric, cosymplectic, and coKähler in the three-dimensional…
On a main class of the almost contact manifolds with B-metric, it is described the family of the linear connections preserving the manifold's structures by 4 parameters. In this family there are determined the canonical-type connection and the connection with zero parameters.
We study 5-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that admit an almost contact metric structure. We classify these structures by their intrinsic torsion and review the literature in terms of this scheme. Moreover, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of metric connections with vectorial, totally skew-symmetric or traceless cyclic torsion that are compatible with the almost contact metric structure. Finally, we examine explicit examples of almost contact metric 5-manifolds from this perspective.
A natural connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion on almost contact manifolds with B-metric is constructed. The class of these manifolds, where the considered connection exists, is determined. Some curvature properties for this connection, when the corresponding curvature tensor has the properties of the curvature tensor for the Levi-Civita connection and the torsion tensor is parallel, are obtained.
A contact projective structure is a contact path geometry the paths of which are among the geodesics of some affine connection. In the manner of T.Y. Thomas there is associated to each contact projective structure an ambient affine connection on a symplectic manifold with one-dimensional fibers over the contact manifold and using this the local equivalence problem for contact projective structures is solved by the construction of a canonical regular Cartan connection. This Cartan connection is normal if and only if an invariant contact torsion vanishes. Every contact projective structure deter…
The canonical-type connection on the almost contact manifolds with B-metric is constructed. It is proved that its torsion is invariant with respect to a subgroup of the general conformal transformations of the almost contact B-metric structure. The basic classes of the considered manifolds are characterized in terms of the torsion of the canonical-type connection.
In this paper, we describe the space of adapted connections on a metric contact manifold through the space of their torsion tensors. The torsion tensor is an element of the space of TM-valued two-forms, which splits into various subspaces. We study the parts of the torsion tensor according to this splitting to completely describe the space of adapted connections. We use this description to obtain characterizations of the generalized Tanaka-Webster connection and to describe the Dirac operators of adapted connections.
We give simple characterizations of contact 1-forms in terms of Dirac structures. We also relate normal almost contact structures to the theory of Dirac structures.
We consider a pair of smooth manifolds, which are the counterparts in the even-dimensional and odd-dimensional cases. They are separately an almost complex manifold with Norden metric and an almost contact manifolds with B-metric, respectively. They can be combined as the so-called almost contact complex Riemannian manifold. This paper is a survey with additions of results on differential geometry of canonical-type connections (i.e. metric connections with torsion satisfying a certain algebraic identity) on the considered manifolds.
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the bi-Legendrian connection $\nabla$ associated to a bi-Legendrian structure $(\cal F,\cal G)$ on a contact metric manifold $(M,ϕ,ξ,η,g)$ being a metric connection and then we give conditions ensuring that $\nabla$ coincides with the (generalized) Tanaka-Webster connection of $(M,ϕ,ξ,η,g)$. Using these results, we give some interpretations of the Tanaka-Webster connection and we study the interactions between the Tanaka-Webster, the bi-Legendrian and the Levi Civita connection in a Sasakian manifold.
It is considered a differentiable manifold equipped with a pseudo-Riemannian metric and an almost contact 3-struc\-ture so that an almost contact metric structure and two almost contact B-metric structures are generated. There are introduced the so-called associated Nijenhuis tensors for the studied structures. It is given a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of these tensors as a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of linear connections with totally skew-symmetric torsions preserving the structure. An example of a 7-dimensional manifold with connections of the consider…
The notions of a twistor space of a contact manifold and a contact connection on such a manifold have been introduced by L. Vezzoni as extensions of the corresponding notions in the case of a symplectic manifold. Given a contact connection on a contact manifold one can define an almost $CR$-structure on its twistor space and Vezzoni has found the integrability condition for this structure. In the present paper it is observed that the $CR$-structure is induced by an almost contact metric structure. The main goal of the paper is to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for normality of this…
We construct exact solutions of the Einstein-Dirac equation, which couples the gravitational field with an eigenspinor of the Dirac operator via the energy-momentum tensor. For this purpose we introduce a new field equation generalizing the notion of Killing spinors. The solutions of this spinorial field equation are called weak Killing spinors (WK-spinors). They are special solutions of the Einstein-Dirac equation and in dimension n=3 the two equations essentially coincide. It turns out that any Sasakian manifold with Ricci tensor related in some special way to the metric tensor as well as to…
We introduce the notions of Chern-Dirac bundles and Chern-Dirac operators on Hermitian manifolds. They are analogues of classical Dirac bundles and Dirac operators, with Levi-Civita connection replaced by Chern connection. We then show that the tensor product of canonical and the anticanonical spinor bundles, called V-spinor bundle, is a bigraded Chern-Dirac bundle with spaces of harmonic spinors isomorphic to the full Dolbeault cohomology class. A similar construction establishes isomorphisms between other types of harmonic spinors and Bott-Chern, Aeppli and twisted cohomology.
The present paper deals with the study of pseudo parallel (in the sense of Chaki and in the sense of Deszcz) contact CR-submanifolds with respect to Levi-Civita connection as well as semisymmetric metric connection of Kenmotsu manifolds and prove that these corresponding two classes are equivalent with a certain condition.
Let $Y$ be a compact, oriented 3-manifold with a contact form $a$ and a metric $ds^2$. Suppose that $F\to Y$ is a principal bundle with structure group $U(2) = SU(2)\times_{\pm1}S^1$ such that $F/S^1$ is the principal SO(3) bundle of orthonormal frames for $TY$. A unitary connection $A_0$ on the Hermitian line bundle $F\times_{\det U(2)}\mathbb{C}$ determines a self-adjoint Dirac operator $D_0$ on the $\mathbb{C}^2$-bundle $F\times_{U(2)}\mathbb{C}^2$. The contact form $a$ can be used to perturb the connection $A_0$ by $A_0-ira$. This associates a one parameter family of Dirac operators $D_r$ …
Let Y be a compact, oriented 3-manifold with a contact form a. For any Dirac operator D, we study the asymptotic behavior of the spectral flow between D and D+cl(-ira) as r very large. If a is the Thurston-Winkelnkemper contact form whose monodromy is the product of Dehn twists along disjoint circles, we prove that the next order term of the spectral flow function is of order r.
Suppose that $(M,E)$ is a compact contact manifold, and that a compact Lie group $G$ acts on $M$ transverse to the contact distribution $E$. In an earlier paper, we defined a $G$-transversally elliptic Dirac operator $\dirac$, constructed using a Hermitian metric $h$ and connection $\nabla$ on the symplectic vector bundle $E\rightarrow M$, whose equivariant index is well-defined as a generalized function on $G$, and gave a formula for its index. By analogy with the geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded Hilbert space $Q(M)=\ker \dirac \oplus \ker \dirac^{*}$ …
The space of the torsion (0,3)-tensors of the linear connections on almost contact manifolds with B-metric is decomposed in 15 orthogonal and invariant subspaces with respect to the action of the structure group. Three known connections, preserving the structure, are characterized regarding this classification.
We consider Courant and Courant-Jacobi brackets on the stable tangent bundle $TM\times\mathds{R}^h$ of a differentiable manifold and corresponding Dirac, Dirac-Jacobi and generalized complex structures. We prove that Dirac and Dirac-Jacobi structures on $TM\times\mathds{R}^h$ can be prolonged to $TM\times\mathds{R}^k$, $k>h$, by means of commuting infinitesimal automorphisms. Some of the stable, generalized, complex structures are a natural generalization of the normal, almost contact structures; they are expressible by a system of tensors $(P,θ,F,Z_a,ξ^a)$ $(a=1,...,h)$, where $P$ is a bivect…
We apply the theory of Weyl structures for parabolic geometries developed by A. Cap and J. Slovak in to compute, for a quaternionic contact (qc) structure, the Weyl connection associated to a choice of scale, i.e. to a choice of Carnot-Carathéodory metric in the conformal class. The result of this computation has applications to the study of the conformal Fefferman space of a qc manifold. In addition to this application, we are also able to easily compute a tensorial formula for the qc analog of the Weyl curvature tensor in conformal geometry and the Chern-Moser tensor in CR geometry. This ten…
We shall give a twisted Dirac structure on the space of irreducible connections on a SU(n)-bundle over a three-manifold, and give a family of twisted Dirac structures on the space of irreducible connections on the trivial SU(n)-bundle over a four-manifold. The twist is described by the Cartan 3-form on the space of connections. It vanishes over the subspace of flat connections. So the spaces of flat connections are endowed with ( non-twisted ) Dirac structures. The Dirac structure on the space of flat connections over the three-manifold is obtained as the boundary restriction of a correspondin…
It is known that the bundle of Dirac spinors is produced as a direct sum of two bundles - the bundle of chiral spinors and its Hermitian conjugate bundle. In this paper some aspects of metric connections for chiral and Dirac spinors are resumed and their relation is studied.
We introduce a canonical affine connection on the contact manifold $(Q,ξ)$, which is associated to each contact triad $(Q,λ,J)$ where $λ$ is a contact form and $J:ξ\to ξ$ is an endomorphism with $J^2 = -id$ compatible to $dλ$. We call it the \emph{contact triad connection} of $(Q,λ,J)$ and prove its existence and uniqueness. The connection is canonical in that the pull-back connection $ϕ^*\nabla$ of a triad connection $\nabla$ becomes the triad connection of the pull-back triad $(Q, ϕ^*λ, ϕ^*J)$ for any diffeomorphism $ϕ:Q \to Q$ satisfying $ϕ^*λ= λ$ (sometimes called a strict contact diffeomo…
For a manifold $M$ endowed with a Legendrean (or Lagrangean) contact structure $E\oplus F \subset TM$, we give an elementary construction of an invariant partial connection on the quotient bundle $TM/F$. This permits us to develop a naïve version of relative tractor calculus and to construct a second order invariant differential operator, which turns out to be the first relative BGG operator induced by the partial connection.
On 5-dimensional almost contact B-metric manifolds, the form of any Kähler-type tensor (i.e. a tensor satisfying the properties of the curvature tensor of the Levi-Civita connection in the special class of the parallel structures on the manifold) is determined. The associated 1-forms are derived by the scalar curvatures of the Kähler-type tensor for the canonical connection on the manifolds from the main classes with closed 1-forms.
We give sufficient conditions for the existence of a Dirac structure on the total space of a Poisson fiber bundle endowed with a compatible connection. We also show that Cartan and Cartan-Hannay-Berry connections give rise to coupling Dirac structures.
Given an elliptic action of a compact Lie group $G$ on a co-oriented contact manifold $(M,E)$ one obtains two naturally associated objects: A $G$-transversally elliptic operator $\dirac$, and an equivariant differential form with generalised coefficients $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ defined in terms of a choice of contact form on $M$. We explain how the form $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ is natural with respect to the contact structure, and give a formula for the equivariant index of $\dirac$ involving $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$. A key tool is the Chern character with compact support developed by Paradan-Vergne \cite{PV1,…
Two explicit formulas for metric connections in the bundle of Dirac spinors are studied. Their equivalence is proved. The explicit formula relating the spinor curvature tensor with the Riemann curvature tensor is rederived.
For almost contact metric or almost paracontact metric manifolds there is natural notion of $η$-normality. Manifold is called $η$-normal if is normal along kernel distribution of characteristic form. In the paper it is proved that $η$-normal manifolds are in one-one correspondence with Cauchy-Riemann almost contact metric manifolds or para Cauchy-Riemann in case of almost paracontact metric manifolds. There is provided characterization of $η$-normal manifolds in terms of Levi-Civita covariant derivative of structure tensor. It is established existence a Tanaka-like connection on $η$-normal man…
The article considers some concrete solutions to the Dirac equation coupled to a vector bundle with connection, arising in the study of Yang-Mills equations and vector bundles on Riemann surfaces.
In this paper, the HyperKahler contact distribution of a 3-Sasakian manifold is studied. To analyze the curvature properties of this distribution, the special metric connection $\bar{\nabla}$ is defined. This metric connection is completely determined by HyperKahler contact distribution. We prove that HyperKahler contact distribution is of constant holomorphic sectional curvatures if and only if its 3-Sasakian manifold is of constant $φ_α$-sectional curvatures. Moreover, it is shown that there is an interesting relation between the sectional curvatures of $φ_α$-planes on $TM$ of metric connect…
A partial solution of the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the quaternionic sphere is given. It is shown that the torsion of the Biquard connection vanishes exactly when the trace-free part of the horizontal Ricci tensor of the Biquard connection is zero and this occurs precisely on 3-Sasakian manifolods. All conformal deformations sending the standard flat torsion-free quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group to a quaternionic contact structure with vanishing torsion of the Biquard connection are explicitly described. A '3-Hamiltonian form' of infinitesimal co…
In this paper, we establish two kinds of Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for Dirac operators and signature operators twisted by a vector bundle with a non-unitary connection on six-dimensional manifolds with boundary.
This is an expository paper which gives a proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators, presenting the theorem as a computation of the K-homology of a point. This paper and its follow up ("K-homology and index theory II: Elliptic Operators") was written to clear up basic points about index theory that are generally accepted as valid, but for which no proof has been published. Some of these points are needed for the solution of the Heisenberg-elliptic index problem in our paper "K-homology and index theory on contact manifolds" Acta. Math. 2014.
On a sub-Riemannian manifold, a connection with skew-symmetric torsion is defined as the unique connection from the class of $N$-connections that has this property. Two cases are considered separately: sub-Riemannian structure of even rank, and sub-Riemannian structure of odd rank. The resulting connection, called the canonical connection, is not a metric connection in the case when the sub-Riemannian structure is of even rank. The structure of an almost quasi-Sasakian manifold is defined as an almost contact metric structure of odd rank that satisfies additional requirements. Namely, it is re…
We classify locally homogeneous quasi-Sasakian manifolds in dimension five that admit a parallel spinor $ψ$ of algebraic type $F \cdot ψ= 0$ with respect to the unique connection $\nabla$ preserving the quasi-Sasakian structure and with totally skew-symmetric torsion. We introduce a certain conformal transformation of almost contact metric manifolds and discuss a link between them and the dilation function in 5-dimensional string theory. We find natural conditions implying conformal invariances of parallel spinors. We present topological obstructions to the existence of parallel spinors in the…
The main result is that the qc-scalar curvature of a seven dimensional quaternionic contact Einstein manifold is a constant. In addition, we characterize qc-Einstein structures with certain flat vertical connection and develop their local structure equations. Finally, regular qc-Ricci flat structures are shown to fibre over hyper-Kahler manifolds.
An expression is found for the $L^2$-index of a Dirac operator coupled to a connection on a $U_n$ vector bundle over $S^1\times{\mathbb R}^3$. Boundary conditions for the connection are given which ensure the coupled Dirac operator is Fredholm. Callias' index theorem is used to calculate the index when the connection is independent of the coordinate on $S^1$. An excision theorem due to Gromov, Lawson, and Anghel reduces the index theorem to this special case. The index formula can be expressed using the adiabatic limit of the $η$-invariant of a Dirac operator canonically associated to the boun…
Given a reductive homogeneous space M=G/H endowed with a naturally reductive metric, we study the one-parameter family of connections joining the canonical and the Levi-Civita connection (t=0, 1/2). We show that the Dirac operator D^t corresponding to t=1/3 is the so-called ``cubic'' Dirac operator recently introduced by B. Kostant, and derive the formula for its square for any t, thus generalizing the classical Parthasarathy formula on symmetric spaces. Applications include the existence of a new G-invariant first order differential operator on spinors and an eigenvalue estimate for the first…
Given a compact Riemannian spin manifold with positive scalar curvature, we find a family of connections $\nabla^{A_t}$ for $t\in[0,1]$ on a trivial vector bundle of sufficiently high rank, such that the first eigenvalue of the twisted Dirac operator $D_{A_t}$ is nonzero and becomes arbitrarily small as $t\to1$. However, if one restricts the class of twisting connections considered, then nonzero lower bounds do exist. We illustrate this fact by establishing a nonzero lower bound for the Dirac operator twisted by Hermitian-Einstein connections over Riemann surfaces.
On contact manifolds we describe a notion of (contact) finite-type for linear partial differential operators satisfying a natural condition on their leading terms. A large class of linear differential operators are of finite-type in this sense, and for any such operator we construct a partial connection on a (finite rank) vector bundle with the property that sections in the null space of the operator correspond bijectively, and via an explicit map, with sections parallel for the partial connection. It follows that the solution space is finite dimensional and bounded by the corank of the holono…
The coadjoint orbits of compact Lie groups carry many Kähler structures, which include a Riemannian metric and a complex structure. We provide a fairly explicit formula for the Levi-Civita connection of the Riemannian metric, and we use the complex structure to give a fairly explicit construction of a canonical Dirac operator for the Riemannian metric, in a way that avoids use of the Spin^c groups. Substantial parts of our results apply to compact almost-Hermitian homogeneous spaces, and to other connections besides the Levi-Civita connection. For these other connections we give a criterion th…
