The coadjoint orbits of compact Lie groups carry many Kähler structures, which include a Riemannian metric and a complex structure. We provide a fairly explicit formula for the Levi-Civita connection of the Riemannian metric, and we use the complex structure to give a fairly explicit construction of a canonical Dirac operator for the Riemannian metric, in a way that avoids use of the Spin^c groups. Substantial parts of our results apply to compact almost-Hermitian homogeneous spaces, and to other connections besides the Levi-Civita connection. For these other connections we give a criterion that is both necessary and sufficient for their Dirac operator to be formally self-adjoint.
We hope to use the detailed results given here to clarify statements in the literature of high-eneregy physics concerning "Dirac operators" for matrix algebras that converge to coadjoint orbits. To facilitate this we employ here only global methods -- we never use local coordinate charts, and we use the cross-section modules of vector bundles.
We study the geometrical structure of the coadjoint orbits of an arbitrary complex or real Lie algebra ${\mathfrak g}$ containing some ideal ${\mathfrak n}$. It is shown that any coadjoint orbit in ${\mathfrak g}^*$ is a bundle with the affine subspace of ${\mathfrak g}^*$ as its fibre. This fibre is an isotropic submanifold of the orbit and is defined only by the coadjoint representations of the Lie algebras ${\mathfrak g}$ and ${\mathfrak n}$ on the dual space ${\mathfrak n}^*$. The use of this fact and an application of methods of symplectic geometry give a new insight into the structure of…
We consider all connected and simply connected 7-dimensional Lie groups whose Lie algebras have nilradical $\g_{5,2} = \s \{X_1, X_2, X_3, X_4, X_5 \colon [X_1, X_2] = X_4, [X_1, X_3] = X_5\}$ of Dixmier. First, we give a geometric description of the maximal-dimensional orbits in the coadjoint representation of all considered Lie groups. Next, we prove that, for each considered group, the family of the generic coadjoint orbits forms a measurable foliation in the sense of Connes. Finally, the topological classification of all these foliations is also provided.
We apply the Guillemin-Lerman-Sternberg theorem to reprove a formula of Heckman for the Duistermaat-Heckman measure associated to the coadjoint action of $T$, a maximal torus of a compact semisimple Lie group $G$, on a regular coadjoint $G$-orbit in the dual space of the Lie algebra of $G$. This formula is, in an appropriate sense, a limiting case of the Kostant multiplicity formula.
A Poisson-Lie group acting by the coadjoint action on the dual of its Lie algebra induces on it a non-trivial class of quadratic Poisson structures extending the linear Poisson bracket on the coadjoint orbits.
In this paper, we consider exponential, connected and simply connected Lie groups which are corresponding to Lie algebras of dimension 7 such that the nilradical of them is 5-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_{5,2}$ in Table 1. In particular, we give a description of the geometry of the generic orbits in the coadjoint representation of some considered Lie groups. We prove that, for each considered group, the family of the generic coadjoint orbits forms a measurable foliation in the sense of Connes. The topological classification of these foliations is also provided.
We investigate some basic questions concerning the relationship between the restricted Grassmannian and the theory of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces. By using universal central extensions of Lie algebras, we find that the restricted Grassmannian is symplectomorphic to symplectic leaves in certain Banach Lie-Poisson spaces, and the underlying Banach space can be chosen to be even a Hilbert space. Smoothness of numerous adjoint and coadjoint orbits of the restricted unitary group is also established. Several pathological properties of the restricted algebra are pointed out.
For a Lie groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ with Lie algebroid $A$, we realize the symplectic leaves of the Lie-Poisson structure on $A^*$ as orbits of the affine coadjoint action of the Lie groupoid $\mathcal{J}\mathcal{G}\ltimes T^*M$ on $A^*$, which coincide with the groupoid orbits of the symplectic groupoid $T^*\mathcal{G}$ over $A^*$. It is also shown that there is a fiber bundle structure on each symplectic leaf. In the case of gauge groupoids, a symplectic leaf is the universal phase space for a classical particle in a Yang-Mills field.
Any free nilpotent Lie algebra is determined by its rank and step. We consider free nilpotent Lie algebras of steps 3, 4 and corresponding connected and simply connected Lie groups. We construct Casimir functions of such groups, i.e., invariants of the coadjoint representation. For free 3-step nilpotent Lie groups we get a full description of coadjoint orbits. It turns out that general coadjoint orbits are affine subspaces, and special coadjoint orbits are affine subspaces or direct products of nonsingular quadrics. The knowledge of Casimir functions is useful for investigation of integration …
For a complex Lie group $G$ with a real form $G_0\subset G$, we prove that any Hamiltionian automorphism $ϕ$ of a coadjoint orbit $\mathcal O_0$ of $G_0$ whose connected components are simply connected, may be approximated by holomorphic $\mathcal O_0$-invariant symplectic automorphism of the corresponding coadjoint orbit of $G$ in the sense of Carleman, provided that $\mathcal O$ is closed. In the course of the proof, we establish the Hamiltonian density property for closed coadjoint orbits of all complex Lie groups.
Let G_R be a Lie group acting on an oriented manifold M, and let $ω$ be an equivariantly closed form on M. If both G_R and M are compact, then the integral $\int_M ω$ is given by the fixed point integral localization formula (Theorem 7.11 in [BGV]). Unfortunately, this formula fails when the acting Lie group G_R is not compact: there simply may not be enough fixed points present. A proposed remedy is to modify the action of G_R in such a way that all fixed points are accounted for. Let G_R be a real semisimple Lie group, possibly noncompact. One of the most important examples of equivariantly …
Semisimple (co)adjoint orbits through real hyperbolic elements are well-known to be symplectomorphic to cotangent bundles. We provide a new proof of this fact based on elementary results on both Lie theory and symplectic geometry. Our proof establishes a new connection between the Iwasawa horospherical projection and the symplectic geometry of real hyperbolic (co)adjoint orbits.
This thesis studies the symplectic structure of holomorphic coadjoint orbits, and their projections. A holomorphic coadjoint orbit O is an elliptic coadjoint orbit which is endowed with a natural invariant Kählerian structure. These coadjoint orbits are defined for a real semi-simple connected non-compact Lie group G with finite center, such that G/K is a Hermitian symmetric space, where K is a maximal compact subgroup of G. Holomorphic coadjoint orbits are a generalization of the Hermitian symmetric space G/K. In this thesis, we prove that the McDuff's symplectomorphism on Hermitian symmetric…
We show that the leaves of an LA-groupoid which pass through the unit manifold are, modulo a connectedness issue, Lie groupoids. We illustrate this phenomenon by considering the cotangent Lie algebroids of Poisson groupoids thus obtaining an interesting class of symplectic groupoids coming from their symplectic foliations. In particular, we show that for a (strict) Lie 2-group the coadjoint orbits of the units in the dual of its Lie 2-algebra are symplectic groupoids, meaning that the classical Kostant-Kirillov-Souriau symplectic forms on these special coadjoint orbits are multiplicative.
This paper studies differential graded modules and representations up to homotopy of Lie $n$-algebroids, for general $n\in\mathbb{N}$. The adjoint and coadjoint modules are described, and the corresponding split versions of the adjoint and coadjoint representations up to homotopy are explained. In particular, the case of Lie 2-algebroids is analysed in detail. The compatibility of a Poisson bracket with the homological vector field of a Lie $n$-algebroid is shown to be equivalent to a morphism from the coadjoint module to the adjoint module, leading to an alternative characterisation of non-de…
The goal of this diploma thesis is to give a detailed description of Kirillov's Orbit Method for the case of compact connected Lie groups. The theory of Kirillov aims at finding all irreducible unitary representations of a given Lie group $G$. The first chapter is intended to recall some facts about Lie groups. The most important result is that for a functional $λ$ on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak t$ of a maximal torus in a compact connected Lie group the stabilizer is of the form $C(T_1)$ for a smaller torus $T_1$. This allows us to define a complex structure on the coadjoint orbit $\mathcal O_λ…
Let $G$ be a compact connected semisimple Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Let $\mathcal{O}\subset\mathfrak{g}^*$ be a coadjoint orbit. The action of $G$ on $\mathcal{O}$ induces a morphism $ρ:G\to \mathrm{Homeo}(\mathcal{O})$. We prove that the induced map $π_1(ρ):π_1(G)\toπ_1(\mathrm{Homeo}(\mathcal{O}))$ is injective. This strengthens a theorem of McDuff and Tolman (conjectured by Weinstein in 1989) according to which the analogous map $G\to\mathrm{Ham}(\mathcal{O})$ is injective on fundamental groups, where $\mathrm{Ham}(\mathcal{O})$ is the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms o…
We give an identification of the triple reduced product of three coadjoint orbits in SU(3) with a space of Hitchin pairs over a genus 0 curve with three punctures, where the residues of the Higgs field at the punctures are constrained to lie in fixed coadjoint orbits. Using spectral curves for the corresponding Hitchin system, we identify the moment map for a Hamiltonian circle action on the reduced product. Finally, we make use of results of Adams, Harnad, and Hurtubise to find Darboux coordinates and a differential equation for the Hamiltonian.
Do co-adjoint orbits of Lie groups support a Kähler structure? We study this question from a point of view derived from coherent states. We examine three examples of Lie groups: the Weyl-Heisenberg group, $\mathrm{SU(2)}$ and $\mathrm{SU(1,1)}$. In cases, where the orbits admit a Kähler structure, we show that coherent states give us a Kähler embedding of the orbit into projective Hilbert space. In contrast, squeezed states, (which like coherent states, also saturate the uncertainty bound) only give us a symplectic embedding. We also study geometric quantisation of the co-adjoint orbits of the…
We study the general geometrical structure of the coadjoint orbits of a semidirect product formed by a Lie group and a representation of this group on a vector space. The use of symplectic induction methods gives new insight into the structure of these orbits. In fact, each coadjoint orbit of such a group is obtained by symplectic induction on some coadjoint orbit of a "smaller" Lie group. We study also a special class of polarizations related to a semidirect product and the validity of Pukanszky's condition for these polarizations. Some examples of physical interest are discussed using the pr…
Given a holomorphic principal bundle $Q\, \longrightarrow\, X$, the universal space of holomorphic connections is a torsor $C_1(Q)$ for $\text{ad} Q \otimes T^*X$ such that the pullback of $Q$ to $C_1(Q)$ has a tautological holomorphic connection. When $X\,=\, G/P$, where $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of a complex simple group $G$, and $Q$ is the frame bundle of an ample line bundle, we show that $C_1(Q)$ may be identified with $G/L$, where $L\, \subset\, P$ is a Levi factor. We use this identification to construct the twistor space associated to a natural hyper-Kähler metric on $T^*(G/P)$, reco…
We present a geometric construction of central extensions of covering groups of the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms, integrating central extensions of the Lie algebra of divergence free vector fields defined by Lichnerowicz cocycles. Certain covering spaces of non-linear Grassmannians can be realized as prequantizable coadjoint orbits in these Lie group extensions.
We study the adjoint and coadjoint representations of a class of Lie group including the Euclidean group. Despite the fact that these representations are not in general isomorphic, we show that there is a geometrically defined bijection between the sets of adjoint and coadjoint orbits of such groups. In addition, we show that the corresponding orbits, although different, are homotopy equivalent. We also provide a geometric description of the adjoint and coadjoint orbits of the Euclidean and orthogonal groups as a special class of flag manifold which we call a Hermitian flag manifold. These man…
Let G be a Lie group, $T^*G$ its cotangent bundle with its natural Lie group structure obtained by performing a left trivialization of T^*G and endowing the resulting trivial bundle with the semi-direct product, using the coadjoint action of G on the dual space of its Lie algebra. We investigate the group of automorphisms of the Lie algebra of $T^*G$. More precisely, amongst other results, we fully characterize the space of all derivations of the Lie algebra of $T^*G$. As a byproduct, we also characterize some spaces of operators on G amongst which, the space J of bi-invariant tensors on G and…
We give a coadjoint orbit's diffeomorphic deformation between the classical semisimple case and the semi-direct product given by a Cartan decomposition. The two structures admit the Hermitian symplectic form defined in a semisimple complex Lie algebra. We provide some applications such as the constructions of Lagrangian submanifolds.
Recently V. Ginzburg proved that Calogero phase space is a coadjoint orbit for some infinite dimensional Lie algebra coming from noncommutative symplectic geometry. In this note we generalize this argument to specific quotient varieties of representations of (deformed) preprojective algebras. This result was also obtained independently by V. Ginzburg.
We study and classify Lie algebras, homogeneous spacetimes and coadjoint orbits ("particles") of Lie groups generated by spatial rotations, temporal and spatial translations and an additional scalar generator. As a first step we classify Lie algebras of this type in arbitrary dimension. Among them is the prototypical Lifshitz algebra, which motivates this work and the name "Lifshitz Lie algebras". We classify homogeneous spacetimes of Lifshitz Lie groups. Depending on the interpretation of the additional scalar generator, these spacetimes fall into three classes: (1) ($d+2$)-dimensional Lifshi…
This thesis studies the representation theory and linear structures of $\mathcal{Q}$-manifolds and higher Lie algebroids. We introduce differential graded modules (or for short DG-modules) of $\mathcal{Q}$-manifolds and the equivalent notion of representations up to homotopy in the case of Lie $n$-algebroids ($n\in\mathbb{N}$), as generalisations of the homonymous structures that exist already in the case of ordinary Lie algebroids. The adjoint and coadjoint modules are described, and the corresponding split versions of the adjoint and coadjoint representations up to homotopy of Lie $n$-algebr…
The Galilean group is the group of symmetries of Newtonian mechanics, with Lie a lgebra $\gal(n)$. We find algebraically independent generators for the center of the universal enveloping algebra of $\gal(n)$ using coadjoint orbits.
