In this paper, we obtain Chen's inequalities for submanifolds in $(κ,μ)$-contact space form with two kinds of generalized semi-symmetric non-metric connections.
In the present paper, we obtain the basic Chen inequalities for the statistical submanifolds of statistical cosymplectic manifolds. Also, we discuss the same inequalities for Legendrian submanifolds.
Recently Oprea gave an improved version of Chen's inequality for Lagrangian submanifolds of $\mathbb CP^n(4)$. For minimal submanifolds this inequality coincides with the original previously proved version. We consider here those non minimal 3-dimensional Lagrangian submanifolds in $\mathbb CP^3 (4)$ attaining at all points equality in the improved Chen inequality. We show how all such submanifolds may be obtained starting from a minimal Lagrangian surface in $\mathbb CP^2(4)$ and a suitable horizontal curve in $S^3(1)$.
In this paper, authors have established Chen's inequalities for the submanifolds of quaternionic Kaehler manifolds characterized by Ricci quarter-symmetric metric connection. Other than these inequalities, we have also derived generalized normalized Casorati curvature inequalities for the same submanifolds.
We study biharmonic hypersurfaces and biharmonic submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold. One of interesting problems in this direction is Chen's conjecture which says that any biharmonic submanifold in a Euclidean space is minimal. From the invariant equation for biharmonic submanifolds, we derive a fundamental identity involving the mean curvature vector field, and using this, we prove Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds in a Euclidean space. More generally, it is proved that any biharmonic submanifold in a space form of nonpositively sectional curvature is minimal. Furthermore we pro…
The generalized Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds asserts that any biharmonic submanifold of a non-positively curved manifold is minimal (see e.g., [CMO1], [MO], [BMO1], [BMO2], [BMO3], [Ba1], [Ba2], [Ou1], [Ou2], [IIU]). In this paper, we prove that this conjecture is false by constructing foliations of proper biharmonic hyperplanes in a 5-dimensional conformally flat space with negative sectional curvature. Many examples of proper biharmonic submanifolds of non-positively curved spaces are also given.
In this paper, we obtain a basic Chen's inequality for a C-totally real submanifold in a generalized $(κ,μ)$-contact space forms involving intrinsic invariants, namely the scalar curvature and the sectional curvatures of the submanifold on left hand side and the main extrinsic invariant, namely the squared mean curvature on the right hand side. Inequalities between the squared mean curvature and Ricci curvature and between the squared mean curvature and $k$-Ricci curvature are also obtained.
B.-Y. Chen famously conjectured that every submanifold of Euclidean space with harmonic mean curvature vector is minimal. In this note we establish a much more general statement for a large class of submanifolds satisfying a growth condition at infinity. We discuss in particular two popular competing natural interpretations of the conjecture when the Euclidean background space is replaced by an arbitrary Riemannian manifold. Introducing the notion of epsilon-superbiharmonic submanifolds, which contains each of the previous notions as special cases, we prove that epsilon-superbiharmonic submani…
In this paper, the first Chen inequality is proved for general warped product submanifolds in Riemannian space forms, this inequality involves intrinsic invariants ($δ$-invariant and sectional curvature) controlled by an extrinsic one (the mean curvature vector), which provides an answer for Problem 1. As a geometric application, this inequality is applied to derive a necessary condition for the immersed submanifold to be minimal in Riemannian space forms, which presents a partial answer for the well-known problem proposed by S.S. Chern, Problem 2. For further research directions, we address a…
We present Chen-Ricci inequality and improved Chen-Ricci inequality for curvature like tensors. Applying our improved Chen-Ricci inequality we study Lagrangian and Kaehlerian slant submanifolds of complex space forms and C-totally real submanifolds of Sasakian space forms.
In this note, we give a brief survey on some recent developments of biharmonic submanifolds. After reviewing some recent progress on Chen's biharmonic conjecture, the Generalized Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds of non-positively curved manifolds, and some classifications of biharmonic submanifolds of spheres, we give a short list of some open problems in this topic.
B. Y. Chen established sharp inequalities between certain Riemannian invariants and the squared mean curvature for submanifolds in real space form as well as in complex space form. In this paper we generalize Chen inequalities for submanifolds of Bochner Kaehler manifolds. Moreover, we consider CR-warped product submanifolds of Bochner Kaehler manifold and establish an inequality for scalar curvature.
In this article, I classify the totally geodesic submanifolds in the complex 2-Grassmannians and in the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians. It turns out that for both of these spaces, the earlier classification of maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank 2, published by Chen and Nagano (B.-Y. Chen, T. Nagano, "Totally geodesic submanifolds of symmetric spaces, II", Duke Math. J. 45 (1978), 405--425) is incomplete. For example, G_2(H^n) with n >= 7 contains totally geodesic submanifolds isometric to a HP^2, its metric scaled such that the minimal sectional curvatur…
A longstanding conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds, proposed by Chen in 1991, is that {\it any biharmonic submanifold in a Euclidean space is minimal}. In the case of a hypersurface $M^n$ in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$, Chen's conjecture was settled in the case of $n=2$ by Chen and Jiang around 1987 independently. Hasanis and Vlachos in 1995 settled Chen's conjecture for a hypersurface with $n=3$. However, the general Chen's conjecture on a hypersurface $M^n$ remains open for $n> 3$. In this paper, we settle Chen's conjecture for hypersurfaces in $\mathbb R^{5}$ for $n=4$.
By establishing two general quadratic inequalities, we obtain some inequalities related to Ricci curvatures for Lagrangian submanifolds of K$\ddot{\mathrm{a}}$hler QCH-manifolds, which generalize some results for Lagrangian submanifolds of complex space forms.
Two geometric inequalities are established for Einstein totally real submanifolds in a complex space form. As immediate applications of these inequalities, some non-existence results are obtained.
Based on Markvorsen and Palmer's work on mean time exit and isoperimetric inequalities we establish slightly better isoperimetric inequalities and mean time exit estimates for minimal submanifolds of $N\times\mathbb{R}$. We also prove isoperimetric inequalities for submanifolds of Hadamard spaces with tamed second fundamental form.
This paper is devoted to Hardy inequalities concerning distance functions from submanifolds of arbitrary codimensions in the Riemannian setting. On a Riemannian manifold with non-negative curvature, we establish several sharp weighted Hardy inequalities in the cases when the submanifold is compact as well as non-compact. In particular, these inequalities remain valid even if the ambient manifold is compact, in which case we find an optimal space of smooth functions to study Hardy inequalities. Further examples are also provided. Our results complement in several aspects those obtained recently…
In the present paper, we obtain the basic Chen inequalities for submanifolds of quaternion Kaehler-like statistical manifolds. Also, we discuss the same inequality for Lagrangian submanifolds.
By using T. Oprea's optimization methods on submanifolds, we give another proof of the inequalities relating the normalized $δ-$Casorati curvature $\hatδ_c(n-1)$ for submanifolds in real space forms. Also, inequalities relating the normalized $δ-$Casorati curvature $δ_C(n-1)$ for submanifolds in real space forms are obtained. Besides, we characterize a kind of Casorati ideal hypersurface of Euclidean 4-space. We also show that this kind of Casorati ideal hypersurface is rigid.
In this paper we prove two sharp inequalities involving the normalized scalar curvature and the generalized normalized $δ$-Casorati curvatures for slant submanifolds in quaternionic space forms. We also characterize those submanifolds for which the equality cases hold. These results are a generalization of some recent results concerning the Casorati curvature for a slant submanifold in a quaternionic space form obtained by Slesar et al.: J. Inequal. Appl. 2014, 2014:123.
In this paper we present not only some properties related to bi-warped product submanifolds of locally conformal almost cosymplectic manifolds, but also we show how the squared norm of the second fundamental form and the bi-warped product's warping functions are related when the bi-warped product submanifold has a proper slant submanifold as a base or fiber.
The aim of this paper is to prove isoperimetric inequalities on submanifolds of the Euclidean space using mass transportation methods. We obtain a sharp ?weighted isoperimetric inequality? and a nonsharp classical inequality similar to the one obtained by J. Michael and L. Simon. The proof relies on the description of a solution of the problem of Monge when the initial measure is supported in a submanifold and the final one supported in a linear subspace of the same dimension.
In the theory of submanifolds, the following problem is fundamental: to establish simple relationships between the main intrinsic invariants and the main extrinsic invariants of the submanifolds. The basic relationships discovered until now [1, 2, 3, 4] are inequalities. To analyze these problems, we follow the idea of C. Udriste [6, 7, 8] that the method of constrained extremum is a natural way to prove geometric inequalities. We improve the Chen's inequality which characterizes a totally real submanifold of a complex space form. For that we suppose that the submanifold is Lagrangian and we fo…
The CR $δ$-invariant for CR-submanifolds was introduced in a recent article [B. Y. Chen, An optimal inequality for CR-warped products in complex space forms involving CR $δ$-invariant, Internat. J. Math. 23} (2012), no. 3, 1250045 (17 pages)]. In this paper, we prove two new optimal inequalities for anti-holomorphic submanifolds in complex space forms involving the CR $δ$-invariant. Moreover, we obtain some classification results for certain anti-holomorphic submanifolds in complex space forms which satisfy the equality case of either inequality.
In this paper we first prove some linear isoperimetric inequalities for submanifolds in the de Sitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom manifolds. Moreover, the equality is attained. Next, we prove some monotonicity formulas for submanifolds with bounded mean curvature vector in warped product manifolds and, as consequences, we give lower bound estimates for the volume of these submanifolds in terms of the warping function. We conclude the paper with an isoperimetric inequality for minimal surfaces.
In the present paper, we discuss the non-trivial warped product pseudo slant submanifolds of type $M_{\bot }\times _{f}M_{θ}$ and $M_θ\times _{f}M_{\bot }$ of nearly Kenmotsu $f$-manifold $\overline{M}$. Firstly, we get some basic properties of these type warped product submanifolds. Then, we establish the general sharp inequalities for squared norm of second fundamental form for mixed totally geodesic warped product pseudo slant submanifolds of both cases, in terms of the warping function and the slant angle. Also the equality cases are verified. We show that some previous results are trivial…
Recently, M. Atcken studied Contact CR-warped prod- uct submanifolds in cosymplectic space forms and established gen- eral sharp inequalities for CR-warped products in a cosymplectic manifold [1]. In the present paper, we obtain an inequality for the squared norm of the second fundamental form in terms of constant ?$ϕ$-sectional curvature for hemi-slant products in cosymplectic mani- folds. An inequality for hemi-slant warped products in a cosymplectc manifold is also given. The equality case is considered.
In this paper, we study warped product submanifolds of nearly trans-Sasakian manifolds. The non-existence of the warped product semi-slant submanifolds of the type $N_θ\times{_{f}N_T}$ is shown, whereas some characterization and new geometric obstructions are obtained for the warped products of the type $N_T\times{_{f}N_θ}$. We establish two general inequalities for the squared norm of the second fundamental form. The first inequality generalizes derived inequalities for some contact metric manifolds [16, 18, 19, 24], while by a new technique, the second inequality is constructed to express th…
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional closed orientable submanifold in an $N$-dimensional space form. When $1<p \le \frac n2 + 1$, we obtain an upper bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian in terms of the mean curvature of $M$ and the curvature of the space form. This generalizes the Reilly inequality for the Laplacian [9, 15] to the $p$-Laplacian and extends the work of [8] for the $p$-Laplacian.
B. Y. Chen establish the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the squared mean curvature for submanifolds of Riemannian space form with arbitrary codimension. In this paper, we generalize the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the squared norm of mean curvature vector for submanifolds of Bochner Kahler manifolds.
We establish some inequalities of Chen's type between certain intrinsic invariants (involving sectional, Ricci and scalar curvatures) and the squared mean curvature of submanifolds tangent to the structure vector fields of a generalized S-space-form and we discuss the equality cases of them. We apply the obtained results to slant submanifolds.
In this paper, we solve affirmatively B.-Y. Chen's conjecture for hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space, under a generic condition. More precisely, every biharmonic hypersurface of the Euclidean space must be minimal if their principal curvatures are simple, and the associated frame field is irreducible.
Our paper is an attempt to to verify the Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds and to classify biconservative submanifolds. In doing so we provide an affirmative answer to Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds. We prove that every biconservative Lorentz hypersurface $M_{1}^{n}$ in $\mathbb{E}_{1}^{n+1}$ having complex eigenvalues has constant mean curvature. Moreover, every biharmonic Lorentz hypersurface $M_{1}^{n}$ having complex eigenvalues in $\mathbb{E}_{1}^{n+1}$ must be minimal.
In this paper we prove general inequalities involving the weighted mean curvature of compact submanifolds immersed in weighted manifolds. As a consequence we obtain a relative linear isoperimetric inequality for such submanifolds. We also prove an extrinsic upper bound to the first non zero eigenvalue of the drift Laplacian on closed submanifolds of weighted manifolds.
In this paper we provide an extension to the Jellett-Minkowski's formula for immersed submanifolds into ambient manifolds which possesses a pole and radial curvatures bounded from above or below by the radial sectional curvatures of a rotationally symmetric model space. Using this Jellett-Minkowski's generalized formula we can focus on several isoperimetric problems. More precisely, on lower bounds for isoperimetric quotients of any precompact domain with smooth boundary, or on the isoperimetric profile of the submanifold and its modified volume. In the particular case of a model space with st…
We show that for an isometric immersion of a complete Riemannian manifold into a Riemannian manifold with non-positive curvature, the norm of the mean curvature vector field is square integrable, then it is minimal. This is a partial affirmative answer of the B. Y. Chen's conjecture.
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional Lagrangian submanifold of a complex space form. We prove a pointwise inequality $$δ(n_1,\ldots,n_k) \leq a(n,k,n_1,\ldots,n_k) \|H\|^2 + b(n,k,n_1,\ldots,n_k)c,$$ with on the left hand side any delta-invariant of the Riemannian manifold $M$ and on the right hand side a linear combination of the squared mean curvature of the immersion and the constant holomorphic sectional curvature of the ambient space. The coefficients on the right hand side are optimal in the sence that there exist non-minimal examples satisfying equality at at least one point. We also character…
In this paper, we prove a Sobolev and isoperimetric inequalities for submanifold in weighted manifold. Our results generalize the Hoffman-Spruck's inequalities.
We consider a complete nonnegative biminimal submanifold M (that is, a complete biminimal submanifold with lambda>=0) in a Euclidean space E^N. Assume that the immersion is proper, that is, the preimage of every compact set in E^N is also compact in M. Then, we prove that M is minimal. From this result, we give an affirmative partial answer to Chen's conjecture. For the case of lambda<0, we construct examples of biminimal submanifolds and curves.
We consider a complete biharmonic immersed submanifold $M$ in an Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^N$. Assume that the immersion is proper, that is, the preimage of every compact set in $\mathbb{E}^N$ is also compact in $M$. Then, we prove that $M$ is minimal. It is considered as an affirmative answer to the global version of Chen's conjecture for biharmonic submanifolds.
Some of the most known integral inequalities are the Sobolev, Hardy and Rellich inequalities in Euclidean spaces. In the context of submanifolds, the Sobolev inequality was proved by Michael-Simon and Hoffman-Spruck. Since then, a sort of applications to the submanifold theory has been derived from those inequalities. Years later, Carron obtained a Hardy inequality for submanifolds in Hadamard spaces. In this paper, we prove the general Hardy and Rellich Inequalities for submanifolds in Hadamard spaces. Some applications are given and we also analyse the equality cases.
We establish two main inequalities; one for the norm of the second fundamental form and the other for the matrix of the shape operator. The results obtained are for cosymplectic manifolds and, for these, we show that the contact warped product submanifolds naturally possess a geometric property; namely $\mathcal{D}_1$-minimality which, by means of the Gauss equation, allows us to obtain an optimal general inequality. For sake of generalization, we state our hypotheses for nearly cosymplectic manifolds, then we obtain them as particular cases for cosymplectic manifolds. For the other part of th…
Recently, B.-Y. Chen and O. J. Garay studied pointwise slant submanifolds of almost Hermitian manifolds. By using the notion of pointwise slant submanifolds, we investigate the geometry of pointwise semi-slant submanifolds and their warped products in Sasakian and cosymplectic manifolds. We prove that there exist no proper pointwise semi-slant warped product submanifold other than contact CR-warped products in Sasakian manifolds. We give non-trivial examples of such submanifolds in cosypmlectic manifolds and obtain several fundamental results, including a characterization for warped product po…
We classify Lagrangian submanifolds of complex space forms, whose second fundamental form can be written in a certain way, depending on a real parameter. For some special values of this parameter, the resulting submanifolds are ideal in the sense that they realize equality in an inequality for a Chen's delta-curvature.
B.-Y. Chen initiated the study of warped product submanifolds in his fundamental seminal papers \cite{C1,C2,C2.1}. In this paper, we study contact CR-warped product submanifolds of cosymplectic space forms and prove an optimal inequality by using Gauss and Codazzi equations. In addition, we obtain two geometric inequalities for contact CR-warped product submanifolds with a compact invariant factor.
