In this article, I classify the totally geodesic submanifolds in the complex 2-Grassmannians and in the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians. It turns out that for both of these spaces, the earlier classification of maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank 2, published by Chen and Nagano (B.-Y. Chen, T. Nagano, "Totally geodesic submanifolds of symmetric spaces, II", Duke Math. J. 45 (1978), 405--425) is incomplete.
For example, G_2(H^n) with n >= 7 contains totally geodesic submanifolds isometric to a HP^2, its metric scaled such that the minimal sectional curvature is 1/5; they are maximal in G_2(H^7). Also G_2(C^n) with n >= 6 contains totally geodesic submanifolds which are isometric to a CP^2 contained in the HP^2 mentioned above; they are maximal in G_2(C^6). Neither submanifolds are mentioned in the cited paper by Chen and Nagano.
Almost para-quaternionic structures on smooth manifolds of dimension $2n$ are equivalent to almost Grassmannian structures of type $(2,n)$. We remind the equivalence and exhibit some interrelations between subjects that were previously studied independently from the para-quaternionic and the Grassmannian point of view. In particular, we relate the respective normalization conditions, distinguished curves and twistor constructions.
In this paper we establish some inequalities concerning the $k$-Ricci curvature of a slant submanifold in a quaternionic space form. We also obtain obstructions to the existence of quaternionic slant immersions in quaternionic space forms with unfull first normal bundle.
In this paper, authors have established Chen's inequalities for the submanifolds of quaternionic Kaehler manifolds characterized by Ricci quarter-symmetric metric connection. Other than these inequalities, we have also derived generalized normalized Casorati curvature inequalities for the same submanifolds.
Let $Gr_k(\H^n)$ be the Grassmannian manifold of Quaternionic $k$-planes in $\H^n$ and let $γ^n_k\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ denote the Stiefel bundle of quaternionic $k$-frames in $\H^n$. Let $σ$ denote the first symplectic Pontrjagin form associated with the universal connection on $γ^n_k$. We show that every 4-form $ω$ on a smooth manifold $M$ can be induced from $σ$ by a smooth immersion $f:M\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ (for sufficiently large $k$ and $n$) provided there exists a continuous map $f_0:M\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ which pulls back the cohomology class of $σ$ onto that of $ω$.
In this paper we prove two sharp inequalities involving the normalized scalar curvature and the generalized normalized $δ$-Casorati curvatures for slant submanifolds in quaternionic space forms. We also characterize those submanifolds for which the equality cases hold. These results are a generalization of some recent results concerning the Casorati curvature for a slant submanifold in a quaternionic space form obtained by Slesar et al.: J. Inequal. Appl. 2014, 2014:123.
The generalized Feix--Kaledin construction shows that c-projective $2n$-manifolds with curvature of type $(1,1)$ are precisely the submanifolds of quaternionic $4n$-manifolds which are fixed points set of a special type of quaternionic $S^1$ action $v$. In this paper, we consider this construction in the presence of infinitesimal symmetries of the two geometries. First, we prove that the submaximally symmetric c-projective model with type $(1,1)$ curvature is a submanifold of a submaximally symmetric quaternionic model, and show how this fits into the construction. We give conditions for when …
We prove an extension of a theorem of A.Ros on a characterization of seven compact Kaehler submanifolds by holomorphic pinching to certain submanifolds of the complex Grassmannian manifolds.
In this paper we give a unified framework for the construction of complex valued harmonic morphisms from the real, complex and quaternionic Grassmannians and their non-compact duals. This gives a positive answer to the corresponding open existence problem in the real and quaternionic cases.
Minimal Submanifolds of The Complex and Quaternionic Projective and Hyperbolic Spaces $\cn P^{2n-1}$, $\hn P^{2n-1}$, $\cn H^{2n-1}$, $\hn H^{2n-1}$ via Harmonic Morphisms
On a para-quaternionic Kähler manifold $(\widetilde M^{4n},Q,\widetilde g)$, which is first of all a pseudo-Riemannian manifold, a natural definition of (almost) Kähler and (almost) para-Kähler submanifold $(M^{2m},\mathcal{J},g)$ can be given where $\mathcal{J}=J_1|_M$ is a (para-)complex structure on $M$ which is the restriction of a section $J_1$ of the para-quaternionic bundle $Q$. In this paper, we extend to such a submanifold $M$ most of the results proved by Alekseevsky and Marchiafava, 2001, where Hermitian and Kähler submanifolds of a quaternionic Kähler manifold have been studied. Co…
We introduce the notion of CR quaternionic map and we prove that any such real-analytic map, between CR quaternionic manifolds, is the restriction of a quaternionic map between quaternionic manifolds. As an application, we prove, for example, that for any submanifold $M$, of dimension $4k-1$, of a quaternionic manifold $N$, such that $TM$ generates a quaternionic subbundle of $TN|_M$, of (real) rank $4k$, there exists, locally, a quaternionic submanifold of $N$, containing $M$ as a hypersurface.
We determine the invariants characterizing the $Sp(n)$-orbits in the real Grassmannian $Gr^\R(2k,4n)$ of the $2k$-dimensional complex and $Σ$-complex subspaces of a $4n$-dimensional Hermitian quaternionic vector space. A $Σ$-complex subspace is the orthogonal sum of complex subspaces by different, up to sign, compatible complex structure. The result is obtained by considering two main features of such subspaces. The first is that any such subspace admits a decomposition into an Hermitian orthogonal sum of 4-dimensional complex addends plus a 2-dimensional totally complex subspace if $k$ is odd…
A submanifold of a Riemannian symmetric space is called parallel if its second fundamental form is a parallel section of the appropriate tensor bundle. We classify parallel submanifolds of the Grassmannian $\rmG^+_2(\R^{n+2})$ which parameterizes the oriented 2-planes of the Euclidean space $\R^{n+2}$\,. Our main result states that every complete parallel submanifold of $\rmG^+_2(\R^{n+2})$\,, which is not a curve, is contained in some totally geodesic submanifold as a symmetric submanifold. This result holds also if the ambient space is the non-compact dual of $\rmG^+_2(\R^{n+2})$\,.
We use Donaldson's approximately holomorphic techniques to build embeddings of a closed symplectic manifold with symplectic form of integer class in the grassmannians Gr(r,N). We assure that these embeddings are asymptotically holomorphic in a precise sense. We study first the particular case of embeddings in the projective space $CP^N$ obtaining control on N. The main reason of our study is the construction of singular determinantal submanifolds as the intersection of the embedding with certain ``generalized Schur cycles'' defined on a product of grassmannians. It is shown that the symplectic…
In the Stiefel manifold $X_{n,k}$, we replace Frankel linear height function by a quadratic one. We prove this is still a Morse-Bott function, whose structure of critical levels presents a dichotomy according to the sign of $n-2k$. The critical submanifolds are no longer Grassmannians but total spaces of fibrations of basis a product of two Grassmannians. We explicitly integrate the gradient flow.
In this article we discuss the interaction between the geometry of a quaternion-Kahler manifold M and that of the Grassmannian G(3,g) of oriented 3-dimensional subspaces of a compact Lie algebra g. This interplay is described mainly through the moment mapping induced by the action of a group G of quaternionic isometries on M. We give an alternative expression for the endomorphisms I_{1},I_{2},I_{3}, both in terms of the holonomy representation of M and the structure of the Grassmannian's tangent space. A correspondence between the solutions of respective twistor-type equations on M and G(3,g) …
We use the Cartan representations of $SO(3)$ and $SU(3)$, and an irreducible 14-dimensional representation of $Sp(3)$ to construct certain totally geodesic submanifolds in "skew" position in the complex quadrics, the complex 2-Grassmannians and the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians.
We fully classify all Lagrangian submanifolds of a complex Grassmannian which are an orbit of a compact group of isometries and have positive Euler characteristic.
We provide a classification theorem for compact stable minimal immersions (CSMI) of codimension $1$ or dimension $1$ (codimension $1$ and $2$ or dimension $1$ and $2$) in the product of a complex (quaternionic) projective space with any other Riemannian manifold. We characterize the complex minimal immersions of codimension $2$ or dimension $2$ as the only CSMI in the product of two complex projective spaces. As an application, we characterize the CSMI of codimension $1$ or dimension $1$ (codimension $1$ and $2$ or dimension $1$ and $2$) in the product of a complex (quaternionic) projective sp…
We introduce the equation of n-dimensional totally geodesic submanifolds of a manifold E as a submanifold of the second order jet space of n-dimensional submanifolds of E. Next we study the geometry of n-Grassmannian equivalent connections, that is linear connections without torsion admitting the same equation of n-dimensional totally geodesic submanifolds. We define the n-Grassmannian structure as the equivalence class of such connections, recovering for n=1 the case of theory of projectively equivalent connections. By introducing the equation of parametrized n-dimensional totally geodesic su…
There is a hierarchy of commuting soliton equations associated to each symmetric space U/K. When U/K has rank n, the first n flows in the hierarchy give rise to a natural first order non-linear system of partial diffferential equations in n variables, the so called U/K-system. Let G_{m,n} denote the Grassmannian of n-dimensional linear subspaces in R^{m+n}, and G_{m,n}^1 the Grassmannian of space like m-dimensional linear subspaces in the Lorentzian space R^{m+n,1}. In this paper, we use techniques from soliton theory to study submanifolds in space forms whose Gauss-Codazzi equations are gauge…
We prove that, given a certain isometric action of a two-dimensional Abelian group A on a quaternionic Kähler manifold M which preserves a submanifold N\subset M, the quotient M'=N/A has a natural Kähler structure. We verify that the assumptions on the group action and on the submanifold N\subset M are satisfied for a large class of examples obtained from the supergravity c-map. In particular, we find that all quaternionic Kähler manifolds M in the image of the c-map admit an integrable complex structure compatible with the quaternionic structure, such that N\subset M is a complex submanifold.…
In this paper we give a characterization of real hypersurfaces in noncompact complex two-plane Grassmannian $SU_{2,m}/S(U_2 U_m)$, $m \geq 2$ with Reeb vector field $ξ$ belonging to the maximal quaternionic subbundle $\mathcal Q$. Then it becomes a tube over a totally real totally geodesic ${\mathbb H}H^n$, $m=2n$, in noncompact complex two-plane Grassmannian $SU_{2,m}/S(U_2 U_m)$, a horosphere whose center at the infinity is singular or another exceptional case.
It is proved the non-existence of Hopf hypersurfaces in $G_{2}({\Bbb C}^{m+2})$, $m \geq 3$, whose normal Jacobi operator is semi-parallel, if the principal curvature of the Reeb vector field is non-vanishing and the component of the Reeb vector field in the maximal quaternionic subbundle ${\frak D}$ or its orthogonal complement ${\frak D}^{\bot}$ is invariant by the shape operator.
We prove that there do not exist odd-dimensional stable compact minimal immersions in the product of two complex projective spaces. We also prove that the only stable compact minimal immersions in the product of a quaternionic projective space with any other Riemannian manifold are the products of quaternionic projective subspaces with compact stable minimal immersions of the second manifold in the Riemmanian product. These generalize similar results of the second-named author of immersions with low dimensions or codimensions to immersions with arbitrary dimensions. In addition, we prove that …
We prove that a maximal totally complex submanifold $N^{2n}$ of the quaternionic projective space $\mathbb{H}\mathbb{P}^n$ ($n\geq 2$) is a parallel submanifold, provided one of the following conditions is satisfied: (1) $N$ is the orbit of a compact Lie group of isometries, (2) the restricted normal holonomy is a proper subgroup of ${\rm U}(n)$.
We describe a diagram containing the zero sets of the moment maps associated to the diagonal U(1) and Sp(1) actions on the quaternionic projective space HP^n. These sets are related both to focal sets of submanifolds and to Sasakian-Einstein structures on induced Hopf bundles. As an application, we construct a complex structure on the Stiefel manifolds V_2 (C^{n+1}) and V_4 (R^{n+1}), the one on the former manifold not being compatible with its known hypercomplex structure.
Combining the tools of geometric analysis with properties of Jordan angles and angle space distributions, we derive a spherical and a Euclidean Bernstein theorem for minimal submanifolds of arbitrary dimension and codimension, under the condition that the Gauss image is contained in some geometrically defined closed region of a Grassmannian manifold. The proof depends on the subharmoncity of an auxiliary function, the Codazzi equations and geometric measure theory.
We study curvature-adapted submanifolds of general symmetric spaces. We generalize Cartan's theorem for isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres and Wang's classification of isoparametric Hopf hypersurfaces in complex projective spaces to any compact symmetric space. Our second objective is to investigate such hypersurfaces in some specific symmetric spaces. Various classification results in the Cayley projective and hyperbolic planes and in complex two-plane Grassmannians are obtained under some additional assumptions.
We find many examples of compact Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ whose closed minimal hypersurfaces satisfy a lower bound on their index that is linear in their first Betti number. Moreover, we show that these bounds remain valid when the metric $g$ is replaced with $g'$ in a neighbourhood of $g$. Our examples $(M,g)$ consist of certain minimal isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres; their focal manifolds; the Lie groups $SU(n)$ for $n\leq 17$, and $Sp(n)$ for all $n$; and all quaternionic Grassmannians.
We obtain defining equations of the smooth equivariant compactification of the Grassmannian of the complex associative $3$-planes in $\C^7$, which is the parametrizing variety of all quaternionic subalgebras of the algebra of complex octonions $\OO\cong \C^8$. By studying the torus fixed points, we compute the Poincaré polynomial of the compactification.
Y. J. Suh and H. Lee (Bull. Korean. Math. Soc. 47, 551-561 (2010)) characterized real hypersurfaces $M$ of type $B$ by the invariance of vector bundle $JTM^\perp$ under the shape operator and the orthogonality of $JTM^\perp$ and $\mathcal {J}TM^\perp$, where $TM^\perp$, $J$ and $\mathcal J$ are the normal bundle of $M$, Kähler structure and Quaternionic Kähler structure of $G_2({\mathbb{C}}^{m+2})$ respectively. In this paper, we characterize real hypersurfaces $M$ of type A by the invariance of the vector bundle $JTM^\perp$ under the shape operator with the Reeb vector field in $\mathcal {J}T…
A theorem of Lawson and Simons states that the only stable minimal submanifolds in complex projective spaces are complex submanifolds. We generalize their result to the cases of quaternionic and octonionic projective spaces. Our approach gives a unified viewpoint towards conformal and projective geometries.
Let Σbe a complete minimal Lagrangian submanifold of \C^n. We identify regions in the Grassmannian of Lagrangian subspaces so that whenever the image of the Gauss map of Σlies in one of these regions, then Σis an affine space.
Starting from a complex manifold S with a real-analytic c-projective structure whose curvature has type (1,1), and a complex line bundle L with a connection whose curvature has type (1,1), we construct the twistor space Z of a quaternionic manifold M with a quaternionic circle action which contains S as a totally complex submanifold fixed by the action. This extends a construction of hypercomplex manifolds, including hyperkaehler metrics on cotangent bundles, obtained independently by B. Feix and D. Kaledin. When S is a Riemann surface, M is a self-dual conformal 4-manifold, and the quotient o…
In this paper we study the analytic realisation of the discrete series representations for the group $G=Sp(1,1)$ as a subspace of the space of square integrable sections in a homogeneous vector bundle over the symmetric space $G/K:=Sp(1,1) /(Sp(1) \times Sp(1))$. We use the Szegö map to give expressions for the restrictions of the $K$-types occurring in the representation spaces to the submanifold $AK/K$.
We consider the moduli space M_r of polygons with fixed side lengths in five-dimensional eucledian space. We analyze the local structure of its singularities and exhibit a real-analytic equivalence between M_r and a weighted quotient of the n-fold product of the quaternionic projective line HP^1 by the diagonal PSL(2,H)-action. We explore the relation between M_r and the fixed point set of an anti-symplectic involution on a GIT quotient Gr(2,4)^n/SL(4,C). We generalize the Gel'fand-MacPherson correspondence to more general complex Grassmannians and to the quaternionic context, and realize our …
For a submanifold with flat normal bundle in a space form there is a normal orthonormal basis that simultaneously diagonalizes the corresponding Weingarten operators, and at which these operators satisfy a simple Codazzi symmetry. When the second fundamental form has zero index of relative nullity, the image of the Gauss map as defined by Obata is a submanifold of a generalized Grassmannian manifold, with induced metric given by the third fundamental form, corresponding to the sum of the squares of these operators. In this case, we show that the Riemann curvature tensor of the Gauss image is c…
The $L^2$-metric or Fubini-Study metric on the non-linear Grassmannian of all submanifolds of type $M$ in a Riemannian manifold $(N,g)$ induces geodesic distance 0. We discuss another metric which involves the mean curvature and shows that its geodesic distance is a good topological metric. The vanishing phenomenon for the geodesic distance holds also for all diffeomorphism groups for the $L^2$-metric.
We classify 4-dimensional austere submanifolds in Euclidean space ruled by 2-planes. The algebraic possibilities for second fundamental forms of an austere 4-fold M were classified by Bryant, falling into three types which we label A, B, and C. We show that if M is 2-ruled of Type A, then the ruling map from M into the Grassmannian of 2-planes in R^n is holomorphic, and we give a construction for M starting with a holomorphic curve in an appropriate twistor space. If M is 2-ruled of Type B, then M is either a generalized helicoid in R^6 or the product of two classical helicoids in R^3. If M is…
Let $A$ be a positive injective operator in a Hilbert space (\h, <,>), and denote by [,] the inner product defined by A: [f,g]=<Af,g>. A closed subspace $\s \subset \h$ is called A-compatible if there exists a closed complement for $\s$, which is orthogonal to $\s$ with respect to the inner product [,]. Equivalently, if there exists a necessarily unique idempotent operator $Q_\s$ such that $R(Q_\s)=\s$, which is symmetric for this inner product. The compatible Grassmannian $Gr_A$ is the set of all A-compatible subspaces of $\h$. By parametrizing it via the one to one correspondence $\s\leftrig…
We develop a novel analogue of Euclidean PCA (principal component analysis) for data taking values on a Riemannian symmetric space, using totally geodesic submanifolds as approximating lower dimnsional submanifolds. We illustrate the technique on n-spheres, Grassmannians, n-tori and polyspheres.
The present article is the final part of a series on the classification of the totally geodesic submanifolds of the irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank 2. After this problem has been solved for the 2-Grassmannians in my previous papers cited in the present paper as [K1] and [K2], and for the space SU(3)/SO(3) in [K3], Section 6, we now solve the classification for the remaining irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank 2 and compact type: SU(6)/Sp(3), SO(10)/U(5), E6/(U(1)*Spin(10)), E6/F4, G2/SO(4), SU(3), Sp(2) and G2. Similarly as for the spaces already investigated in the…
We establish inequalities for the eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators on compact submanifolds (possibly with nonempty boundary) of Euclidean spaces, of spheres, and of real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces, which are related to inequalities for the Laplacian on Euclidean domains due to Payne, Pólya, and Weinberger and to Yang, but which depend in an explicit way on the mean curvature. In later sections, we prove similar results for Schrödinger operators on homogeneous Riemannian spaces and, more generally, on any Riemannian manifold that admits an eigenmap into a sphere, as well as…
