We construct explicit complex-valued $p$-harmonic functions and harmonic morphisms on the classical compact symmetric complex and quaternionic Grassmannians. The ingredients for our construction method are joint eigenfunctions of the classical Laplace-Beltrami and the so called conformality operator. A known duality principle implies that these $p$-harmonic functions and harmonic morphisms also induce such solutions on the Riemannian symmetric non-compact dual spaces.
Almost para-quaternionic structures on smooth manifolds of dimension $2n$ are equivalent to almost Grassmannian structures of type $(2,n)$. We remind the equivalence and exhibit some interrelations between subjects that were previously studied independently from the para-quaternionic and the Grassmannian point of view. In particular, we relate the respective normalization conditions, distinguished curves and twistor constructions.
Let $Gr_k(\H^n)$ be the Grassmannian manifold of Quaternionic $k$-planes in $\H^n$ and let $γ^n_k\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ denote the Stiefel bundle of quaternionic $k$-frames in $\H^n$. Let $σ$ denote the first symplectic Pontrjagin form associated with the universal connection on $γ^n_k$. We show that every 4-form $ω$ on a smooth manifold $M$ can be induced from $σ$ by a smooth immersion $f:M\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ (for sufficiently large $k$ and $n$) provided there exists a continuous map $f_0:M\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ which pulls back the cohomology class of $σ$ onto that of $ω$.
In this paper we give a unified framework for the construction of complex valued harmonic morphisms from the real, complex and quaternionic Grassmannians and their non-compact duals. This gives a positive answer to the corresponding open existence problem in the real and quaternionic cases.
In this article, I classify the totally geodesic submanifolds in the complex 2-Grassmannians and in the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians. It turns out that for both of these spaces, the earlier classification of maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank 2, published by Chen and Nagano (B.-Y. Chen, T. Nagano, "Totally geodesic submanifolds of symmetric spaces, II", Duke Math. J. 45 (1978), 405--425) is incomplete. For example, G_2(H^n) with n >= 7 contains totally geodesic submanifolds isometric to a HP^2, its metric scaled such that the minimal sectional curvatur…
We determine the invariants characterizing the $Sp(n)$-orbits in the real Grassmannian $Gr^\R(2k,4n)$ of the $2k$-dimensional complex and $Σ$-complex subspaces of a $4n$-dimensional Hermitian quaternionic vector space. A $Σ$-complex subspace is the orthogonal sum of complex subspaces by different, up to sign, compatible complex structure. The result is obtained by considering two main features of such subspaces. The first is that any such subspace admits a decomposition into an Hermitian orthogonal sum of 4-dimensional complex addends plus a 2-dimensional totally complex subspace if $k$ is odd…
Minimal Submanifolds of The Complex and Quaternionic Projective and Hyperbolic Spaces $\cn P^{2n-1}$, $\hn P^{2n-1}$, $\cn H^{2n-1}$, $\hn H^{2n-1}$ via Harmonic Morphisms
In the Stiefel manifold $X_{n,k}$, we replace Frankel linear height function by a quadratic one. We prove this is still a Morse-Bott function, whose structure of critical levels presents a dichotomy according to the sign of $n-2k$. The critical submanifolds are no longer Grassmannians but total spaces of fibrations of basis a product of two Grassmannians. We explicitly integrate the gradient flow.
In this article we discuss the interaction between the geometry of a quaternion-Kahler manifold M and that of the Grassmannian G(3,g) of oriented 3-dimensional subspaces of a compact Lie algebra g. This interplay is described mainly through the moment mapping induced by the action of a group G of quaternionic isometries on M. We give an alternative expression for the endomorphisms I_{1},I_{2},I_{3}, both in terms of the holonomy representation of M and the structure of the Grassmannian's tangent space. A correspondence between the solutions of respective twistor-type equations on M and G(3,g) …
Let $Γ\stackrel{i}{\hookrightarrow} L$ be a lattice in the real simple Lie group $L$. If $L$ is of rank at least 2 (respectively locally isomorphic to $Sp(n,1)$) any unbounded morphism $ρ: Γ\longrightarrow G$ into a simple real Lie group $G$ essentially extends to a Lie morphism $ρ_L: L \longrightarrow G$ (Margulis's superrigidity theorem, respectively Corlette's theorem). In particular any such morphism is infinitesimally, thus locally, rigid. On the other hand, for $L=SU(n,1)$, even morphisms of the form $ρ: Γ\stackrel{i}{\hookrightarrow} L \longrightarrow G$ are not infinitesimally rigid in…
In this paper we give a characterization of real hypersurfaces in noncompact complex two-plane Grassmannian $SU_{2,m}/S(U_2 U_m)$, $m \geq 2$ with Reeb vector field $ξ$ belonging to the maximal quaternionic subbundle $\mathcal Q$. Then it becomes a tube over a totally real totally geodesic ${\mathbb H}H^n$, $m=2n$, in noncompact complex two-plane Grassmannian $SU_{2,m}/S(U_2 U_m)$, a horosphere whose center at the infinity is singular or another exceptional case.
It is proved the non-existence of Hopf hypersurfaces in $G_{2}({\Bbb C}^{m+2})$, $m \geq 3$, whose normal Jacobi operator is semi-parallel, if the principal curvature of the Reeb vector field is non-vanishing and the component of the Reeb vector field in the maximal quaternionic subbundle ${\frak D}$ or its orthogonal complement ${\frak D}^{\bot}$ is invariant by the shape operator.
We use the Cartan representations of $SO(3)$ and $SU(3)$, and an irreducible 14-dimensional representation of $Sp(3)$ to construct certain totally geodesic submanifolds in "skew" position in the complex quadrics, the complex 2-Grassmannians and the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians.
We show that, in quaternionic geometry, the Ward transform is a manifestation of the functoriality of the basic correspondence between the $ρ$-quaternionic manifolds and their twistor spaces. We apply this fact, together with the Penrose transform, to obtain existence results for hypercomplex manifolds and for harmonic morphisms from hyper-Kaehler manifolds.
We obtain defining equations of the smooth equivariant compactification of the Grassmannian of the complex associative $3$-planes in $\C^7$, which is the parametrizing variety of all quaternionic subalgebras of the algebra of complex octonions $\OO\cong \C^8$. By studying the torus fixed points, we compute the Poincaré polynomial of the compactification.
Y. J. Suh and H. Lee (Bull. Korean. Math. Soc. 47, 551-561 (2010)) characterized real hypersurfaces $M$ of type $B$ by the invariance of vector bundle $JTM^\perp$ under the shape operator and the orthogonality of $JTM^\perp$ and $\mathcal {J}TM^\perp$, where $TM^\perp$, $J$ and $\mathcal J$ are the normal bundle of $M$, Kähler structure and Quaternionic Kähler structure of $G_2({\mathbb{C}}^{m+2})$ respectively. In this paper, we characterize real hypersurfaces $M$ of type A by the invariance of the vector bundle $JTM^\perp$ under the shape operator with the Reeb vector field in $\mathcal {J}T…
In this article we study the stability problem for the Einstein-Hilbert functional on compact symmetric spaces following and completing the seminal work of Koiso on the subject. We classify in detail the irreducible representations of simple Lie algebras with Casimir eigenvalue less than the Casimir eigenvalue of the adjoint representation, and use this information to prove the stability of the Einstein metrics on both the quaternionic and Cayley projective plane. Moreover we prove that the Einstein metrics on quaternionic Grassmannians different from projective spaces are unstable.
We find many examples of compact Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ whose closed minimal hypersurfaces satisfy a lower bound on their index that is linear in their first Betti number. Moreover, we show that these bounds remain valid when the metric $g$ is replaced with $g'$ in a neighbourhood of $g$. Our examples $(M,g)$ consist of certain minimal isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres; their focal manifolds; the Lie groups $SU(n)$ for $n\leq 17$, and $Sp(n)$ for all $n$; and all quaternionic Grassmannians.
We develope a new scheme for the construction of explicit complex-valued proper biharmonic functions on Riemannian Lie groups. We exploit this and manufacture many infinite series of uncountable families of new solutions on the special unitary group $SU(n)$. We then show that the special orthogonal group $SO(n)$ and the quaternionic unitary group $Sp(n)$ fall into the scheme. As a by-product we obtain new harmonic morphisms on these groups. All the constructed maps are defined on open and dense subsets of the corresponding spaces.
In this paper we introduce a new algebraic device, which enables us to treat the quaternions as though they were a commutative field. This is of interest both for its own sake, and because it can be applied to develop an "algebraic geometry" of noncompact hypercomplex manifolds. The basic building blocks of the theory are AH modules, which should be thought of "vector spaces" over the quaternions. An AH-module is a left module over the quaternions H, together with a real vector subspace. There are natural concepts of linear map and tensor product of AH-modules, which have many of the propertie…
We prove that compact quaternionic-Kähler manifolds of positive scalar curvature admit no almost complex structure, even in the weak sense, except for the complex Grassmannians $Gr_2(C^{n+2})$. We also prove that irreducible inner symmetric spaces $M^{4n}$ of compact type are not weakly complex, except for spheres and Hermitian symmetric spaces.
