The reduction theorems for general linear and classical connections are generalized for operators with values in higher order gauge-natural bundles. We prove that natural operators depending on the $s_1$-jets of classical connections, on the $s_2$-jets of general linear connections and on the $r$-jets of tensor fields with values in gauge-natural bundles of order $k\ge 1$, $s_1+2\ge s_2$, $s_1,s_2\ge r-1\ge k-2$, can be factorized through the $(k-2)$-jets of both connections, the $(k-1)$-jets of the tensor fields and sufficiently high covariant differentials of the curvature tensors and the tensor fields.
We generalize reduction theorems for classical connections to operators with values in $k$-th order natural bundles. Using the first reduction theorem in order two we classify all (0,2)-tensor fields on the cotangent bundle of a manifold with a linear (non-symmetric) connection.
From a certain strongly equivariant bundle gerbe with connection and curving over a smooth manifold on which a Lie group acts, we construct under some conditions a bundle gerbe with connection and curving over the quotient space. In general, the construction requires a choice, and we can consequently obtain distinct stable isomorphism classes of bundle gerbes with connection and curving over the quotient space. A bundle gerbe naturally arising in Chern-Simons theory provides an example of the reduction.
In this note we give conditions which ensure the reduction of a symplectic connection in the process of a Marsden-Weinstein reduction and of the reduction of a presymplectic manifold.
In this paper, we compute sub-Riemannian limits of Gaussian curvature associated to two kinds of Schouten-Van Kampen affine connections and the adapted connection for a Euclidean $C^2$-smooth surface in the Heisenberg group away from characteristic points and signed geodesic curvature associated to two kinds of Schouten-Van Kampen affine connections and the adapted connection for Euclidean $C^2$-smooth curves on surfaces. We get Gauss-Bonnet theorems associated to two kinds of Schouten-Van Kampen affine connections in the Heisenberg group.
We give an elementary construction of symplectic connections through reduction. This provides an elegant description of a class of symmetric spaces and gives examples of symplectic connections with Ricci type curvature, which are not locally symmetric; the existence of such symplectic connections was unknown.
A polysymplectic structure is a vector-valued symplectic form, that is, a closed nondegenerate 2-form with values in a vector space. We first outline the polysymplectic Hamiltonian formalism with coefficients in a vector space $V$, then apply this framework to show that the moduli space $\mathcal{M}(P)$ of flat connections on a principal bundle $P$ over a compact manifold $M$ is a polysymplectic reduction of the space $\mathcal{A}(P)$ of all connections on $P$ by the action of the gauge group $\mathcal{G}$ with respect to a natural $Ω^2(M)/B^2(M)$-valued symplectic structure on $\mathcal{A}(P)…
In this paper, we define deformed Schouten-Van Kampen connections which are metric connections and compute sub-Riemannian limits of Gaussian curvature for a Euclidean C2-smooth surface associated to deformed Schouten-Van Kampen connections with two kinds of distributions in the affine group and the group of rigid motions of the Minkowski plane away from characteristic points and signed geodesic curvature for Euclidean C2-smooth curves on surfaces. According to above results, we get Gauss-Bonnet theorems associated to two kinds of deformed Schouten-Van Kampen connections in the affine group and…
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the Palais-Smale Condition C to hold for the Yang-Mills functional for connections that are invariant under a Lie group action on the manifold with orbits of codimension less than or equal to three. As an application the mountain pass lemma is used to give a simple proof of Wang's theorem on the existence of irreducible non-(anti-)selfdual instantons on S^2 x S^2 .
We introduce and study the notion of Sasaki--Weyl manifold, which is a natural generalization of the notion of Sasaki manifold. We construct a reduction of Sasaki--Weyl manifolds and we show that it commutes with several reductions already existing in the literature.
We discuss a method for constructing multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids or, more exactly, for reducing the task of constructing such connections to a number of in principle simpler tasks involving only Lie groupoids that are both proper and regular.
We give a purely algebraic treatment of reduction theory for connections over the formal punctured disc. Our proofs apply to arbitrary connected linear algebraic groups over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We also state and prove some new quantitative results.
We prove a Berger-type theorem which asserts that if the orthogonal subgroup generated by the torsion tensor (pulled back to a point by parallel transport) of a metric connection with skew-symmetric torsion is not transitive on the sphere, then the space must be locally isometric to a Lie group with a bi-invariant metric or its symmetric dual (we assume the space to be locally irreducible). We also prove that a (simple) Lie group with a bi-invariant metric admits only two flat metric connections with skew-symmetric torsion: the two flat canonical connections. In particular, we get a refinement…
Let $\mathcal M= (M,\mathcal O_\mathcal M)$ be a smooth supermanifold with connection $\nabla$ and Batchelor model $\mathcal O_\mathcal M\congΓ_{ΛE^\ast}$. From $(\mathcal M,\nabla)$ we construct a connection on the total space of the vector bundle $E\to{M}$. This reduction of $\nabla$ is well-defined independently of the isomorphism $\mathcal O_\mathcal M \cong Γ_{ΛE^\ast}$. It erases information, but however it turns out that the natural identification of supercurves in $\mathcal M$ (as maps from $ \mathbb R^{1|1}$ to $\mathcal M$) with curves in $E$ restricts to a 1 to 1 correspondence on g…
We classify the holomorphic structures of the tangent vertical bundle T of the twistor fibration of a quaternionic manifold (M,Q) of dimension bigger than four. In particular, we show that any self-dual quaternionic connection on (M, Q) induces an holomorphic structure on T. We prove that the positive tensor powers of T have no global holomorphic sections, when (M,Q) is compact and admits a compatible quaternionic-Kahler metric of negative (respectively, zero) scalar curvature and the holomorphic structure of T is induced by a closed (respectively, closed but not exact) quaternionic connection…
We discuss Levi-Civita connections on Courant algebroids. We define an appropriate generalization of the curvature tensor and compute the corresponding scalar curvatures in the exact and heterotic case, leading to generalized (bosonic) Einstein-Hilbert type of actions known from supergravity. In particular, we carefully analyze the process of the reduction for the generalized metric, connection, curvature tensor and the scalar curvature.
We define what we call morphisms of Cartan connections. We generalize the main theorems on Cartan connections to theorems on morphisms. Many of the known constructions involving Cartan connections turn out to be examples of morphisms. We prove some basic results concerning completeness of Cartan connections. We provide a new method to prove completeness of Cartan connections using families of morphisms.
Given the Euclidean space $\R^{2n+2}$ endowed with a constant symplectic structure and the standard flat connection, and given a polynomial of degree 2 on that space, Baguis and Cahen have defined a reduction procedure which yields a symplectic manifold endowed with a Ricci-type connection. We observe that any symplectic manifold of dimension greater than 2 endowed with a symplectic connection of Ricci-type is locally given by a local version of such a reduction. We also consider the reverse of this reduction procedure, an induction procedure: we construct globally on a symplectic manifold end…
In this paper we study sectional curvature bounds for Riemannian manifolds with density from the perspective of a weighted torsion free connection introduced recently by the last two authors. We develop two new tools for studying weighted sectional curvature bounds: a new weighted Rauch comparison theorem and a modified notion of convexity for distance functions. As applications we prove generalizations of theorems of Preissman and Byers for negative curvature, the (homeomorphic) quarter-pinched sphere theorem, and Cheeger's finiteness theorem. We also improve results of the first two authors …
We study the trivialization and the reduction of the Tulczyjew's triplet, in the presence of a symmetry and an Ehresmann connection associated to it. We thus obtain trivializations and reductions of iterated tangent and cotangent bundles $T^*TQ$, $TT^*Q$ and $T^*T^*Q$. Accordingly, the symplectomorphisms between these manifolds are properly trivialized and reduced.
In this paper, we prove a local index theorem for the DeRham Hodge-laplacian which is defined by the connection compatible with metric. This connection need not be the Levi-Civita connection. When the connection is Levi-Civita connection, this is the classical local Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem.
By a special symplectic connection we mean a torsion free connection which is either the Levi-Civita connection of a Bochner-Kähler metric of arbitrary signature, a Bochner-bi-Lagrangian connection, a connection of Ricci type or a connection with special symplectic holonomy. A manifold or orbifold with such a connection is called special symplectic. We show that the symplectic reduction of (an open cell of) a parabolic contact manifold by a symmetry vector field is special symplectic in a canonical way. Moreover, we show that any special symplectic manifold or orbifold is locally equivalent to…
Let $G$ be a Lie Group with a left invariant connection such that its connection function is skew-symmetric. Our main goal is to show a version of Pluzhnikov's Theorem for this kind of connection. To this end, we use the stochastic logarithm. More exactly, the stochastic logarithm gives characterizations for Brownian motions and Martingales in $G$, and these characterzations are used to prove Pluzhnikov's Theorem.
The paper presents a classification theorem for the class of flat connections with triangular (0,1)-components on a topologically trivial complex vector bundle over a compact Kahler manifold. As a consequence we obtain several results on the structure of Kähler groups, i.e., the fundamental groups of compact Kahler manifolds.
A hypersurface without umbilics in the n+1 dimensional Euclidean space is known to be determined by the Moebius metric and the Moebius second fundamental form up to a Moebius transformation when n>2. In this paper we consider Moebius rigidity for hypersurfaces and deformations of a hypersurface preserving the Moebius metric in the high dimensional case n>3. When the highest multiplicity of principal curvatures is less than n-2, the hypersurface is Moebius rigid. Deformable hypersurfaces and the possible deformations are also classified completely. In addition, we establish a Reduction Theorem …
Using the notion of Levi form of a smooth distribution, we discuss the local and the global problem of existence of one horizontal section of a smooth vector bundle endowed with a horizontal distribution. The analysis will lead to the formulation of a "one-leaf" analogue of the classical Frobenius integrability theorem in elementary differential geometry. Several applications of the result will be discussed. First, we will give a characterization of symmetric connections arising as Levi-Civita connections of semi-Riemannian metric tensors. Second, we will prove a general version of the classic…
The stable reduction theorem says that a family of curves of genus $g\geq 2$ over a punctured curve can be uniquely completed (after possible base change) by inserting certain stable curves at the punctures. We give a new proof of this result for curves defined over $\mathbb{C}$ using the Kähler-Einstein metrics on the fibers to obtain the limiting stable curves at the punctures.
Let $Y$ be a closed $3$-manifold such that all flat $SU(2)$-connections on $Y$ are $non$-$degenerate$. In this article, we prove a Uhlenbeck-type compactness theorem on $Y$ for stable flat $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ connections satisfying an $L^{2}$-bound for the real curvature. Combining the compactness theorem and a previous result in \cite{Huang}, we prove that the moduli space of the stable flat $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ connections is disconnected under certain technical assumptions.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the Palais-Smale Condition C to hold for the Yang-Mills functional for invariant connections on a principal bundle over a compact manifold of any dimension. It is assumed that the connections are invariant under the action of a compact Lie group on the manifold, and that all orbits of the action have codimension three or less.
KT-geometry is the geometry of a Hermitian connection whose torsion is a 3-form. HKT-geometry is the geometry of a hyper-Hermitian connection whose torsion is a 3-form. We identify non-trivial conditions for a reduction theory for these types of geometry.
Motivated by the study of a certain family of classical geometric problems we investigate the existence of multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids. We show that one can always deform a given connection which is only approximately multiplicative into a genuinely multiplicative connection. The proof of this fact that we present here relies on a recursive averaging technique. As an application we point out that the study of multiplicative connections on general proper Lie groupoids reduces to the study of longitudinal representations of regular groupoids. We regard our results as a pre…
We examine the local super trace asymptotics for the de Rham complex defined by an arbitrary super connection on the exterior algebra. We show, in contrast to the situation in which the connection in question is the Levi-Civita connection, that these invariants are generically non-zero in positive degree and that the critical term is not the Pfaffian.
We establish normal form theorems for a large class of singular flat connections on complex manifolds, including connections with logarithmic poles along weighted homogeneous Saito free divisors. As a result, we show that the moduli spaces of such connections admit the structure of algebraic quotient stacks. In order to prove these results, we introduce homogeneous Lie groupoids and study their representation theory. In this direction, we prove two main results: a Jordan-Chevalley decomposition theorem, and a linearization theorem. We give explicit normal forms for several examples of free div…
A manifold with an arbitrary affine connection is considered and the geodesic spray associated with the connection is studied in the presence of a Lie group action. In particular, results are obtained that provide insight into the structure of the reduced dynamics associated with the given invariant affine connection. The geometry of the frame bundle of the given manifold is used to provide an intrinsic description of the geodesic spray. A fundamental relationship between the geodesic spray, the tangent lift and the vertical lift of the symmetric product is obtained, which provides a key to un…
We extend the Jang equation proof of the positive energy theorem due to R. Schoen and S.-T. Yau from dimension $n=3$ to dimensions $3 \leq n <8$. This requires us to address several technical difficulties that are not present when $n=3$. The regularity and decay assumptions for the initial data sets to which our argument applies are weaker than those of R. Schoen and S.-T. Yau. In recent joint work with L.-H. Huang, D. Lee, and R. Schoen we have given a different proof of the full positive mass theorem in dimensions $3 \leq n < 8$. We pointed out that this theorem can alternatively be derived …
The imploded cross-section of a symplectic manifold is a stratified space allowing for an abelianization of its symplectic reduction. After recalling symplectic and Poisson reduction and reviewing the basics of symplectic implosion, we prove a cross-section theorem for Poisson manifolds, generalizing the Guillemin-Sternberg theorem for symplectic manifolds, which constitutes a first step towards Poisson implosion. On our way, we find and fix a mistake in the proof of Guillemin-Sternberg's theorem, and we identify Poisson transversals as the right analogue to symplectic submanifolds in this con…
We investigate the reduction process of a k-symplectic field theory whose Lagrangian is invariant under a symmetry group. We give explicit coordinate expressions of the resulting reduced partial differential equations, the so-called Lagrange-Poincare field equations. We discuss two issues about reconstructing a solution from a given solution of the reduced equations. The first one is an interpretation of the integrability conditions, in terms of the curvatures of some connections. The second includes the introduction of the concept of a k-connection to provide a reconstruction method. We show …
The use of certain critical-exponent Sobolev norms is an important feature of methods employed by Taubes to solve the anti-self-dual and similar non-linear elliptic partial differential equations. Indeed, the estimates one can obtain using these critical-exponent norms appear to be the best possible when one needs to bound the norm of a Green's operator for a Laplacian, depending on a connection varying in a non-compact family, in terms of minimal data such as the first positive eigenvalue of the Laplacian or the L^2 norm of the curvature of the connection. Following Taubes, we describe a coll…
Let $(X,x_0)$ be any one--pointed compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g\geq 3$. Fix two mutually coprime integers $r>1$ and $d$. Let ${\mathcal M}_X$ denote the moduli space parametrizing all logarithmic $\text{SL}(r,{\mathbb C})$--connections, singular over $x_0$, on vector bundles over $X$ of degree $d$. We prove that the isomorphism class of the variety ${\mathcal M}_X$ determines the Riemann surface $X$ uniquely up to an isomorphism, although the biholomorphism class of ${\mathcal M}_X$ is known to be independent of the complex structure of $X$. The isomorphism class of t…
Let $M$ be a compact connected complex manifold and $G$ a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group. Let $E_G$ be a holomorphic principal $G$--bundle over $M$ and $T\, \subset\, G$ a torus containing the connected component of the center of $G$. Let $N$ (respectively, $C$) be the normalizer (respectively, centralizer) of $T$ in $G$, and let $W$ be the Weyl group $N/C$ for $T$. We prove that there is a natural bijective correspondence between the following two: Torus subbundles $\mathbb T$ of ${\rm Ad}(E_G)$ such that for some (hence every) $x\, \in\, M$, the fiber ${\mathbb T}_x$ lies…
Braverman and Kappeler introduced a refinement of the Ray-Singer analytic torsion associated to a flat vector bundle over a closed odd-dimensional manifold. We study this notion and improve the Braverman-Kappeler theorem comparing the refined analytic torsion with Farber-Turaev refinement of the combinatorial torsion. Using this result we establish, modulo sign, the Burghelea-Haller conjecture, comparing their complex analytic torsion with Farber-Turaev torsion in the case, when the flat connection can be deformed in the space of flat connections to a Hermitian connection. We also compute the …
We show how to define Riemannian metrics and connections on a noncommutative torus in such a way that an analogue of Levi-Civita's theorem on the existence and uniqueness of a Riemannian connection holds. The major novelty is that we need to use two different notions of noncommutative vector field. Levi-Civita's theorem makes it possible to define Riemannian curvature using the usual formulas.
The geometry of nonholonomic bundle gerbes, provided with nonlinear connection structure, and nonholonomic gerbe modules is elaborated as the theory of Clifford modules on nonholonomic manifolds which positively fail to be spin. We explore an approach to such nonholonomic Dirac operators and derive the related Atiyah-Singer index formulas. There are considered certain applications in modern gravity and geometric mechanics of such Clifford-Lagrange/ Finsler gerbes and their realizations as nonholonomic Clifford and Riemann-Cartan modules.
Given a principal bundle on an orientable closed surface with compact connected structure group, we endow the space of based gauge equivalence classes of smooth connections relative to smooth based gauge transformations with the structure of a Fréchet manifold. Using Wilson loop holonomies and a certain characteristic class determined by the topology of the bundle, we then impose suitable constraints on that Fréchet manifold that single out the based gauge equivalence classes of central Yang-Mills connections but do not directly involve the Yang-Mills equation. We also explain how our theory y…
We consider a parabolic-like systems of differential equations involving geometrical quantities to examine uniformization theorems for two- and three-dimensional closed orientable manifolds. We find that in the two-dimensional case there is a simple gauge theoretic flow for a connection built from a Riemannian structure, and that the convergence of the flow to the fixed points is consistent with the Poincare Uniformization Theorem. We construct a similar system for the three-dimensional case. Here the connection is built from a Riemannian geometry, an SO(3) connection and two other 1-form fiel…
