Braverman and Kappeler introduced a refinement of the Ray-Singer analytic torsion associated to a flat vector bundle over a closed odd-dimensional manifold. We study this notion and improve the Braverman-Kappeler theorem comparing the refined analytic torsion with Farber-Turaev refinement of the combinatorial torsion. Using this result we establish, modulo sign, the Burghelea-Haller conjecture, comparing their complex analytic torsion with Farber-Turaev torsion in the case, when the flat connection can be deformed in the space of flat connections to a Hermitian connection. We also compute the refined analytic torsion of lens spaces.

In the previous article "Refined Analytic Torsion on Manifolds with Boundary" we have presented a construction of refined analytic torsion in the spirit of Braverman and Kappeler, which does apply to compact manifolds with and without boundary. We now derive a gluing formula for our construction, which can be viewed as a gluing law for the original definition of refined analytic torsion by Braverman and Kappeler. We construct a canonical element, called the refined analytic torsion, of the determinant line of the cohomology of a closed oriented odd-dimensional manifold M with coefficients in a flat complex vector bundle E. We compute the Ray-Singer norm of the refined analytic torsion. In particular, if there exists a flat Hermitian metric on E, we show that this norm is equal to 1. We prove a duality theorem, establishing a relationship between the refined analytic torsions corresponding to a flat connection and its dual.
Inspired by the work of Boris Vertman on refined analytic torsion for manifolds with boundary, in this paper we extend the construction of the Cappell-Miller analytic torsion to manifolds with boundary. We also compare it with the refined analytic torsion on manifolds with boundary. As a byproduct of the gluing formula for refined analytic torsion and the comparison theorem for the Cappell-Miller analytic torsion and the refined analytic torsion, we establish the gluing formula for the Cappell-Miller analytic torsion in the case that the Hermitian metric is flat.
We show that the refined analytic torsion is a holomorphic section of the determinant line bundle over the space of complex representations of the fundamental group of a closed oriented odd dimensional manifold. Further, we calculate the ratio of the refined analytic torsion and the Farber-Turaev combinatorial torsion. As an application, we establish a formula relating the eta-invariant and the phase of the Farber-Turaev torsion, which extends a theorem of Farber and earlier results of ours. This formula allows to study the spectral flow using methods of combinatorial topology.

In this paper we discuss the refined analytic torsion on an odd dimensional compact oriented Riemannian manifold with boundary under some assumption. For this purpose we introduce two boundary conditions which are complementary to each other and well-posed for the odd signature operator $\mathcal{B}$ in the sense of Seeley. We then show that the zeta-determinants of $\mathcal{B}^2$ and eta-invariants of $\mathcal{B}$ subject to these boundary conditions are well defined by using the method of the asymptotic expansions of the traces of the heat kernels. We prove that refined analytic torsion on a manifold with boundary is an analytic section of the determinant line bundle over the representation variety. As a fundamental application we establish a gluing formula for refined analytic torsion on connected components of the complex representation space which contain a unitary point. Finally we provide a new proof of Bruening-Ma gluing formula for the Ray-Singer torsion associated to a non-Hermitian connection. Our proof is quite different from the one given by Bruening and Ma and uses a temporal gauge transformation.
The refined analytic torsion associated to a flat vector bundle over a closed odd-dimensional manifold canonically defines a quadratic form $τ$ on the determinant line of the cohomology. Both $τ$ and the Burghelea-Haller torsion are refinements of the Ray-Singer torsion. We show that whenever the Burghelea-Haller torsion is defined it is equal to $\pmτ$. As an application we obtain new results about the Burghelea-Haller torsion. In particular, we prove a weak version of the Burghelea-Haller conjecture relating their torsion with the square of the Farber-Turaev combinatorial torsion.

In this paper we establish a comparison formula of the absolute and relative real analytic torsion forms over fibrations with boundaries. The key tool is a gluing formula of analytic torsion forms proved by M. Puchol, Y. Zhang and the author. As a consequence of the comparison formula, we prove another version of the gluing formula of the analytic torsion forms conjectured originally by the author.
We introduce multi-torsion, a spectral invariant generalizing Ray-Singer analytic torsion. We define multi-torsion for compact manifolds with a certain local geometric product structure that gives a bigrading on differential forms. We prove that multi-torsion is metric-independent in a suitable sense. Our definition of multi-torsion is inspired by an interpretation of each of analytic torsion and the eta invariant as a regularized integral of a closed differential form on a space of metrics on a vector bundle or on a space of elliptic operators. We prove that for certain sequences of hyperbolic three--manifolds with cusps which converge to hyperbolic three--space in a weak ("Benjamini-Schramm") sense and certain coefficient systems the regularized analytic torsion approximates the $L^2$-torsion of the universal cover under an additional hypothesis. We also prove an asymptotic equality between the former and some Reidemeister torsion of the truncated manifolds.

On an odd-dimensional oriented hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with strongly acyclic coefficient systems, we derive a formula relating analytic torsion with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification of the manifold. In a companion paper, this formula is used to derive exponential growth of torsion in cohomology of arithmetic groups.
For a non-compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with cusps we prove an explicit formula that relates the regularized analytic torsion associated to the even symmetric powers of the standard representation of SL_2(C) to the corresponding Reidemeister torsion. We first apply the method and results in the previous paper to give a new proof of a result (hold in $ {\bf C}/{\bf Z}$) of Gilkey on the variation of h-invariants associated to non self-adjoint Dirac type operators. We then give an explicit local expression of certain h-invariant appearing in recent papers of Braverman-Kappeler on what they call refined analytic torsion, and propose an alternate formulation of their definition of the refined analytic torsion. A refinement in ${\bf C}$ of the above variation formula is also proposed.

We study the Reidemeister torsion and the analytic torsion of the $m$ dimensional disc in the Euclidean $m$ dimensional space, using the base for the homology defined by Ray and Singer in \cite{RS}. We prove that the Reidemeister torsion coincides with a power of the volume of the disc. We study the additional terms arising in the analytic torsion due to the boundary, using generalizations of the Cheeger-Müller theorem. In this paper we show that the Ray-Singer complex analytic torsion is trivial for even dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds. Then we define the quaternionic analytic torsion for quaternionic manifolds and prove that they are metric independent. In dimension four, the quaternionic analytic torsion equals to the self-dual analytic torsion. For higher dimensional manifolds, the self-dual analytic torsion is a conformal invariant.
In this paper, we establish an equality between the analytic torsion introduced by Dar\cite{MR876230} and the orbifold analytic torsion defined by Ma \cite{MR2140438} on a compact manifold with isolated conical singularities which in addition has an orbifold structure. We assume the orbifold flat vector bundle is an honest vector bundle, although the metric on the flat bundle may not be flat.
We prove a formula relating the analytic torsion and Reidemeister torsion on manifolds with boundary in the general case when the metric is not necessarily a product near the boundary. The product case has been established by W. Luck and S. M. Vishik. We find that the extra term that comes in here in the nonproduct case is the transgression of the Euler class in the even dimensional case and a slightly more mysterious term involving the second fundamental form of the boundary and the curvature tensor of the manifold in the odd dimensional case.
For a complex flat vector bundle over a fibered manifold, we consider the 1-parameter family of certain deformed sub-signature operators introduced by Ma-Zhang. We compute the adiabatic limit of the Bismut-Freed connection associated to this family and show that the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion form shows up naturally under this procedure.
Using the higher analytic torsion form of Bismut and Lott we construct a characteristic class for smooth sphere bundles. We calculate this class in the case where the sphere bundle comes from a complex vector bundle. Related to these characteristic classes we define nontrivial continuous group cohomology classes of the diffeomorphism group of odd dimensional spheres.
We study the analytic torsion of the cone over an orientable odd dimensional compact connected Riemannian manifold W. We prove that the logarithm of the analytic torsion of the cone decomposes as the sum of the logarithm of the root of the analytic torsion of the boundary of the cone, plus a topological term, plus a further term that is a rational linear combination of local Riemannian invariants of the boundary. We study the analytic torsion of odd-dimensional hyperbolic orbifolds $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^{2n+1}$, depending on a representation of $Γ$. Our main goal is to understand the asymptotic behavior of the analytic torsion with respect to sequences of representations associated to rays of highest weights.
We prove the equality of the analytic torsion and the value at zero of a Ruelle dynamical zeta function associated with an acyclic unitarily flat vector bundle on a closed locally symmetric reductive manifold. This solves a conjecture of Fried. This article should be read in conjunction with an earlier paper by Moscovici and Stanton.
For a compact manifold, which has a part isometric to a cylinder of finite length, we consider an adiabatic limit procedure, in which the length of the cylinder tends to infinity. We study the asymptotic of the spectrum of Hodge-Laplacian and the asymptotic of the $L^2$-metric on de Rham cohomology. As an application, we give a pure analytic proof of the gluing formula for analytic torsion.
We prove the smoothness of the L^2-analytic torsion form on some fiber bundles with non-compact fibers of positive Novikov-Shubin invariant. We do so by generalizing the arguments of Azzali-Goette-Schick to an appropriate Sobolev space, and proving that the Novikov-Shubin invariant remains positive in the Sobolev settings, using an argument of Alvarez Lopez-Kordyukov.

Given a fiber bundle with closed connected fibers, and a family of separating hypersurfaces, we study the behavior of the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion form, and the eta form for a duality bundle, under analytic surgery in the sense of Hassell, Mazzeo and Melrose. We define an (equivariant) quaternionic analytic torsion for antiselfdual vector bundles on quaternionic Kaehler manifolds, using ideas by Leung and Yi. We compute this torsion for vector bundles on quaternionic homogeneous spaces with respect to any isometry in the component of the identity, in terms of roots and Weyl groups.
For a closed Riemannian manifold we extend the definition of analytic and Reidemeister torsion associated to an orthogonal representation of fundamental group on a Hilbert module of finite type over a finite von Neumann algebra. If the representation is of determinant class we prove, generalizing the Cheeger-Müller theorem, that the analytic and Reidemeister torsion are equal. In particular, this proves the conjecture that for closed Riemannian manifolds with positive Novikov-Shubin invariants, the L2 analytic and Reidemeister torsions are equal.
We propose a definition for analytic torsion of the Rumin complex on contact manifolds. This is given by the derivative at zero of a well-chosen combination of zeta functions of a fourth-order modified Rumin Laplacian. The regular value at zero (before differentiation) of this well-chosen combination of zeta functions is shown to be a contact invariant. The variation of our analytic torsion is given as the integral of local terms, together with a global term coming from the null-space of the Laplacian.

We give an explicit formula for the $L^2$ analytic torsion of the finite metric cone over an oriented compact connected Riemannian manifold. We provide an interpretation of the different factors appearing in this formula. We prove that the analytic torsion of the cone is the finite part of the limit obtained collapsing one of the boundaries, of the ratio of the analytic torsion of the frustum to a regularising factor. We show that the regularising factor comes from the set of the non square integrable eigenfunctions of the Laplace Beltrami operator on the cone.
We propose a definition for analytic torsion of the contact complex on contact manifolds. We show it coincides with Ray-Singer torsion on any 3-dimensional CR Seifert manifold equipped with a unitary representation. In this particular case we compute it and relate it to dynamical properties of the Reeb flow. In fact the whole spectral torsion function we consider may be interpreted on CR Seifert manifolds as a purely dynamical function through Selberg-type trace formulae.
We study an analogue of the analytic torsion for elliptic complexes that are graded by $\mathbb{Z}_2$, orignally constructed by Mathai and Wu. Motivated by topological T-duality, Bouwknegt an Mathai study the complex of forms on an odd-dimensional manifold equipped with with the twisted differential $d_H = d+H$, where $H$ is a closed odd-dimensional form. To this end, we propose an axiomatic definition and give a classification of the theories of generalized holomorphic analytic torsion classes for arbitrary projective morphisms.
