An appeal to a bound on the p-part of the component group has been corrected, with a corresponding change to the function "F". We also took the opportunity to spell out the general bound more explicitly and to discuss related work of X. Xarles. Still 16 pages
We give a function F(d,n,p) such that if K/Q_p is a degree n field extension and A/K is a d-dimensional abelian variety with potentially good reduction, then #A(K)[tors] is at most F(d,n,p). Separate attention is given to the prime-to-p torsion and to the case of purely additive reduction. These latter bounds are applied to classify rational torsion on CM elliptic curves over number fields of degree at most 3, on elliptic curves over Q with integral j (recovering a theorem of Frey), and on abelian surfaces over Q with integral moduli. In the last case, our efforts leave us with 11 numbers which may, or may not, arise as the order of the full torsion subgroup. The largest such number is 72.
We prove that torsion codimension 2 algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on supersingular abelian varieties are algebraically equivalent to zero. As a consequence, we prove that homological equivalence coincides with algebraic equivalence for algebraic cycles of codimension 2 on supersingular abelian varieties over the algebraic closure of finite fields.
We give a uniform bound on the degree of the maximal torsion cosets for subvarieties of an abelian variety. The proof combines algebraic interpolation and a theorem of Serre on homotheties in the Galois representation associated to the torsion subgroup of an abelian variety.
There are many equivalent ways to describe the p-torsion of a principally polarized abelian variety in characteristic p. We briefly explain these methods and then illustrate them for abelian varieties A of arbitrary dimension g in several important cases, including when A has p-rank f and a-number 1 and when A has p-rank f and a-number g-f. We provide complete tables for abelian varieties of dimension up to four.
This paper surveys some applications of moduli theory to issues concerning the distribution of rational points on algebraic varieties. It will appear on the proceedings of the Fano Conference.
In 1983 Silverman and Tate showed that the set of points in a 1-dimensional family of abelian varieties where a section of infinite order has `small height' is finite. We conjecture a generalisation to higher-dimensional families, where we replace `finite' by `not Zariski dense'. We show that this conjecture would imply the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture for torsion points on abelian varieties. We then prove a few special cases of this new conjecture.
It is a short report for the ICCM2019 Proceedings on recent results obtained with Michael Groechenig and Moritz Kerz concerning special subloci of the Betti moduli space of irreducible complex local systems on complex varieties.
We consider the distribution of p-power group schemes among the torsion of abelian varieties over finite fields of characteristic p, as follows. Fix natural numbers g and n, and let $ξ$ be a non-supersingular principally quasipolarized Barsotti-Tate group of level n. We classify the F_q-rational forms $ξ^α$ of $ξ$. Among all principally polarized abelian varieties X/F_q of dimension g with p^n-torsion geometrically isomorphic to ξ, we compute the frequency with which X[p^n] is isomorphic to $ξ^α$. The error in our estimate is bounded by $D/\sqrt{q}$ where D depends on g, n and p, but not on $ξ…
We show how to calculate the Euler characteristic of a local system associated to an irreducible representation of the symplectic group of genus 3 on the moduli space of curves of genus 3 and the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension 3.
We give a formula for the Eisenstein cohomology of local systems on the partial compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties given by rank 1 degenerations. For genus 2 we give a formula for the full Eisenstein cohomology.
We consider principally polarized abelian varieties with quaternionic multiplication over number fields and we study the field of moduli of their endomorphisms in relation to the set of rational points on suitable Shimura varieties.
We study moduli spaces of O'Grady's ten-dimensional irreducible symplectic manifolds. These moduli spaces are covers of modular varieties of dimension 21, namely quotients of hermitian symmetric domains by a suitable arithmetic group. The interesting and new aspect of this case is that the group in question is strictly bigger than the stable orthogonal group. This makes it different from both the K3 and the K3^[n] case, which are of dimension 19 and 20 respectively.
We prove a finiteness theorem for the first flat cohomology group of finite flat group schemes over integral normal proper varieties over finite fields. As a consequence, we can prove the invariance of the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of Abelian schemes over higher dimensional bases under isogenies and alterations over/of such bases for the $p$-part. Along the way, we generalize previous results on the Tate-Shafarevich group in this situation.
In this paper we prove the Geyer-Jarden conjecture on the torsion part of the Mordell-Weil group for a large class of abelian varieties defined over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. The class consists of all abelian varieties with big monodromy, i.e., such that the image of Galois representation on l-torsion points, for almost all primes l, contains the full symplectic group.
We formulate and study a torsion analogue of the weight-monodromy conjecture for a proper smooth scheme over a non-archimedean local field. We prove it for proper smooth schemes over equal characteristic non-archimedean local fields, abelian varieties, surfaces, varieties uniformized by Drinfeld upper half spaces, and set-theoretic complete intersections in toric varieties. In the equal characteristic case, our methods rely on an ultraproduct variant of Weil II established by Cadoret.
Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be a discrete valuation ring with fraction field $K$ of characteristic $0$ and algebraically closed residue field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $A/K$ be an abelian variety of dimension $g$ with a $K$-rational point of order $p$. In this article, we are interested in the reduction properties that $A/K$ can have. After discussing the general case, we specialize to $g=1$, and we study the possible Kodaira types that can occur.
In this paper, we study a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa, on the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of abelian varieties with constrained prime power torsion. Our result is related with abelian varieties which have complex multiplication over their fields of definition.
Investigating a conjecture of Zannier, we study irreducible subvarieties of abelian schemes that dominate the base and contain a Zariski dense set of torsion points that lie on pairwise isogenous fibers. If everything is defined over the algebraic numbers and the abelian scheme has maximal variation, we prove that the geometric generic fiber of such a subvariety is a union of torsion cosets. We go on to prove fully or partially explicit versions of this result in fibered powers of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Finally, we apply a recent result of Galateau-Martínez to obtain uniform b…
The geometric torsion conjecture asserts that the torsion part of the Mordell--Weil group of a family of abelian varieties over a complex quasiprojective curve is uniformly bounded in terms of the genus of the curve. We prove the conjecture for abelian varieties with real multiplication, uniformly in the field of multiplication. Fixing the field, we furthermore show that the torsion is bounded in terms of the $\mathit{gonality}$ of the base curve, which is the closer analog of the arithmetic conjecture. The proof is a hybrid technique employing both the hyperbolic and algebraic geometry of the…
This note discusses some examples showing that the crystalline cohomology of even very mildly singular projective varieties tends to be quite large. In particular, any singular projective variety with at worst ordinary double points has infinitely generated crystalline cohomology in at least two cohomological degrees. These calculations rely critically on comparisons between crystalline and derived de Rham cohomology.
If A is an abelian variety over a number field K, and L is a (possibly infinite) extension of K generated by torsion points of A, then the quotient of A(L) by its torsion subgroup is a free abelian group.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. The number of torsion points that are rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$ of $L$ over $K$. Under the following three conditions, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound, in terms of the dimension of abelian subvarieties and their endomorphism rings. The three hypothesis are the following: $(1)$ $A$ is geometrically isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I, II or III, according to the Albert classification; $(2)$ $A$ is of "Lefschetz type", that is, t…
A particular case of Bergeron-Venkatesh's conjecture predicts that torsion classes in the cohomology of Shimura varieties are rather rare. According to this and for Kottwitz-Harris-Taylor type of Shimura varieties, we first associate to each such torsion class an infinity of irreducible automorphic representations in characteristic zero, which are pairwise non isomorphic and weakly congruent. Then, using completed cohomology, we construct torsion classes in regular weight and then deduce explicit examples of such automorphic congruences.
We show that, for an abelian variety defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ which has potential good reduction, its torsion subgroup with values in the composite field of $K$ and a certain Lubin-Tate extension over a $p$-adic field is finite.
We introduce a method for producing congruences between Hecke eigenclasses, possibly torsion, in the coherent cohomology of automorphic vector bundles on certain good reduction Shimura varieties. The congruences are produced using some "generalized Hasse invariants" adapted to the Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the special fiber.
Using properties of the Frobenius eigenvalues, we show that, in a precise sense, ``most'' isomorphism classes of (principally polarized) simple abelian varieties over a finite field are characterized up to isogeny by the sequence of their division fields, and a similar result for ``most'' isogeny classes. Some global cases are also treated.
Let $F$ be a totally real number field and let $p$ be a prime unramified in $F$. We prove the existence of Galois pseudo-representations attached to mod $p^m$ Hecke eigenclasses of paritious weight occurring in the coherent cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties for $F$ of level prime to $p$.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K and let Kab be the maximal abelian extension of K. We show that there only finitely many torsion points of A which are defined over Kab iff A has no abelian subvariety with complex multiplication over K. We use this to give another proof of Ribet's result that A has only finitely many torsion points which are defined over the cyclotomic extension of K.
For moduli of polarized smooth K-trivial a.k.a., Calabi-Yau varieties in a general sense, we revisit a classical problem of constructing its "weak K-moduli" compactifications which parametrizes K-semistable (i.e., semi-log-canonical K-trivial) degenerations. Although weak K-moduli is not unique in general, they always contain a unique partial compactification (K-moduli). Our main theorem is the log minimality of their normalizations, under some conditions. Partially to confirm that known examples satisfy the conditions, we also include an appendix on the algebro-geometric reconstruction of Kul…
We prove that the cohomology of the moduli space of morphisms of a fixed finite degree from a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$ to a complete simplicial toric variety $\mathbb{P}(Σ)$, denoted by the rational polyhedral fan $Σ$, stabilizes. As an arithmetic consequence we obtain a resolution of the Batyrev-Manin conjecture for toric varieties over global function fields in all but finitely many characteristics.
Let $D$ be an odd square-free positive integer and $C$ a divisor of $D$. For any quadratic character $χ$ modulo $C$, we prove that the $χ$-part of the group $J_0(DC)_\text{tor}$ of torsion points of $J_0(DC)$ coincides with the $χ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup, away from those primes of bad reduction or where possible congruences between oldforms and newforms occur.
The Torsion Anomalous Conjecture (TAC) states that a subvariety V of an abelian variety A has only finitely many maximal torsion anomalous subvarieties. In this work we prove, with an effective method, some cases of the TAC when the ambient variety A has CM, generalising our previous results in products of CM elliptic curves. When V is a curve, we give new results and we deduce some implications on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture.
Anderson introduced a $p$-adic version of soliton theory. He then applied it to the Jacobian variety of a cyclic quotient of a Fermat curve and showed that torsion points of certain prime order lay outside of the theta divisor. In this paper, we evolve his theory further. As an application, we get a stronger result on the intersection of the theta divisor and torsion points on the Jacobian variety for more general curves. New examples are discussed as well. A key new ingredient is a map connecting the $p$-adic loop group and the formal group.
Let A be an abelian variety of positive dimension defined over a number field K and let Kbar be a fixed algebraic closure of K. For each element sigma of the absolute Galois group Gal(Kbar/K), let Kbar(sigma) be the fixed field of sigma in Kbar. We shall prove that the torsion subgroup of A(Kbar(sigma)) is infinite for all sigma in Gal(Kbar/K) outside of some set of Haar measure zero. This proves the number field case of a conjecture of Geyer and Jarden from 1978.
For any degenerating Calabi-Yau family, we introduce new limit space which we call galaxy, whose dense subspace is the disjoint union of countably infinite open Calabi-Yau varieties, parametrized by the rational points of the Kontsevich-Soibelman's essential skeleton, while dominated by the Huber adification over the Puiseux series field. Other topics include: projective limits of toroidal compactifications, locally modelled on what we call the limit toric varieties, the way to attach tropicalized family to given Calabi-Yau family, which are weakly related to each other.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $M$ the extension field of a $p$-adic field $K$ obtained by adjoining all $p$-power roots of all elements of $K$. In this paper, we show that there exists a constant $C$, depending only on $K$ and an integer $g>0$, which satisfies the following property:If $A_{/K}$ is a $g$-dimensional CM abelian variety, then the order of the torsion subgroup of $A(M)$ is bounded by $C$.
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $k$ be a number field. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $k$. We prove that if $p$ is odd, then the local-global divisibility by any power of $p$ holds for the torsion points of $E$. We also show with an example that the hypothesis over $p$ is necessary. We get a weak generalization of the result on elliptic curves to the larger family of ${\rm GL}_2$-type varieties over $k$. In the special case of the abelian surfaces $A/k$ with quaternionic multiplication over $k$ we obtain that for all prime $p$, except a finite number depending on $A$, the local-gl…
Let $K$ be a number field. We present several new finiteness results for isomorphism classes of abelian varieties over $K$ whose $\ell$-power torsion fields are arithmetically constrained for some rational prime $\ell$. Such arithmetic constraints are related to an unresolved question of Ihara regarding the kernel of the canonical outer Galois representation on the pro-$\ell$ fundamental group of $P^1 - \{0,1,\infty\}$. Under GRH, we demonstrate the set of classes is finite for any fixed $K$ and any fixed dimension. Without GRH, we prove a semistable version of the result. In addition, several…
In this paper we make an initial study on type D moduli spaces in positive characteristic $p\neq 2$, where we allow $p$ ramified in the definite quaternion algebra. We classify the isogeny classes of $p$-divisible groups with additional structures in question. We also study the reduction of the type $D$ moduli spaces of minimal rank.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a $p$-adic field $K$ and $L$ an algebraic infinite extension over $K$. We consider the finiteness of the torsion part of the group of rational points $A(L)$ under some assumptions. In 1975, Hideo Imai proved that such a group is finite if $A$ has good reduction and $L$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this talk, first we show a generalization of Imai's result in the case where $A$ has ordinary good reduction. Next we give some finiteness results when $A$ is an elliptic curve and $L$ is the field generated by the $p$-power torsion of an el…
We study the moduli surface for pairs of elliptic curves together with an isomorphism between their N-torsion groups. The Weil pairing gives a "determinant" map from this moduli surface to (Z/NZ)*; its fibers are the components of the surface. We define spaces of modular forms on these components and Hecke correspondences between them, and study how those spaces of modular forms behave as modules for the Hecke algebra. We discover that the component with determinant -1 is somehow the "dominant" one; we characterize the difference between its spaces of modular forms and the spaces of modular fo…
We formulate the notion of \emph{typical boundedness} of torsion on a family of abelian varieties defined over number fields. This means that the torsion subgroups of elements in the family can be made uniformly bounded by removing from the family all abelian varieties defined over number fields of degree lying in a set of arbitrarily small density. We show that for each fixed $g$, torsion is typically bounded on the family of all $g$-dimensional CM abelian varieties. We show that torsion is \emph{not} typically bounded on the family of all elliptic curves, and we establish results -- some unc…
The torsion anomalous conjecture states that for any variety V in an abelian variety there are only finitely many maximal V-torsion anomalous varieties. We prove this conjecture for V of codimension 2 in a product E^N of any elliptic curve E. This was known only when E has CM. We also give an effective upper bound for the normalized height of these maximal V-torsion anomalous varieties.
