The geometric torsion conjecture asserts that the torsion part of the Mordell--Weil group of a family of abelian varieties over a complex quasiprojective curve is uniformly bounded in terms of the genus of the curve. We prove the conjecture for abelian varieties with real multiplication, uniformly in the field of multiplication. Fixing the field, we furthermore show that the torsion is bounded in terms of the $\mathit{gonality}$ of the base curve, which is the closer analog of the arithmetic conjecture. The proof is a hybrid technique employing both the hyperbolic and algebraic geometry of the toroidal compactifications of the Hilbert modular varieties $\overline X(1)$ parametrizing such abelian varieties. We show that only finitely many torsion covers $\overline X_1(\mathfrak{n})$ contain $d$-gonal curves outside of the boundary for any fixed $d$. We further show the same is true for entire curves $\mathbb{C}\rightarrow \overline X_1(\mathfrak{n})$.
This article is a contribution to the project of classifying the torsion growth of elliptic curve upon base-change. In this article we treat the case of elliptic curve defined over the rationals with complex multiplication. For this particular case, we give a description of the possible torsion growth over cubic fields and a completely explicit description of this growth in terms of some invariants attached to a given elliptic curve.
In a series of papers we classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves base-extended to number fields of a fixed degree. In this paper we turn our attention to the question of how the torsion of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over the rationals grows over quadratic fields. We go further and we give an explicit characterization of the quadratic fields where the torsion grows in terms of some invariants attached to the curve.
We consider principally polarized abelian varieties with quaternionic multiplication over number fields and we study the field of moduli of their endomorphisms in relation to the set of rational points on suitable Shimura varieties.
We prove that torsion codimension 2 algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on supersingular abelian varieties are algebraically equivalent to zero. As a consequence, we prove that homological equivalence coincides with algebraic equivalence for algebraic cycles of codimension 2 on supersingular abelian varieties over the algebraic closure of finite fields.
We show how non-vanishing of p-adic L functions controls the dimensions of Selmer varieties associated to the complement of the origin in an elliptic curve with CM. As a corollary, one obtains a π_1-proof of the theorem of Siegel for such curves.
We give a uniform bound on the degree of the maximal torsion cosets for subvarieties of an abelian variety. The proof combines algebraic interpolation and a theorem of Serre on homotheties in the Galois representation associated to the torsion subgroup of an abelian variety.
In this paper we study abelian varieties which correspond to CM points in the coarse moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties with multiplication by a maximal order in a quaternion algebra over a totally real number field. These are abelian varieties of even dimension with quaternion and complex multiplication. We describe them explicitly via isogenies to products of abelian varieties of smaller dimension together with estimates on the degree of the isogeny.
There are many equivalent ways to describe the p-torsion of a principally polarized abelian variety in characteristic p. We briefly explain these methods and then illustrate them for abelian varieties A of arbitrary dimension g in several important cases, including when A has p-rank f and a-number 1 and when A has p-rank f and a-number g-f. We provide complete tables for abelian varieties of dimension up to four.
In 1983 Silverman and Tate showed that the set of points in a 1-dimensional family of abelian varieties where a section of infinite order has `small height' is finite. We conjecture a generalisation to higher-dimensional families, where we replace `finite' by `not Zariski dense'. We show that this conjecture would imply the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture for torsion points on abelian varieties. We then prove a few special cases of this new conjecture.
We use multiplication maps to give a characteristic-free approach to vanishing theorems on toric varieties. Our approach is very elementary but is enough powerful to prove vanishing theorems.
We consider the distribution of p-power group schemes among the torsion of abelian varieties over finite fields of characteristic p, as follows. Fix natural numbers g and n, and let $ξ$ be a non-supersingular principally quasipolarized Barsotti-Tate group of level n. We classify the F_q-rational forms $ξ^α$ of $ξ$. Among all principally polarized abelian varieties X/F_q of dimension g with p^n-torsion geometrically isomorphic to ξ, we compute the frequency with which X[p^n] is isomorphic to $ξ^α$. The error in our estimate is bounded by $D/\sqrt{q}$ where D depends on g, n and p, but not on $ξ…
In this paper we prove the Geyer-Jarden conjecture on the torsion part of the Mordell-Weil group for a large class of abelian varieties defined over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. The class consists of all abelian varieties with big monodromy, i.e., such that the image of Galois representation on l-torsion points, for almost all primes l, contains the full symplectic group.
We prove that the torsion points of an abelian variety are equidistributed over the corresponding berkovich space with respect to the canonical measure.
We give bounds on the order of torsion in the Chow group of zero dimensional cycles for isotropic Grassmannians and Brauer-Severi flag varieties. To do this, we introduce tools to understand the behavior of torsion in Chow groups with coefficients under morphisms of proper varieties
This note discusses some examples showing that the crystalline cohomology of even very mildly singular projective varieties tends to be quite large. In particular, any singular projective variety with at worst ordinary double points has infinitely generated crystalline cohomology in at least two cohomological degrees. These calculations rely critically on comparisons between crystalline and derived de Rham cohomology.
In this article we use a Prym construction to study low dimensional abelian varieties with an action of the quaternion group. In special cases we describe the Shimura variety parameterizing such abelian varieties, as well as a map to this Shimura variety from a natural parameter space of quaternionic abelian varieties. Our description is based on the moduli of cubic threefolds with nine nodes, which we study in some detail.
We prove a finiteness theorem for the first flat cohomology group of finite flat group schemes over integral normal proper varieties over finite fields. As a consequence, we can prove the invariance of the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of Abelian schemes over higher dimensional bases under isogenies and alterations over/of such bases for the $p$-part. Along the way, we generalize previous results on the Tate-Shafarevich group in this situation.
Our goal is to classify all generically transitive actions of commutative unipotent groups on flag varieties up to conjugation. We establish relationship between this problem and classification of multiplications with certain properties on Lie algebra representations. Then we classify multiplications with the desired properties and solve the initial classification problem.
In this paper, we generalize a result of Karpenko on the torsion in the second quotient of the gamma filtration for Severi-Brauer varieties to higher degrees. As an application, we provide a nontrivial torsion in higher Chow groups and the topological filtration of the associated generic variety and obtain new upper bounds for the annihilators of the torsion subgroups in the Chow groups of a large class of Severi-Brauer varieties. In particular, using the torsion in higher degrees, we show indecomposability of certain algebras.
We formulate and study a torsion analogue of the weight-monodromy conjecture for a proper smooth scheme over a non-archimedean local field. We prove it for proper smooth schemes over equal characteristic non-archimedean local fields, abelian varieties, surfaces, varieties uniformized by Drinfeld upper half spaces, and set-theoretic complete intersections in toric varieties. In the equal characteristic case, our methods rely on an ultraproduct variant of Weil II established by Cadoret.
This is a survey primarily about determining the border rank of tensors, especially those relevant for the study of the complexity of matrix multiplication. This is a subject that on the one hand is of great significance in theoretical computer science, and on the other hand touches on many beautiful topics in algebraic geometry such as classical and recent results on equations for secant varieties (e.g., via vector bundle and representation-theoretic methods) and the geometry and deformation theory of zero dimensional schemes.
This is a slightly revised version of the author's 2010 diploma thesis. It is concerned with the interplay between real multiplication on Jacobian varieties, as the title suggests, and complex geodesics in the moduli space of curves. Large parts are expository and may hopefully serve as a very incomplete introduction to Teichmueller disks and curves, the moduli space of abelian differentials with its SL2(R)-operation and variations of Hodge structure.
Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be a discrete valuation ring with fraction field $K$ of characteristic $0$ and algebraically closed residue field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $A/K$ be an abelian variety of dimension $g$ with a $K$-rational point of order $p$. In this article, we are interested in the reduction properties that $A/K$ can have. After discussing the general case, we specialize to $g=1$, and we study the possible Kodaira types that can occur.
We show that complex multiplication on abelian varieties is equivalent to the existence of a constant rational Kähler metric. We give a sufficient condition for a mirror of an abelian variety of CM-type to be of CM-type as well. We also study the relationship between complex multiplication and rationality of a toroidal lattice vertex algebra.
Investigating a conjecture of Zannier, we study irreducible subvarieties of abelian schemes that dominate the base and contain a Zariski dense set of torsion points that lie on pairwise isogenous fibers. If everything is defined over the algebraic numbers and the abelian scheme has maximal variation, we prove that the geometric generic fiber of such a subvariety is a union of torsion cosets. We go on to prove fully or partially explicit versions of this result in fibered powers of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Finally, we apply a recent result of Galateau-Martínez to obtain uniform b…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. The number of torsion points that are rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$ of $L$ over $K$. Under the following three conditions, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound, in terms of the dimension of abelian subvarieties and their endomorphism rings. The three hypothesis are the following: $(1)$ $A$ is geometrically isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I, II or III, according to the Albert classification; $(2)$ $A$ is of "Lefschetz type", that is, t…
We survey Colmez's theory and conjecture about the Faltings height and a product formula for the periods of abelian varieties with complex multiplication, along with the function field analog developed by the authors. In this analog, abelian varieties are replaced by Drinfeld modules and $A$-motives. We also explain the necessary background on abelian varieties, Drinfeld modules and $A$-motives, including their cohomology theories and comparison isomorphisms and their theory of complex multiplication.
The endomorphism algebra of a K3 type Hodge structure is a totally real field or a CM field. In this paper we give a low brow introduction to the case of a totally real field. We give existence results for the Hodge structures, for their polarizations and for certain K3 surfaces. We consider the Kuga Satake variety of these Hodge structures and we discuss some examples. Finally we indicate various open problems related to the Hodge conjecture.
Anderson introduced a $p$-adic version of soliton theory. He then applied it to the Jacobian variety of a cyclic quotient of a Fermat curve and showed that torsion points of certain prime order lay outside of the theta divisor. In this paper, we evolve his theory further. As an application, we get a stronger result on the intersection of the theta divisor and torsion points on the Jacobian variety for more general curves. New examples are discussed as well. A key new ingredient is a map connecting the $p$-adic loop group and the formal group.
Let $p$ be a prime, let $K$ be a discretely valued extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $A_{K}$ be an abelian $K$-variety with semistable reduction. Extending work by Kim and Marshall from the case where $p>2$ and $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is unramified, we prove an $l=p$ complement of a Galois cohomological formula of Grothendieck for the $l$-primary part of the Néron component group of $A_{K}$. Our proof involves constructing, for each $m\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$, a finite flat $\mathscr{O}_K$-group scheme with generic fiber equal to the maximal 1-crystalline submodule of $A_{K}[p^{m}]$. As a corollar…
We answer a question raised by Hindry and Ratazzi concerning the intersection between cyclotomic extensions of a number field $K$ and extensions of $K$ generated by torsion points of an abelian variety over $K$. We prove that a weak version of the property $(μ)$ they introduced holds for any abelian variety, while the same is not true for a slightly stronger version of the property they also considered.
We give a function F(d,n,p) such that if K/Q_p is a degree n field extension and A/K is a d-dimensional abelian variety with potentially good reduction, then #A(K)[tors] is at most F(d,n,p). Separate attention is given to the prime-to-p torsion and to the case of purely additive reduction. These latter bounds are applied to classify rational torsion on CM elliptic curves over number fields of degree at most 3, on elliptic curves over Q with integral j (recovering a theorem of Frey), and on abelian surfaces over Q with integral moduli. In the last case, our efforts leave us with 11 numbers whic…
Given an elliptic curve $E/k$ and a Galois extension $k'/k$, we construct an exact functor from torsion-free modules over the endomorphism ring ${\rm End}(E_{k'})$ with a semilinear ${\rm Gal}(k'/k)$ action to abelian varieties over $k$ that are $k'$-isogenous to a power of $E$. As an application, we show that every elliptic curve with complex multiplication geometrically is isogenous over the ground field to one with complex multiplication by a maximal order.
We define analogues of homogeneous coordinate algebras for noncommutative two-tori with real multiplication. We prove that the categories of standard holomorphic vector bundles on such noncommutative tori can be described in terms of graded modules over appropriate homogeneous coordinate algebras. We give a criterion for such an algebra to be Koszul and prove that the Koszul dual algebra also comes from some noncommutative two-torus with real multiplication. These results are based on the techniques of math.QA/0211262 allowing to interpret all the data in terms of autoequivalences of the deriv…
Let $X$ be a toric variety. Rationally Borel-Moore homology of $X$ is isomorphic to the homology of the Koszul complex $A^T_*(X)\otimes Λ^\x M$, where $A^T_*(X)$ is the equivariant Chow group and $M$ is the character group of $T$. Moreover, the same holds for coefficients which are the integers with certain primes inverted.
We prove that the prime torsion in the local integral intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties in the flag variety of the general linear group grows exponentially in the rank. The idea of the proof is to find a highly singular point in a Schubert variety and calculate the Euler class of the normal bundle to the (miraculously smooth) fibre in a particular Bott-Samelson resolution. The result is a geometric version of an earlier result established using Soergel bimodule techniques.
We prove a variant of the reciprocity laws for CM abelian varieties, CM K3 surfaces, and CM points on Shimura varieties. Given a CM object over the complex numbers, our variation describes the set of all models over a given number field $F$ in terms of associated representations of the absolute Galois group of $F$. An essential feature is that we work with stacky Shimura varieties to deal with objects that have non-trivial automorphisms. To prove the result on K3 surfaces, we show that the stack of polarized K3 surfaces of given degree is an open substack of a certain Shimura stack. The precis…
We give a new general technique for constructing and counting number fields with an ideal class group of nontrivial m-rank. Our results can be viewed as providing a way of specializing the Picard group of a variety V over $\mathbb{Q}$ to obtain class groups for number fields $\mathbb{Q}(P)$, $P\in V(\Qbar)$, for certain families of points P. In particular, we show how the problem of constructing quadratic number fields with a large-rank ideal class group can be reduced to the problem of finding a hyperelliptic curve with a rational Weierstrass point and a large rational torsion subgroup in its…
Black holes in string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau varieties a priori might be expected to have moduli dependent features. For example the entropy of the black hole might be expected to depend on the complex structure of the manifold. This would be inconsistent with known properties of black holes. Supersymmetric black holes appear to evade this inconsistency by having moduli fields that flow to fixed points in the moduli space that depend only on the charges of the black hole. Moore observed in the case of compactifications with elliptic curve factors that these fixed points are arithmet…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$, the number of torsion points rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$. When $A$ is isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of $\GSp$ type, i.e. whose Mumford-Tate group is "generic" (isomorphic to the group of symplectic similitudes) and which satisfy the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound in terms of the dimensions of the abelian subvarieties of $A$. The result is unconditional for a product of simple abelian varieties with endomorph…
In this note we show that given a smooth affine variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ and an effective (possibly non reduced) Cartier divisor $D$ on it, the Kerz-Saito Chow group of zero cycles with modulus ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$ is torsion free, except possibly for $p$-torsion if the characteristic of $k$ is $p>0$. This generalizes to the relative setting classical theorems of Rojtman (for $X$ smooth) and of Levine (for $X$ singular). A stronger version of this result, that encompasses $p$-torsion as well, was proven with a different and more sophisticated method by A. Krishna and the…
The main result of this paper is the existence of Galois representations associated with the mod $p$ (or mod $p^m$) cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces for $\GL_n$ over a totally real or CM field, proving conjectures of Ash and others. Following an old suggestion of Clozel, recently realized by Harris-Lan-Taylor-Thorne for characteristic 0 cohomology classes, one realizes the cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces for $\GL_n$ as a boundary contribution of the cohomology of symplectic or unitary Shimura varieties, so that the key problem is to understand torsion in the cohomology of …
