Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a $p$-adic field $K$ and $L$ an algebraic infinite extension over $K$. We consider the finiteness of the torsion part of the group of rational points $A(L)$ under some assumptions. In 1975, Hideo Imai proved that such a group is finite if $A$ has good reduction and $L$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this talk, first we show a generalization of Imai's result in the case where $A$ has ordinary good reduction. Next we give some finiteness results when $A$ is an elliptic curve and $L$ is the field generated by the $p$-power torsion of an elliptic curve.
We determine the Galois representations inside the $l$-adic cohomology of some unitary Shimura varieties at split places where they admit uniformization by finite products of Drinfeld upper half spaces. Our main results confirm Langlands-Kottwitz's description of the cohomology of Shimura varieties in new cases.
Let $A \rightarrow S$ be an abelian scheme over a $p$-adic field, and let $s \colon S \rightarrow A$ be a section. We study the torsion locus $\bigcup \limits_{n \geq 1} s^{-1}(A[n])$ on $S$, and we show that torsion points on $S$ of different orders stay away from each other.
Using the p-adic uniformization of Shimura varieties we determine, for some of them, over which local fields they have rational points. Using this we show in some new curve cases that the jacobians are even in the sense of Poonen and Stoll.
We study the Galois symbol map associated to the multiplicative group and an abelian variety which has good ordinary reduction over a $p$-adic field. As a byproduct, one can calculate the "class group" in the view of the class field theory for curves over a $p$-adic field.
We show that torsion points of certain orders are not on a theta divisor in the Jacobian variety of a hyperelliptic curve given by the equation $y^2=x^{2g+1}+x$ with $g \geq 2$. The proof employs a method of Anderson who proved an analogous result for a cyclic quotient of a Fermat curve of prime degree.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $M$ the extension field of a $p$-adic field $K$ obtained by adjoining all $p$-power roots of all elements of $K$. In this paper, we show that there exists a constant $C$, depending only on $K$ and an integer $g>0$, which satisfies the following property:If $A_{/K}$ is a $g$-dimensional CM abelian variety, then the order of the torsion subgroup of $A(M)$ is bounded by $C$.
Let k be a subfield of a p-adic field of odd residue characteristic, and let L be the function field of a variety of dimension n >= 1 over k. Then Hilbert's Tenth Problem for L is undecidable. In particular, Hilbert's Tenth Problem for function fields of varieties over number fields of dimension >= 1 is undecidable.
We provide some general conditions which ensure that a system of inequalities involving homogeneous polynomials with coefficients in a S-adic field has nontrivial S-integral solutions. The proofs are based on the strong approximation property for Zariski-dense subgroups and adelic geometry of numbers. We give two examples of applications for systems involving quadratic and linear forms.
We construct some $n$-dimensional eigenvarieties for finite slope overconvergent eigenforms over some unitary Shimura varieties with signature $(1,n-1)\times(0,n)\times\cdots\times(0,n)$ by adapting Andreatta-Iovita-Pilloni's method. We also show that there are some Galois pseudo-characters over our eigenvarieties by studying analytic continuation of finite slope eigenforms over these Shimura varieties.
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ and $A/F$ an abelian variety. Let $K/F$ be an $ł$-adic Lie extension ($ł\neq p$) unramified outside a finite set of primes $S$ and such that $\Gal(K/F)$ has no elements of order $ł$. We shall prove that, under certain conditions, $Sel_A(K)_ł^\vee$ has no nontrivial pseudo-null submodule.
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without CM. The isogeny graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is a graph which has a vertex for each elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$ and an edge for each $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny of prime degree that maps one elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$ to another elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$, with the degree recorded as a label of the edge. An isogeny-torsion graph is an isogeny graph where, in addition, we label each vertex with the abstract group structure of the torsion subgroup over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the correspond…
We show that, for an abelian variety defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ which has potential good reduction, its torsion subgroup with values in the composite field of $K$ and a certain Lubin-Tate extension over a $p$-adic field is finite.
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. The isogeny graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is a graph which has a vertex for each element of $\mathcal{E}$ and an edge for each $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny of prime degree that maps one elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$ to another elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$, with the degree of the isogeny recorded as a label of the edge. The isogeny-torsion graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is the isogeny graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ where, in addition, we label each vertex with the abstract group structure of t…
We generalize some of the results of Andreatta, Iovita, and Pilloni and the author to Hodge type Shimura varieties having non-empty ordinary locus. For any $p$-adic weight $κ$, we give a geometric definition of the space of overconvergent modular forms of weight $κ$ in terms of sections of a sheaf. We show that our sheaves live in analytic families, interpolating the classical sheaves for integral weights. We define an action of the Hecke algebra, including a completely continuous operator at $p$. In some simple cases, we also build the eigenvariety.
In this paper, we study a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa, on the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of abelian varieties with constrained prime power torsion. Our result is related with abelian varieties which have complex multiplication over their fields of definition.
We show that the logarithmic version of the syntomic cohomology of Fontaine and Messing for semistable varieties over $p$-adic rings extends uniquely to a cohomology theory for varieties over $p$-adic fields that satisfies $h$-descent. This new cohomology - syntomic cohomology - is a Bloch-Ogus cohomology theory, admits period map to étale cohomology, and has a syntomic descent spectral sequence (from an algebraic closure of the given field to the field itself) that is compatible with the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence on the étale side. In relative dimension zero we recover the potentiall…
Let E be an elliptic curve with additive reduction over the p-adic numbers, and let G be the group of p-adic points on E that have good reduction. This paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for G to contain non-trivial p-torsion.
Let $B$ be a simple CM abelian variety over a CM field $E$, $p$ a rational prime. Suppose that $B$ has potentially ordinary reduction above $p$ and is self-dual with root number $-1$. Under some further conditions, we prove the generic non-vanishing of (cyclotomic) $p$-adic heights on $B$ along anticyclotomic $\Z_{p}$-extensions of $E$. This provides evidence towards Schneider's conjecture on the non-vanishing of $p$-adic heights. For CM elliptic curves over $\Q$, the result was previously known as a consequence of work of Bertrand, Gross--Zagier and Rohrlich in the 1980s. Our proof is based o…
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
If A is an abelian variety over a number field K, and L is a (possibly infinite) extension of K generated by torsion points of A, then the quotient of A(L) by its torsion subgroup is a free abelian group.
The notion of a $(φ,\hat{G})$-module is defined by Tong Liu in 2010 to classify lattices in semi-stable representations. In this paper, we study torsion $(φ,\hat{G})$-modules, and torsion p-adic representations associated with them, including the case where p=2. First we prove that the category of torsion p-adic representations arising from torsion $(φ,\hat{G})$-modules is an abelian category. Secondly, we construct a maximal (minimal) theory for $(φ,\hat{G})$-modules by using the theory of étale $(φ, \hat{G})$-modules, essentially proved by Xavier Caruso, which is an analogue of Fontaine's th…
We prove $p$-adic versions of a classical result in arithmetic geometry stating that an irreducible subvariety of an abelian variety with dense torsion has to be the translate of a subgroup by a torsion point. We do so in the context of certain rigid analytic spaces and formal groups over a $p$-adic field $K$ or its ring of integers $R$, respectively. In particular, we show that the rigidity results for algebraic functions underlying the so-called Manin-Mumford Conjecture generalize to suitable $p$-adic analytic functions. In the formal setting, this approach leads us to uncover purely $p$-adi…
We compute the p-torsion and p-adic etale cohomologies with compact support of period domains over local fields in the case of basic isocrystals for quasi-split reductive groups. For the p-torsion case, we follow the method used by Orlik in his computations of the l-torsion etale cohomology using as a key new ingredient the computation of Ext groups between mod p generalized Steinberg representations of p-adic groups. For the p-adic case, we don't use Huber's definition of etale cohomology with compact support as Orlik did since it seems to give spaces that are much too big; instead we use con…
A particular case of Bergeron-Venkatesh's conjecture predicts that torsion classes in the cohomology of Shimura varieties are rather rare. According to this and for Kottwitz-Harris-Taylor type of Shimura varieties, we first associate to each such torsion class an infinity of irreducible automorphic representations in characteristic zero, which are pairwise non isomorphic and weakly congruent. Then, using completed cohomology, we construct torsion classes in regular weight and then deduce explicit examples of such automorphic congruences.
We introduce a method for producing congruences between Hecke eigenclasses, possibly torsion, in the coherent cohomology of automorphic vector bundles on certain good reduction Shimura varieties. The congruences are produced using some "generalized Hasse invariants" adapted to the Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the special fiber.
We prove formulas for the p-adic logarithm of quaternionic Darmon points on p-adic tori and modular abelian varieties over Q having purely multiplicative reduction at p. These formulas are amenable to explicit computations and are the first to treat Stark-Heegner type points on higher-dimensional abelian varieties.
We show that the mod p cohomology of a smooth projective variety with semistable reduction over K, a finite extension of Qp, embeds into the reduction modulo p of a semistable Galois representation with Hodge-Tate weights in the expected range (at least after semisimplifying, in the case of the cohomological degree > 1). We prove refinements with descent data, and we apply these results to the cohomology of unitary Shimura varieties, deducing vanishing results and applications to the weight part of Serre's conjecture.
We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.
$p$-adic Hodge Theory is one of the most powerful tools in modern Arithmetic Geometry. In this survey, we will review $p$-adic Hodge Theory for algebraic varieties, present current developments in $p$-adic Hodge Theory for analytic varieties, and discuss some of its applications to problems in Number Theory. This is an extended version of a talk at the Jubilee Congress for the 100th anniversary of the Polish Mathematical Society, Kraków, 2019.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. We establish an equivalence between the weak Leopoldt conjecture and the expected value of the corank of the classical Selmer group of $A$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension (not neccesasily containing the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension). As an application, we obtain the exactness of the defining sequence of the Selmer group. In the event that the $p$-adic Lie extension is one-dimensional, we show that the dual Selmer group has no nontrivial finite submodules. Finally, we show that…
Using properties of the Frobenius eigenvalues, we show that, in a precise sense, ``most'' isomorphism classes of (principally polarized) simple abelian varieties over a finite field are characterized up to isogeny by the sequence of their division fields, and a similar result for ``most'' isogeny classes. Some global cases are also treated.
Let $F$ be a totally real number field and let $p$ be a prime unramified in $F$. We prove the existence of Galois pseudo-representations attached to mod $p^m$ Hecke eigenclasses of paritious weight occurring in the coherent cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties for $F$ of level prime to $p$.
We show how non-vanishing of p-adic L functions controls the dimensions of Selmer varieties associated to the complement of the origin in an elliptic curve with CM. As a corollary, one obtains a π_1-proof of the theorem of Siegel for such curves.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K and let Kab be the maximal abelian extension of K. We show that there only finitely many torsion points of A which are defined over Kab iff A has no abelian subvariety with complex multiplication over K. We use this to give another proof of Ribet's result that A has only finitely many torsion points which are defined over the cyclotomic extension of K.
We formulate and prove certain vanishing theorems for p-adic automorphic forms on unitary groups of arbitrary signature. The p-adic q-expansion principle for p-adic modular forms on the Igusa tower says that if the coefficients of (sufficiently many of) the q-expansions of a p-adic modular form f are zero, then f vanishes everywhere on the Igusa tower. There is no p-adic q-expansion principle for unitary groups of arbitrary signature in the literature. By replacing q-expansions with Serre-Tate expansions (expansions in terms of Serre-Tate deformation coordinates) and replacing modular forms wi…
In this paper we generalize Cherednik's method and prove that certain Shimura varieties corresponding to groups of unitary similitudes and automorphic vector bundles over them have p-adic uniformization. This is proved for Shimura varieties, uniformized by the complex unit ball, when the central simple algebra over a CM-field defining the group of unitary similitudes has Brauer invariant 1/d at p. In this case, Shimura varieties can be uniformized by Drinfeld's covers of p-adic upper half-spaces.
Let F be a number field and N an integral ideal in its ring of integers. Let f be a modular newform over F of level Gamma0(N) with rational Fourier coefficients. Under certain additional conditions, Guitart-Masdeu-Sengun constructed a p-adic lattice which is conjectured to be the Tate lattice of an elliptic curve E whose L-function equals that of f. The aim of this note is to generalize this construction when the Hecke eigenvalues of f generate a number field of degree d >= 1, in which case the geometric object associated to f is expected to be, in general, an abelian variety A of dimension d.…
We compute, in a stable range, the arithmetic p-adic etale cohomology of smooth rigid analytic and dagger varieties (without any assumption on the existence of a nice integral model) in terms of differential forms using syntomic methods. The main technical input is a construction of a Hyodo-Kato cohomology and a Hyodo-Kato isomorphism with de Rham cohomology.
Let $D$ be an odd square-free positive integer and $C$ a divisor of $D$. For any quadratic character $χ$ modulo $C$, we prove that the $χ$-part of the group $J_0(DC)_\text{tor}$ of torsion points of $J_0(DC)$ coincides with the $χ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup, away from those primes of bad reduction or where possible congruences between oldforms and newforms occur.
The Torsion Anomalous Conjecture (TAC) states that a subvariety V of an abelian variety A has only finitely many maximal torsion anomalous subvarieties. In this work we prove, with an effective method, some cases of the TAC when the ambient variety A has CM, generalising our previous results in products of CM elliptic curves. When V is a curve, we give new results and we deduce some implications on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture.
We study Galois representations attached to nonsimple abelian varieties over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. We give sufficient conditions for such representations to decompose as a product, and apply them to prove arithmetical analogues of results shown by Moonen and Zarhin in the context of complex abelian varieties (of dimension at most 5).
Let A be an abelian variety of positive dimension defined over a number field K and let Kbar be a fixed algebraic closure of K. For each element sigma of the absolute Galois group Gal(Kbar/K), let Kbar(sigma) be the fixed field of sigma in Kbar. We shall prove that the torsion subgroup of A(Kbar(sigma)) is infinite for all sigma in Gal(Kbar/K) outside of some set of Haar measure zero. This proves the number field case of a conjecture of Geyer and Jarden from 1978.
We give proofs of de Rham comparison isomorphisms for rigid-analytic varieties, with coefficients and in families. This relies on the theory of perfectoid spaces. Another new ingredient is the pro-etale site, which makes all constructions completely functorial.

In this paper, we give explicit descriptions of Hyodo and Kato's Frobenius and Monodromy operators on the first $p$-adic de Rham cohomology groups of curves and Abelian varieties with semi-stable reduction over local fields of mixed characteristic. This paper was motivated by the first author's paper "A $p$-adic Shimura isomorphism and periods of modular forms," where conjectural definitions of these operators for curves with semi-stable reduction were given.
