Let $A \rightarrow S$ be an abelian scheme over a $p$-adic field, and let $s \colon S \rightarrow A$ be a section. We study the torsion locus $\bigcup \limits_{n \geq 1} s^{-1}(A[n])$ on $S$, and we show that torsion points on $S$ of different orders stay away from each other.
We show that torsion points of certain orders are not on a theta divisor in the Jacobian variety of a hyperelliptic curve given by the equation $y^2=x^{2g+1}+x$ with $g \geq 2$. The proof employs a method of Anderson who proved an analogous result for a cyclic quotient of a Fermat curve of prime degree.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $M$ the extension field of a $p$-adic field $K$ obtained by adjoining all $p$-power roots of all elements of $K$. In this paper, we show that there exists a constant $C$, depending only on $K$ and an integer $g>0$, which satisfies the following property:If $A_{/K}$ is a $g$-dimensional CM abelian variety, then the order of the torsion subgroup of $A(M)$ is bounded by $C$.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a $p$-adic field $K$ and $L$ an algebraic infinite extension over $K$. We consider the finiteness of the torsion part of the group of rational points $A(L)$ under some assumptions. In 1975, Hideo Imai proved that such a group is finite if $A$ has good reduction and $L$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this talk, first we show a generalization of Imai's result in the case where $A$ has ordinary good reduction. Next we give some finiteness results when $A$ is an elliptic curve and $L$ is the field generated by the $p$-power torsion of an el…
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without CM. The isogeny graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is a graph which has a vertex for each elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$ and an edge for each $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny of prime degree that maps one elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$ to another elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$, with the degree recorded as a label of the edge. An isogeny-torsion graph is an isogeny graph where, in addition, we label each vertex with the abstract group structure of the torsion subgroup over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the correspond…
We show that, for an abelian variety defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ which has potential good reduction, its torsion subgroup with values in the composite field of $K$ and a certain Lubin-Tate extension over a $p$-adic field is finite.
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. The isogeny graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is a graph which has a vertex for each element of $\mathcal{E}$ and an edge for each $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny of prime degree that maps one elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$ to another elliptic curve in $\mathcal{E}$, with the degree of the isogeny recorded as a label of the edge. The isogeny-torsion graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is the isogeny graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ where, in addition, we label each vertex with the abstract group structure of t…
Let E be an elliptic curve with additive reduction over the p-adic numbers, and let G be the group of p-adic points on E that have good reduction. This paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for G to contain non-trivial p-torsion.
We study the Galois symbol map associated to the multiplicative group and an abelian variety which has good ordinary reduction over a $p$-adic field. As a byproduct, one can calculate the "class group" in the view of the class field theory for curves over a $p$-adic field.
The notion of a $(φ,\hat{G})$-module is defined by Tong Liu in 2010 to classify lattices in semi-stable representations. In this paper, we study torsion $(φ,\hat{G})$-modules, and torsion p-adic representations associated with them, including the case where p=2. First we prove that the category of torsion p-adic representations arising from torsion $(φ,\hat{G})$-modules is an abelian category. Secondly, we construct a maximal (minimal) theory for $(φ,\hat{G})$-modules by using the theory of étale $(φ, \hat{G})$-modules, essentially proved by Xavier Caruso, which is an analogue of Fontaine's th…
We prove $p$-adic versions of a classical result in arithmetic geometry stating that an irreducible subvariety of an abelian variety with dense torsion has to be the translate of a subgroup by a torsion point. We do so in the context of certain rigid analytic spaces and formal groups over a $p$-adic field $K$ or its ring of integers $R$, respectively. In particular, we show that the rigidity results for algebraic functions underlying the so-called Manin-Mumford Conjecture generalize to suitable $p$-adic analytic functions. In the formal setting, this approach leads us to uncover purely $p$-adi…
We compute the p-torsion and p-adic etale cohomologies with compact support of period domains over local fields in the case of basic isocrystals for quasi-split reductive groups. For the p-torsion case, we follow the method used by Orlik in his computations of the l-torsion etale cohomology using as a key new ingredient the computation of Ext groups between mod p generalized Steinberg representations of p-adic groups. For the p-adic case, we don't use Huber's definition of etale cohomology with compact support as Orlik did since it seems to give spaces that are much too big; instead we use con…
In a previous paper the second author developed a new approach to the abelian p-adic Stark Conjecture at s=1 and stated some related conjectures. This paper develops and applies techniques using p-adic measures and continued fractions to numerically investigate one of these conjectures to high precision in fifteen cases with a real quadratic base field.
In 2007, B. Poonen (unpublished) studied the $p$--adic closure of a subgroup of rational points on a commutative algebraic group. More recently, J. Bellaïche asked the same question for the special case of Abelian varieties. These problems are $p$--adic analogues of a question raised earlier by B. Mazur on the density of rational points for the real topology. For a simple Abelian variety over the field of rational numbers, we show that the actual $p$--adic rank is at least the third of the expected value.

Let $K$ be a complete, discretely valued field with finite residue field and $G_K$ its absolute Galois group. The subject of this note is the study of the set of positive integers $d$ for which there exists an absolutely irreducible $\ell$-adic representation of $G_K$ of dimension $d$ with rational traces on inertia. Our main result is that non-Sophie Germain primes are not in this set when the residue characteristic of $K$ is $> 3$. The result stated in the title is a special case.
We develop a theory of `non-abelian higher special elements' in the non-commutative exterior powers of the Galois cohomology of $p$-adic representations. We explore their relation to the theory of organising matrices and thus to the Galois module structure of Selmer modules. In concrete applications, we relate our general theory to the formulation of refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type and to the Galois structure of Tate-Shafarevich and Selmer groups of abelian varieties.
Let V be a p-adic representation of the absolute Galois group G of Q_p that becomes crystalline over a finite tame extension, and assume p odd. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for V to be isomorphic to the Tate module V_p(A) of an abelian variety A defined over Q_p. These conditions are stated on the filtered (ϕ,G)-module attached to V.
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ and $A/F$ an abelian variety. Let $K/F$ be an $ł$-adic Lie extension ($ł\neq p$) unramified outside a finite set of primes $S$ and such that $\Gal(K/F)$ has no elements of order $ł$. We shall prove that, under certain conditions, $Sel_A(K)_ł^\vee$ has no nontrivial pseudo-null submodule.
Let $B$ be a simple CM abelian variety over a CM field $E$, $p$ a rational prime. Suppose that $B$ has potentially ordinary reduction above $p$ and is self-dual with root number $-1$. Under some further conditions, we prove the generic non-vanishing of (cyclotomic) $p$-adic heights on $B$ along anticyclotomic $\Z_{p}$-extensions of $E$. This provides evidence towards Schneider's conjecture on the non-vanishing of $p$-adic heights. For CM elliptic curves over $\Q$, the result was previously known as a consequence of work of Bertrand, Gross--Zagier and Rohrlich in the 1980s. Our proof is based o…
We prove new congruences between special values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$ over arbitrary number fields. This allows us to control the behavior of $p$-adic $L$-functions under Tate twists and to prove the existence of non-abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions for Hida families on $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$. As an application, we prove strong non-vanishing results for central $L$-values: We give sufficient local conditions for twisted central Rankin-Selberg $L$-values to be generically non-zero.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K and let Kab be the maximal abelian extension of K. We show that there only finitely many torsion points of A which are defined over Kab iff A has no abelian subvariety with complex multiplication over K. We use this to give another proof of Ribet's result that A has only finitely many torsion points which are defined over the cyclotomic extension of K.
If A is an abelian variety over a number field K, and L is a (possibly infinite) extension of K generated by torsion points of A, then the quotient of A(L) by its torsion subgroup is a free abelian group.
For a curve $X$ over a $p$-adic field $k$, using the class field theory of $X$ due to S. Bloch and S. Saito we study the abelian geometric fundamental group $π_1^{\mathrm{ab}}(X)^{\mathrm{geo}}$ of $X$. In particular, it is investigated a subgroup of $π_1^{\mathrm{ab}}(X)^{\mathrm{geo}}$ which classifies the geometric and abelian coverings of $X$ which allow possible ramification over the special fiber of the model of $X$. Under the assumptions that $X$ has a $k$-rational point, $X$ has good reduction and its Jacobian variety has good ordinary reduction, we give some upper and lower bounds of …
In this paper, we study a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa, on the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of abelian varieties with constrained prime power torsion. Our result is related with abelian varieties which have complex multiplication over their fields of definition.
In this work we prove the so-called "torsion congruences" between abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions that are related to automorphic representations of definite unitary groups. These congruences play a central role in the non-commutative Iwasawa theory as it became clear in the works of Kakde, Ritter and Weiss on the non-abelian Main Conjecture for the Tate motive. We tackle these congruences for a general definite unitary group of $n$ variables and we obtain more explicit results in the special cases of $n=1$ and $n=2$. In both of these cases we also explain their implications for some particular…
We extend the results by R.P. Langlands on representations of (connected) abelian algebraic groups. This is done by considering characters into any divisible abelian topological group. With this we can then prove what is known as the abelian case of the $p$-adic Langlands program.
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
In this paper we present a description of the Galois representation attached to an elliptic curve defined over a $2$-adic field $K$, in the case where the image of inertia is non-abelian. There are two possibilities for the image of inertia, namely $Q_8$ and $SL_2(\mathbb{F}_3)$, and in each case we need to distinguish whether the inertia degree of $K$ over $\mathbb{Q}_2$ is even or odd. The result presented here can be implemented in an algorithm to compute explicitly the Galois representation in these four cases.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. We establish an equivalence between the weak Leopoldt conjecture and the expected value of the corank of the classical Selmer group of $A$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension (not neccesasily containing the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension). As an application, we obtain the exactness of the defining sequence of the Selmer group. In the event that the $p$-adic Lie extension is one-dimensional, we show that the dual Selmer group has no nontrivial finite submodules. Finally, we show that…
Mark Kisin proved that a certain restriction functor on crystalline p-adic representations is fully faithful. In this paper, we prove the torsion analogue of Kisin's theorem.
Let F be a number field and N an integral ideal in its ring of integers. Let f be a modular newform over F of level Gamma0(N) with rational Fourier coefficients. Under certain additional conditions, Guitart-Masdeu-Sengun constructed a p-adic lattice which is conjectured to be the Tate lattice of an elliptic curve E whose L-function equals that of f. The aim of this note is to generalize this construction when the Hecke eigenvalues of f generate a number field of degree d >= 1, in which case the geometric object associated to f is expected to be, in general, an abelian variety A of dimension d.…
Anderson introduced a $p$-adic version of soliton theory. He then applied it to the Jacobian variety of a cyclic quotient of a Fermat curve and showed that torsion points of certain prime order lay outside of the theta divisor. In this paper, we evolve his theory further. As an application, we get a stronger result on the intersection of the theta divisor and torsion points on the Jacobian variety for more general curves. New examples are discussed as well. A key new ingredient is a map connecting the $p$-adic loop group and the formal group.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field $K$ with good reduction outside a finite set of primes $S$. We show that if the $\ell$-torsion subgroup schemes $A[\ell^n]$ lie in a certain category of group schemes, then $A[\ell^n]$ does not contain any subgroup schemes that are étale or are of multiplicative type.
We prove formulas for the p-adic logarithm of quaternionic Darmon points on p-adic tori and modular abelian varieties over Q having purely multiplicative reduction at p. These formulas are amenable to explicit computations and are the first to treat Stark-Heegner type points on higher-dimensional abelian varieties.
We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.
We compute the density of the set of ordinary primes of an abelian surface over a number field in terms of the l-adic monodromy group. Using the classification of l-adic monodromy groups of abelian surfaces by Fite, Kedlaya, Rotger, and Sutherland, we show the density is 1, 1/2, or 1/4.
Using properties of the Frobenius eigenvalues, we show that, in a precise sense, ``most'' isomorphism classes of (principally polarized) simple abelian varieties over a finite field are characterized up to isogeny by the sequence of their division fields, and a similar result for ``most'' isogeny classes. Some global cases are also treated.
Let $C/\mathbb{F}_q$ be a regular projective curve, $\infty \in C$ a closed point, $A := Γ(C - \{\infty\}, \mathcal{O}_C)$, and $K := K(C)$ the fraction field of $A$. Consider a finite extension $L/K$, a place $v$ of $L$, and an abelian $A$-module $M$ (in the sense of Anderson) over $L_v$. We prove that the $L_v$-rational torsion submodule $M(L_v)_{\mathrm{tors}}$ of $M$ is a finite $A$-module.
Elementary abelian groups are finite groups in the form of $A=(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^r$ for a prime number $p$. For every integer $\ell>1$ and $r>1$, we prove a non-trivial upper bound on the $\ell$-torsion in class groups of every $A$-extension. Our results are pointwise and unconditional. When $r$ is large enough, the pointwise bound we obtain also breaks the previously best known bound shown by Ellenberg-Venkatesh under GRH.
The Torsion Anomalous Conjecture (TAC) states that a subvariety V of an abelian variety A has only finitely many maximal torsion anomalous subvarieties. In this work we prove, with an effective method, some cases of the TAC when the ambient variety A has CM, generalising our previous results in products of CM elliptic curves. When V is a curve, we give new results and we deduce some implications on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture.
The paper starts out from pseudomeasures (in the sense of Serre) which hold the arithmetic properties of the abelian $l$-adic Artin $L$-functions over totally real number fields. In order to generalize to non-abelian $l$-adic $L$-functions, these abelian pseudomeasures must satisfy congruences which are introduced but not yet known to be true. The relation to the ``equivariant main conjecture'' of Iwasawa theory is discussed.
In this paper the new techniques and results concerning the structure theory of modules over non-commutative Iwasawa algebras are applied to arithmetic: we study Iwasawa modules over p-adic Lie extensions K of number fields k "up to pseudo-isomorphism". In particular, a close relationship is revealed between the Selmer group of abelian varieties, the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified p-extension of K as well as the Galois group of the maximal abelian outside S unramified p-extension where S is a finite set of certain places of k. Moreover, we determine the Galois module structure …
A non-trivial finitely generated pro-$p$ group $G$ is said to be strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$ if every non-trivial finitely generated closed subgroup of $G$ admits a faithful self-similar action on a $p$-ary tree. We classify the solvable torsion-free $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ groups of dimension less than $p$ that are strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$. Moreover, we show that a solvable torsion-free $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ group of dimension less than $p$ is strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$ if and only if it is isomorphic to the maximal pro-$p$…
Let A be an abelian variety of positive dimension defined over a number field K and let Kbar be a fixed algebraic closure of K. For each element sigma of the absolute Galois group Gal(Kbar/K), let Kbar(sigma) be the fixed field of sigma in Kbar. We shall prove that the torsion subgroup of A(Kbar(sigma)) is infinite for all sigma in Gal(Kbar/K) outside of some set of Haar measure zero. This proves the number field case of a conjecture of Geyer and Jarden from 1978.
Given a rational variety $V$ defined over $K$, we consider a principally polarized abelian variety $A$ of dimension $g$ defined over $V$. For each prime l we then consider the galois representation on the $l$-torsion of $A_t$, where $t$ is a $K$-rational point of $V$. The largest possible image is $GSp_{2g}(\mathbb{F}_l)$ and in the cases $g=1$ and 2, we are able to get surjectivity for all $l$ and almost all $t$. In the case $g=1$ this recovers a theorem originally proven by William Duke.
Fix an integer $d>0$. In 2008, David and Weston showed that, on average, an elliptic curve over $\mathbf{Q}$ picks up a nontrivial $p$-torsion point defined over a finite extension $K$ of the $p$-adics of degree at most $d$ for only finitely many primes $p$. This paper proves an analogous averaging result for principally polarized abelian surfaces over $\mathbf{Q}$ with real multiplication by $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ and a level-$\sqrt{5}$ structure. Furthermore, we indicate how the result on abelian surfaces with real multiplication by $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ relates to the deformation theory of…
