For a curve $X$ over a $p$-adic field $k$, using the class field theory of $X$ due to S. Bloch and S. Saito we study the abelian geometric fundamental group $π_1^{\mathrm{ab}}(X)^{\mathrm{geo}}$ of $X$. In particular, it is investigated a subgroup of $π_1^{\mathrm{ab}}(X)^{\mathrm{geo}}$ which classifies the geometric and abelian coverings of $X$ which allow possible ramification over the special fiber of the model of $X$. Under the assumptions that $X$ has a $k$-rational point, $X$ has good reduction and its Jacobian variety has good ordinary reduction, we give some upper and lower bounds of this subgroup of $π_1^{\mathrm{ab}}(X)^{\mathrm{geo}}$.
We study the Galois symbol map associated to the multiplicative group and an abelian variety which has good ordinary reduction over a $p$-adic field. As a byproduct, one can calculate the "class group" in the view of the class field theory for curves over a $p$-adic field.
In a previous paper the second author developed a new approach to the abelian p-adic Stark Conjecture at s=1 and stated some related conjectures. This paper develops and applies techniques using p-adic measures and continued fractions to numerically investigate one of these conjectures to high precision in fifteen cases with a real quadratic base field.
In 2007, B. Poonen (unpublished) studied the $p$--adic closure of a subgroup of rational points on a commutative algebraic group. More recently, J. Bellaïche asked the same question for the special case of Abelian varieties. These problems are $p$--adic analogues of a question raised earlier by B. Mazur on the density of rational points for the real topology. For a simple Abelian variety over the field of rational numbers, we show that the actual $p$--adic rank is at least the third of the expected value.
Let $A \rightarrow S$ be an abelian scheme over a $p$-adic field, and let $s \colon S \rightarrow A$ be a section. We study the torsion locus $\bigcup \limits_{n \geq 1} s^{-1}(A[n])$ on $S$, and we show that torsion points on $S$ of different orders stay away from each other.

Let $K$ be a complete, discretely valued field with finite residue field and $G_K$ its absolute Galois group. The subject of this note is the study of the set of positive integers $d$ for which there exists an absolutely irreducible $\ell$-adic representation of $G_K$ of dimension $d$ with rational traces on inertia. Our main result is that non-Sophie Germain primes are not in this set when the residue characteristic of $K$ is $> 3$. The result stated in the title is a special case.
We develop a theory of `non-abelian higher special elements' in the non-commutative exterior powers of the Galois cohomology of $p$-adic representations. We explore their relation to the theory of organising matrices and thus to the Galois module structure of Selmer modules. In concrete applications, we relate our general theory to the formulation of refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type and to the Galois structure of Tate-Shafarevich and Selmer groups of abelian varieties.
Let V be a p-adic representation of the absolute Galois group G of Q_p that becomes crystalline over a finite tame extension, and assume p odd. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for V to be isomorphic to the Tate module V_p(A) of an abelian variety A defined over Q_p. These conditions are stated on the filtered (ϕ,G)-module attached to V.
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ and $A/F$ an abelian variety. Let $K/F$ be an $ł$-adic Lie extension ($ł\neq p$) unramified outside a finite set of primes $S$ and such that $\Gal(K/F)$ has no elements of order $ł$. We shall prove that, under certain conditions, $Sel_A(K)_ł^\vee$ has no nontrivial pseudo-null submodule.
Let $B$ be a simple CM abelian variety over a CM field $E$, $p$ a rational prime. Suppose that $B$ has potentially ordinary reduction above $p$ and is self-dual with root number $-1$. Under some further conditions, we prove the generic non-vanishing of (cyclotomic) $p$-adic heights on $B$ along anticyclotomic $\Z_{p}$-extensions of $E$. This provides evidence towards Schneider's conjecture on the non-vanishing of $p$-adic heights. For CM elliptic curves over $\Q$, the result was previously known as a consequence of work of Bertrand, Gross--Zagier and Rohrlich in the 1980s. Our proof is based o…
We prove new congruences between special values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$ over arbitrary number fields. This allows us to control the behavior of $p$-adic $L$-functions under Tate twists and to prove the existence of non-abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions for Hida families on $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$. As an application, we prove strong non-vanishing results for central $L$-values: We give sufficient local conditions for twisted central Rankin-Selberg $L$-values to be generically non-zero.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $M$ the extension field of a $p$-adic field $K$ obtained by adjoining all $p$-power roots of all elements of $K$. In this paper, we show that there exists a constant $C$, depending only on $K$ and an integer $g>0$, which satisfies the following property:If $A_{/K}$ is a $g$-dimensional CM abelian variety, then the order of the torsion subgroup of $A(M)$ is bounded by $C$.
In this work we prove the so-called "torsion congruences" between abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions that are related to automorphic representations of definite unitary groups. These congruences play a central role in the non-commutative Iwasawa theory as it became clear in the works of Kakde, Ritter and Weiss on the non-abelian Main Conjecture for the Tate motive. We tackle these congruences for a general definite unitary group of $n$ variables and we obtain more explicit results in the special cases of $n=1$ and $n=2$. In both of these cases we also explain their implications for some particular…
We extend the results by R.P. Langlands on representations of (connected) abelian algebraic groups. This is done by considering characters into any divisible abelian topological group. With this we can then prove what is known as the abelian case of the $p$-adic Langlands program.
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
In this paper we present a description of the Galois representation attached to an elliptic curve defined over a $2$-adic field $K$, in the case where the image of inertia is non-abelian. There are two possibilities for the image of inertia, namely $Q_8$ and $SL_2(\mathbb{F}_3)$, and in each case we need to distinguish whether the inertia degree of $K$ over $\mathbb{Q}_2$ is even or odd. The result presented here can be implemented in an algorithm to compute explicitly the Galois representation in these four cases.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. We establish an equivalence between the weak Leopoldt conjecture and the expected value of the corank of the classical Selmer group of $A$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension (not neccesasily containing the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension). As an application, we obtain the exactness of the defining sequence of the Selmer group. In the event that the $p$-adic Lie extension is one-dimensional, we show that the dual Selmer group has no nontrivial finite submodules. Finally, we show that…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a $p$-adic field $K$ and $L$ an algebraic infinite extension over $K$. We consider the finiteness of the torsion part of the group of rational points $A(L)$ under some assumptions. In 1975, Hideo Imai proved that such a group is finite if $A$ has good reduction and $L$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this talk, first we show a generalization of Imai's result in the case where $A$ has ordinary good reduction. Next we give some finiteness results when $A$ is an elliptic curve and $L$ is the field generated by the $p$-power torsion of an el…
Let F be a number field and N an integral ideal in its ring of integers. Let f be a modular newform over F of level Gamma0(N) with rational Fourier coefficients. Under certain additional conditions, Guitart-Masdeu-Sengun constructed a p-adic lattice which is conjectured to be the Tate lattice of an elliptic curve E whose L-function equals that of f. The aim of this note is to generalize this construction when the Hecke eigenvalues of f generate a number field of degree d >= 1, in which case the geometric object associated to f is expected to be, in general, an abelian variety A of dimension d.…
We prove formulas for the p-adic logarithm of quaternionic Darmon points on p-adic tori and modular abelian varieties over Q having purely multiplicative reduction at p. These formulas are amenable to explicit computations and are the first to treat Stark-Heegner type points on higher-dimensional abelian varieties.
We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.
We show that, for an abelian variety defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ which has potential good reduction, its torsion subgroup with values in the composite field of $K$ and a certain Lubin-Tate extension over a $p$-adic field is finite.
We compute the density of the set of ordinary primes of an abelian surface over a number field in terms of the l-adic monodromy group. Using the classification of l-adic monodromy groups of abelian surfaces by Fite, Kedlaya, Rotger, and Sutherland, we show the density is 1, 1/2, or 1/4.
The paper starts out from pseudomeasures (in the sense of Serre) which hold the arithmetic properties of the abelian $l$-adic Artin $L$-functions over totally real number fields. In order to generalize to non-abelian $l$-adic $L$-functions, these abelian pseudomeasures must satisfy congruences which are introduced but not yet known to be true. The relation to the ``equivariant main conjecture'' of Iwasawa theory is discussed.
In this paper the new techniques and results concerning the structure theory of modules over non-commutative Iwasawa algebras are applied to arithmetic: we study Iwasawa modules over p-adic Lie extensions K of number fields k "up to pseudo-isomorphism". In particular, a close relationship is revealed between the Selmer group of abelian varieties, the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified p-extension of K as well as the Galois group of the maximal abelian outside S unramified p-extension where S is a finite set of certain places of k. Moreover, we determine the Galois module structure …
We study Galois representations attached to nonsimple abelian varieties over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. We give sufficient conditions for such representations to decompose as a product, and apply them to prove arithmetical analogues of results shown by Moonen and Zarhin in the context of complex abelian varieties (of dimension at most 5).
We study a relation between two refinements of the rank one abelian Gross-Stark conjecture: For a suitable abelian extension $H/F$ of number fields, a Gross-Stark unit is defined as a $p$-unit of $H$ satisfying some proporties. Let $τ\in \mathrm{Gal}(H/F)$. Yoshida and the author constructed the symbol $Y_p(τ)$ by using $p$-adic $\log$ multiple gamma functions, and conjectured that the $\log_p$ of a Gross-Stark unit can be expressed by $Y_p(τ)$. Dasgupta constructed the symbol $u_T(τ)$ by using the $p$-adic multiplicative integration, and conjectured that a Gross-Stark unit can be expressed by…
In this paper we investigate the image of the $l$-adic representation attached to the Tate module of an abelian variety over a number field with endomorphism algebra of type I or II in the Albert classification. We compute the image explicitly and verify the classical conjectures of Mumford-Tate, Hodge, Lang and Tate, for a large family of abelian varieties of type I and II. In addition, for this family, we prove an analogue of the open image theorem of Serre.
Let $G\subset x{\mathbb F}_q[\![x]\!]$ ($q$ is a power of the prime $p$) be a subset of formal power series over a finite field such that it forms a compact abelian $p$-adic Lie group of dimension $d\ge 1$. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the APF extension of local field corresponding to $\left({\mathbb F}_q(\!(x)\!), G\right)$ under the field of norms functor to be an extension of $p$-adic fields. We then apply this result to study family of invertible power series with coefficients in a $p$-adic integers ring and commute with a fixed noninvertible power series under the…
Mazur, Tate, and Teitelbaum gave a p-adic analogue of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for elliptic curves. We provide a generalization of their conjecture in the good ordinary case to higher dimensional modular abelian varieties over the rationals by constructing the p-adic L-function of a modular abelian variety and showing that it satisfies the appropriate interpolation property. This relies on a careful normalization of the p-adic L-function, which we achieve by a comparison of periods. Our generalization agrees with the conjecture of Mazur, Tate, Teitelbaum in dimension 1 and the …
Let $k$ be a finite field. Wintenberger used the field of norms to give an equivalence between a category whose objects are totally ramified abelian $p$-adic Lie extensions $E/F$, where $F$ is a local field with residue field $k$, and a category whose objects are pairs $(K,A)$, where $K\cong k((T))$ and $A$ is an abelian $p$-adic Lie subgroup of $\Aut_k(K)$. In this paper we extend this equivalence to allow $\Gal(E/F)$ and $A$ to be arbitrary abelian pro-$p$ groups.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $F_{\infty}$ a $p$-adic Lie extension of a number field $F$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety over $F$ which has ordinary reduction at every primes above $p$. Under various assumptions, we establish asymptotic upper bounds for the growth of Mordell-Weil rank of the abelian variety of $A$ in the said $p$-adic Lie extension. Our upper bound can be expressed in terms of invariants coming from the cyclotomic level. Motivated by this formula, we make a conjecture on an asymptotic upper bound of the growth of Mordell-Weil ranks over a $p$-adic Lie extension which is in terms…
This is a revised version of ANT-0332: "A support problem for the intermediate Jacobians of l-adic representations", by G. Banaszak, W. Gajda & P. Krason, which was placed on these archives on the 29th of January 2002. Following a suggestion of the referee we have subdivided the paper into two separate parts: "Support problem for the intermediate Jacobians of l-adic representations", and "On Galois representations for abelian varieties with complex and real multiplications". Our results on the image of Galois and the Mumford-Tate conjecture for some RM abelian varieties are contained in the se…
Let $k$ be a totally real field, and let $A/k$ be an absolutely irreducible, polarized Abelian variety of odd, prime dimension whose endomorphisms are all defined over $k$. Then the only strictly compatible families of abstract, absolutely irreducible representations of $\gal(\ov{k}/k)$ coming from $A$ are tensor products of Tate twists of symmetric powers of two-dimensional $λ$-adic representations plus field automorphisms. The main ingredients of the proofs are the work of Borel and Tits on the `abstract' homomorphisms of almost simple algebraic groups, plus the work of Shimura on the fields…
In this paper, we give explicit descriptions of Hyodo and Kato's Frobenius and Monodromy operators on the first $p$-adic de Rham cohomology groups of curves and Abelian varieties with semi-stable reduction over local fields of mixed characteristic. This paper was motivated by the first author's paper "A $p$-adic Shimura isomorphism and periods of modular forms," where conjectural definitions of these operators for curves with semi-stable reduction were given.
We prove $p$-adic versions of a classical result in arithmetic geometry stating that an irreducible subvariety of an abelian variety with dense torsion has to be the translate of a subgroup by a torsion point. We do so in the context of certain rigid analytic spaces and formal groups over a $p$-adic field $K$ or its ring of integers $R$, respectively. In particular, we show that the rigidity results for algebraic functions underlying the so-called Manin-Mumford Conjecture generalize to suitable $p$-adic analytic functions. In the formal setting, this approach leads us to uncover purely $p$-adi…
We introduce a geometric formalism for studying modular forms of half-integral weight and explore some of its basic properties. Geometric Hecke operators are constructed and some basic spaces of $p$-adic forms are introduced. The $p$-adic theory is greatly expanded in subsequent papers, making that part of this paper largely obsolete.
We study how the $\ell$-adic valuation of the number of spanning trees varies in regular abelian $\ell$-towers of multigraphs. We show that for an infinite family of regular abelian $\ell$-towers of bouquets, the behavior of the $\ell$-adic valuation of the number of spanning trees behave similarly to the $\ell$-adic valuation of the class numbers in $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields.
In this paper we give a bound for the Iwasawa lambda invariant of an abelian number field attached to the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of that field. We also give some properties of Iwaswa power series attached to p-adic L-functions.
The higher rank Lefschetz formula for p-adic groups is used to prove rationality of a several-variable zeta function attached to the action of a p-adic group on its Bruhat-Tits building. By specializing to certain lines one gets one-variable zeta functions, which then can be related to geometrically defined zeta functions
Let $X$ be a proper, smooth, and geometrically connected curve of genus $g(X)\ge 1$ over a $p$-adic local field. We prove that there exists an effectively computable open affine subscheme $U\subset X$ with the property that $period (X)=1$, and $index (X)$ equals $1$ or $2$ (resp. $period(X)=index (X)=1$, assuming $period (X)=index (X)$), if (resp. if and only if) the exact sequence of the geometrically abelian fundamental group of $U$ splits. We compute the torsor of splittings of the exact sequence of the geometrically abelian absolute Galois group associated to $X$, and give a new characteri…
Let $J$ be an abelian variety over a number field such that the center of its endomorphism ring is equal to the ring of integers. If the endomorphism ring splits at a prime number $l$, then the $l$-adic representation is defined by the minuscule weights (microweights) of simple classical Lie algebras.
It is well-known that every finite subgroup of GL_d(Q_{\ell}) is conjugate to a subgroup of GL_d(Z_{\ell}). However, this does not remain true if we replace general linear groups by symplectic groups. We say that G is a group of inertia type if G is a finite group which has a normal Sylow-p-subgroup with cyclic quotient. We show that if \ell>d+1, and G is a subgroup of Sp_{2d}(Q_{\ell}) of inertia type, then G is conjugate in GL_{2d}(Q_{\ell}) to a subgroup of \Sp_{2d}(Z_{\ell}). Despite the fact that G can fail to be conjugate in \GL_{2d}(Q_\ell) to a subgroup of \Sp_{2d}(Z_\ell), we prove th…
In this paper, we define a two-variable analogue of Perrin-Riou's p-adic regulator map for the Iwasawa cohomology of a crystalline representation of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbf{Q}_p$, over a Galois extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$ whose Galois group is an abelian p-adic Lie group of dimension 2. We use this regulator map to study p-adic representations of global Galois groups over certain abelian extensions of number fields whose localisation at the primes above p are extensions of the above type. In the example of the restriction to an imaginary quadratic field of the representation atta…
We establish the Iwasawa main conjecture for semi-stable abelian varieties over a function field of characteristic $p$ under certain restrictive assumptions. Namely we consider $p$-torsion free $p$-adic Lie extensions of the base field which contain the constant $\mathbb Z_p$-extension and are everywhere unramified. Under the classical $μ=0$ hypothesis we give a proof which mainly relies on the interpretation of the Selmer complex in terms of $p$-adic cohomology [TV] together with the trace formulas of [EL1].
Bringmann, Guerzhoy and Kane have shown how to correct mock modular forms by a certain linear combination of the Eichler integral of their shadows in order to obtain p-adic modular forms in the sense of Serre. In this paper, we give a new proof of their results (for good primes p) by employing the geometric theory of harmonic Maass forms developed by the first author and the theory of overconvergent modular forms due to Katz and Coleman.
Let A be an abelian fourfold. We prove the Standard Conjecture of Hodge type for A. By combining this result with a theorem of Clozel we deduce that numerical equivalence on A coincides with l-adic homological equivalence on A for infinitely many l. The approach consists in reformulating this question into a p-adic problem and then using p-adic Hodge Theory to solve it.
Constructing families of abelian varieties of $\text{GL}_2$-type over $4$-punctured complex projective line via $p$-adic Hodge theory and Langlands correspondence and application to algebraic solutions of Painleve VI equation
Let $A$ be a square-free abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. Let $S$ be a density one set of prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ of $\mathcal{O}_K$. A famous theorem of Faltings says that the Frobenius polynomials $P_{A,\mathfrak{p}}(x)$ for $\mathfrak{p}\in S$ determine $A$ up to isogeny. We show that the prime factors of $|A(\mathbb{F}_{\mathfrak{p}})|=P_{A,\mathfrak{p}}(1)$ for $\mathfrak{p}\in S$ also determine $A$ up to isogeny over an explicit finite extension of $K$. The proof relies on understanding the $\ell$-adic monodromy groups which come from the $\ell$-adic Galois representa…
In this note we relate the property of a semisimple l-adic Galois representation being "F-split" for a number field F to its having abelian image. By F-split we mean that the characteristic polynomials of Frobenii all split in F.
We study the behaviour of the Stark conjecture for an abelian extension K/k of totally real number fields as K varies in a cyclotomic Z_p-tower. We consider possible strengthenings of the natural norm-coherence in the tower of putative solution of the complex conjecture and, especially, the consequences for the analogous p-adic conjecture. More precisely, under two principal assumptions - (i) that these solutions are given by exterior powers of norm-coherent sequences of global (or p-semilocal) units and (ii) that p splits in k - we show how the values of p-adic twisted zeta-functions for K/k a…
For a global function field K of positive characteristic p, we show that Artin conjecture for L-functions of geometric p-adic Galois representations of K is true in a non-trivial p-adic disk but is false in the full p-adic plane. In particular, we prove the non-rationality of the geometric unit root L-functions.
