In this paper, we give explicit descriptions of Hyodo and Kato's Frobenius and Monodromy operators on the first $p$-adic de Rham cohomology groups of curves and Abelian varieties with semi-stable reduction over local fields of mixed characteristic. This paper was motivated by the first author's paper "A $p$-adic Shimura isomorphism and periods of modular forms," where conjectural definitions of these operators for curves with semi-stable reduction were given.
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
We define Frobenius and monodromy operators on the de Rham cohomology of $K$-dagger spaces (rigid spaces with overconvergent structure sheaves) with strictly semistable reduction $Y$, over a complete discrete valuation ring $K$ of mixed characteristic. For this we introduce log rigid cohomology and generalize the so called Hyodo-Kato isomorphism to versions for non-proper $Y$, for non-perfect residue fields, for non-integrally defined coefficients, and for the various strata of $Y$. We apply this to define and investigate crystalline structure elements on the de Rham cohomology of Drinfel'd's …
We prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for varieties which are p-adically uniformized by a product of the Drinfeld upper half spaces. It is an easy consequence of Dat's work on the cohomology complex of the Drinfeld upper half space.
Deligne's weight-monodromy conjecture gives control over the poles of local factors of L-functions of varieties at places of bad reduction. His proof in characteristic p was a step in his proof of the generalized Weil conjectures. Scholze developed the theory of perfectoid spaces to transfer Deligne's proof to characteristic 0, proving the conjecture for complete intersections in toric varieties. Building on Scholze's techniques, we prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for complete intersections in abelian varieties.
In this paper we introduce the concept of $\mathit{integral}$ $\mathit{Frobenius}$ to formulate an integral analogue of the classical compatibility condition linking the collection of rational Tate modules $V_λ(A)$ arising from abelian varieties over number fields with real multiplication. Our main result gives a recipe for constructing an integral Frobenius when the real multiplication field has class number one. By exploiting algorithms already existing in the literature, we investigate this construction for three modular abelian surfaces over $\mathbf{Q}$.
Associated to an abelian variety over a number field are several interesting and related groups: the motivic Galois group, the Mumford-Tate group, $\ell$-adic monodromy groups, and the Sato-Tate group. Assuming the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we show that from two well chosen Frobenius polynomials of our abelian variety, we can recover the identity component of these groups (or at least an inner form), up to isomorphism, along with their natural representations. We also obtain a practical probabilistic algorithm to compute these groups by considering more and more Frobenius polynomials; the group…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a finite field $k$ with $|k|=q=p^m$. Let $π\in \text{End}_k(A)$ denote the Frobenius and let $v=\frac{q}π$ denote Verschiebung. Suppose the Weil $q$-polynomial of $A$ is irreducible. When $\text{End}_k(A)=\mathbb{Z}[π,v]$, we construct a matrix which describes the action of $π$ on the prime-to-$p$-torsion points of $A$. We employ this matrix in an algorithm that detects when $p$ is an obstruction to the monogeneity of division fields of certain abelian varieties.
In this paper we study the wild part of the finite monodromy groups of abelian varieties over number fields. We solve Grunwald problems for groups of the form $\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z}\wr \mathfrak{S}_n$ over number fields to build CM abelian varieties with maximal wild finite monodromy in the odd prime case. For the even prime case we prove a new bound on the 2-part of the order of the finite monodromy group for CM abelian varieties and build varieties that reach it.
In this paper we discuss multiplicative relations between eigenvalues of Frobenius endomorphism of abelian varieties of small dimension over finite fields.
By combining theorems of Drinfeld and Strauch, we show that the monodromy representation on the special fibre of a Drinfeld modular variety, with level not divisible by the characteristic, is surjective. We illustrate this result in the special case of Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$-modules in level $t$, and apply this to show that the Kronecker factors of a Drinfeld modular polynomial in rank $r$ are irreducible.
The aim of this paper is to prove the weight-monodromy conjecture (Deligne's conjecture on the purity of monodromy filtration) for varieties p-adically uniformized by the Drinfeld upper half spaces of any dimension. The ingredients of the proof are to prove a special case of the Hodge standard conjecture, and apply a positivity argument of Steenbrink, M. Saito to the weight spectral sequence of Rapoport-Zink. As an application, by combining our results with the results of Schneider-Stuhler, we compute the local zeta functions of p-adically uniformized varieties in terms of representation theor…
We prove that there is a natural plectic weight filtration on the cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties in the spirit of Nekovar and Scholl. This is achieved with the help of Morel's work on weight t-structures and a detailed study of partial Frobenius. We prove in particular that the partial Frobenius extends to toroidal and minimal compactifications.
We formulate and study a torsion analogue of the weight-monodromy conjecture for a proper smooth scheme over a non-archimedean local field. We prove it for proper smooth schemes over equal characteristic non-archimedean local fields, abelian varieties, surfaces, varieties uniformized by Drinfeld upper half spaces, and set-theoretic complete intersections in toric varieties. In the equal characteristic case, our methods rely on an ultraproduct variant of Weil II established by Cadoret.
We prove a large sieve statement for the average distribution of Frobenius conjugacy classes in arithmetic monodromy groups over finite fields. As a first application we prove a stronger version of a result of Chavdarov on the ``generic'' irreducibility of the numerator of the zeta functions in a family of curves with large monodromy.
We study monodromy action on abelian varieties satisfying certain bad reduction conditions. These conditions allow us to get some control over the Galois image. As a consequence we verify the Mumford--Tate conjecture for such abelian varieties.
Let $X_0$ be a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ and let $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ be an irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X_0$. We show that if a subobject of minimal slope of the associated convergent $F$-isocrystal $\mathcal E_0$ admits a non-zero morphism to $\mathcal O_{X_0}$ as a convergent isocrystal, then $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal O^{\dagger}_{X_0}$ as an overconvergent isocrystal. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Kedlaya. The key ingredient in the proof is the study of the monodromy group …
In this paper we determine the number of isomorphism classes of superspecial abelian varieties $A$ over the prime field $\Fp$ such that the relative Frobenius morphism $π_A$ satisfying $π_A^2=-p$.
Using the sieve for Frobenius, we show that, in a certain sense, the roots of the L-functions of "most" algebraic curves over finite fields do not satisfy any non-trivial (linear or multiplicative) rational dependency relations. This can be seen as an analogue of conjectures of linear independence among ordinates of zeros of L-functions over number fields. As a corollary, we find, for "most" pairs of distinct algebraic curves over a finite field, the limiting distribution of the (suitably normalized) difference between the number of rational points over extensions of the ground field. The meth…
We study the special fibers of a certain class of absolutely simple abelian varieties over number fields with endomorphism rings $\bz$ and possessing $l$-adic monodromy groups of the least possible rank. We also study the Dirichlet density of the places at which the possible reductions occur and confirm a special case of a broader conjecture for the splitting of reductions of abelian varieties over number fields.
This primarily expository article collects together some facts from the literature about the monodromy of differential equations on a p-adic (rigid analytic) annulus, though often with simpler proofs. These include Matsuda's classification of quasi-unipotent nabla-modules, the Christol-Mebkhout construction of the ramification filtration, and the Christol-Dwork Frobenius antecedent theorem. We also briefly discuss the p-adic local monodromy theorem without proof.
We assign functorially a $\mathbb{Z}$-lattice with semisimple Frobenius action to each abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$. This establishes an equivalence of categories that describes abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_p$ avoiding $\sqrt{p}$ as an eigenvalue of Frobenius in terms of simple commutative algebra. The result extends the isomorphism classification of Waterhouse and Deligne's equivalence for ordinary abelian varieties.
For a family of varieties, we prove that the alternating sum of the traces of "local" monodromy acting on the $\ell$-adic étale cohomology groups of the generic fiber is an integer which is independent of $\ell$.
We show a Lefschetz theorem for irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on smooth varieties defined over a finite field. We derive several consequences from it.
We show that for a large class of rings $R$, the number of principally polarized abelian varieties over a finite field in a given simple ordinary isogeny class and with endomorphism ring $R$ is equal either to 0, or to a ratio of class numbers associated to $R$, up to some small computable factors. This class of rings includes the maximal order of the CM field $K$ associated to the isogeny class (for which the result was already known), as well as the order $R$ generated over $\mathbf{Z}$ by Frobenius and Verschiebung. For this latter order, we can use results of Louboutin to estimate the appr…
We examine the relationship between the notion of Frobenius splitting and ordinarity for varieties. We show the following: a) The de Rham-Witt cohomology groups $H^i(X, W({\mathcal O}_X))$ of a smooth projective Frobenius split variety are finitely generated over $W(k)$. b) we provide counterexamples to a question of V. B. Mehta that Frobenius split varieties are ordinary or even Hodge-Witt. c) a Kummer $K3$ surface associated to an Abelian surface is $F$-split (ordinary) if and only if the associated Abelian surface is $F$-split (ordinary). d) for a $K3$-surface defined over a number field, t…
In this paper, we seek an appropriate definition for a Shimura curve of Hodge type in positive characteristics, i.e. a characterization, in terms of geometry mod p, of curves in positive characteristics which are reduction of Shimura curves over the complex field. Specifically, we study the liftablity of a curve in moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties over k, char k=p. We show that some conditions on the l-adic monodromy over such a curve imply that this curve can be lifted to a Shimura curve.
Let $A_g$ be an abelian variety of dimension $g$ and $p$-rank $λ\leq 1$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We compute the number of homomorphisms from $π_1^{\text{ét}}(A_g,a)$ to $GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$, where $q$ is any power of $p$. We show that for fixed $g$, $λ$, and $n$, the number of such representations is polynomial in $q$, and give an explicit formula for this polynomial. We show that the set of such homomorphisms forms a constructible set, and use the geometry of this space to deduce information about the coefficients and degree of the polynomial. In the last sec…
