The Shafarevich conjecture for a class of varieties over a number field posits the finitude of those with good reduction outside a finite set of primes. In the case of hypersurfaces in the torus $\mathbb{G}_m^n$, a natural class to consider are those with a fixed Newton polyhedron that are nondegenerate with respect to it. Using an approach similar to that of Lawrence-Sawin for abelian varieties (arXiv:2004.09046), we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for certain classes of Newton polyhedra. In the course of our proof we construct a fiber functor for the Tannakian category of perverse sheaves on the torus in positive characteristic and compute the weights of the Frobenius on it, which leads to the big monodromy results which are key to this method.
In this short note, we deduce the classical Néron--Ogg--Shafarevich criterion on good reduction of abelian varieties from its archimedean analogue: a holomorphic family of abelian varieties over a punctured disc extends to the whole unit disc if and only if the topological monodromy representation is trivial.
A multinorm one torus associated to a commutative étale algebra $L$ over a global field $k$ is of Kummer type if each factor of $L$ is a cyclic Kummer extension. In this paper we compute the Tate-Shafarevich group of such tori based on recent works of Bayer-Fluckiger, T.-Y. Lee and Parimala, and of T.-Y.~Lee. We also implement an effective algorithm using SAGE which computes the Tate-Shafarevich groups when each factor of $L$ is contained in a fixed concrete bicyclic extension of $k$.
Let k be a global field and L be a finite dimensional étale algebra over k. In this paper, we assume that L is a product of cyclic extensions of k. Let T_{L/k} be the multinorm-one torus defined by the multinorm equation: N_{L/k} (t) = 1. Let X_c be the variety defined by the equation N_{L/k} (t) = c, for some c in k*. In this paper, we compute the Tate-Shafarevich group and the algebraic Tate-Shafarevich group of the character group of T_{L/k}. These groups measure the obstruction to the local-global principle for existence of rational points of X_c and the obstruction to the weak appraximati…
We study local-global questions for Galois cohomology over the function field of a curve defined over a p-adic field (a field of cohomological dimension 3). We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of the base field coming from a closed point of the curve. In the case of a torus we establish a perfect duality between the first Tate-Shafarevich group of the torus and the second Tate-Shafarevich group of the dual torus. As an application, we show that the failure of the local-global principle for rational points on …
Let $X_0$ be a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ and let $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ be an irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X_0$. We show that if a subobject of minimal slope of the associated convergent $F$-isocrystal $\mathcal E_0$ admits a non-zero morphism to $\mathcal O_{X_0}$ as a convergent isocrystal, then $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal O^{\dagger}_{X_0}$ as an overconvergent isocrystal. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Kedlaya. The key ingredient in the proof is the study of the monodromy group …
Let $K$ be the function field of a smooth projective curve $X$ over a higher-dimensional local field $k$. We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K$ coming from a closed point of $X$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes, for tori, for groups of multiplicative type, and even for 2-term complexes of tori. We apply these results to the weak approximation for tori over $K$ and to the study of the obstruction to the local-global principle for $K$-torsors under a …
Let $T$ be an algebraic torus defined over a global field $K$. For any $K$-torsor $X$ under $T$, we relate the Brauer group of $X$ to the adéle class group of $T$ as well as to the Shafarevich Tate group of $T$.
We show that certain Tate--Shafarevich groups are unramified which enables us to give an obstruction to the Hasse principle for torsors under tori over p-adic function fields.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field, a finite field or a $p$-adic field. Let $K_0=k((x,y))$ be the field of Laurent series in two variables over $k$. We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme over $K_0$ via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K_0$ coming from a codimension 1 point of $\text{Spec}\; k[[x,y]]$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes and for tori. We apply these results to the study of the obstruction to the local-global principle for $K_0$-torsors under a connected linear algebraic …
Deligne's weight-monodromy conjecture gives control over the poles of local factors of L-functions of varieties at places of bad reduction. His proof in characteristic p was a step in his proof of the generalized Weil conjectures. Scholze developed the theory of perfectoid spaces to transfer Deligne's proof to characteristic 0, proving the conjecture for complete intersections in toric varieties. Building on Scholze's techniques, we prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for complete intersections in abelian varieties.
We formulate and study a torsion analogue of the weight-monodromy conjecture for a proper smooth scheme over a non-archimedean local field. We prove it for proper smooth schemes over equal characteristic non-archimedean local fields, abelian varieties, surfaces, varieties uniformized by Drinfeld upper half spaces, and set-theoretic complete intersections in toric varieties. In the equal characteristic case, our methods rely on an ultraproduct variant of Weil II established by Cadoret.
We exhibit geometric conditions on a family of toric hypersurfaces under which the value of a canonical normal function at a point of maximal unipotent monodromy is irrational.
Let X be a smooth curve over a finite field of characteristic p, let E be a number field, and consider an E-compatible system of lisse sheaves on the curve X. For each place lambda of E not lying over p, the lambda-component of the system is a lisse E_lambda-sheaf on X, whose associated arithmetic monodromy group is an algebraic group over the local field E_lambda. We use Serre's theory of Frobenius tori and Lafforgue's proof of Deligne's conjecture to show that when the E-compatible system is semisimple and pure of some integer weight, the isomorphism type of the identity component of these m…
Using the sieve for Frobenius, we show that, in a certain sense, the roots of the L-functions of "most" algebraic curves over finite fields do not satisfy any non-trivial (linear or multiplicative) rational dependency relations. This can be seen as an analogue of conjectures of linear independence among ordinates of zeros of L-functions over number fields. As a corollary, we find, for "most" pairs of distinct algebraic curves over a finite field, the limiting distribution of the (suitably normalized) difference between the number of rational points over extensions of the ground field. The meth…
Let $k$ be a field and $T$ be an algebraic $k$-torus. In 1969, over a global field $k$, Voskresenskii proved that there exists an exact sequence $0\to A(T)\to H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\,\overline{X})^\vee\to Sha(T)\to 0$ where $A(T)$ is the kernel of the weak approximation of $T$, $Sha(T)$ is the Shafarevich-Tate group of $T$, $X$ is a smooth $k$-compactification of $T$, $\overline{X}=X\times_k\overline{k}$, ${\rm Pic}\,\overline{X}$ is the Picard group of $\overline{X}$ and $\vee$ stands for the Pontryagin dual. On the other hand, in 1963, Ono proved that for the norm one torus $T=R^{(1)}_{K/k}(G_m)$ o…
