We study monodromy action on abelian varieties satisfying certain bad reduction conditions. These conditions allow us to get some control over the Galois image. As a consequence we verify the Mumford--Tate conjecture for such abelian varieties.
This survey describe Hodge, Tate and Mumford-Tate conjectures for abelian varieties. After some preliminaries on endomorphism ring, polarization and algebraic cycles, we state the three conjectures and provide a list of know results. Finally, we explain some links between these conjectures.
The Mumford-Tate conjecture is first proved for CM abelian varieties by H. Pohlmann [Ann. Math., 1968]. In this note we give another proof of this result and extend it to CM motives.
Let $X$ be a non-singular projective variety over a number field $K$, $i$ a non-negative integer, and $V_{\A}$, the etale cohomology of $\bar X$ with coefficients in the ring of finite adeles $\A_f$ over $\Q$. Assuming the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we formulate a conjecture (Conjecture 1.2) describing the largeness of the image of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ in $H(\A_f)$ under the adelic Galois representation $ρ_{\A}: G_K -> \Aut(V_{\A})=\GL_n(\A_f)$, where $H$ is the Hodge group. The motivating example is a celebrated theorem of Serre, which asserts that if $X$ is an elliptic curve without…
We classify the possible Mumford-Tate groups of polarizable rational Hodge structures. Along the way we deduce a polarized Hodge-theoretic analogue of a conjectural property of motivic Galois groups suggested by Serre.
We prove the Mumford-Tate conjecture for those abelian varieties over number fields, whose simple factors of their adjoint Mumford-Tate groups have over $\dbR$ certain (products of) non-compact factors. In particular, we prove this conjecture for the orthogonal case ($B_n$ and $D_n^{\dbR}$ Shimura types). We construct embeddings of Shimura varieties of (whose adjoints are of prescribed abelian type) into unitary Shimura varieties. We also prove two general theorems involving Frobenius tori of abelian varieties over number fields.
We investigate to what extent an abelian variety over a finite field can be lifted to one in characteristic zero with small Mumford-Tate group. We prove that supersingular abelian surfaces, respectively threefolds, can be lifted to ones isogenous to a square, respectively product, of elliptic curves. On the other hand, we show that supersingular abelian threefolds cannot be lifted to one isogenous to the cube of an elliptic curve over the Witt vectors.
Let K be a number field and A an abelian variety over K. We are interested in the following conjecture of Morita: if the Mumford-Tate group of A does not contain unipotent Q-rational points then A has potentially good reduction at any discrete place of K. The Mumford-Tate group is an object of analytical nature whereas having good reduction is an arithmetical notion, linked to the ramification of Galois representations. This conjecture has been proved by Morita for particular abelian varieties with many endomorphisms (called of PEL type). Noot obtained results for abelian varieties without non…
We show that the statement analogous to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties holds for 1-motives on unipotent parts. This is done by comparing the unipotent part of the associated Hodge group and the unipotent part of the image of the absolute Galois group with the unipotent part of the motivic fundamental group. Contains an appendix by P. Deligne. In this version: Minor corrections here and there. The Main result about the image of the Galois representations is now enriched by an adelic statement.
We introduce $\ell$-Galois special subvarieties as an $\ell$-adic analog of the Hodge-theoretic notion of a special subvariety. The Mumford-Tate conjecture predicts that both notions are equivalent. We study some properties of these subvarieties and prove this equivalence for subvarieties satisfying a simple monodromy condition. As applications, we show that the $\ell$-Galois exceptional locus is a countable union of algebraic subvarieties and, if the derived group of the generic Mumford-Tate group of a family is simple, its part of positive period dimension coincides with the Hodge locus of p…
We study the image of $\ell$-adic representations attached to subvarieties of Shimura varieties $Sh_K(G,X)$ that are not contained in a smaller Shimura subvariety and have no isotrivial components. We show that, for $\ell$ large enough (depending on the Shimura datum $(G,X)$ and the subvariety), such image contains the $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points coming from the simply connected cover of the derived subgroup of $G$. This can be regarded as a geometric version of the integral $\ell$-adic Mumford-Tate conjecture.
Let $Y$ be an abelian variety over a subfield $k \subset \mathbb{C}$ that is of finite type over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove that if the Mumford-Tate conjecture for $Y$ is true, then also some refined integral and adelic conjectures due to Serre are true for $Y$. In particular, if a certain Hodge-maximality condition is satisfied, we obtain an adelic open image theorem for the Galois representation on the (full) Tate module of $Y$. Our second main result is an (unconditional) adelic open image theorem for K3 surfaces. The proofs of these results rely on the study of a natural representation of the …
We prove the Mumford--Tate conjecture for those abelian varieties over number fields whose extensions to C have attached adjoint Shimura varieties that are products of simple, adjoint Shimura varieties of certain Shimura types. In particular, we prove the conjecture for the orthogonal case (i.e., for the $B_n$ and $D_n^R$ Shimura types). As a main tool, we construct embeddings of Shimura varieties (whose adjoints are) of prescribed abelian type into unitary Shimura varieties of PEL type. These constructions implicitly classify the adjoints of Shimura varieties of PEL type.
We introduce a tensor decomposition of the $\ell$-adic Tate module of an abelian variety $A_0$ defined over a number field which is geometrically isotypic. If $A_0$ is potentially of $\GL_2$-type and defined over a totally real number field, we use this decomposition to describe its Sato--Tate group and to prove the Sato--Tate conjecture in certain cases.
We study the special fibers of a certain class of absolutely simple abelian varieties over number fields with endomorphism rings $\bz$ and possessing $l$-adic monodromy groups of the least possible rank. We also study the Dirichlet density of the places at which the possible reductions occur and confirm a special case of a broader conjecture for the splitting of reductions of abelian varieties over number fields.
We show that, for an abelian variety defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ which has potential good reduction, its torsion subgroup with values in the composite field of $K$ and a certain Lubin-Tate extension over a $p$-adic field is finite.
We consider Tate cycles on an Abelian variety $A$ defined over a sufficiently large number field $K$ and having complex multiplication. We show that there is an effective bound $C = C(A,K)$ so that to check whether a given cohomology class is a Tate class on $A$, it suffices to check the action of Frobenius elements at primes $v$ of norm $ \leq C$. We also show that for a set of primes $v$ of $K$ of density 1, the space of Tate cycles on the special fibre $A_v$ of the Néron model of $A$ is isomorphic to the space of Tate cycles on $A$ itself.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K, the number of torsion points rational over a finite extension L is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree [L : K]. When A is isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I or II in Albert classification and is "fully of Lefschetz type", i.e. whose Mumford-Tate group is the group of symplectic similitudes commuting with endomorphisms and which satisfy the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound in terms of the dimensions of the abelian subvarieties of A and their rings of endomorphisms.…
In this expository article we explore the relationship between Galois representations, motivic L-functions, Mumford-Tate groups, and Sato-Tate groups, and we give an explicit formulation of the Sato-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties as an equidistribution statement relative to the Sato-Tate group. We then discuss the classification of Sato-Tate groups of abelian varieties of dimension g <= 3 and compute some of the corresponding trace distributions. This article is based on a series of lectures presented at the 2016 Arizona Winter School held at the Southwest Center for Arithmetic Geometry…
Let $F$ be a totally real field in which a fixed prime $p$ is inert, and let $E$ be a CM extension of $F$ in which $p$ splits. We fix two positive integers $r,s \in \mathbb N$. We investigate the Tate conjecture on the special fiber of $G(U(r,s) \times U(s,r))$-Shimura variety. We construct cycles which we conjecture to generate the Tate classes and verify our conjecture in the case of $G(U(1,s) \times U(s,1))$. We also discuss the general conjecture regarding special cycles on the special fibers of unitary Shimura varieties.
We make explicit a construction of Serre giving a definition of an algebraic Sato-Tate group associated to an abelian variety over a number field, which is conjecturally linked to the distribution of normalized L-factors as in the usual Sato-Tate conjecture for elliptic curves. The connected part of the algebraic Sato-Tate group is closely related to the Mumford-Tate group, but the group of components carries additional arithmetic information. We then check that in many cases where the Mumford-Tate group is completely determined by the endomorphisms of the abelian variety, the algebraic Sato-T…
Let $F$ be a totally real field in which a prime number $p>2$ is inert. We continue the study of the (generalized) Goren--Oort strata on quaternionic Shimura varieties over finite extensions of $\mathbb F_p$. We prove that, when the dimension of the quaternionic Shimura variety is even, the Tate conjecture for the special fiber of the quaternionic Shimura variety holds for the cuspidal $π$-isotypical component, as long as the two unramified Satake parameters at $p$ are not differed by a root of unity.
Associated to an abelian variety over a number field are several interesting and related groups: the motivic Galois group, the Mumford-Tate group, $\ell$-adic monodromy groups, and the Sato-Tate group. Assuming the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we show that from two well chosen Frobenius polynomials of our abelian variety, we can recover the identity component of these groups (or at least an inner form), up to isomorphism, along with their natural representations. We also obtain a practical probabilistic algorithm to compute these groups by considering more and more Frobenius polynomials; the group…
Given an abelian variety J and an abelian subvariety A of J over a number field K, we study the visible elements of the Shafarevich-Tate group of A with respect to J over certain number field extension M of K. The notion of visible elements in Shafarevich-Tate group of an abelian variety was introduced by Mazur. In this article, we study the image of Visible elements of A with respect to J under the natural restriction map of the Galois cohomology of A over K to the Galois cohomology of A over M. In particular, for a fixed odd prime p, we investigate the conditions under which visible elements…
A generalized Tate curve is a universal family of curves with fixed genus and degeneration data which becomes Schottky uniformized Riemann surfaces and Mumford curves by specializing moduli and deformation parameters. By considering each generalized Tate curve as a family of degenerating Riemann surfaces, we give explicit formulas of the period isomorphism between its de Rham and Betti cohomology groups, and of the associated objects: Gauss-Manin connection, variation of Hodge structure and monodromy weight filtration. A remarkable fact is that similar formulas hold also for families of Mumfor…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be a totally real number field that is Galois over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $π$ be a cuspidal, nondihedral automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_E)$ that is in the lowest weight discrete series at every real place of $E$. The representation $π$ cuts out a "motive" $M_\mathrm{et}(π^{\infty})$ from the $\ell$-adic middle degree intersection cohomology of an appropriate Hilbert modular variety. If $\ell$ is sufficiently large in a sense that depends on $π$ we compute the dimension of the space of Tate classes in $M_\mathrm{et}(π^{\infty})$. Moreover if the space …
Let $K/F$ be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$, let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $F$, and let ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ K}})$ and ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ F}})$ denote, respectively, the Tate-Shafarevich groups of $A$ over $K$ and of $A$ over $F$. Assuming that these groups are finite, we derive, under certain restrictions on $A$ and $K/F$, a formula for the order of the subgroup of ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ K}})$ of $G$-invariant elements. As a corollary, we obtain a simple formula relating the orders of ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ K}})$, ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ F}})$ and ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ F}}^χ)…
Tate's theorem (Invent. Math. 1966)implies that the Tate conjecture holds for any abelian variety over a finite field whose Q_l-algebra of Tate classes is generated by those of degree 1. We construct families of abelian varieties over finite fields for which this condition fails, but for which we are nevertheless able to prove the Tate conjecture.
In two earlier articles, we proved that, if the Hodge conjecture is true for ALL CM abelian varieties over the complex numbers, then both the Tate conjecture and the standard conjectures are true for abelian varieties over finite fields. Here we rework the proofs so that they apply to a single abelian variety. As a consequence, we prove (unconditionally) that the Tate and standard conjectures are true for many abelian varieties over finite fields, including abelian varieties for which the algebra of Tate classes is not generated by divisor classes.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field $F$ and let $p$ be a prime. Cohen-Lenstra-Delaunay-style heuristics predict that the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A_s$ should contain an element of order $p$ for a positive proportion of quadratic twists $A_s$ of $A$. We give a general method to prove instances of this conjecture by exploiting independent isogenies of $A$. For each prime $p$, there is a large class of elliptic curves for which our method shows that a positive proportion of quadratic twists have nontrivial $p$-torsion in their Tate-Shafarevich groups. In particular, when the modul…
In this mostly expository note, we explain a proof of Tate's two conjectures [Tat65] for algebraic cycles of arbitrary codimension on certain products of elliptic curves and abelian surfaces over number fields.
Along the lines of Hodge and Tate conjectures, Beilinson conjectured that in the qth cohomology all the weight 2q Hodge cycles of a smooth complex variety and all the weight 2q Tate cycles of a smooth variety over a finitely generated field comes from the higher Chow groups. For product of curves and semiabelian varieties, Beilinson-Hodge conjecture was shown in a previous paper by the authors. Here both Beilinson-Hodge and Beilinson-Tate conjectures are shown to be true for varieties dominated by product of curves. We also show that lower weight Hodge cycles (resp. Tate cycles) are algebraic …
Let $p$ be a prime. Tate and Voloch proved that a point of finite order in the algebraic torus cannot be $p$-adically too close to a fixed subvariety without lying on it. The current work is motivated by the analogy between torsion points on semi-abelian varieties and special or CM points on Shimura varieties. We prove the analog of Tate and Voloch's result in a power of the modular curve Y(1) on replacing torsion points by points corresponding to a product of elliptic curves with complex multiplication and ordinary reduction. Moreover, we show that the assumption on ordinary reduction is nece…
We prove $p$-adic versions of a classical result in arithmetic geometry stating that an irreducible subvariety of an abelian variety with dense torsion has to be the translate of a subgroup by a torsion point. We do so in the context of certain rigid analytic spaces and formal groups over a $p$-adic field $K$ or its ring of integers $R$, respectively. In particular, we show that the rigidity results for algebraic functions underlying the so-called Manin-Mumford Conjecture generalize to suitable $p$-adic analytic functions. In the formal setting, this approach leads us to uncover purely $p$-adi…
The aim of this paper is to prove a theorem of Ax-Lindemann type for complex semi-abelian varieties as an application of a big Picard theorem proved by the author in 1981, and then apply it to prove a theorem of classical Manin-Mumford Conjecture for semi-abelian varieties, which was proved by M. Raynaud 1983, M. Hindry 1988, ....., and Pila-Zannier 2008 by a different method from others, which is most relevant to our's. The present result might be a first instance of a direct connection between the value distribution theory of holomorphic maps and the arithmetic (Diophantine) theory over alge…
We prove a finiteness theorem for the first flat cohomology group of finite flat group schemes over integral normal proper varieties over finite fields. As a consequence, we can prove the invariance of the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of Abelian schemes over higher dimensional bases under isogenies and alterations over/of such bases for the $p$-part. Along the way, we generalize previous results on the Tate-Shafarevich group in this situation.
We give a short proof of the "prime-to-$p$ version" of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for an abelian variety over a number field, when it has supersingular reduction at a prime dividing $p$, by combining the methods of Bogomolov, Hrushovski, and Pink-Roessler. Our proof here is quite simple and short, and neither $p$-adic Hodge theory nor model theory is used. The observation is that a power of a lift of the Frobenius element at a supersingular prime acts on the prime-to-$p$ torsion points via nontrivial homothety.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$, the number of torsion points rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$. When $A$ is isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of $\GSp$ type, i.e. whose Mumford-Tate group is "generic" (isomorphic to the group of symplectic similitudes) and which satisfy the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound in terms of the dimensions of the abelian subvarieties of $A$. The result is unconditional for a product of simple abelian varieties with endomorph…
We investigate boundedness results for families of holomorphic symplectic varieties up to birational equivalence. We prove the analogue of Zarhin's trick by for $K3$ surfaces by constructing big line bundles of low degree on certain moduli spaces of stable sheaves, and proving birational versions of Matsusaka's big theorem for holomorphic symplectic varieties. As a consequence of these results, we give a new geometric proof of the Tate conjecture for $K3$ surfaces over finite fields of characteristic at least $5$, and a simple proof of the Tate conjecture for $K3$ surfaces with Picard number a…
We study the formal neighbourhood of a point in $μ$-ordinary locus of an integral model of a Hodge type Shimura variety. We show that this formal neighbourhood has a structure of a shifted cascade. Moreover we show that the CM points on the formal neighbourhood are dense and that the identity section of the shifted cascade corresponds to a lift of the abelian variety which has a characterization in terms of its endomorphisms in analogy with the Serre-Tate canonical lift of an ordinary abelian variety.
In this paper we prove a special case of the André-Oort conjecture for Kuga varieties. If $M$ is a Kuga variety fibred over a pure Shimura variety $S$ as an abelian scheme, and $(M_n)$ is a sequence of special subvarieties in $M$ which are faithfully flat over $S$, then the Zariski closure of the union of the $M_n$'s is a finite union of special subvarieties faithfully flat over $S$. The proof is reduced to a variant of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for abelian schemes.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. The number of torsion points that are rational over a finite extension $L$ is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree $[L:K]$ of $L$ over $K$. Under the following three conditions, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound, in terms of the dimension of abelian subvarieties and their endomorphism rings. The three hypothesis are the following: $(1)$ $A$ is geometrically isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I, II or III, according to the Albert classification; $(2)$ $A$ is of "Lefschetz type", that is, t…
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
We show that there exist non-trivial families of algebraic varieties for which all the fibers above rational points (or even above points of odd degree) are torsors of abelian varieties representing nonzero elements of their Shafarevich-Tate groups.
