It is known that the etale cohomology of a potentially good abelian variety over a local field K is determined by its Euler factors over the extensions of K. We extend this to all abelian varieties, show that it is enough to take extensions where A is semistable, and give a uniform version over p-adic fields where the extensions are the same for all abelian varieties of a given dimension. The results are explicit, and apply to a wide class of Weil-Deligne representations.
Let q be an odd power of a prime p and let A/Fq be a supersingular abelian variety of dimension g. We show that if p>2g+1, then the characteristic polynomial of the q-Frobenius is an even polynomial. This generalizes the well-known result on the vanishing of the trace of the p-Frobenius when p>3 for supersingular elliptic curves over Fp.
Using properties of the Frobenius eigenvalues, we show that, in a precise sense, ``most'' isomorphism classes of (principally polarized) simple abelian varieties over a finite field are characterized up to isogeny by the sequence of their division fields, and a similar result for ``most'' isogeny classes. Some global cases are also treated.
We continue work of Gekeler and others on elliptic curves over ${\mathbb F}_q(T)$ with conductor $\infty\cdot{\mathfrak n}$ where ${\mathfrak n}\in{\mathbb F}_q[T]$ has degree 3. Because of the Frobenius isogeny there are infinitely many curves in each isogeny class, and we discuss in particular which of these curves is the strong Weil curve with respect to the uniformization by the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0({\mathfrak n})$. As a corollary we obtain that the strong Weil curve $E/{\mathbb F}_q(T)$ always gives a rational elliptic surface over $\bar{{\mathbb F}_q}$.
We show that a Frobenius-semisimple Weil representation over a local field K is determined by its Euler factors over the extensions of K. The construction is explicit, and we illustrate it for l-adic representations attached to elliptic and genus 2 curves. As an application, we construct an absolutely simple 2-dimensional abelian variety over Q all of whose quadratic twists must have positive rank, according to the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
We study the family of elliptic curves $y^2=x(x-a^2)(x-b^2)$ parametrized by Pythagorean triples $(a,b,c)$. We prove that for a generic triple the lower bound of the rank of the Mordell-Weil group over $\mathbb{Q}$ is 1, and for some explicitly given infinite family the rank is 2. To each family we attach an elliptic surface fibered over the projective line. We show that the lower bounds for the rank are optimal, in the sense that for each generic fiber of such an elliptic surface its corresponding Mordell-Weil group over the function field $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ has rank 1 or 2, respectively. In ord…
Given a Weil-Deligne representation with coefficients in a domain, we prove the rigidity of the structures of the Frobenius-semisimplifications of the Weyl modules associated to its pure specializations. Moreover, we show that the structures of the Frobenius-semisimplifications of the Weyl modules attached to a collection of pure representations are rigid if these pure representations lift to Weil-Deligne representations over domains containing a domain $\mathscr{O}$ and a pseudorepresentation over $\mathscr{O}$ parametrizes the traces of these lifts.
We push further the classical proof of Weil upper bound for the number of rational points of an absolutely irreducible smooth projective curve $X$ over a finite field in term of euclidean relationships between the Neron Severi classes in $X\times X$ of the graphs of iterations of the Frobenius morphism. This allows us to recover Ihara's bound, which can be seen as a {\em second order} Weil upper bound, to establish a new {\em third order} Weil upper bound, and using {\tt magma} to produce numerical tables for {\em higher order} Weil upper bounds. We also give some interpretation for the defect…
We prove the plectic conjecture of Nekovář-Scholl over global function fields $Q$. For example, when the cocharacter is defined over $Q$ and the structure group is a Weil restriction from a geometric degree $d$ separable extension $F/Q$, consider the complex computing $\ell$-adic intersection cohomology with compact support of the associated moduli space of shtukas over $Q_I$. We endow this with the structure of a complex of $\DeclareMathOperator{\Weil}{Weil}(\Weil(F)^d\rtimes\mathfrak{S}_d)^I$-modules, which extends its structure as a complex of $\Weil(Q)^I$-modules constructed by Arinkin-Gai…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a finite field $k$ with $|k|=q=p^m$. Let $π\in \text{End}_k(A)$ denote the Frobenius and let $v=\frac{q}π$ denote Verschiebung. Suppose the Weil $q$-polynomial of $A$ is irreducible. When $\text{End}_k(A)=\mathbb{Z}[π,v]$, we construct a matrix which describes the action of $π$ on the prime-to-$p$-torsion points of $A$. We employ this matrix in an algorithm that detects when $p$ is an obstruction to the monogeneity of division fields of certain abelian varieties.
For a scheme $X$ defined over the length $2$ $p$-typical Witt vectors $W_2(k)$ of a characteristic $p$ field, we introduce total $p$-differentials which interpolate between Frobenius-twisted differentials and Buium's $p$-differentials. They form a sheaf over the reduction $X_0$, and behave as if they were the sheaf of differentials of $X$ over a deeper base below $W_2(k)$. This allows us to construct the analogues of Gauss-Manin connections and Kodaira-Spencer classes as in the Katz-Oda formalism. We make connections to Frobenius lifts, Borger-Weiland's biring formalism, and Deligne--Illusie c…
In this paper we give a module-theoretic description of the isomorphism classes of abelian varieties $A$ isogenous to $B^r$, where the characteristic polynomial $g$ of Frobenius of $B$ is an ordinary square-free $q$-Weil polynomial, for a power $q$ of a prime $p$, or a square-free $p$-Weil polynomial with no real roots. Under some extra assumptions on the polynomial $g$ we give an explicit description of all the isomorphism classes which can be computed in terms of fractional ideals of an order in a finite product of number fields. In the ordinary case, we also give a module-theoretic descript…
Frobenius problem and its many generalizations have been extensively studied in several areas of mathematics. We study semigroups of totally positive algebraic integers in totally real number fields, defining analogues of the Frobenius numbers in this context. We use a geometric framework recently introduced by Aliev, De Loera and Louveaux to produce upper bounds on these Frobenius numbers in terms of a certain height function. We discuss some properties of this function, relating it to absolute Weil height and obtaining a lower bound in the spirit of Lehmer's conjecture for algebraic vectors …
We construct the Weil-étale cohomology and Euler characteristics for a subclass of the class of $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaves on the spectrum of the ring of integers of a totally imaginary number field. Then we show that the special value of an Artin L-function of toric type at zero is given by the Weil-étale Euler characteristic of an appropriate $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaf up to signs. As applications of our result, we will derive some classical formulas of special values of L-functions of tori and their class numbers.
We study the number of rational points of smooth projective curves over finite fields in some relative situations in the spirit of a previous paper from an euclidean point of vue. We prove some kinds of relative Weil bounds, derived from Schwarz inequality for some "relative parts" of the diagonal and of the graph of the Frobenius on some euclidean sub-spaces of the numerical space of the squared curve endowed with the opposite of the intersection product.
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic cohomology groups of rigid spaces over local fields. We prove that every eigenvalue of the action is a Weil number when either a rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. Since a smooth rigid space is locally isomorphic to the Raynaud generic fiber of an algebraizable formal scheme, we can use the techniques of alterations and monodromy spectral sequences in the smooth case. In the general case, we use the continuity theorem of Huber, which requires the restriction on the characteri…
Let E/F be a quadratic extension of p-adic fields. The local Langlands correspondence establishes a bijection between n-dimensional Frobenius semisimple representations of the Weil-Deligne group of E and smooth, irreducible representations of GL(n,E). We reinterpret this bijection in the setting of the Weil restriction of scalars Res(GL(n),E/F), and show that the Asai L-function and epsilon factor on the analytic side match up with the expected Artin L-function and epsilon factor on the Galois side. This paper is based off of the author's forthcoming doctoral thesis.
Let C be a smooth irreducible projective curve defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of q elements of characteristic p>3 and $K=\mathbb{F}_{q}(C)$ its function field and $ϕ_{\mathcal{E}}:\mathcal{E}\to C$ the minimal regular model of $\mathbf{E}/K$. For each $P\in C$ denote $\mathcal{E}_P=ϕ^{-1}_{\mathcal{E}}(P)$. The elliptic curve $E/K$ has good reduction at $P\in C$ if and only if $\mathcal{E}_P$ is an elliptic curve defined over the residue field $κ_P$ of $P$. This field is a finite extension of $\mathbb{F}_q$ of degree $°(P)$. Let $t(\mathcal{E}_P)=q^{°(P)}+1-#\mathcal{E}_P(κ_P)$ b…
If E is a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over a global function field F of odd characteristic we show that certain Mordell-Weil groups of E have 1-dimensional eigenspace relative to a fixed complex ring class character provided that the projection onto this eigenspace of a suitable Drinfeld-Heegner point is nonzero. This represents the analogue in the function field setting of a theorem for rational elliptic curves due to Bertolini and Darmon, and at the same time is a generalization of the main result proved by Brown in his monograph on Heegner modules. As in the number field case, our proof e…
Let $X$ be a smooth proper variety of even dimension $d$ over a finite field. We establish a restriction on the value at $(-1)$ of the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius on the middle-dimensional étale cohomology of $X$ with coefficients in ${\mathbb Q}_l(d/2)$.
We use Hodge theory to prove a new upper bound on the ranks of Mordell-Weil groups for elliptic curves over function fields after regular geometrically Galois extensions of the base field, improving on previous results of Silverman and Ellenberg, when the base field has characteristic zero and the supports of the conductor of the elliptic curve and of the ramification divisor of the extension are disjoint.
We would like to construct a new Grothendieck topology for arithmetic schemes, whose cohomology groups associated with motivic complexes of sheaves are finitely generated and whose Euler characteristics are related to special values of zeta-functions. In this paper we construct this topology for rings of algebraic integers and show that the cohomology of the constant sheaf Z is related to the behavior of zeta-functions at s = 0.
We extend existing results characterizing Weil-Châtelet divisibility of locally trivial torsors over number fields to global fields of positive characteristic. Building on work of González-Avilés and Tan, we characterize when local-global divisibility holds in such contexts, providing examples showing that these results are optimal. We give an example of an elliptic curve over a global field of characteristic $2$ containing a rational point which is locally divisible by $8$, but is not divisible by $8$ as well as examples showing that the analogous local-global principle for divisibility in th…
In this note, we investigate the p-adic behavior of Weil numbers in the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z\_p$-extension of $\mathbb Q(ζ\_p).$ We determlne the characteristic ideal of the quotient of semi-local units by Weil numbers in terms of the characteristic ideals of some classical modules that appear in Iwasawa Theory.
We present a hardware-accelerated computation of Hasse-Weil invariants of all hyperelliptic curves of given genus over a fixed finite field. Our main motivation is the determination of traces of Frobenius on cohomology corresponding moduli stacks à la Bergström-Faber-van-der-Geer. This paper also constitutes a case study of the performance of lookup table based Zech arithmetic on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). GPUs are by now ubiquitous in numerics, to an extend that their development itself is propelled by scientific computing. Algebraic computing has profited very little from the advancem…
Using the Shioda-Tate theorem and an adaptation of Silverman's specialization theorem, we reduce the specialization of Mordell-Weil ranks for abelian varieties over fields finitely generated over infinite finitely generated fields $k$ to the the specialization theorem for Néron-Severi ranks recently proved by Ambrosi in positive characteristic. More precisely, we prove that after a blow-up of the base surface $S$, for all vertical curves $S_x$ of a fibration $S \to U \subseteq \mathbf{P}^1_k$ with $x$ from the complement of a sparse subset of $|U|$, the Mordell-Weil rank of an abelian scheme o…
We prove a conjecture of Udo Riese about the minimal ring of definition for principal series Weil characters of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$, for $p$ an odd prime. More precisely, we show that the $(p+1)/2$-dimensional Weil characters can be realized over the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\varepsilon p})$, where $\varepsilon =(-1)^{(p-1)/2}$, and we provide explicit integral models over these quadratic rings. We do so by studying the Galois action on the integral models of Weil characters recently discovered by Yilong Wang.
Hasse-Weil zeta functions of SL_2-character varieties of arithmetic two bridge link groups are determined. Special values of the zeta functions at s=0,1,2 are also investigated.
Given two pure representations of the absolute Galois group of an $\ell$-adic number field with coefficients in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p$ (with $\ell\neq p$), we show that the Frobenius-semisimplifications of the associated Weil--Deligne representations are twists of each other by an integral power of certain unramified character if they have equal normalized traces. This is an analogue of a recent result of Patankar and Rajan in the context of local Galois representations.
We develop a simple algebraic approach to the study of the Weil representation associated to a finite abelian group. As a result, we obtain a simple proof of a generalisation of a well-known formula for the absolute value of its character. We also obtain a new result about its decomposition into irreducible representations. As an example, the decomposition of the Weil representation of Sp_{2g}(Z/NZ) is described for odd N.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. If $\mathfrak{p}$ is a prime of $K$ of good reduction for $A$, let $A(K)_\mathfrak{p}$ denote the image of the Mordell-Weil group via reduction modulo $\mathfrak{p}$. We prove in particular that the size of $A(K)_\mathfrak{p}$, by varying $\mathfrak{p}$, encodes enough information to determine the $K$-isogeny class of $A$, provided that the following necessary condition is satisfied: $B(K)$ has positive rank for every non-trivial abelian subvariety $B$ of $A$. This is the analogue to a result by Faltings of 1983 considering instead…
It is proved that the Hasse-Weil zeta functions of the canonical components of the ${\rm SL}_2$ (${\rm PSL}_2$)-character varieties of closed orientable complete hyperbolic $3$-manifolds of finite volume are equal to the Dedekind zeta functions of their trace fields (invariant trace fields). When the closed $3$-manifold is arithmetic, the special value at $s=2$ of the Hasse-Weil zeta function of the canonical component of the ${\rm PSL}_2$-character variety is expressed in terms of the hyperbolic volume of the manifold up to rational numbers.
In this paper we construct a new variant of the Weil representation, associated with a symplectic vector space V defined over a finite field of characteristic two. Our variant is a representation of a bigger group than that of Weil. In the course, we develop the formalism of canonical vector spaces, which enables us to realize the bigger symmetry group and the representation in a transparent manner.
Consider an irreducible, admissible representation $π$ of GL(2,$F$) whose restriction to GL(2,$F)^+$ breaks up as a sum of two irreducible representations $π_+ + π_-$. If $π=r_θ$, the Weil representation of GL(2,$F$) attached to a character $θ$ of $K^*$ which does not factor through the norm map from $K$ to $F$, then $χ\in \hat{K^*}$ with $(χ>. θ^{-1})|_{F^{*}}=ω_{K/F}$ occurs in ${r_θ}_+$ if and only if $ε(θχ^{-1},ψ_0)=ε(\bar θχ^{-1},ψ_0)=1$ and in ${r_θ}_-$ if and only if both the epsilon factors are -1. But given a conductor $n$, can we say precisely how many such $χ$ will appear in $π$? We…
We establish a Siegel-Weil formula for classical groups over a function field with odd characteristic, which asserts in many cases that the Siegel Eisenstein series is equal to an integral of a theta function. This is a function-field analogue of the classical result proved by A. Weil in his 1965 Acta Math. paper. We also give a convergence criterion for the theta integral by using Harder's reduction theory over function fields.
We study the elliptic curves given by $y^2 = x^3 + b x + t^{3^n+1}$ over global function fields of characteristic $3$; in particular we perform an explicit computation of the $L$-function by relating it to the zeta function of a certain superelliptic curve $u^3 + b u = v^{3^n + 1}$. In this way, using the Néron-Tate height on the Mordell--Weil group, we obtain lattices in dimension $2 \cdot 3^n$ for every $n \geq 1$, which improve on the currently best known sphere packing densities in dimensions 162 (case $n=4$) and 486 (case $n=5$). For $n=3$, the construction has the same packing density as…
We construct the Weil-étale cohomology and Euler characteristics for a subclass of the class of $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaves on an open subscheme of the spectrum of the ring of integers of a number field. Then we show that the special value of an Artin L-function of toric type at zero is given by the Weil-étale Euler characteristic of an appropriate $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaf up to signs. As applications of our result, we will prove a formula for the special value of the L-function of an algebraic torus at zero which is similar to Ono's Tamagawa Number Formula.
The lattice model of the Weil representation over non-archimedean local field $F$ of odd residual characteristic has been known for decades, and is used to prove the Howe duality conjecture for unramified dual pairs when the residue characteristic of $F$ is odd. In this paper, we will modify the lattice model of the Weil representation so that it is defined independently of the residue characteristic. Although to define the lattice model alone is not enough to prove the Howe duality conjecture for even residual characteristic, we will propose a couple of conjectural lemmas which imply the Howe…
Let $F$ be a finite field, $μ$ be a fixed additive character and $s$ be an integer coprime to $|F^\times|$. For any $a\in F$, the corresponding Weil sum is defined to be $W_{F,s}(a)=\displaystyle\sum_{x \in F} μ(x^s-ax)$. The Weil spectrum counts distinct values of the Weil sum as $a$ runs through the invertible elements in the finite field. The value of these sums and the size of the Weil spectrum are of particular interest, as they link problems in coding and information theory to other areas of math such as number theory and arithmetic geometry. In the setting of Niho exponents, we examine …
Given F a locally compact, non-discrete, non-archimedean field of characteristic different from 2 and R an integral domain such that a non-trivial smooth F-character with values in the multiplicative group of R exists, we construct the (reduced) metaplectic group attached to R. We show that it is in most cases a double cover of the symplectic group over F. Finally we define a faithful infinite dimensional R-representation of the metaplectic group analogue to the Weil representation in the complex case.
Let $V$ be a finite abelian group of odd order, equipped with a non-degenerate, alternating form $ω\colon V\times V \to \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. We give closed formulas for the character values of the Weil representation associated with $(V,ω)$. These formulas generalize the ones given by S. Gurevich and R. Hadani (2007) and by T. Thomas (2008, 2013) from finite vector spaces to abelian groups. Our formulas do not involve the choice of a Lagrangian subgroup of $V$. Our proofs are based on an elementary algebraic approach introduced by H. N. Ward (1972, 2017) for finite vector spaces over field…
We show that the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n,F), where F is a non-archimedian local field, can be realized over the field obtained from the rationals by adjoining the square roots of p and -p, where p is the residue characteristic of F; p is assumed to be odd.
The Hasse-Weil bound is a deep result in mathematics and has found wide applications in mathematics, theoretical computer science, information theory etc. In general, the bound is tight and cannot be improved. However, for some special families of curves the bound could be improved substantially. In this paper, we focus on the Hasse-Weil bound for the curve defined by $y^p-y=f(x)$ over the finite field $\F_q$, where $p$ is the characteristic of $\F_q$. Recently, Kaufman and Lovett \cite[FOCS2011]{KL11} showed that the Hasse-Weil bound can be improved for this family of curves with $f(x)=g(x)+h…
For an elliptic curve $E$ over any field $K$, the Weil pairing $e_n$ is a bilinear map on $n$-torsion. For $K$ of characteristic $p>0$, the map $e_n$ is degenerate if and only if $n$ is divisible by $p$. In this paper, we consider $E$ over the dual numbers $K[ε]$ and define a non-degenerate ``Weil pairing on $p$-torsion" which shares many of the same properties of the Weil pairing. We also show that the discrete logarithm attacks on $p$-torsion subgroups of Semaev and Rück may be viewed as Weil-pairing-based attacks, just like the MOV attack. Finally, we describe an attack on the discrete loga…
Jacobi forms can be considered as vector valued modular forms, and Jacobi forms of critical weight correspond to vector valued modular forms of weight $\frac12$. Since the only modular forms of weight $\frac12$ on congruence subgroups of $\SL$ are theta series the theory of Jacobi forms of critical weight is intimately related to the theory of Weil representations of finite quadratic modules. This article explains this relation in detail, gives an account of various facts about Weil representations which are useful in this context, and it gives some applications of the theory developed herein …
Frobenius Traces for Rank-2 Drinfeld Modules, Higher-Dimensional Galois Representations, and a Strong Multiplicity One Theorem in Positive Characteristic
If $X$ is a smooth scheme over a perfect field of characteristic $p$, and if $\sD_X$ is the sheaf of differential operators on $X$ [EGAIV], it is well known that giving an action of $\sD_X$ on an $\sO_X$-module $\sE$ is equivalent to giving an infinite sequence of $\sO_X$-modules descending $\sE$ via the iterates of the Frobenius endomorphism of $X$. We show that this result can be generalized to any infinitesimal deformation $f : X \to S$ of a smooth morphism in characteristic $p$, endowed with Frobenius liftings. We also show that it extends to adic formal schemes such that $p$ belongs to an…
