Let $k$ be a totally real field, and let $A/k$ be an absolutely irreducible, polarized Abelian variety of odd, prime dimension whose endomorphisms are all defined over $k$. Then the only strictly compatible families of abstract, absolutely irreducible representations of $\gal(\ov{k}/k)$ coming from $A$ are tensor products of Tate twists of symmetric powers of two-dimensional $λ$-adic representations plus field automorphisms. The main ingredients of the proofs are the work of Borel and Tits on the `abstract' homomorphisms of almost simple algebraic groups, plus the work of Shimura on the fields of moduli of Abelian varieties.
We investigate the relation between p-adic Galois representations and overconvergent (phi,Gamma)-modules in families. Especially we construct a natural open subspace of a family of (phi,Gamma)-modules, over which it is induced by a family of Galois-representations.
This note explores the consequences of Koenigsmann's model theoretic argument from the proof of the birational p-adic section conjecture for curves in the context of higher dimensional varieties over p-adic local fields.
In this paper we develop a theory of class invariants associated to $p$-adic representations of absolute Galois groups of number fields. Our main tool for doing this involves a new way of describing certain Selmer groups attached to $p$-adic representations in terms of resolvends associated to torsors of finite group schemes.
Geometric properties of homomorphisms between the absolute Galois groups of mixed-characteristic complete discrete valuation fields with perfect residue fields
We study Galois representations attached to nonsimple abelian varieties over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. We give sufficient conditions for such representations to decompose as a product, and apply them to prove arithmetical analogues of results shown by Moonen and Zarhin in the context of complex abelian varieties (of dimension at most 5).
We give a direct approach to recover some of the results of Wiles and Tayor on modularity of certain 2-dimensional p-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of Q.
Let $K$ be a finite field extension of $Q_p$ and let $G_K$ be its absolute Galois group. We construct the universal family of filtered $(ϕ,N)$-modules, or (more generally) the universal family of $(ϕ,N)$-modules with a Hodge-Pink lattice, and study its geometric properties. Building on this, we construct the universal family of semi-stable $G_K$-representations in $Q_p$-algebras. All these universal families are parametrized by moduli spaces which are Artin stacks in schemes or in adic spaces locally of finite type over $Q_p$ in the sense of Huber. This has conjectural applications to the $p$-…
In this paper we investigate the image of the $l$-adic representation attached to the Tate module of an abelian variety over a number field with endomorphism algebra of type I or II in the Albert classification. We compute the image explicitly and verify the classical conjectures of Mumford-Tate, Hodge, Lang and Tate, for a large family of abelian varieties of type I and II. In addition, for this family, we prove an analogue of the open image theorem of Serre.
The $\ell$-adic Galois polylogarithm is an arithmetic function on an absolute Galois group with values in $\ell$-adic numbers, which arises from Galois actions on $\ell$-adic étale paths on ${\mathbb P}^1 \backslash \{0,1,\infty\}$. In the present paper, we discuss a relationship between $\ell$-adic Galois polylogarithms and triple $\ell$-th power residue symbols in some special cases studied by a work of Hirano-Morishita. We show that a functional equation of $\ell$-adic Galois polylogarithms by Nakamura-Wojtkowiak implies a reciprocity law of triple $\ell$-th power residue symbols.
Let $p$ be a prime number. There are properties called ``overconvergence'' and ``$F$-analyticity'' for $p$-adic Galois representations of a $p$-adic field $F$. By Berger's work, it is known that $F$-analyticity is stricter than overconvergence. In this article, we show that, in many cases, an overconvergent Galois representation is $F$-analytic up to a twist by a character. This result emphasizes the necessity of the theory of $(φ,Γ)$-modules over the multivariable Robba ring, by which we expect to study all $p$-adic Galois representations.
We investigate a certain class of (geometric) finite (Galois) coverings of formal fibres of $p$-adic curves and the corresponding quotient of the (geometric) étale fundamental group. A key result in our investigation is that these (Galois) coverings can be compactified to finite (Galois) coverings of proper $p$-adic curves. We also prove that the maximal prime-to-$p$ quotient of the geometric étale fundamental group of a (geometrically connected) formal fibre of a $p$-adic curve is (pro-)prime-to-$p$ free of finite computable rank.
We prove that the density of ramified primes in semisimple p-adic representations of Galois groups of number fields is 0. Ravi Ramakrishna has produced examples of such representations that are infinitely ramified.
Let $K$ be a number field not containing a CM subfield. For any smooth projective curve $Y/K$ of genus $\geq2$, we prove that the image of the "Selmer" part of Grothendieck's section set inside the $K_v$-rational points $Y(K_v)$ is finite for every finite place $v$. This gives an unconditional verification of a prediction of Grothendieck's section conjecture. In the process of proving our main result, we also refine and extend the method of Lawrence and Venkatesh, with potential consequences for explicit computations.
Let $X$ be a smooth connected algebraic curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. We study the deformation of $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the function field of $X$ while keeping the local Galois representations at all places undeformed.
We study the Galois symbol map associated to the multiplicative group and an abelian variety which has good ordinary reduction over a $p$-adic field. As a byproduct, one can calculate the "class group" in the view of the class field theory for curves over a $p$-adic field.
We show that the l-adic realizations of certain Picard 1-motives associated to a G-Galois cover of smooth, projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field are G-cohomologically trivial, for all primes l. In the process, we generalize a well-known theorem of Nakajima on the Galois module structure of certain spaces of Kahler differentials associated to the top curve of the cover, assuming that the field of definition is of characteristic p. If the cover and the Picard 1-motive are defined over a finite field and if G is abelian, we compute the first Fitting ideal of each l-adic rea…
In this note we produce examples of converging sequences of Galois representations, and study some of their properties. Some of the results here are used in the preprint math.NT/0210296.
We are studing Galois actions on fundamental groups. Using towers of coverings we construct measures on the products of finite copies of Z_p. Using these measures we can calculate coefficients of Galois representations. In the simplest case of measures on Z_p, we get Kubota_Leopoldt p-adic L-functions and p-adic Hurwitz zeta functions.
For any simple algebraic group $G$ of exceptional type, we construct geometric $\ell$-adic Galois representations with algebraic monodromy group equal to $G$, in particular producing the first such examples in types $\mathrm{F}_4$ and $\mathrm{E}_6$. To do this, we extend to general reductive groups Ravi Ramakrishna's techniques for lifting odd two-dimensional Galois representations to geometric $\ell$-adic representations.
For a global function field K of positive characteristic p, we show that Artin conjecture for L-functions of geometric p-adic Galois representations of K is true in a non-trivial p-adic disk but is false in the full p-adic plane. In particular, we prove the non-rationality of the geometric unit root L-functions.
In this paper we show that two dimensional (mod p) Galois representations satisfying mild hypotheses can be lifted to p-adic Galois representations ramified at infinitely many primes such that the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius at a density one set of unramified primes are defined over the rational integers. In particular we show that often one can "density one compatibly" lift mod p and mod q Galois representations.
We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for residually reducible Galois representations of unitary type in which the residual representation is permitted to have an arbitrary number of irreducible constituents.
We construct various explicit Herr complexes that compute the Galois cohomology of a $p$-adic representation of the absolute Galois group of a complete discrete valuation field of characteristic $0$ with a perfect residue field of characteristic $p$, using the associated $(φ,τ)$-modules (defined by Xavier Caruso), instead of $(φ,Γ)$-modules. We also give an application to $p$-divisible groups.
The fact that the double zeta values at n and m can be written as a sum of products of two zeta values and of zeta value at m+n, whenever n+m is odd is due to Euler. We shall show a weak version of this result for the Galois l-adic realization.
Let $K$ be a $p$-adic field and $E$ an elliptic curve over $K$ with potential good reduction. For some large Galois extensions $L$ of $K$ containing all $p$-power roots of unity, we show the vanishing of certain Galois cohomology groups of $L$ with values in the $p$-adic representation associated with $E$. This generalizes some results of Coates, Sujatha and Wintenberger.
We describe the generic blocks in the category of smooth locally admissible mod $2$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_2)$. As an application we obtain new cases of Breuil--Mézard and Fontaine--Mazur conjectures for $2$-dimensional $2$-adic Galois representations.
Let $K$ be a complete, discretely valued field with finite residue field and $G_K$ its absolute Galois group. The subject of this note is the study of the set of positive integers $d$ for which there exists an absolutely irreducible $\ell$-adic representation of $G_K$ of dimension $d$ with rational traces on inertia. Our main result is that non-Sophie Germain primes are not in this set when the residue characteristic of $K$ is $> 3$. The result stated in the title is a special case.
In this note, we consider function fields of higher-dimensional algebraic varieties defined over non-local fields, and show how the Galois action on the cohomology such function fields can be used to parameterize their divisorial valuations. By applying a recent theorem of Pop, we observe that, in dimension $\geq 3$, this information is enough to completely determine the function field and the base-field in question.
We consider limits of p-adic Galois representations, study different notions of convergence for such representations, and prove Cebotarev-type density theorems for them.
We present a family of algorithms for computing the Galois group of a polynomial defined over a $p$-adic field. Apart from the "naive" algorithm, these are the first general algorithms for this task. As an application, we compute the Galois groups of all totally ramified extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_2$ of degrees 18, 20 and 22, tables of which are available online.
For a $p$-adic local field $K$ with perfect residue field, L. Herr constructed a complex which computes the Galois cohomology of a $p$-torsion representation of the absolute Galois group of $K$ by using the theory of $(Φ,Γ)$-modules. We shall generalize his work to the imperfect residue field (the residue field has a finite $p$-basis) case.
Let K be a complete discrete valuation field of mixed characteristic (0,p) with perfect residue field. Let (π_n)_{n\ge 0} be a system of p-power roots of a uniformizer π=π_0 of K with π^p_{n+1}=π_n, and define G_s (resp.\ G_{\infty}) the absolute Galois group of K(π_s) (resp.\ K_{\infty}:=\bigcup_{n\ge 0} K(π_n)). In this paper, we study G_s-equivatiantness properties of G_{\infty}-equivariant homomorphisms between torsion (potentially) crystalline representations
We prove modularity of some two dimensional, 2-adic Galois representations over totally real fields that are nearly ordinary and that are residually dihedral. We do this by employing the strategy of Skinner and Wiles, using Hida families, together with the 2-adic patching method of Khare and Wintenberger. As an application we deduce modularity of some elliptic curves over totally real fields that have good ordinary or multiplicative reduction at places above 2.
The Galois action on the pro-$\ell$ étale fundamental groupoid of the projective line minus three points with rational base points gives rise to a non-commutative formal power series in two variables with $\ell$-adic coefficients, called the $\ell$-adic Galois associator. In the present paper, we focus on how Landen's functional equation of trilogarithms and its $\ell$-adic Galois analog can be derived algebraically from the $S_3$-symmetry of the projective line minus three points. Twofold proofs of the functional equation will be presented, one is based on Zagier's tensor criterion devised in…
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over a local field $K$ with residue characteristic $3$, we investigate the action of the absolute Galois group of $K$ in the case of potentially good reduction. In particular the only not completely known case is that of the $\ell$-adic Galois representation attached to an elliptic curve such that the image of inertia is non-cyclic, and isomorphic to $C_3 \rtimes C_4$. In this work we describe such a representation explicitly.
Let V be a p-adic representation of the absolute Galois group G of Q_p that becomes crystalline over a finite tame extension, and assume p odd. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for V to be isomorphic to the Tate module V_p(A) of an abelian variety A defined over Q_p. These conditions are stated on the filtered (ϕ,G)-module attached to V.
Drinfeld-modules and $A$-motives are the function field analogous of elliptic curves and abelian varieties. For the latter one can construct the $l$-adic Galois representation and can ask if its image is open. For Drinfeld-modules this question was answered by Pink and his coauthors. We clarify the rank one case for $A$-motives and show that the image of Galois is open if and only if the virtual dimension is prime to the characteristic of the ground field.
By work of C. Greither and B. Pareigis as well as N. P. Byott, the enumeration of Hopf-Galois structures on a Galois extension of fields with Galois group $G$ may be reduced to that of regular subgroups of $\mbox{Hol}(N)$ isomorphic to $G$ as $N$ ranges over all groups of order $|G|$, where $\mbox{Hol}(-)$ denotes the holomorph. In this paper, we shall give a description of such subgroups of $\mbox{Hol}(N)$ in terms of bijective crossed homomorphisms $G\longrightarrow N$, and then use it to study two questions related to non-existence of Hopf-Galois structures.
In this article we prove a local Riemman-Hurwitz formula which compares the dimensions of the spaces of vanishing cycles in a finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between formal germs of p-adic curves and which generalises the formula proven by the first author in the case of Galois covers of degree p. We also investigate the problem of the existence of a torsor structure for a finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between p-adic schemes.
Pink has given a qualitative answer to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for Drinfeld modules in the 90s. He showed that the image of the v-adic Galois representation is v-adically open in the motivic Galois group for any prime v. In contrast to this result, we provide a family of uniformizable Anderson t-modules for which the Galois representations of their t-adic Tate-modules are "far from" having t-adically open image in their motivic Galois groups. Nevertheless, the image is still Zariski-dense in the motivic Galois group which is in accordance to the Mumford-Tate conjecture. For the proof, we e…
We introduce a notion of inertial equivalence for integral $\ell$-adic representation of the Galois group of a global field. We show that the collection of continuous, semisimple, pure $\ell$-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of a global field lifting a fixed absolutely irreducible residual representation and with given inertial type outside a fixed finite set of places is uniformly bounded independent of the inertial type.
A result due to R. Greenberg gives a relation between the cardinality of Selmer groups of elliptic curves over number fields and the characteristic power series of Pontryagin duals of Selmer groups over cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extensions at good ordinary primes $p$. We extend Greenberg's result to more general $p$-adic Galois representations, including a large subclass of those attached to $p$-ordinary modular forms of level $Γ_0(N)$ with $p\nmid N$.
We take some initial steps towards illuminating the (hypothetical) $p$-adic local Langlands functoriality principle relating Galois representations of a $p$-adic field $L$ and admissible unitary Banach space representations of $G(L)$ when $G$ is a split reductive group over $L$. The outline of our work is derived from Breuil's remarkable insights into the nature of the correspondence between 2-dimensional crystalline Galois representations of the Galois group of $\Qdss_p$ and Banach space representations of $GL_{2}(\Qdss_p)$.
We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for essentially conjugate self-dual Galois representations into $GL_n$. Existing theorems require that the residual representation have 'big' image, in a certain technical sense. Our theorems are based on a strengthening of the Taylor-Wiles method which allows one to weaken this hypothesis.
One-point compactification turns real vector spaces into spheres. In homotopy theory, this transformation gets encoded in a map called the "real J-homomorphism". Here we define and investigate p-adic J-homomorphisms, which sort of turn p-adic vector spaces into spheres. Our main theorem is a product formula for these J-homomorphisms, saying what happens when you start with a rational vector space. This formula specializes to Hilbert's version of the quadratic reciprocity law after applying second homotopy groups.
We define a pro-$p$ Abelian sheaf on a modular curve of a fixed level $N \geq 5$ divisible by a prime number $p \neq 2$. Every $p$-adic representation of $\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ associated to an eigenform is obtained as a quotient of its étale cohomology. For any compact $\mathbb{Z}_p[[1 + N \mathbb{Z}_p]]$-algebra $Λ_1$ satisfying certain suitable conditions, we construct a representation of $\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ over $Λ_1$ associated to a $Λ_1$-adic cuspidal eigenform of finite slope as a scalar extension of a quotient of the étale cohomology.
We consider continuous representations of the Galois group G of a number field K taking values in the completion C of an algebraic closure A of the field of l-adic numbers. We give a construction of irreducible representations of G in GL(2,C) which cannot be conjugated into GL(2,A) but for which there exist density-one sets of primes with Frobenius traces in A. We also show that any such representation must be ramified at infinitely many primes of K.
For an odd prime number $p$, we consider degree $p$ extensions $L/K$ of $p$-adic fields with normal closure $\widetilde{L}$ such that the Galois group of $\widetilde{L}/K$ is the dihedral group of order $2p$. We shall prove a complete characterization of the freeness of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ over its associated order $\mathfrak{A}_{L/K}$ in the unique Hopf-Galois structure on $L/K$, which is analogous to the one already known for cyclic degree $p$ extensions of $p$-adic fields. We shall derive positive and negative results on criteria for the freeness of $\mathcal{O}_L$ as $\mat…
We show how our p-adic method to compute Galois representations occurring in the torsion of Jacobians of algebraic curves can be adapted to modular curves. The main ingredient is the use of "moduli-friendly" Eisenstein series introduced by Makdisi, which allow us to evaluate modular forms at p-adic of modular curves points and dispenses us of the need for equations of modular curves and for q-expansion computations. The resulting algorithm compares very favourably to the complex-analytic method.
Let E be an elliptic curve over Q, and rho_l: Gal(Q) --> GL_2(Z_l) its l-adic Galois representation. Serre observed that for l>3 there is no proper closed subgroup of SL_2(Z_l) that maps surjectively onto SL_2(Z/lZ), and concluded that if rho_l is surjective mod l then it is surjective onto GL_2(Z_l). We show that this no longer holds for l=3 by describing a modular curve X of genus 0 parametrizing elliptic curves for which rho_3 is not surjective mod 9 but generically surjective mod 3. The curve X is defined over Q, and the modular cover X --> X(1) has degree 27 so X is rational. We exhibit a…
The Tate conjecture has two parts: i) Tate classes are linear combination of algebraic classes, ii) semisimplicity of Galois representations (for smooth projective varieties). B. Moonen proved that i) implies ii) in characteristic 0, using $p$-adic Hodge theory. We show that an unconditional result lies behind this implication: the {\it observability} of arithmetic monodromy groups of geometric origin (in any characteristic) - which leads to a sharpening of Moonen's result. We also discuss another aspect of the Tate conjecture related to the transcendence of $p$-adic periods.
