We show that if we add any number of Cohen reals to the ground model then, in the generic extension, a locally compact scattered space has at most (2^{aleph_0})^V many levels of size omega. We also give a complete ZFC characterization of the cardinal sequences of regular scattered spaces. Although the classes of the regular and of the 0-dimensional scattered spaces are different, we prove that they have the same cardinal sequences.
We present two different types of models where, for certain singular cardinals lambda of uncountable cofinality, lambda -> (lambda, omega+1)^2, although lambda is not a strong limit cardinal. We announce, here, and will present in a subsequent paper, that, for example, consistently, aleph_{omega_1} not-> (aleph_{omega_1}, omega+1)^2 and consistently, 2^{aleph_0} not-> (2^{aleph_0},omega +1)^2 .
Given an inner model $W \subset V$ and a regular cardinal $κ$, we consider two alternatives for adding a subset to $κ$ by forcing: the Cohen poset $Add(κ,1)$, and the Cohen poset of the inner model $Add(κ,1)^W$. The forcing from $W$ will be at least as strong as the forcing from $V$ (in the sense that forcing with the former adds a generic for the latter) if and only if the two posets have the same cardinality. On the other hand, a sufficient condition is established for the poset from $V$ to fail to be as strong as that from $W$. The results are generalized to $Add(κ,λ)$, and to iterations of…
In this paper we first formulate several ``combinatorial principles'' concerning kappa \times omega matrices of subsets of omega and prove that they are valid in the generic extension obtained by adding any number of Cohen reals to any ground model V, provided that the parameter kappa is an omega-inaccessible regular cardinal in V. Then we present a large number of applications of these principles, mainly to topology. Some of these consequences had been established earlier in generic extensions obtained by adding omega_2 Cohen reals to ground models satisfying CH, mostly for the case kappa=ome…
In this paper we investigate more characterizations and applications of $δ$-strongly compact cardinals. We show that, for a cardinal $κ$ the following are equivalent: (1) $κ$ is $δ$-strongly compact, (2) For every regular $λ\ge κ$ there is a $δ$-complete uniform ultrafilter over $λ$, and (3) Every product space of $δ$-Lindelöf spaces is $κ$-Lindelöf. We also prove that in the Cohen forcing extension, the least $ω_1$-strongly compact cardinal is a precise upper bound on the tightness of the products of two countably tight spaces.
Let $κ$ be an infinite cardinal. Then, forcing with $\mathbb{R}(κ)$$\times$$\mathbb{R}(κ)$ adds a generic filter for $\mathbb{C}(κ);$ where $\mathbb{R}(κ)$ and $\mathbb{C}(κ)$ are the forcing notions for adding $κ$-many random reals and adding $κ$-many Cohen reals respectively.
Using a theorem from pcf theory, we show that for any singular cardinal nu, the product of the Cohen forcing notions on kappa, kappa < nu adds a generic for the Cohen forcing notion on nu^+. This solves Problem 5.1 in Miller's list (attributed to Rene David and Sy Friedman).
In this paper we produce models $V_1\subseteq V_2$ of set theory such that adding $κ$-many Cohen reals to $V_2$ adds $λ$-many Cohen reals to $V_1$, for some $λ>κ$. We deal mainly with the case when $V_1$ and $V_2$ have the same cardinals.
Our goal is to study the pseudo-intersection and tower numbers on uncountable regular cardinals, whether these two cardinal characteristics are necessarily equal, and related problems on the existence of gaps. First, we prove that either $\mathfrak p(κ)=\mathfrak t(κ)$ or there is a $(\mathfrak p(κ),λ)$-gap of club-supported slaloms for some $λ< \mathfrak p(κ)$. While the existence of such gaps is unclear, this is a promising step to lift Malliaris and Shelah's proof of $\mathfrak p=\mathfrak t$ to uncountable cardinals. We do analyze gaps of slaloms and, in particular, show that $\mathfrak p(…
We study certain Banach spaces that are added in the extension by one Cohen real. Specifically, we show that adding just one Cohen real to any model adds a Banach space of density $\aleph_1$ which does not embed into any such space in the ground model such a Banach space can be chosen to be UG This has consequences on the the isomorphic universality number for Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$, which is hence equal to $\aleph_2$ in the standard Cohen model and the same is true for UG spaces. Analogous universality results for Banach spaces are true for other cardinals, by a different proof.
The purpose of the paper is to produce models V_1 \subset V_2 such that adding kappa-many Cohen reals to V_2 adds lambda Cohen reals to V_1. Some of the results: 1. Suppose that V satisfies GCH, kappa = \cup kappa_n= \cup o(kappa_n). Then there is a cardinal preserving generic extension V_1 of V satisfying GCH and having the same reals as V does , so that adding kappa many Cohen reals over V_1 produces kappa^+ Cohen reals over V. 2. Suppose that V is a model of GCH. Then there is a cofinality preserving extension V_1 satisfying GCH so that adding a Cohen real to V_1 produces aleph_1 Cohen real…
We investigate some versions of amoeba for tree-forcings in the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. This answers [10, Question 3.20] and generalizes a line of research that in the standard case has been studied in [11], [13], and [7]. Moreover, we also answer questions posed in [3] by Friedman, Khomskii, and Kulikov, about the relationships between regularity properties at uncountable cardinals. We show $Σ_1^1$-counterexamples to some regularity properties related to trees without club splitting. In particular we prove a strong relationship between the Ramsey and the Baire properties, in slig…
We associate to every equicharacteristic zero Noetherian local ring $R$ a faithfully flat ring extension which is an ultraproduct of rings of various prime characteristics, in a weakly functorial way. Since such ultraproducts carry naturally a non-standard Frobenius, we can define a new tight closure operation on $R$ by mimicking the positive characteristic functional definition of tight closure. This approach avoids the use of generalized Néron Desingularization and only relies on Rotthaus' result on Artin Approximation in characteristic zero. If $R$ is moreover equidimensional and universall…
Foreman proved the Duality Theorem, which gives an algebraic characterization of certain ideal quotients in generic extensions. As an application he proved that generic supercompactness of $ω_1$ is preserved by any proper forcing. We generalize portions of Foreman's Duality Theorem to the context of generic extender embeddings and ideal extenders (as introduced by Claverie in his PhD Thesis, Universitat Munster, 2010). As an application we prove that if $ω_1$ is generically strong, then it remains so after adding any number of Cohen subsets of $ω_1$; however many other $ω_1$-closed posets---su…
We show that if 2^{aleph_0} Cohen reals are added to the universe, then for every reduced non-free torsion-free abelian group A of cardinality less than the continuum, there is a prime p so that Ext_p(A, Z) not= 0. In particular if it is consistent that there is a supercompact cardinal, then it is consistent (even with weak CH) that every coseparable group is free. The use of some large cardinal hypothesis is needed.
Introducing unfoldable cardinals last year, Andres Villaveces ingeniously extended the notion of weak compactness to a larger context, thereby producing a large cardinal notion, unfoldability, with some of the feel and flavor of weak compactness but with a greater consistency strength. Specifically, kappa is theta-unfoldable when for any transitive structure M of size kappa that contains kappa as an element, there is an elementary embedding j:M-->N with critical point kappa for which j(kappa) is at least theta. Define that kappa is fully unfoldable, then, when it is theta-unfoldable for every …
All spaces are assumed to be infinite Hausdorff spaces. We call a space "anti-Urysohn" $($AU in short$)$ iff any two non-emty regular closed sets in it intersect. We prove that $\bullet$ for every infinite cardinal $κ$ there is a space of size $κ$ in which fewer than $cf(κ)$ many non-empty regular closed sets always intersect; $\bullet$ there is a locally countable AU space of size $κ$ iff $ω\le κ\le 2^{\mathfrak c}$. A space with at least two non-isolated points is called "strongly anti-Urysohn" $($SAU in short$)$ iff any two infinite closed sets in it intersect. We prove that $\bullet$ if $X…
Much recent work in cardinal characteristics has focused on generalizing results about $ω$ to uncountable cardinals by studying analogues of classical cardinal characteristics on the generalized Baire and Cantor spaces $κ^κ$ and $2^κ$. In this note I look at generalizations to other function spaces, focusing particularly on the space of functions $f:ω^ω\to ω^ω$. By considering classical cardinal invariants on Baire space in this setting I derive a number of "higher dimensional" analogues of such cardinals, ultimately introducing 18 new cardinal invariants, alongside a framework that allows for…
The Necessary Maximality Principle for c.c.c. forcing asserts that any statement about a real in a c.c.c. extension that could become true in a further c.c.c. extension and remain true in all subsequent c.c.c. extensions, is already true in the minimal extension containing the real. We show that this principle is equiconsistent with the existence of a weakly compact cardinal.
Large cardinals arising from the existence of arbitrarily long end elementary extension chains over models of set theory are studied here. In particular, we show that the large cardinals obtained that way (`Unfoldable cardinals') behave as a `boundary' between properties consistent with `V=L' and existence of indiscernibles. We also provide an `embedding characterisation' of the unfoldable cardinals and study their preservation and destruction by various different forcings.
We study the values of the higher dimensional cardinal characteristics for sets of functions $f:ω^ω\to ω^ω$ introduced by the second author. We prove that while the bounding numbers for these cardinals can be strictly less than the continuum, the dominating numbers cannot. We compute the bounding numbers for the higher dimensional relations in many well known models of $\neg\mathsf{CH}$ such as the Cohen, random and Sacks models and, as a byproduct show that, with possibly one exception, for the bounding numbers there are no $\mathsf{ZFC}$ relations between them beyond those in the higher dime…
If an extension Vbar of V satisfies the delta approximation and cover properties for classes and V is a class in Vbar, then every suitably closed embedding j:Vbar to Nbar in Vbar with critical point above delta restricts to an embedding j|V:V to N amenable to the ground model V. In such extensions, therefore, there are no new large cardinals above delta. This result extends work in math.LO/9808011.
The existence of End Elementary Extensions of models M of ZFC is related to the ordinal height of M, according to classical results due to Keisler, Morley and Silver. In this paper, we further investigate the connection between the height of M and the existence of End Elementary Extensions of M. In particular, we prove that the theory `ZFC + GCH + there exist measurable cardinals + all inaccessible non weakly compact cardinals are possible heights of models with no End Elementary Extensions' is consistent relative to the theory `ZFC + GCH + there exist measurable cardinals + the weakly compact…

We consider the cardinal sequences of compact scattered spaces in models where CH is false. We describe a number of models where the continuum is aleph_2 in which no such space can have aleph_2 countable levels.
For an uncountable regular cardinal κwe let \nabla_κ(A) be the statement that A \subset κand for all regular θ> κ, the set of all X \in [θ]^<κsuch that X \cap κ\in κand otp(X \cap OR) is a cardinal in L[A \cap X \cap κ] is stationary. We had shown earlier that \nabla_{ω_1}(A) can hold in a generic extension of L. We now prove that \nabla_{ω_2}(A) can hold in a semi-proper generic extension of L, whereas \nabla_{ω_3}(0) is equivalent with the existence of 0^#.
Many of the most common reverse Easton iterations found in the large cardinal context, such as the Laver preparation, admit a gap at some small delta in the sense that they factor as P*Q, where P has size less than delta and Q is forced to be delta-strategically closed. In this paper, generalizing the Levy-Solovay theorem, I show that after such forcing, every embedding j:V[G]-->M[j(G)] in the extension which satisfies a mild closure condition is the lift of an embedding j:V-->M in the ground model. In particular, every ultrapower embedding in the extension lifts an embedding from the ground m…
Assuming the existence of a strong cardinal $κ$ and a measurable cardinal above it, we force a generic extension in which $κ$ is a singular strong limit cardinal of any prescribed cofinality, and such that the tree property holds at $κ^{++}$.
We investigate the interaction between compactness principles and guessing principles in the Radin forcing extensions. In particular, we show that in any Radin forcing extension with respect to a measure sequence on $κ$, if $κ$ is weakly compact, then $\diamondsuit(κ)$ holds. This provides contrast with a well-known theorem of Woodin, who showed that in a certain Radin extension over a suitably prepared ground model relative to the existence of large cardinals, the diamond principle fails at a strongly inaccessible Mahlo cardinal. Refining the analysis of the Radin extensions, we consistently …
If kappa is any strongly unfoldable cardinal, then this is preserved in a forcing extension in which Diamond_kappa(REG) fails. This result continues the progression of the corresponding results for weakly compact cardinals, due to Woodin, and for indescribable cardinals, due to Hauser.
Given a Woodin cardinal $δ$, I show that if $F$ is any Easton function with $F"δ\subseteqδ$ and $\GCH$ holds, then there is a cofinality-preserving forcing extension in which $2^γ= F(γ)$ for each regular cardinal $γ<δ$, and in which $δ$ remains Woodin. I also present a new example in which forcing a certain behavior of the continuum function on the regular cardinals, while preserving a given large cardinal, requires large cardinal strength beyond that of the original large cardinal under consideration. Specifically, I prove that the existence of a $λ$-supercompact cardinal $κ$ such that $\GCH$…
By classical results of Hurewicz, Kechris and Saint-Raymond, an analytic subset of a Polish space $X$ is covered by a $K_σ$ subset of $X$ if and only if it does not contain a closed-in-$X$ subset homeomorphic to the Baire space ${}^ωω$. We consider the analogous statement (which we call Hurewicz dichotomy) for $Σ^1_1$ subsets of the generalized Baire space ${}^κκ$ for a given uncountable cardinal $κ$ with $κ=κ^{<κ}$, and show how to force it to be true in a cardinal and cofinality preserving extension of the ground model. Moreover, we show that if the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis (GCH) hol…
We give a complete characterization of the sets of cardinals that in a suitable forcing extension can be the Kurepa spectrum, that is, the set of cardinalities of branches of Kurepa trees. This answers a question of the first named author.
I prove several theorems concerning upward closure and amalgamation in the generic multiverse of a countable transitive model of set theory. Every such model $W$ has forcing extensions $W[c]$ and $W[d]$ by adding a Cohen real, which cannot be amalgamated in any further extension, but some nontrivial forcing notions have all their extensions amalgamable. An increasing chain $W[G_0]\subseteq W[G_1]\subseteq\cdots$ has an upper bound $W[H]$ if and only if the forcing had uniformly bounded essential size in $W$. Every chain $W\subseteq W[c_0]\subseteq W[c_1]\subseteq\cdots$ of extensions adding Co…
A proper elementary extension of a model is called small if it realizes no new types over any finite set in the base model. We answer a question of Marker, and show that it is possible to have an o-minimal structure with a maximal small extension. Our construction yields such a structure for any cardinality. We show that in some cases, notably when the base structure is countable, the maximal small extension has maximal possible cardinality.
Let $κ$,$λ$ be regular uncountable cardinals such that $λ> κ^+$ is not a successor of a singular cardinal of low cofinality. We construct a generic extension with $s(κ) = λ$ starting from a ground model in which $o(κ) = λ$ and prove that assuming $\neg 0^¶$, $s(κ) = λ$ implies that $o(κ) \geq λ$ in the core model.
In this paper we prove that if k is a cardinal in L[0^#], then there is an inner model M such that M |= (V_k,E) has no elementary end extension. In particular if 0^# exists then weak compactness is never downwards absolute. We complement the result with a lemma stating that any cardinal greater than aleph_1 of uncountable cofinality in L[0^#] is Mahlo in every strict inner model of L[0^#].
Under the assumption that $δ$ is a Woodin cardinal and $\GCH$ holds, I show that if $F$ is any class function from the regular cardinals to the cardinals such that (1) $κ<\cf(F(κ))$, (2) $κ<λ$ implies $F(κ)\leq F(λ)$, and (3) $δ$ is closed under $F$, then there is a cofinality-preserving forcing extension in which $2^γ= F(γ)$ for each regular cardinal $γ<δ$, and in which $δ$ remains Woodin. Unlike the analogous results for supercompact cardinals [Men76] and strong cardinals [FH08], there is no requirement that the function $F$ be locally definable.
We show that, assuming GCH, if $κ$ is a Ramsey or a strongly Ramsey cardinal and $F$ is a class function on the regular cardinals having a closure point at $κ$ and obeying the constraints of Easton's theorem, namely, $F(α)\leq F(β)$ for $α\leqβ$ and $α<\cf(F(α))$, then there is a cofinality preserving forcing extension in which $κ$ remains Ramsey or strongly Ramsey respectively and $2^δ=F(δ)$ for every regular cardinal $δ$.
Assuming the existence of a Mahlo cardinal, we produce a generic extension of Gödel's constructible universe $L$, in which the transfer principles $(\aleph_2, \aleph_0) \to (\aleph_3, \aleph_1)$ and $(\aleph_3, \aleph_1) \to (\aleph_2, \aleph_0)$ fail simultaneously. The result answers a question of Silver from 1971. We also extend our result to higher gaps.
Under the assumption that the continuum c is a regular cardinal, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a Boolean algebra B of size c defined by sharing the main structural properties that P(N)/fin has under CH and in the aleph2-Cohen model. We prove a similar result in the category of Banach spaces.

We prove the following consistency result for cardinal sequences of length $< \om_3$: if GCH holds and $\la \geq \om_2$ is a regular cardinal, then in some cardinal-preserving generic extension $2^{\om} = \la$ and for every ordinal $η< \om_3$ and every sequence $f = \langle \ka_{\al} : \al < η\rangle$ of infinite cardinals with $\ka_{\al}\leq \la$ for $\al < η$ and $\ka_{\al} = \om$ if $\mbox{cf}(\al) = \om_2$, we have that $f$ is the cardinal sequence of some LCS space. Also, we prove that for every specific uncountable cardinal $λ$ it is relatively consistent with ZFC that for every $\al,\be…
We study isomorphic universality of Banach spaces of a given density and a number of pairwise non-isomorphic models in the same class. We show that in the Cohen model the isomorphic universality number for Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$ is $\aleph_2$, and analogous results are true for other cardinals (Theorem 1.2(1)) and that adding just one Cohen real to any model destroys the old universality of Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$ (Theorem 1.5). Moreover, adding one Cohen real adds a weakly compactly generated Banach space of density $\aleph_1$ which does not embed into any Banach spac…
