In this paper we first formulate several ``combinatorial principles'' concerning kappa \times omega matrices of subsets of omega and prove that they are valid in the generic extension obtained by adding any number of Cohen reals to any ground model V, provided that the parameter kappa is an omega-inaccessible regular cardinal in V.
Then we present a large number of applications of these principles, mainly to topology. Some of these consequences had been established earlier in generic extensions obtained by adding omega_2 Cohen reals to ground models satisfying CH, mostly for the case kappa=omega_2.
It is shown that there exists a complete, atomless, sigma-centered Boolean algebra, which does not contain any regular countable subalgebra if and only if there exist a nowhere dense ultrafilter. Therefore the existence of such algebras is undecidable in ZFC.
We study pairs $(V, V_{1})$, $V \subseteq V_1$, of models of $ZFC$ such that adding $κ-$many Cohen reals over $V_{1}$ adds $λ-$many Cohen reals over $V$ for some $λ> κ$.
In this paper we produce models $V_1\subseteq V_2$ of set theory such that adding $κ$-many Cohen reals to $V_2$ adds $λ$-many Cohen reals to $V_1$, for some $λ>κ$. We deal mainly with the case when $V_1$ and $V_2$ have the same cardinals.
Let $κ$ be an infinite cardinal. Then, forcing with $\mathbb{R}(κ)$$\times$$\mathbb{R}(κ)$ adds a generic filter for $\mathbb{C}(κ);$ where $\mathbb{R}(κ)$ and $\mathbb{C}(κ)$ are the forcing notions for adding $κ$-many random reals and adding $κ$-many Cohen reals respectively.
The purpose of the paper is to produce models V_1 \subset V_2 such that adding kappa-many Cohen reals to V_2 adds lambda Cohen reals to V_1. Some of the results: 1. Suppose that V satisfies GCH, kappa = \cup kappa_n= \cup o(kappa_n). Then there is a cardinal preserving generic extension V_1 of V satisfying GCH and having the same reals as V does , so that adding kappa many Cohen reals over V_1 produces kappa^+ Cohen reals over V. 2. Suppose that V is a model of GCH. Then there is a cofinality preserving extension V_1 satisfying GCH so that adding a Cohen real to V_1 produces aleph_1 Cohen real…
We show that the set of the ground-model reals has strong measure zero (is strongly meager) after adding a single Cohen real (random real). As consequence we prove that the set of the ground-model reals has strong measure zero after adding a single Hechler real.
We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is an infinite Boolean algebra in the ground model $V$ and $\mathbb{P}$ is a notion of forcing adding any of the following reals: a Cohen real, an unsplit real, or a random real, then, in any $\mathbb{P}$-generic extension $V[G]$, $\mathcal{A}$ has neither the Nikodym property nor the Grothendieck property. A similar result is also proved for a dominating real and the Nikodym property.
We study certain Banach spaces that are added in the extension by one Cohen real. Specifically, we show that adding just one Cohen real to any model adds a Banach space of density $\aleph_1$ which does not embed into any such space in the ground model such a Banach space can be chosen to be UG This has consequences on the the isomorphic universality number for Banach spaces of density $\aleph_1$, which is hence equal to $\aleph_2$ in the standard Cohen model and the same is true for UG spaces. Analogous universality results for Banach spaces are true for other cardinals, by a different proof.

I prove several theorems concerning upward closure and amalgamation in the generic multiverse of a countable transitive model of set theory. Every such model $W$ has forcing extensions $W[c]$ and $W[d]$ by adding a Cohen real, which cannot be amalgamated in any further extension, but some nontrivial forcing notions have all their extensions amalgamable. An increasing chain $W[G_0]\subseteq W[G_1]\subseteq\cdots$ has an upper bound $W[H]$ if and only if the forcing had uniformly bounded essential size in $W$. Every chain $W\subseteq W[c_0]\subseteq W[c_1]\subseteq\cdots$ of extensions adding Co…
We discuss some properties of Cohen and random reals. We show that they belong to any definable partition regular family, and hence they satisfy most "largeness" properties studied in Ramsey theory. We determine their position in the Mahler's classification of the reals and using it, we get some information about Liouville numbers. We also show that they are wild in the sense of o-minimality, i.e., they define the set of integers.
The feeling that those two forcing notions-Cohen and Random-(equivalently the corresponding Boolean algebras Borel(R)/(meager sets), Borel(R)/(null sets)) are special, was probably old and widespread. A reasonable interpretation is to show them unique, or ``minimal'' or at least characteristic in a family of ``nice forcing'' like Borel. We shall interpret ``nice'' as Souslin as suggested by Judah Shelah [JdSh 292]. We divide the family of Souslin forcing to two, and expect that: among the first part, i.e. those adding some non-dominated real, Cohen is minimal (=is below every one), while among…
Cohen's first model is a model of Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory in which there is a Dedekind-finite set of real numbers, and it is perhaps the most famous model where the Axiom of Choice fails. We force over this model to add a function from this Dedekind-finite set to some infinite ordinal $κ$. In the case that we force the function to be injective, it turns out that the resulting model is the same as adding $κ$ Cohen reals to the ground model, and that we have just added an enumeration of the canonical Dedekind-finite set. In the case where the function is merely surjective it turns out that …
The following results are proved: (a) In a model obtained by adding aleph_2 Cohen reals, there is always a c.c.c. complete Boolean algebra without the weak Freese-Nation property. (b) Modulo the consistency strength of a supercompact cardinal, the existence of a c.c.c. complete Boolean algebras without the weak Freese-Nation property consistent with GCH. (c) Under some consequences of the negation of 0^#, the weak Freese-Nation property of (P(omega),subseteq) is equivalent to the weak Freese-Nation property of any of C(kappa) or R(kappa) for uncountable kappa. (d) Modulo consistency of (aleph_…
We discuss the effect of adding a single real (for various forcing notions adding reals) on cardinal invariants associated with the continuum (like the unbounding or the dominating number or the cardinals related to measure and category on the real line). For random and Cohen forcing, this question was investigated by Cicho'n and Pawlikowski; for Hechler forcing, by Judah, Shelah and myself. We show here: (1) adding an eventually different or a localization real adjoins a Luzin set of size continuum and a mad family of size omega_1; (2) Laver and Mathias forcing collapse the dominating number …
We prove that any suitable generalization of Laver forcing to the space $ κ^κ$, for uncountable regular $κ$, necessarily adds a Cohen $κ$-real. We also study a dichotomy and an ideal naturally related to generalized Laver forcing. Using this dichotomy, we prove the following stronger result: if $ κ^{<κ}=κ$, then every $<κ$-distributive tree forcing on $κ^κ$ adding a dominating $κ$-real which is the image of the generic under a continuous function in the ground model, adds a Cohen $κ$-real. This is a contribution to the study of generalized Baire spaces and answers a question from arXiv:1611.08…
We introduce a variant of Martin's axiom, called the grounded Martin's axiom, which asserts that the universe is a ccc forcing extension in which Martin's axiom holds for posets in the ground model. This principle already implies several of the combinatorial consequences of Martin's axiom. The new axiom is shown to be consistent with the failure of Martin's axiom and a singular continuum. We prove that the grounded Martin's axiom is preserved in a strong way when adding a Cohen real and that adding a random real to a model of Martin's axiom preserves the grounded version (even though it destro…
In this work we use a notion of rank first introduced by James Baumgartner and Peter Dordal and later developed independently by the third author to show that adding a Hechler real has strong combinatorial consequences. We prove: 1) assuming omega_1^V = omega_1^L, there is no real in V[d] which is eventually different from the reals in L[d], where d is Hechler over V; 2) adding one Hechler real makes the invariants on the left-hand side of Cicho'n's diagram equal omega_1 and those on the right-hand side equal 2^omega and produces a maximal almost disjoint family of subsets of omega of size ome…
Assume that $M$ is a c.t.m. of $ZFC+CH$ containing a simplified $(ω_1,2)$-morass, $P\in M$ is the poset adding $\aleph_3$ generic reals and $G$ is $P$-generic over $M$. In $M$ we construct a function between sets of terms in the forcing language, that interpreted in $M[G]$ is an $\mathbb R$-linear order-preserving monomorphism from the finite elements of an ultrapower of the reals, over a non-principal ultrafilter on $ω$, into the Esterle algebra of formal power series. Therefore it is consistent that $2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_3$ and, for any infinite compact Hausdorff space $X$, there exists a dis…
