In this paper we prove that if k is a cardinal in L[0^#], then there is an inner model M such that M |= (V_k,E) has no elementary end extension. In particular if 0^# exists then weak compactness is never downwards absolute. We complement the result with a lemma stating that any cardinal greater than aleph_1 of uncountable cofinality in L[0^#] is Mahlo in every strict inner model of L[0^#].
We investigate categoricity of abstract elementary classes without any remnants of compactness (like non-definability of well ordering, existence of E.M. models or existence of large cardinals). We prove (assuming a weak version of GCH around lambda) that if K is categorical in lambda, lambda^+, LS(K) <= lambda and 1 <= I(lambda^{++},K)< 2^{lambda^{++}} then K has a model in lambda^{+++} .
One of the numerous characterizations of a Ramsey cardinal kappa involves the existence of certain types of elementary embeddings for transitive sets of size κsatisfying a large fragment of ZFC. We introduce new large cardinal axioms generalizing the Ramsey elementary embeddings characterization and show that they form a natural hierarchy between weakly compact cardinals and measurable cardinals. These new axioms serve to further our knowledge about the elementary embedding properties of smaller large cardinals, in particular those still consistent with V=L.
Large cardinals arising from the existence of arbitrarily long end elementary extension chains over models of set theory are studied here. In particular, we show that the large cardinals obtained that way (`Unfoldable cardinals') behave as a `boundary' between properties consistent with `V=L' and existence of indiscernibles. We also provide an `embedding characterisation' of the unfoldable cardinals and study their preservation and destruction by various different forcings.
Let K be an abstract elementary classes which has arbitrarily large models and satisfies the amalgamation and joint embedding properties. Theorem 1. Suppose K is χ-tame. If K is categorical in some λ^+ >LS(K) then it is categorical in all μ\geq (λ+χ)^+. Theorem 2. If K is LS(K)-tame and is categorical both in LS(K) and in LS(K)^+ then K is categorical in all μ\geq LS(K).
The existence of End Elementary Extensions of models M of ZFC is related to the ordinal height of M, according to classical results due to Keisler, Morley and Silver. In this paper, we further investigate the connection between the height of M and the existence of End Elementary Extensions of M. In particular, we prove that the theory `ZFC + GCH + there exist measurable cardinals + all inaccessible non weakly compact cardinals are possible heights of models with no End Elementary Extensions' is consistent relative to the theory `ZFC + GCH + there exist measurable cardinals + the weakly compact…
The following pcf results are proved: 1. Assume that kappa > aleph_0 is a weakly compact cardinal. Let mu > 2^kappa be a singular cardinal of cofinality kappa. Then for every regular lambda < pp^+_{Gamma(kappa)} (mu) there is an increasing sequence (lambda_i | i < kappa) of regular cardinals converging to mu such that lambda = tcf(prod_{i < kappa} lambda_i, <_{J^{bd}_kappa}). 2. Let mu be a strong limit cardinal and theta a cardinal above mu. Suppose that at least one of them has an uncountable cofinality. Then there is sigma_* < mu such that for every chi < theta the following holds: theta > …
We show that various tameness assertions about abstract elementary classes imply the existence of large cardinals under mild cardinal arithmetic assumptions.
We study PC-exact saturation for stable and simple theories. Among other results, we show that PC-exact saturation characterizes the stability cardinals of size at least continuum of a countable stable theory and, additionally, that simple unstable theories have PC-exact saturation at singular cardinals, satisfying mild set-theoretic hypotheses, which had previously been open even for the random graph. We characterize supersimplicity of countable theories in terms of having PC-exact saturation at singular cardinals of countable cofinality. We also consider the local analogue of PC-exact satura…
Let K be an Abstract Elemenetary Class satisfying the amalgamation and the joint embedding property, let μbe the Hanf number of K. Suppose K is tame. MAIN COROLLARY: (ZFC) If K is categorical in a successor cardinal bigger than \beth_{(2^μ)^+} then K is categorical in all cardinals greater than \beth_{(2^μ)^+}. This is an improvment of a Theorem of Makkai and Shelah ([Sh285] who used a strongly compact cardinal for the same conclusion) and Shelah's downward categoricity theorem for AECs with amalgamation (from [Sh394]).
We introduce the notion of a critical cardinal as the critical point of sufficiently strong elementary embedding between transitive sets. Assuming the axiom of choice this is equivalent to measurability, but it is well-known that choice is necessary for the equivalence. Oddly enough, this central notion was never investigated on its own before. We prove a technical criterion for lifting elementary embeddings to symmetric extensions, and we use this to show that it is consistent relative to a supercompact cardinal that there is a critical cardinal whose successor is singular.
This paper explores several topics related to Woodin's HOD conjecture. We improve the large cardinal hypothesis of Woodin's HOD dichotomy theorem from an extendible cardinal to a strongly compact cardinal. We show that assuming there is a strongly compact cardinal and the HOD hypothesis holds, there is no elementary embedding from HOD to HOD, settling a question of Woodin. We show that the HOD hypothesis is equivalent to a uniqueness property of elementary embeddings of levels of the cumulative hierarchy. We prove that the HOD hypothesis holds if and only if every regular cardinal above the fi…
We initiate a systematic investigation of the abstract elementary classes that have amalgamation, satisfy tameness (a locality property for orbital types), and are stable (in terms of the number of orbital types) in some cardinal. Assuming the singular cardinal hypothesis (SCH), we prove a full characterization of the (high-enough) stability cardinals, and connect the stability spectrum with the behavior of saturated models. We deduce (in ZFC) that if a class is stable on a tail of cardinals, then it has no long splitting chains (the converse is known). This indicates that there is a clear not…
We study general methods to build forking-like notions in the framework of tame abstract elementary classes (AECs) with amalgamation. We show that whenever such classes are categorical in a high-enough cardinal, they admit a good frame: a forking-like notion for types of singleton elements. $\mathbf{Theorem}$ (Superstability from categoricity) Let $K$ be a $(<κ)$-tame AEC with amalgamation. If $κ= \beth_κ> \text{LS} (K)$ and $K$ is categorical in a $λ> κ$, then: * $K$ is stable in all cardinals $\ge κ$. * $K$ is categorical in $κ$. * There is a type-full good $λ$-frame with underlying class $K…
For each natural number $n$, let $C^{(n)}$ be the closed and unbounded proper class of ordinals $α$ such that $V_α$ is a $Σ_n$ elementary substructure of $V$. We say that $κ$ is a \emph{$C^{(n)}$-cardinal} if it is the critical point of an elementary embedding $j:V\to M$, $M$ transitive, with $j(κ)$ in $C^{(n)}$. By analyzing the notion of $C^{(n)}$-cardinal at various levels of the usual hierarchy of large cardinal principles we show that, starting at the level of superstrong cardinals and up to the level of rank-into-rank embeddings, $C^{(n)}$-cardinals form a much finer hierarchy. The natur…
We consider the following dichotomy for $Σ^0_2$ finitary relations $R$ on analytic subsets of the generalized Baire space for $κ$: either all $R$-independent sets are of size at most $κ$, or there is a $κ$-perfect $R$-independent set. This dichotomy is the uncountable version of a result found in (W. Kubiś, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 131 (2003), no 2.:619--623) and in (S. Shelah, Fund. Math. 159 (1999), no. 1:1--50). We prove that the above statement holds assuming $\Diamond_κ$ and the set theoretical hypothesis $I^-(κ)$, which is the modification of the hypothesis $I(κ)$ suitable for limit cardin…
A cardinal is weakly Reinhardt if it is the critical point of an elementary embedding from the universe of sets into a model that contains the double powerset of every ordinal. This note establishes the equiconsistency of a proper class of weakly Reinhardt cardinals with a proper class of Reinhardt cardinals in the context of second-order set theory without the Axiom of Choice.
Tame abstract elementary classes are a broad nonelementary framework for model theory that encompasses several examples of interest. In recent years, progress toward developing a classification theory for them have been made. Abstract independence relations such as Shelah's good frames have been found to be key objects. Several new categoricity transfers have been obtained. We survey these developments using the following result (due to the second author) as our guiding thread: $\mathbf{Theorem}$ If a universal class is categorical in cardinals of arbitrarily high cofinality, then it is catego…
The categoricity spectrum of a class of structures is the collection of cardinals in which the class has a single model up to isomorphism. Assuming that cardinal exponentiation is injective (a weakening of the generalized continuum hypothesis, GCH), we give a complete list of the possible categoricity spectrums of an abstract elementary class with amalgamation and arbitrarily large models. Specifically, the categoricity spectrum is either empty, an end segment starting below the Hanf number, or a closed interval consisting of finite successors of the Löwenheim-Skolem-Tarski number (there are e…
This paper contributes to the theory of large cardinals beyond the Kunen inconsistency, or choiceless large cardinal axioms, in the context where the Axiom of Choice is not assumed. The first part of the paper investigates a periodicity phenomenon: assuming choiceless large cardinal axioms, the properties of the cumulative hierarchy turn out to alternate between even and odd ranks. The second part of the paper explores the structure of ultrafilters under choiceless large cardinal axioms, exploiting the fact that these axioms imply a weak form of the author's Ultrapower Axiom. The third and fin…
Assume ZF($j$) and there is a Reinhardt cardinal, as witnessed by the elementary embedding $j:V\to V$. We investigate the linear iterates $(N_α,j_α)$ of $(V,j)$, and their relationship to $(V,j)$, forcing and definability, including that for each infinite ordinal $α$, every set is set-generic over $N_α$, but $N_α$ is not a set-ground. Assume second order ZF. We prove that the existence of super Reinhardt cardinals and total Reinhardt cardinals is not affected by small forcing. And if $V[G]$ has a set of ordinals which is not in $V$, then $V[G]$ has no elementary embedding $j:V[G]\to M\subseteq…
The Necessary Maximality Principle for c.c.c. forcing asserts that any statement about a real in a c.c.c. extension that could become true in a further c.c.c. extension and remain true in all subsequent c.c.c. extensions, is already true in the minimal extension containing the real. We show that this principle is equiconsistent with the existence of a weakly compact cardinal.
In this paper, we continue the study of a left-distributive algebra of elementary embeddings from the collection of sets of rank less than lambda to itself, as well as related finite left-distributive algebras (which can be defined without reference to large cardinals). In particular, we look at the critical points (least ordinals moved) of the elementary embeddings; simple statements about these ordinals can be reformulated as purely algebraic statements concerning the left distributive law. Previously, lower bounds on the number of critical points have been used to show that certain such alg…
We give a sharper version of a theorem of Rosicky, Trnkova and Adamek, and a new proof of a theorem of Rosicky, both about colimit preservation between categories of structures. Unlike the original proofs, which use category-theoretic methods, we use set-theoretic arguments involving elementary embeddings given by large cardinals such as alpha-strongly compact and C^(n)-extendible cardinals.
If an extension Vbar of V satisfies the delta approximation and cover properties for classes and V is a class in Vbar, then every suitably closed embedding j:Vbar to Nbar in Vbar with critical point above delta restricts to an embedding j|V:V to N amenable to the ground model V. In such extensions, therefore, there are no new large cardinals above delta. This result extends work in math.LO/9808011.
Suppose $κ$ is $λ$-supercompact witnessed by an elementary embedding $j:V\rightarrow M$ with critical point $κ$, and further suppose that $F$ is a function from the class of regular cardinals to the class of cardinals satisfying the requirements of Easton's theorem: (1) $\forallα$ $α<\textrm{cf}(F(α))$ and (2) $α<β$ $\Longrightarrow$ $F(α)\leq F(β)$. In this article we address the question: assuming GCH, what additional assumptions are necessary on $j$ and $F$ if one wants to be able to force the continuum function to agree with $F$ globally, while preserving the $λ$-supercompactness of $κ$? W…
In this note, we use elementary submodels to prove that a separable monotonically normal compactum can be mapped on a separable metric space via a continuous function whose fibers have cardinality at most 2.
We show that for any uncountable cardinal $λ$, the category of sets of cardinality at least $λ$ and monomorphisms between them cannot appear as the category of point of a topos, in particular is not the category of models of a $L_{(\infty,ω)}$-theory. More generally we show that for any regular cardinal $κ< λ$ it is neither the category of $κ$-points of a $κ$-topos, in particular, not the category of models of a $L_{(\infty,κ)}$-theory. The proof relies on the construction of a categorified version of the Scott topology, which constitute a left adjoint to the functor sending any topos to its c…
A countable structure is said to be extendible if it has the same Scott sentence as some uncountable structure. Rigid structures are not extendible. We give an example of an extendible model with a rigid elementary extension.
We show that many large cardinal notions can be characterized in terms of the existence of certain elementary embeddings between transitive set-sized structures, that map their critical point to the large cardinal in question. In particular, we provide such embedding characterizations also for several large cardinal notions for which no embedding characterizations have been known so far, namely for subtle, for ineffable, and for $λ$-ineffable cardinals. As an application, which we will study in detail in a subsequent paper, we present the basic idea of our concept of internal large cardinals. …
For an uncountable regular cardinal κwe let \nabla_κ(A) be the statement that A \subset κand for all regular θ> κ, the set of all X \in [θ]^<κsuch that X \cap κ\in κand otp(X \cap OR) is a cardinal in L[A \cap X \cap κ] is stationary. We had shown earlier that \nabla_{ω_1}(A) can hold in a generic extension of L. We now prove that \nabla_{ω_2}(A) can hold in a semi-proper generic extension of L, whereas \nabla_{ω_3}(0) is equivalent with the existence of 0^#.
Many of the most common reverse Easton iterations found in the large cardinal context, such as the Laver preparation, admit a gap at some small delta in the sense that they factor as P*Q, where P has size less than delta and Q is forced to be delta-strategically closed. In this paper, generalizing the Levy-Solovay theorem, I show that after such forcing, every embedding j:V[G]-->M[j(G)] in the extension which satisfies a mild closure condition is the lift of an embedding j:V-->M in the ground model. In particular, every ultrapower embedding in the extension lifts an embedding from the ground m…
Assuming the existence of a strong cardinal $κ$ and a measurable cardinal above it, we force a generic extension in which $κ$ is a singular strong limit cardinal of any prescribed cofinality, and such that the tree property holds at $κ^{++}$.
We investigate the interaction between compactness principles and guessing principles in the Radin forcing extensions. In particular, we show that in any Radin forcing extension with respect to a measure sequence on $κ$, if $κ$ is weakly compact, then $\diamondsuit(κ)$ holds. This provides contrast with a well-known theorem of Woodin, who showed that in a certain Radin extension over a suitably prepared ground model relative to the existence of large cardinals, the diamond principle fails at a strongly inaccessible Mahlo cardinal. Refining the analysis of the Radin extensions, we consistently …
In this paper we prove: Theorem 1. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be an abstract elementary class which satisfies the joint embedding and amalgamation properties. Suppose $λ>μ\geq LS(\mathcal{K})$ and $θ$ is a limit ordinal $<λ^+$. If $\mathcal{K}$ is $μ$ superstable and $μ^+$-superstable and satisfies $μ^+$-symmetry, then for any increasing sequence $\langle M_i\mid i<θ\rangle$ of $μ^+$-saturated models of cardinality $λ$, the model $\bigcup_{i<θ}M_i$ is $μ^+$-saturated.
We show that if we add any number of Cohen reals to the ground model then, in the generic extension, a locally compact scattered space has at most (2^{aleph_0})^V many levels of size omega. We also give a complete ZFC characterization of the cardinal sequences of regular scattered spaces. Although the classes of the regular and of the 0-dimensional scattered spaces are different, we prove that they have the same cardinal sequences.
Keisler proved that if $θ$ is a strong limit cardinal and $λ$ is a singular cardinal, then the transfer relation $θ\longrightarrowλ$ holds. In a previous paper, we studied initial elementary submodels of the $λ$-like models produced in the proof of Keisler's transfer theorem when $θ$ is further assumed to be regular i.e., $θ$ is strongly inaccessible. In this paper we deal with a much more difficult situation. Some years ago Ali Enayat asked the author whether Keisler's singular-like models can have elementary end extensions. We give a positive answer to this question.
We give a complete characterization of the sets of cardinals that in a suitable forcing extension can be the Kurepa spectrum, that is, the set of cardinalities of branches of Kurepa trees. This answers a question of the first named author.
A result of Kaufmann shows that if $L_α$ is countable, admissible and satisfies $Π_n\textsf{-Collection}$, then $\langle L_α, \in \rangle$ has a proper $Σ_{n+1}$-elementary end extension. This paper investigates to what extent the theory that holds in $\langle L_α, \in \rangle$ can be transferred to the partially-elementary end extensions guaranteed by Kaufmann's result. We show that there are $L_α$ satisfying full separation, powerset and $Π_n\textsf{-Collection}$ that have no proper $Σ_{n+1}$-elementary end extension satisfying either $Π_{n}\textsf{-Collection}$ or $Π_{n+3}\textsf{-Foundatio…
We show that there exist models $\mathcal M_1$ and $\mathcal M_2$ such that $\mathcal M_1$ elementarily embeds into $\mathcal M_2$ but their ultrafilter extensions $β(\mathcal M_1)$ and $β(\mathcal M_2)$ are not elementarily equivalent.
Suppose that ${\mathcal M}$ is a model of PA and ${\mathcal N}$ is a countably generated elementary end extension of ${\mathcal M}$. Let ${\mathfrak X}$ be the set of subsets of M that are coded by ${\mathcal N}$. Then ${\mathcal M}$ has a minimal elementary end extension that codes exactly the same subsets of M that ${\mathcal N}$ does iff every set that is $Π_1^0$-definable in $({\mathcal M},{\mathfrak X})$ is the union of countably many sets that are $Σ_1^0$-definable.
We extend and improve the result of Makkai and Paré that the powerful image of any accessible functor F is accessible, assuming there exists a sufficiently large strongly compact cardinal. We reduce the required large cardinal assumption to the existence of $L_{μ,ω}$-compact cardinals for sufficiently large μ, and also show that under this assumption the λ-pure powerful image of F is accessible. From the first of these statements, we obtain that the tameness of every Abstract Elementary Class follows from a weaker large cardinal assumption than was previously known. We provide two ways of empl…
Under the assumption that $δ$ is a Woodin cardinal and $\GCH$ holds, I show that if $F$ is any class function from the regular cardinals to the cardinals such that (1) $κ<\cf(F(κ))$, (2) $κ<λ$ implies $F(κ)\leq F(λ)$, and (3) $δ$ is closed under $F$, then there is a cofinality-preserving forcing extension in which $2^γ= F(γ)$ for each regular cardinal $γ<δ$, and in which $δ$ remains Woodin. Unlike the analogous results for supercompact cardinals [Men76] and strong cardinals [FH08], there is no requirement that the function $F$ be locally definable.
We study uniqueness of limit models in abstract elementary classes (AECs) with no maximal models. We prove (assuming instances of diamonds) that categoricity in a cardinal of the form $μ^{+(n + 1)}$ implies the uniqueness of limit models of cardinality $μ^{+}, μ^{++}, \ldots, μ^{+n}$. This sheds light on a paper of Shelah and Villaveces, who were the first to consider uniqueness of limit models in this context. We also prove that (again assuming instances of diamonds) in an AEC with no maximal models, tameness (a locality property for types) together with categoricity in a proper class of card…
We present two different types of models where, for certain singular cardinals lambda of uncountable cofinality, lambda -> (lambda, omega+1)^2, although lambda is not a strong limit cardinal. We announce, here, and will present in a subsequent paper, that, for example, consistently, aleph_{omega_1} not-> (aleph_{omega_1}, omega+1)^2 and consistently, 2^{aleph_0} not-> (2^{aleph_0},omega +1)^2 .
Assuming the existence of a Mahlo cardinal, we produce a generic extension of Gödel's constructible universe $L$, in which the transfer principles $(\aleph_2, \aleph_0) \to (\aleph_3, \aleph_1)$ and $(\aleph_3, \aleph_1) \to (\aleph_2, \aleph_0)$ fail simultaneously. The result answers a question of Silver from 1971. We also extend our result to higher gaps.
