One of the numerous characterizations of a Ramsey cardinal kappa involves the existence of certain types of elementary embeddings for transitive sets of size κsatisfying a large fragment of ZFC. We introduce new large cardinal axioms generalizing the Ramsey elementary embeddings characterization and show that they form a natural hierarchy between weakly compact cardinals and measurable cardinals. These new axioms serve to further our knowledge about the elementary embedding properties of smaller large cardinals, in particular those still consistent with V=L.
We show that, assuming GCH, if $κ$ is a Ramsey or a strongly Ramsey cardinal and $F$ is a class function on the regular cardinals having a closure point at $κ$ and obeying the constraints of Easton's theorem, namely, $F(α)\leq F(β)$ for $α\leqβ$ and $α<\cf(F(α))$, then there is a cofinality preserving forcing extension in which $κ$ remains Ramsey or strongly Ramsey respectively and $2^δ=F(δ)$ for every regular cardinal $δ$.
We generalise the $α$-Ramsey cardinals introduced in Holy and Schlicht (2018) for cardinals $α$ to arbitrary ordinals $α$, and answer several questions posed in that paper. In particular, we show that $α$-Ramseys are downwards absolute to the core model $K$ for all $α$ of uncountable cofinality, that strategic $ω$-Ramsey cardinals are equiconsistent with remarkable cardinals and that strategic $α$-Ramsey cardinals are equiconsistent with measurable cardinals for all $α>ω$. We also show that the $n$-Ramseys satisfy indescribability properties and use them to provide a game-theoretic characteris…
Smallish large cardinals $κ$ are often characterized by the existence of a collection of filters on $κ$, each of which is an ultrafilter on the subsets of $κ$ of some transitive $\mathrm{ZFC}^-$-model of size $ κ$. We introduce a Mitchell-like order for Ramsey and Ramsey-like cardinals, ordering such collections of small filters. We show that the Mitchell-like order and the resulting notion of rank have all the desirable properties of the Mitchell order on normal measures on a measurable cardinal. The Mitchell-like order behaves robustly with respect to forcing constructions. We show that exte…
We introduce a hierarchy of large cardinals between weakly compact and measurable cardinals, that is closely related to the Ramsey-like cardinals introduced by Victoria Gitman, and is based on certain infinite filter games, however also has a range of equivalent characterizations in terms of elementary embeddings. The aim of this paper is to locate the Ramsey-like cardinals studied by Gitman, and other well-known large cardinal notions, in this hierarchy.
This paper continues the study of the Ramsey-like large cardinals. Ramsey-like cardinals are defined by generalizing the characterization of Ramsey cardinals via the existence of elementary embeddings. Ultrafilters derived from such embeddings are fully iterable and so it is natural to ask about large cardinal notions asserting the existence of ultrafilters allowing only $α$-many iterations for some countable ordinal $α$. Here we study such $α$-iterable cardinals. We show that the $α$-iterable cardinals form a strict hierarchy for $α\leqω_1$, that they are downward absolute to $L$ for $α<ω_1^L…
In this series of papers, we advance Ramsey theory of colorings over partitions. In this part, a correspondence between anti-Ramsey properties of partitions and chain conditions of the natural forcing notions that homogenize colorings over them is uncovered. At the level of the first uncountable cardinal this gives rise to a duality theorem under Martin's Axiom: a function $p:[ω_1]^2\rightarrowω$ witnesses a weak negative Ramsey relation when $p$ plays the role of a coloring if and only if a positive Ramsey relation holds over $p$ when $p$ plays the role of a partition. The consistency of posi…
A subset $S$ of a cardinal $κ$ is Ramsey if for every function $f:[S]^{<ω}\to κ$ with $f(a)<\min a$ for all $a\in[S]^{<ω}$, there is a set $H\subseteq S$ of cardinality $κ$ which is \emph{homogeneous} for $f$, meaning that $f\upharpoonright[H]^n$ is constant for each $n<ω$. Baumgartner proved \cite{MR0384553} that if $κ$ is a Ramsey cardinal, then the collection of non-Ramsey subsets of $κ$ is a normal ideal on $κ$. Sharpe and Welch \cite{MR2817562}, and independently Bagaria \cite{MR3894041}, extended the notion of $Π^1_n$-indescribability where $n<ω$ to that of $Π^1_ξ$-indescribability where…
We show in this note that in the forcing extension by $Add(ω,\beth_ω)$, the following Ramsey property holds: for any $r\in ω$ and any $f: \mathbb{R}\to r$, there exists an infinite $X\subset \mathbb{R}$ such that $X+X$ is monochromatic under $f$. We also show the Ramsey statement above is true in $\mathrm{ZFC}$ when $r=2$. This answers two questions by Komjáth, Leader, Russell, Shelah, Soukup and Vidnyánszky.
We discuss the rainbow Ramsey theorems at limit cardinals and successors of singular cardinals, addressing some questions in \cite{MR2354904} and \cite{MR2902230}. In particular, we show for inaccessible $κ$, $κ\to^{poly}(κ)^2_{2-bdd}$ does not characterize weak compactness and for singular $κ$, $\mathrm{GCH}+\square_κ$ implies $κ^+\not\to^{poly} (η)^2_{<κ-bdd}$ for any $η\geq cf(κ)^+$ and $κ^+\to^{poly} (ν)^2_{<κ-bdd}$ for any $ν<cf(κ)^+$. We also provide a simplified construction of a model for $ω_2\not\to^{poly} (ω_1)^2_{2-bdd}$ originally constructed in \cite{MR2902230} and show the witnes…
In this series of papers we advance Ramsey theory of colorings over partitions. In this part, we concentrate on anti-Ramsey relations, or, as they are better known, strong colorings, and in particular solve two problems from [CKS21]. It is shown that for every infinite cardinal $λ$, a strong coloring on $λ^+$ by $λ$ colors over a partition can be stretched to one with $λ^{+}$ colors over the same partition. Also, a sufficient condition is given for when a strong coloring witnessing $Pr_1(\ldots)$ over a partition may be improved to witness $Pr_0(\ldots)$. Since the classical theory corresponds…
We study the structured rainbow Ramsey theory at uncountable cardinals. When compared to the usual rainbow Ramsey theory, the variation focuses on finding a rainbow subset that not only is of a certain cardinality but also satisfies certain structural constraints, such as being stationary or closed in its supremum. In the process of dealing with cardinals greater than $ω_1$, we uncover some connections between versions of Chang's Conjectures and instances of rainbow Ramsey partition relations, addressing a question raised in \cite{zhang}.
We pursue the idea of generalizing Hindman's Theorem to uncountable cardinalities, by analogy with the way in which Ramsey's Theorem can be generalized to weakly compact cardinals. But unlike Ramsey's Theorem, the outcome of this paper is that the natural generalizations of Hindman's Theorem proposed here tend to fail at all uncountable cardinals.
Building on work of Holy, Lücke and Njegomir \cite{MR3913154} on small embedding characterizations of large cardinals, we use some classical results of Baumgartner (see \cite{MR0384553} and \cite{MR0540770}), to give characterizations of several well-known large cardinal ideals, including the Ramsey ideal, in terms of generic elementary embeddings; we also point out some seemingly inherent differences between small embedding and generic embedding characterizations of subtle cardinals. Additionally, we present a simple and uniform proof which shows that, when $κ$ is weakly compact, many large c…
In the context of large cardinals, the classical diamond principle Diamond_kappa is easily strengthened in natural ways. When kappa is a measurable cardinal, for example, one might ask that a Diamond_kappa sequence anticipate every subset of kappa not merely on a stationary set, but on a set of normal measure one. This is equivalent to the existence of a function l:kappa-->V_kappa such that for any A in H(kappa+) there is an embedding j:V-->M having critical point kappa with j(l)(kappa)=A. This and similar principles formulated for many other large cardinal notions, including weakly compact, i…
We will consider a number of new large-cardinal properties, the $α$-tremendous cardinals for each limit ordinal $α>0$, the hyper-tremendous cardinals, the $α$-enormous cardinals for each limit ordinal $α>0$, and the hyper-enormous cardinals. For limit ordinals $α>0$, the $α$-tremendous cardinals and hyper-tremendous cardinals have consistency strength between I3 and I2. An $ω$-enormous cardinal has consistency strength greater than I0, and also all the large-cardinal axioms discussed in the second part of Hugh Woodin's paper on suitable extender models, not known to be inconsistent with ZFC an…
We classify a sharp phase transition threshold for Friedman's finite adjacent Ramsey theorem. We extend the method for showing this result to two previously known classifications involving Ramsey theorem variants: the Paris--Harrington theorem and the Kanamori--McAloon theorem. We also provide tools to remove ad-hoc arguments from the proofs of phase transition results as much as currently possible.
Ramsey's theorem asserts that every $k$-coloring of $[ω]^n$ admits an infinite monochromatic set. Whenever $n \geq 3$, there exists a computable $k$-coloring of $[ω]^n$ whose solutions compute the halting set. On the other hand, for every computable $k$-coloring of $[ω]^2$ and every non-computable set $C$, there is an infinite monochromatic set $H$ such that $C \not \leq_T H$. The latter property is known as cone avoidance. In this article, we design a natural class of Ramsey-like theorems encompassing many statements studied in reverse mathematics. We prove that this class admits a maximal st…
We show that Shelah cardinals are preserved under the canonical $GCH$ forcing notion. We also show that if $GCH$ holds and $F:REG\rightarrow CARD$ is an Easton function which satisfies some weak properties, then there exists a cofinality preserving generic extension of the universe which preserves Shelah cardinals and satisfies $\forall κ\in REG,~ 2^κ=F(κ)$. This gives a partial answer to a question asked by Cody [1] and independently by Honzik [5]. We also prove an indestructibility result for Shelah cardinals.
We prove that for regular $λ$ above a strong limit singular $μ$ certain guessing principles follow just from cardinal arithmetic assumptions. The main result is that for such $λ$ and $μ$ there are coboundedly many regular $κ<μ$ such that $\clubsuit^-(S^λ_κ)$ holds whenever $λ=λ^{<κ}$.
By Easton's theorem one can force the exponential function on regular cardinals to take rather arbitrary cardinal values provided monotonicity and Koenig's lemma are respected. In models without choice we employ a "surjective" version of the exponential function. We then prove a choiceless Easton's theorem: one can force the surjective exponential function on all infinite cardinals to take arbitrary cardinal values, provided monotonicity and Cantor's theorem are satisfied, irrespective of cofinalities.
We provide a model theoretical and tree property like characterization of $λ$-$Π^1_1$-subcompactness and supercompactness. We explore the behaviour of those combinatorial principles at accessible cardinals.
The Gap Forcing Theorem, a key contribution of this paper, implies essentially that after any reverse Easton iteration of closed forcing, such as the Laver preparation, every supercompactness measure on a supercompact cardinal extends a measure from the ground model. Thus, such forcing can create no new supercompact cardinals, and, if the GCH holds, neither can it increase the degree of supercompactness of any cardinal; in particular, it can create no new measurable cardinals. In a crescendo of what I call exact preservation theorems, I use this new technology to perform a kind of partial Lave…
This paper presents the main results in my Ph.D. thesis. In what follows several proofs of SCH are presented introducing a family of covering properties which implies both SCH and the failure of various forms of square. These covering properties are also applied to investigate models of strongly compact cardinals or of strong forcing axioms like MM or PFA.
We give some general criteria, when kappa-complete forcing preserves largeness properties -- like kappa-presaturation of normal ideals on lambda (even when they concentrate on small cofinalities). Then we quite accurately obtain the consistency strength ``NS_lambda is aleph_1-preserving'', for lambda > aleph_2 .
We show that in Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory without the Axiom of Choice a surjectively modified continuum function $θ(κ)$ can take almost arbitrary values for all infinite cardinals. This choiceless version of Easton's Theorem is in sharp contrast to the situation in ZFC, where for singular cardinals $κ$, the value of $2^κ$ is strongly influenced by the behaviour of the continuum function below. Our construction can roughly be described as follows: In a ground model $V \models ZFC + GCH$ with a "reasonable" function $F: Card \rightarrow Card$ on the infinite cardinals, a class forcing ${\mathb…
We investigate categoricity of abstract elementary classes without any remnants of compactness (like non-definability of well ordering, existence of E.M. models or existence of large cardinals). We prove (assuming a weak version of GCH around lambda) that if K is categorical in lambda, lambda^+, LS(K) <= lambda and 1 <= I(lambda^{++},K)< 2^{lambda^{++}} then K has a model in lambda^{+++} .
The lottery preparation, a new general kind of Laver preparation, works uniformly with supercompact cardinals, strongly compact cardinals, strong cardinals, measurable cardinals, or what have you. And like the Laver preparation, the lottery preparation makes these cardinals indestructible by various kinds of further forcing. A supercompact cardinal kappa, for example, becomes fully indestructible by kappa-directed closed forcing; a strong cardinal kappa becomes indestructible by less-than-or-equal-kappa-strategically closed forcing; and a strongly compact cardinal kappa becomes indestructible …
Kunen's proof of the non-existence of Reinhardt cardinals opened up the research on very large cardinals, i.e., hypotheses at the limit of inconsistency. One of these large cardinals, I0, proved to have descriptive-set-theoretical characteristics, similar to those implied by the Axiom of Determinacy: if $λ$ witnesses I0, then there is a topology for $V_{λ+1}$ that is completely metrizable and with weight $λ$ (i.e., it is a $λ$-Polish space), and it turns out that all the subsets of $V_{λ+1}$ in $L(V_{λ+1})$ have the $λ$-Perfect Set Property in such topology. In this paper, we find another gene…
We study general methods to build forking-like notions in the framework of tame abstract elementary classes (AECs) with amalgamation. We show that whenever such classes are categorical in a high-enough cardinal, they admit a good frame: a forking-like notion for types of singleton elements. $\mathbf{Theorem}$ (Superstability from categoricity) Let $K$ be a $(<κ)$-tame AEC with amalgamation. If $κ= \beth_κ> \text{LS} (K)$ and $K$ is categorical in a $λ> κ$, then: * $K$ is stable in all cardinals $\ge κ$. * $K$ is categorical in $κ$. * There is a type-full good $λ$-frame with underlying class $K…
Keisler proved that if $θ$ is a strong limit cardinal and $λ$ is a singular cardinal, then the transfer relation $θ\longrightarrowλ$ holds. In a previous paper, we studied initial elementary submodels of the $λ$-like models produced in the proof of Keisler's transfer theorem when $θ$ is further assumed to be regular i.e., $θ$ is strongly inaccessible. In this paper we deal with a much more difficult situation. Some years ago Ali Enayat asked the author whether Keisler's singular-like models can have elementary end extensions. We give a positive answer to this question.
Hellsten \cite{MR2026390} proved that when $κ$ is $Π^1_n$-indescribable, the \emph{$n$-club} subsets of $κ$ provide a filter base for the $Π^1_n$-indescribability ideal, and hence can also be used to give a characterization of $Π^1_n$-indescribable sets which resembles the definition of stationarity: a set $S\subseteqκ$ is $Π^1_n$-indescribable if and only if $S\cap C\neq\emptyset$ for every $n$-club $C\subseteqκ$. By replacing clubs with $n$-clubs in the definition of $\Box(κ)$, one obtains a $\Box(κ)$-like principle $\Box_n(κ)$, a version of which was first considered by Brickhill and Welch …
We show that in the theory ZF + DC + for every cardinal λ, the set of infinite subsets of λ is well-ordered (i.e., Shelah's AX4), the θ-function measuring the surjective size of the powersets P(κ) can take almost arbitrary values on any set of uncountable cardinals. This complements our results from [FK16], where we prove that in ZF (without DC), any possible behavior of the θ-function can be realized; and answers a question of Shelah in [She16], where he emphasizes that ZF + DC + AX4 is a reasonable theory, where much of set theory and combinatorics is possible.
We consider a class K of structures e.g. trees with omega +1 levels, metric spaces and mainly, classes of Abelian groups like the one mentioned in the title and the class of reduced separable (Abelian) p-groups. We say M in K is universal for K if any member N of K of cardinality not bigger than the cardinality of M can be embedded into M . This is a natural, often raised, problem. We try to draw consequences of cardinal arithmetic to non-existence of universal members for such natural classes.
