We investigate categoricity of abstract elementary classes without any remnants of compactness (like non-definability of well ordering, existence of E.M. models or existence of large cardinals). We prove (assuming a weak version of GCH around lambda) that if K is categorical in lambda, lambda^+, LS(K) <= lambda and 1 <= I(lambda^{++},K)< 2^{lambda^{++}} then K has a model in lambda^{+++} .
We continue the work of [KlSh:362] and prove that for lambda successor, a lambda-categorical theory T in L_{kappa^*, omega} is mu-categorical for every mu, mu <= lambda which is above the (2^{LS(T)})^+-beth cardinal.
We investigate, in ZFC, the behavior of abstract elementary classes (AECs) categorical in many successive small cardinals. We prove for example that a universal $\mathbb{L}_{ω_1, ω}$ sentence categorical on an end segment of cardinals below $\beth_ω$ must be categorical also everywhere above $\beth_ω$. This is done without any additional model-theoretic hypotheses (such as amalgamation or arbitrarily large models) and generalizes to the much broader framework of tame AECs with weak amalgamation and coherent sequences.
We study multidimensional diagrams in independent amalgamation in the framework of abstract elementary classes (AECs). We use them to prove the eventual categoricity conjecture for AECs, assuming a large cardinal axiom. More precisely, we show assuming the existence of a proper class of strongly compact cardinals that an AEC which has a single model of some high-enough cardinality will have a single model in any high-enough cardinal. Assuming a weak version of the generalized continuum hypothesis, we also establish the eventual categoricity conjecture for AECs with amalgamation.
Let K be an abstract elementary classes which has arbitrarily large models and satisfies the amalgamation and joint embedding properties. Theorem 1. Suppose K is χ-tame. If K is categorical in some λ^+ >LS(K) then it is categorical in all μ\geq (λ+χ)^+. Theorem 2. If K is LS(K)-tame and is categorical both in LS(K) and in LS(K)^+ then K is categorical in all μ\geq LS(K).
Inspired by Zermelo's quasi-categoricity result characterizing the models of second-order Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory $\text{ZFC}_2$, we investigate when those models are fully categorical, characterized by the addition to $\text{ZFC}_2$ either of a first-order sentence, a first-order theory, a second-order sentence or a second-order theory. Thus we mount an analysis of the categorical large cardinals. This mathematical analysis leads naturally to philosophical issues concerning structuralism and realism, including especially the tension between categoricity and reflection. Ultimately we ident…
Let K be an Abstract Elemenetary Class satisfying the amalgamation and the joint embedding property, let μbe the Hanf number of K. Suppose K is tame. MAIN COROLLARY: (ZFC) If K is categorical in a successor cardinal bigger than \beth_{(2^μ)^+} then K is categorical in all cardinals greater than \beth_{(2^μ)^+}. This is an improvment of a Theorem of Makkai and Shelah ([Sh285] who used a strongly compact cardinal for the same conclusion) and Shelah's downward categoricity theorem for AECs with amalgamation (from [Sh394]).
We investigate in ZFC what can be the family of large enough cardinals mu in which an a.e.c. K is categorical or even just solvable. We show that for not few cardinals lambda<mu there is a superlimit model in K_lambda. Moreover, our main result is that we can find a good lambda-frame s categorical in lambda such that K_s subseteq K_lambda. We then show how to use [Sh:705] to get categoricity in every large enough cardinality if K has cases of mu-amalgamation for enough mu and 2^mu<2^{mu^{+1}} <... < 2^{mu^{+n}}... for enough mu.
The categoricity spectrum of a class of structures is the collection of cardinals in which the class has a single model up to isomorphism. Assuming that cardinal exponentiation is injective (a weakening of the generalized continuum hypothesis, GCH), we give a complete list of the possible categoricity spectrums of an abstract elementary class with amalgamation and arbitrarily large models. Specifically, the categoricity spectrum is either empty, an end segment starting below the Hanf number, or a closed interval consisting of finite successors of the Löwenheim-Skolem-Tarski number (there are e…
We study uniqueness of limit models in abstract elementary classes (AECs) with no maximal models. We prove (assuming instances of diamonds) that categoricity in a cardinal of the form $μ^{+(n + 1)}$ implies the uniqueness of limit models of cardinality $μ^{+}, μ^{++}, \ldots, μ^{+n}$. This sheds light on a paper of Shelah and Villaveces, who were the first to consider uniqueness of limit models in this context. We also prove that (again assuming instances of diamonds) in an AEC with no maximal models, tameness (a locality property for types) together with categoricity in a proper class of card…
We show that Shelah's Eventual Categoricity Conjecture follows from the existence of class many strongly compact cardinals. This is the first time the consistency of this conjecture has been proven. We do so by showing that every AEC with $LS(K)$ below a strongly compact cardinal $κ$ is $< κ$ tame and applying the categoricity transfer of Grossberg and VanDieren. These techniques also apply to measurable and weakly compact cardinals and we prove similar tameness results under those hypotheses. We isolate a dual property to tameness, called \emph{type shortness}, and show that it follows simila…
Quasiminimal pregeometry classes were introduces by Zilber [2005a] to isolate the model theoretical core of several interesting examples. He proves that a quasiminimal pregeometry class satisfying an additional axiom, called excellence, is categorical in all uncountable cardinalities. Recently Bays et al. [2014] showed that excellence follows from the rest of axioms. In this paper we present a direct proof of the categoricity result without using excellence.
We point out a gap in Shelah's proof of the following result: $\mathbf{Claim}$ Let $K$ be an abstract elementary class categorical in unboundedly many cardinals. Then there exists a cardinal $λ$ such that whenever $M, N \in K$ have size at least $λ$, $M \le N$ if and only if $M \preceq_{L_{\infty, \text{LS} (K)^+}} N$. The importance of the claim lies in the following theorem, implicit in Shelah's work: $\mathbf{Theorem}$ Assume the claim. Let $K$ be an abstract elementary class categorical in unboundedly many cardinals. Then the class of $λ$ such that: 1) $K$ is categorical in $λ$; 2) $K$ has…
We prove that a universal class categorical in a high-enough cardinal is categorical on a tail of cardinals. As opposed to other results in the literature, we work in ZFC, do not require the categoricity cardinal to be a successor, do not assume amalgamation, and do not use large cardinals. Moreover we give an explicit bound on the "high-enough" threshold: $\mathbf{Theorem}$ Let $ψ$ be a universal $\mathbb{L}_{ω_1, ω}$ sentence. If $ψ$ is categorical in some $λ\ge \beth_{\beth_{ω_1}}$, then $ψ$ is categorical in all $λ' \ge \beth_{\beth_{ω_1}}$. As a byproduct of the proof, we show that a conj…
We prove: $\mathbf{Theorem}$ Let $K$ be a universal class. If $K$ is categorical in cardinals of arbitrarily high cofinality, then $K$ is categorical on a tail of cardinals. The proof stems from ideas of Adi Jarden and Will Boney, and also relies on a deep result of Shelah. As opposed to previous works, the argument is in ZFC and does not use the assumption of categoricity in a successor cardinal. The argument generalizes to abstract elementary classes (AECs) that satisfy a locality property and where certain prime models exist. Moreover assuming amalgamation we can give an explicit bound on t…
We prove Los conjecture = Morley theorem in ZF, with the same characterization (of first order countable theories categorical in aleph_alpha for some (equivalently for every) ordinal alpha>0. Another central result here is, in this context: the number of models of a countable first order T of cardinality aleph_alpha is either >=|alpha| for every aleph_αor it has a small upper bound (close to beth_2).
We study general methods to build forking-like notions in the framework of tame abstract elementary classes (AECs) with amalgamation. We show that whenever such classes are categorical in a high-enough cardinal, they admit a good frame: a forking-like notion for types of singleton elements. $\mathbf{Theorem}$ (Superstability from categoricity) Let $K$ be a $(<κ)$-tame AEC with amalgamation. If $κ= \beth_κ> \text{LS} (K)$ and $K$ is categorical in a $λ> κ$, then: * $K$ is stable in all cardinals $\ge κ$. * $K$ is categorical in $κ$. * There is a type-full good $λ$-frame with underlying class $K…
We investigate a notion called uniqueness in power kappa that is akin to categoricity in power kappa, but is based on the cardinality of the generating sets of models instead of on the cardinality of their universes. The notion is quite useful for formulating categoricity-like questions regarding powers below the cardinality of a theory. We prove, for (uncountable) universal theories T, that if T is kappa-unique for one uncountable kappa, then it is kappa-unique for every uncountable kappa ; in particular, it is categorical in powers greater than the cardinality of T.
We provide a complete classification of all the possible categoricity spectra, in terms of internal size, that can appear in a large accessible category with directed colimits, assuming the Singular Cardinal Hypothesis ($SCH$), and providing as well explicit threshold cardinals for eventual categoricity. This includes as a particular case the first complete classification of categoricity spectra of abstract elementary classes (AEC's) entirely in $ZFC$. More specifically, we have the following theorem: Let $\mathcal{K}$ be a large $κ$-accessible category with directed colimits. Assume the Singu…
We provide a proof, in $ZFC$, of Shelah's eventual categoricity conjecture for abstract elementary classes (AEC's). Moreover, assuming in addition the Singular Cardinal Hypothesis ($SCH$), we prove a direct generalization to the more general context of accessible categories with directed colimits. If $\mathcal{K}$ is such a category, we show that there is a cardinal $μ$ such that if $\mathcal{K}$ is $λ$-categorical for some $λ\geq μ$ (i.e., it has only one object of internal size $λ$ up to isomorphism), then $\mathcal{K}$ is eventually categorical (i.e., it is $λ'$-categorical for every $λ' \g…
Working in the context of $μ$-abstract elementary classes ($μ$-AECs) - or, equivalently, accessible categories with all morphisms monomorphisms - we examine the two natural notions of size that occur, namely cardinality of underlying sets and internal size. The latter, purely category-theoretic, notion generalizes e.g. density character in complete metric spaces and cardinality of orthogonal bases in Hilbert spaces. We consider the relationship between these notions under mild set-theoretic hypotheses, including weakenings of the singular cardinal hypothesis. We also establish preliminary resu…
We show that the condition of being categorical in a tail of cardinals can be characterized algebraically for several classes of modules. $Theorem.$ Assume $R$ is an associative ring with unity. 1. The class of locally pure-injective $R$-modules is $λ$-categorical in $all$ $λ> |R|+\aleph_0$ if and only if $R \cong M_n(D)$ for $D$ a division ring and $n \geq 1$. 2. The class of flat $R$-modules is $λ$-categorical in $all$ $λ> |R| + \aleph_0$ if and only if $R \cong M_n(k)$ for $k$ a local ring such that its maximal ideal is left $T$-nilpotent and $n \geq 1$. 3. Assume $R$ is a commutative ring.…
Shelah has provided sufficient conditions for an $L_{ω_1, ω}$-sentence $ψ$ to have arbitrarily large models and for a Morley-like theorem to hold of $ψ$. These conditions involve structural and set-theoretic assumptions on all the $\aleph_n$'s. Using tools of Boney, Shelah, and the second author, we give assumptions on $\aleph_0$ and $\aleph_1$ which suffice when $ψ$ is restricted to be universal: $\mathbf{Theorem}$ Assume $2^{\aleph_{0}} < 2 ^{\aleph_{1}}$. Let $ψ$ be a universal $L_{ω_{1}, ω}$-sentence. - If $ψ$ is categorical in $\aleph_{0}$ and $1 \leq I(ψ, \aleph_{1}) < 2 ^{\aleph_{1}}$, …
An inaccessible cardinal $κ$ is supercompact when $(κ, λ)$-ITP holds for all $λ\geq κ.$ We prove that if there is a model of $\ZFC$ with two supercompact cardinals, then there is a model of \ZFC where simultaneously $(\aleph_2, μ)$-ITP and $(\aleph_3, μ')$-ITP hold, for all $μ\geq \aleph_2$ and $μ'\geq \aleph_3.$

We prove the following continuous analogue of Vaught's Two-Cardinal Theorem: if for some $κ>λ\geq \aleph_0$, a continuous theory $T$ has a model with density character $κ$ which has a definable subset of density character $λ$, then $T$ has a model with density character $\aleph_1$ which has a separable definable subset. We also show that if we assume that $T$ is $ω$-stable, then if $T$ has a model of density character $\aleph_1$ with a separable definable set, then for any uncountable $κ$ we can find a model of $T$ with density character $κ$ which has a separable definable subset. In order to …
Tame abstract elementary classes are a broad nonelementary framework for model theory that encompasses several examples of interest. In recent years, progress toward developing a classification theory for them have been made. Abstract independence relations such as Shelah's good frames have been found to be key objects. Several new categoricity transfers have been obtained. We survey these developments using the following result (due to the second author) as our guiding thread: $\mathbf{Theorem}$ If a universal class is categorical in cardinals of arbitrarily high cofinality, then it is catego…
We show, assuming a mild set-theoretic hypothesis, that if an abstract elementary class (AEC) has a superstable-like forking notion for models of cardinality $λ$ and a superstable-like forking notion for models of cardinality $λ^+$, then orbital types over models of cardinality $λ^+$ are determined by their restrictions to submodels of cardinality $λ$. By a superstable-like forking notion, we mean here a good frame, a central concept of Shelah's book on AECs. It is known that locality of orbital types together with the existence of a superstable-like notion for models of cardinality $λ$ implie…
Motivated by showing that in ZFC we cannot construct a special Aronszajn tree on some cardinal greater than $\aleph_1$, we produce a model in which the approachability property fails (hence there are no special Aronszajn trees) at all regular cardinals in the interval $[\aleph_2, \aleph_{ω^2+3}]$ and $\aleph_{ω^2}$ is strong limit.
Let K be an abstract elementary class satisfying the joint embedding and the amalgamation properties. Let m be a cardinal above the the Löwenheim-Skolem number of the class. Suppose K satisfies the disjoint amalgamation property for limit models of cardinality m. If K is m-Galois-stable, has no m-Vaughtian Pairs, does not have long splitting chains, and satisfies locality of splitting, for the precise description of long splitting chains and locality}, then any two (m,sigma_i)-limits over M for (i in {1,2}) are isomorphic over M. This theorem extends results of Shelah, Kolman and Shelah, and S…
$\mathbf{Theorem.}$ Let $K$ be an abstract elementary class (AEC) with amalgamation and no maximal models. Let $λ> \text{LS} (K)$. If $K$ is categorical in $λ$, then the model of cardinality $λ$ is Galois-saturated. This answers a question asked independently by Baldwin and Shelah. We deduce several corollaries: $K$ has a unique limit model in each cardinal below $λ$, (when $λ$ is big-enough) $K$ is weakly tame below $λ$, and the thresholds of several existing categoricity transfers can be improved. We also prove a downward transfer of solvability (a version of superstability introduced by She…
We develop a notion of forking for Galois-types in the context of Abstract Elementary Classes (AECs). Under the hypotheses that an AEC $K$ is tame, type-short, and failure of an order-property, we consider {\bf Definition.} Let $M_0 \prec N$ be models from $K$ and $A$ be a set. We say that the Galois-type of $A$ over $M$ \emph{does not fork over $M_0$} iff for all small $a \in A$ and all small $N^- \prec N$, we have that Galois-type of $a$ over $N^-$ is realized in $M_0$. Assuming property (E) (see Definition 3.3) we show that this non-forking is a well behaved notion of independence, in parti…
We show that metric abstract elementary classes (mAECs) are, in the sense of [LR] (i.e. arXiv:1404.2528), coherent accessible categories with directed colimits, with concrete $\aleph_1$-directed colimits and concrete monomorphisms. More broadly, we define a notion of $κ$-concrete AEC---an AEC-like category in which only the $κ$-directed colimits need be concrete---and develop the theory of such categories, beginning with a category-theoretic analogue of Shelah's Presentation Theorem and a proof of the existence of an Ehrenfeucht-Mostowski functor in case the category is large. For mAECs in par…
We prove: Main Theorem: Let $\mathcal{K}$ be an abstract elementary class satisfying the joint embedding and the amalgamation properties with no maximal models of cardinality $μ$. Let $μ$ be a cardinal above the the Löwenheim-Skolem number of the class. If $\mathcal{K}$ is $μ$-Galois-stable, has no $μ$-Vaughtian Pairs, does not have long splitting chains, and satisfies locality of splitting, then any two $(μ,σ_\ell)$-limits over $M$, for $\ell\in\{1,2\}$, are isomorphic over $M$. This theorem extends results of Shelah from \cite{Sh394}, \cite{Sh576}, \cite{Sh600}, Kolman and Shelah in \cite{Ko…
Our goal is to study the pseudo-intersection and tower numbers on uncountable regular cardinals, whether these two cardinal characteristics are necessarily equal, and related problems on the existence of gaps. First, we prove that either $\mathfrak p(κ)=\mathfrak t(κ)$ or there is a $(\mathfrak p(κ),λ)$-gap of club-supported slaloms for some $λ< \mathfrak p(κ)$. While the existence of such gaps is unclear, this is a promising step to lift Malliaris and Shelah's proof of $\mathfrak p=\mathfrak t$ to uncountable cardinals. We do analyze gaps of slaloms and, in particular, show that $\mathfrak p(…
For $K$ an abstract elementary class with amalgamation and no maximal models, we show that categoricity in a high-enough cardinal implies structural properties such as the uniqueness of limit models and the existence of good frames. This improves several classical results of Shelah. $\mathbf{Theorem}$ Let $μ\ge \text{LS} (K)$. If $K$ is categorical in a $λ\ge \beth_{\left(2^μ\right)^+}$, then: 1) Whenever $M_0, M_1, M_2 \in K_μ$ are such that $M_1$ and $M_2$ are limit over $M_0$, we have $M_1 \cong_{M_0} M_2$. 2) If $μ> \text{LS} (K)$, the model of size $λ$ is $μ$-saturated. 3) If $μ\ge \beth_…
This paper is part of a program initiated by Saharon Shelah to extend the model theory of first order logic to the non-elementary setting of abstract elementary classes (AECs). An abstract elementary class is a semantic generalization of the class of models of a complete first order theory with the elementary substructure relation. We examine the symmetry property of splitting (previously isolated by the first author) in AECs with amalgamation that satisfy a local definition of superstability. The key results are a downward transfer of symmetry and a deduction of symmetry from failure of the o…
