In this series of papers we advance Ramsey theory of colorings over partitions. In this part, we concentrate on anti-Ramsey relations, or, as they are better known, strong colorings, and in particular solve two problems from [CKS21].
It is shown that for every infinite cardinal $λ$, a strong coloring on $λ^+$ by $λ$ colors over a partition can be stretched to one with $λ^{+}$ colors over the same partition. Also, a sufficient condition is given for when a strong coloring witnessing $Pr_1(\ldots)$ over a partition may be improved to witness $Pr_0(\ldots)$.
Since the classical theory corresponds to the special case of a partition with just one cell, the two results generalize pump-up theorems due to Eisworth and Shelah, respectively.
In this series of papers, we advance Ramsey theory of colorings over partitions. In this part, a correspondence between anti-Ramsey properties of partitions and chain conditions of the natural forcing notions that homogenize colorings over them is uncovered. At the level of the first uncountable cardinal this gives rise to a duality theorem under Martin's Axiom: a function $p:[ω_1]^2\rightarrowω$ witnesses a weak negative Ramsey relation when $p$ plays the role of a coloring if and only if a positive Ramsey relation holds over $p$ when $p$ plays the role of a partition. The consistency of posi…
We investigate families of partitions of omega which are related to special coideals, so-called happy families, and give a dual form of Ramsey ultrafilters in terms of partitions. The combinatorial properties of these partition-ultrafilters, which we call Ramseyan ultrafilters, are similar to those of Ramsey ultrafilters. For example it will be shown that dual Mathias forcing restricted to a Ramseyan ultrafilter has the same features as Mathias forcing restricted to a Ramsey ultrafilter. Further we introduce an ordering on the set of partition-filters and consider the dual form of some cardina…
We give a characterizations of Ramsey ultrafilters on $\mathscr P(ω)$ in terms of functions $f:ω^n\toω$ and their ultrafilter extensions. To do this, we prove that for any partition $\mathcal P$ of $[ω]^n$ there is a finite partition~$\mathcal Q$ of $[ω]^{2n}$ such that any set $X\subseteq ω$ that is homogeneous for $\mathcal Q$ is a finite union of sets that are canonical for $\mathcal P$.
The strongest type of coloring of pairs of countable ordinals, gotten by Todorcevic from a strongly Luzin set, is shown to be equivalent to the existence of a nonmeager set of reals of size $\aleph_1$. In the other direction, it is shown that the existence of both a strongly Luzin set and a coherent Souslin tree is compatible with the existence of a countable partition of pairs of countable ordinals such that no coloring is strong over it. This clarifies the interaction between a gallery of coloring assertions going back to Luzin and Sierpinski a hundred years ago.
We investigate the existence of metric spaces which, for any coloring with a fixed number of colors, contain monochromatic isomorphic copies of a fixed starting space K. In the main theorem we construct such a space of size \(2^{\aleph_0}\) for colorings with \(\aleph_0\) colors and any metric space \(K\) of size \(\aleph_0\). We also give a slightly weaker theorem for countable ultrametric \(K\) where, however, the resulting space has size~\(\aleph_1\).
We prove some results on the border of Ramsey theory (finite partition calculus) and model theory. Also a beginning of classification theory of finite models in undertaken.
We study a pair of weakenings of the classical partition relation $ν\rightarrow (μ)^2_λ$ recently introduced by Bergfalk-Hrušák-Shelah and Bergfalk, respectively. Given an edge-coloring of the complete graph on $ν$-many vertices, these weakenings assert the existence of monochromatic subgraphs exhibiting high degrees of connectedness rather than the existence of complete monochromatic subgraphs asserted by the classical relations. As a result, versions of these weakenings can consistently hold at accessible cardinals where their classical analogues would necessarily fail. We prove some complem…
This article highlights historical achievements in the partition theory of countable homogeneous relational structures, and presents recent work, current trends, and open problems. Exciting recent developments include new methods involving logic, topological Ramsey spaces, and category theory. The paper concentrates on big Ramsey degrees, presenting their essential structure where known and outlining areas for further development. Cognate areas, including infinite dimensional Ramsey theory of homogeneous structures and partition theory of uncountable structures, are also discussed.
We compare the strength of polychromatic and monochromatic Ramsey theory in several set-theoretic domains. We show that the rainbow Ramsey theorem does not follow from ZF, nor does the rainbow Ramsey theorem imply Ramsey's theorem over ZF. Extending the classical result of Erd{ö}s and Rado we show that the axiom of choice precludes the natural infinite exponent partition relations for polychromatic Ramsey theory. We introduce rainbow Ramsey ultrafilters, a polychromatic analogue of the usual Ramsey ultrafilters. We investigate the relationship of rainbow Ramsey ultrafilters with various specia…
We analyze the Dual Ramsey Theorem for $k$ partitions and $\ell$ colors ($\mathsf{DRT}^k_\ell$) in the context of reverse math, effective analysis, and strong reductions. Over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$, the Dual Ramsey Theorem stated for Baire colorings is equivalent to the statement for clopen colorings and to a purely combinatorial theorem $\mathsf{cDRT}^k_\ell$. When the theorem is stated for Borel colorings and $k\geq 3$, the resulting principles are essentially relativizations of $\mathsf{cDRT}^k_\ell$. For each $α$, there is a computable Borel code for a $Δ^0_α$ coloring such that any partition h…
We show that large sets in Ellentuck topology (i.e. sets which are not nowhere Ramsey) do not admit Kuratowski's partition. The similar result is true for the Sacks real forcing.
Topological Ramsey spaces are spaces which support infinite dimensional Ramsey theory similarly to the Ellentuck space. Each topological Ramsey space is endowed with a partial ordering which can be modified to a $σ$-closed `almost reduction' relation analogously to the partial ordering of `mod finite' on $[ω]^ω$. Such forcings add new ultrafilters satisfying weak partition relations and have complete combinatorics. In cases where a forcing turned out to be equivalent to a topological Ramsey space, the strong Ramsey-theoretic techniques have aided in a fine-tuned analysis of the Rudin-Keisler a…
In this paper, we discuss an improvement of an algorithm to search for primes $p$ and coset-partitions of Z/pZ* that yield Ramsey algebras over Z/pZ. We also prove an upper bound on the modulus p in terms of the number of cosets. We have, as a corollary, that there is no prime $p$ for which there exists a partition of Z/pZ* into 13 cosets that yields a 13-color Ramsey algebra. Thus A263308(13) = 0.
We define well-connectedness, an order-theoretic notion of largeness whose associated partition relations $ν\to_{wc}(μ)_λ^2$ formally weaken those of the classical Ramsey relations $ν\to(μ)_λ^2$. We show that it is consistent that the arrows $\to_{wc}$ and $\to$ are, in infinite contexts, essentially indistinguishable. We then show, in contrast, that in Mitchell's model of the tree property at $ω_2$, the relation $ω_2\to_{wc}(ω_2)_ω^2$ does hold, and that the consistency strength of this relation holding is precisely a weakly compact cardinal. These investigations may be viewed as augmenting t…
We define a collection of topological Ramsey spaces consisting of equivalence relations on $ω$ with the property that the minimal representatives of the equivalence classes alternate according to a fixed partition of $ω$. To prove the associated pigeonhole principles, we make use of the left-variable Hales-Jewett theorem and its extension to an infinite alphabet. We also show how to transfer the corresponding infinite-dimensional Ramsey results to equivalence relations on countable limit ordinals (up to a necessary restriction on the set of minimal representatives of the equivalence classes) i…
Extending a result of K. Milliken \cite{Mi2}, in this paper we prove a Ramsey classification result for equivalence relations defined on uniform families of finite strong subtrees of a finite sequence $(U_i)_{i\in d}$ of fixed trees $U_i$, $i\in d$, that have a finite uniform branching but are of infinite length.
We study four families of consequences of Ramsey's Theorem from the viewpoint of reverse mathematics. The first, which we call the Achromatic Ramsey Theorem, is from a partition relation introduced by Erdős, Hajnal and Rado: $ω\to [ω]^r_{c,\leq d}$, which asserts that for every $f: [ω]^r \to c$ there exists an infinite $H$ with $|f([H]^r)| \leq d$. The second and third are the Free Set Theorem and the Thin Set Theorem, which were introduced by Harvey Friedman. And the last is the Rainbow Ramsey Theorem. We show that, most theorems from these families are quite weak, i.e., they are strictly wea…
A general method for constructing a new class of topological Ramsey spaces is presented. Members of such spaces are infinite sequences of products of Fraïssé classes of finite relational structures satisfying the Ramsey property. The Product Ramsey Theorem of Sokič is extended to equivalence relations for finite products of structures from Fraïssé classes of finite relational structures satisfying the Ramsey property and the Order-Prescribed Free Amalgamation Property. This is essential to proving Ramsey-classification theorems for equivalence relations on fronts, generalizing the Pudlák-Rödl …
For positive integers $k < n$ such that $k$ divides $n$, let $(n)^k_{\hom}$ be the set of homogeneous $k$-partitions of $\{1, \dots, n\}$, that is, the set of partitions of $\{1, \dots, n\}$ into $k$ classes of the same cardinality. In the article "Ramsey properties of infinite measure algebras and topological dynamics of the group of measure preserving automorphisms: some results and an open problem" by Kechris, Sokic, and Todorcevic, the following question was asked: Is it true that given positive integers $k < m$ and $N$ such that $k$ divides $m$, there exists a number $n>m$ such that $m$ d…
We further develop the theory of layered semigroups, as introduced by Farah, Hindman and McLeod, providing a general framework to prove Ramsey statements about such a semigroup $S$. By nonstandard and topological arguments, we show Ramsey statements on $S$ are implied by the existence of "coherent" sequences in $S$. This framework allows us to formalise and prove many results in Ramsey theory, including Gowers' $\mathrm{FIN}_k$ theorem, the Graham-Rothschild theorem, and Hindman's finite sums theorem. Other highlights include: a simple nonstandard proof of the Graham-Rothschild theorem for str…
We prove general sufficient and necessary conditions for the partition regularity of Diophantine equations, which extend the classic Rado's Theorem by covering large classes of nonlinear equations. Sufficient conditions are obtained by exploiting algebraic properties in the space of ultrafilters betaN, grounding on combinatorial properties of positive density sets and IP sets. Necessary conditions are proved by a new technique in nonstandard analysis, based on the use of the relation of u-equivalence for the hypernatural numbers *N.
We show a general scheme of Ramsey-type results for partitions of countable sets of finite functions, where "one piece is big" is interpreted in the language originating in creature forcing. The heart of our proofs follows Glazer's proof of the Hindman Theorem, so we prove the existence of idempotent ultrafilters with respect to suitable operation. Then we deduce partition theorems related to creature forcings.
We give a negative answer to a question of Erdos and Hajnal: it is consistent that GCH holds and there is a colouring $c:[{ω_2}]^2\to 2$ establishing $ω_2 \not\to [(ω_1;ω)]^2_2$ such that some colouring $g:[ω_1]^2\to 2$ can not be embedded into $c$. It is also consistent that $2^{ω_1}$ is arbitrarily large, and a function $g$ establishes $2^{ω_1} \not\to [(ω_1,ω_2)]^2_{ω_1}$ such that there is no uncountable $g$-rainbow subset of $2^{ω_1}$. We also show that for each $k\in ω$ it is consistent with Martin's Axiom that the negative partition relation $ω_1 \not\to^* [(ω_1;ω_1)]_{k-bdd}$ holds.
We give a general method to reduce Hurewicz-type selection hypotheses into standard ones. The method covers the known results of this kind and gives some new ones. Building on that, we show how to derive Ramsey theoretic characterizations for these selection hypotheses.
We study the existence of transformations of the transfinite plane that allow one to reduce Ramsey-theoretic statements concerning uncountable Abelian groups into classical partition relations for uncountable cardinals. To exemplify: we prove that for every inaccessible cardinal $κ$, if $κ$ admits a stationary set that does not reflect at inaccessibles, then the classical negative partition relation $κ\nrightarrow[κ]^2_κ$ implies that for every Abelian group $(G,+)$ of size $κ$, there exists a map $f:G\rightarrow G$ such that, for every $X\subseteq G$ of size $κ$ and every $g\in G$, there exis…
Motivated by Tukey classification problems and building on work in \cite{Dobrinen/Todorcevic11}, we develop a new hierarchy of topological Ramsey spaces $\mathcal{R}_α$, $α<ω_1$. These spaces form a natural hierarchy of complexity, $\mathcal{R}_0$ being the Ellentuck space, and for each $α<ω_1$, $\mathcal{R}_{α+1}$ coming immediately after $\mathcal{R}_α$ in complexity. Associated with each $\mathcal{R}_α$ is an ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}_α$, which is Ramsey for $\mathcal{R}_α$, and in particular, is a rapid p-point satisfying certain partition properties. We prove Ramsey-classification theorems…
Given two combinatorial notions $\mathsf{P}_0$ and $\mathsf{P}_1$, can we encode $\mathsf{P}_0$ via $\mathsf{P}_1$. In this talk we address the question where $\mathsf{P}_0$ is 3-coloring of integers and $\mathsf{P}_1$ is product of finitely many 2-colorings of integers. We firstly reduce the question to a lemma which asserts that certain $Π^0_1$ class of colorings admit two members violating a particular combinatorial constraint. Then we took a digression to see how complex does the class has to be so as to maintain the cross constraint. We weaken the two members in the lemma in certain way t…
Milliken's tree theorem is a deep result in combinatorics that generalizes a vast number of other results in the subject, most notably Ramsey's theorem and its many variants and consequences. Motivated by a question of Dobrinen, we initiate the study of Milliken's tree theorem from the point of view of computability theory. Our advance here stems from a careful analysis of the Halpern-Laüchli theorem which shows that it can be carried out effectively (i.e., that it is computably true). We use this as the basis of a new inductive proof of Milliken's tree theorem that permits us to gauge its eff…
