We characterize microlocal regularity of Colombeau generalized functions by an appropriate extension of the classical notion of micro-ellipticity to pseudodifferential operators with slow scale generalized symbols. Thus we obtain an alternative, yet equivalent, way to determine generalized wave front sets, which is analogous to the original definition of the wave front set of distributions via intersections over characteristic sets. The new methods are then applied to regularity theory of generalized solutions of (pseudo-)differential equations, where we extend the general noncharacteristic regularity result for distributional solutions and consider propagation of generalized singularities for homogeneous first-order hyperbolic equations.
In the first part of the paper the authors study the minimal and maximal extension of a class of weighted pseudodifferential operators in the Fréchet space $L^p_{\rm loc}(Ω)$. In the second one non homogeneous microlocal properties are introduced and propagation of Sobolev singularities for solutions to (pseudo)differential equations is given. For both the arguments actual examples are provided.
We investigate global microlocal properties of localization operators and Shubin pseudodifferential operators. The microlocal regularity is measured in terms of a scale of Shubin-type Sobolev spaces. In particular, we prove microlocality and microellipticity of these operators.
We study the microlocal kernel of h-pseudodifferential operators P(x,hD)-z, where z belongs to some neighborhood of size O(h) of a critical value of its principal symbol. We suppose that this critical value corresponds to a hyperbolic fixed point of the associated Hamiltonian flow. First we describe propagation of singularities at such a hyperbolic fixed point, both in the analytic and in the smooth category. In both cases, we show that the null solution is the only element of this microlocal kernel which vanishes on the stable incoming manifold, but for energies z in some discrete set. For en…
This is a introductory course focusing some basic notions in pseudodifferential operators ($Ψ$DOs) and microlocal analysis. We start this lecture notes with some notations and necessary preliminaries. Then the notion of symbols and $Ψ$DOs are introduced. In Chapter 3 we define the oscillatory integrals of different types. Chapter 4 is devoted to the stationary phase lemmas. One of the features of the lecture is that the stationary phase lemmas are proved for not only compactly supported functions but also for more general functions with certain order of smoothness and certain order of growth a…
We use radial estimates for pseudodifferential operators to describe long time evolution of solutions to $ i u_t - P u = f $ where $ P $ is a self-adjoint 0th order pseudodifferential operator satisfying hyperbolic dynamical assumptions and where $ f $ is smooth. This is motivated by recent results of Colin de Verdière and Saint-Raymond [arXiv:1801.05582] concerning a microlocal model of internal waves in stratified fluids.
In this work we produce microlocal normal forms for pseudodifferential operators which have a Lagrangian submanifold of radial points. This answers natural questions about such operators and their associated classical dynamics. In a sequel, we will give a microlocal parametrix construction, as well as a construction of a microlocal Poisson operator, for such pseudodifferential operators.
We develop a semiclassical second microlocal calculus of pseudodifferential operators associated to linear coisotropic submanifolds $\mathcal{C}\subset T^* \mathbb{T}^n$, where $\mathbb{T}^n = \mathbb{R}^n / \mathbb{Z}^n$. First microlocalization is localization in phase space $T^* \mathbb{T}^n$; second microlocalization is finer localization near a submanifold of $T^* \mathbb{T}^n$. Our second microlocal operators test distributions on $\mathbb{T}^n$ (e.g., Laplace eigenfunctions) for a coisotropic wavefront set, a second microlocal measure of absence of \emph{coisotropic regularity}. This wa…
Some results of microlocal continuity for pseudodifferential operators whose non regular symbols belong to weighted Fourier Lebesgue spaces are given. Inhomogeneous local and microlocal propagation of singularities of Fourier Lebesgue type are then studied, with applications to some classes of semilinear equations.
A class of pseudodifferential operators on the Heisenberg group is defined. As it should be, this class is an algebra containing the class of differential operators. Furthermore, those pseudodifferential operators act continuously on Sobolev spaces and the loss of derivatives may be controled by the order of the operator. Although a large number of works have been devoted in the past to the construction and the study of algebras of variable-coefficient operators, including some very interesting works on the Heisenberg group, our approach is different, and in particular puts into light microloc…

We study the continuity in weighted Fourier Lebesgue spaces for a class of pseudodifferential operators, whose symbol has finite Fourier Lebesgue regularity with respect to $x$ and satisfies a quasi-homogeneous decay of derivatives with respect to the $ξ$ variable. Applications to Fourier Lebesgue microlocal regularity of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations are given.
We use microlocal radial estimates to prove the full limiting absorption principle for $P$, a self-adjoint 0th order pseudodifferential operator satisfying hyperbolic dynamical assumptions as of Colin de Verdière and Saint-Raymond. We define the scattering matrix for $P-ω$ with generic $ω\in \mathbb R$ and show that the scattering matrix extends to a unitary operator on appropriate $L^2$ spaces. After conjugation with natural reference operators, the scattering matrix becomes a $0$th order Fourier integral operator with a canonical relation associated to the bicharacteristics of $P-ω$. The ope…
Using a standard linearization technique and previously obtained microlocal properties for pseudodifferential operators with smooth coefficients, the authors state results of microlocal regularity in generalized Besov spaces for solutions to non linear PDE.
We study an anisotropic version of the Shubin calculus of pseudodifferential operators on $\mathbf R^d$. Anisotropic symbols and Gabor wave front sets are defined in terms of decay or growth along curves in phase space of power type parametrized by one positive parameter that distinguishes space and frequency variables. We show that this gives subcalculi of Shubin's isotropic calculus, and we show a microlocal as well as a microelliptic inclusion in the framework. Finally we prove an inclusion for the anisotropic Gabor wave front set of chirp type oscillatory functions with a real polynomial p…
We give a factorization procedure for a strictly hyperbolic partial differential operator of second order with logarithmic slow scale coefficients. From this we can microlocally diagonalize the full wave operator which results in a coupled system of two first-order pseudodifferential equations in a microlocal sense. Under the assumption that the full wave equation is microlocal regular in a fixed domain of the phase space, we can approximate the problem by two one-way wave equations where a dissipative term is added to suppress singularities outside the given domain. We obtain well-posedness o…
We study strictly hyperbolic partial differential operators of second order with non-smooth coefficients. After modelling them as semiclassical Colombeau equations of log-type we provide a factorization procedure on some time-space-frequency domain. As a result the operator is written as a product of two semiclassical first-order constituents of log-type which approximates the modelled operator microlocally at infinite points. We then present a diagonalization method so that microlocally at infinity the governing equation is equal to a coupled system of two semiclassical first-order strictly h…
In this article, we shall construct the resolvent of Laplacian at high energies near the spectrum on non-product conic manifolds with a single cone tip. Microlocally, the resolvent kernel is the sum of b-pseudodifferential operators, scattering pseudodifferential operators and intersecting Legendrian distributions. As an application, we shall establish Strichartz estimates for Schrödinger equations on non-compact manifolds with multiple non-product conic singularities.
We consider scattering theory for a pair of operators $H_0$ and $H=H_0+V$ on $L^2(M,m)$, where $M$ is a Riemannian manifold, $H_0$ is a multiplication operator on $M$ and $V$ is a pseudodifferential operator of order $-μ$, $μ>1$. We show that a time-dependent scattering theory can be constructed, and the scattering matrix is a pseudodifferential operator on each energy surface. Moreover, the principal symbol of the scattering matrix is given by a Born approximation type function. The main motivation of the study comes from applications to discrete Schrödigner operators, but it also applies to …
We characterize the Schwartz kernels of pseudodifferential operators of Shubin type by means of an FBI transform. Based on this we introduce as a generalization a new class of tempered distributions called Shubin conormal distributions. We study their transformation behavior, normal forms and microlocal properties.
A one-way wave equation is an evolution equation in one of the space directions that describes (approximately) a wave field. The exact wave field is approximated in a high frequency, microlocal sense. Here we derive the pseudodifferential one-way wave equation for an inhomogeneous acoustic medium using a known factorization argument. We give explicitly the two highest order terms, that are necessary for approximating the solution. A wave front (singularity) whose propagation velocity has non-zero component in the special direction is correctly described. The equation can't describe singulariti…
Summarizing basic facts from abstract topological modules over Colombeau generalized complex numbers we discuss duality of Colombeau algebras. In particular, we focus on generalized delta functionals and operator kernels as elements of dual spaces. A large class of examples is provided by pseudodifferential operators acting on Colombeau algebras. By a refinement of symbol calculus we review a new characterization of the wave front set for generalized functions with applications to microlocal analysis.
In this article, we consider a generalized Radon transform that comes up in ultrasound reflection tomography. In our model, the ultrasound emitter and receiver move at a constant distance apart along a circle. We analyze the microlocal properties of the transform $R$ that arises from this model. As a consequence, we show that for distributions with support sufficiently inside the circle, $R^*R$ is an elliptic pseudodifferential operator of order $-1$ and hence all the singularities of such distributions can be recovered.
We prove the spectral invariance of the algebra of classical pseudodifferential boundary value problems on manifolds with conical singularities in the Lp-setting. As a consequence we also obtain the spectral invariance of the classical Boutet de Monvel algebra of zero order operators with parameters. In order to establish these results, we show the equivalence of Fredholm property and ellipticity for both cases.
Let $H$ be a self-adjoint isotropic elliptic pseudodifferential operator of order $2$. Denote by $u(t)$ the solution of the Schrödinger equation $(i\partial_t - H)u = 0$ with initial data $u(0) = u_0$. If $u_0$ is compactly supported the solution $u(t)$ is smooth for small $t > 0$, but not for all $t$. We determine the wavefront set of $u(t)$ in terms of the wavefront set of $u_0$ and the principal and subprincipal symbol of $H$.
In a previous paper by the second author, we discussed a characterization of the microlocal singularities for solutions to Schrödinger equations with long range type perturbations, using solutions to a Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In this paper we show that we may use Dollard type approximate solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation if the perturbation satisfies somewhat stronger conditions. As applications, we describe the propagation of microlocal singularities for $e^{itH_0}e^{-itH}$ when the potential is asymptotically homogeneous as $|x|\to\infty$, where $H$ is our Schrödinger operator, and…
This article addresses linear hyperbolic partial differential equations and pseudodifferential equations with strongly singular coefficients and data, modelled as members of algebras of generalised functions. We employ the recently developed theory of generalised Fourier integral operators to construct parametrices for the solutions and to describe propagation of singularities in this setting. As required tools, the construction of generalised solutions to eikonal and transport equations is given and results on the microlocal regularity of the kernels of generalised Fourier integral operators …
Sobolev wavefront sets and $2$-microlocal spaces play a key role in describing and analyzing the singularities of distributions in microlocal analysis and solutions of partial differential equations. Employing the continuous shearlet transform to Sobolev spaces, in this paper we characterize the microlocal Sobolev wavefront sets, the $2$-microlocal spaces, and local Hölder spaces of distributions/functions. We then establish the connections among Sobolev wavefront sets, $2$-microlocal spaces, and local Hölder spaces through the continuous shearlet transform.
Generalized Fourier integral operators (FIOs) acting on Colombeau algebras are defined. This is based on a theory of generalized oscillatory integrals (OIs) whose phase functions as well as amplitudes may be generalized functions of Colombeau type. The mapping properties of these FIOs are studied as the composition with a generalized pseudodifferential operator. Finally, the microlocal Colombeau regularity for OIs and the influence of the FIO action on generalized wave front sets are investigated. This theory of generalized FIOs is motivated by the need of a general framework for partial diffe…
We consider a specific class of manifolds with singularities, namely, stratified manifolds, and describe a class of pseudodifferential operators (PsiDO) related to differential operators with degeneration of first-order with respect to the distance to the strata on such manifolds. (For manifolds with isolated singularities, this is a Fuchs type degeneration.) We restrict ourselves to the case of zero-order operators in L^2 spaces. The definition of PsiDO adopted in our approach uses induction over the number of strata in the manifold. The induction process naturally involves PsiDO with paramet…
We develop a second-microlocal calculus of pseudodifferential operators in the semiclassical setting. These operators test for Lagrangian regularity of semiclassical families of distributions on a manifold $X$ with respect to a Lagrangian submanifold of $T^*X.$ The construction of the calculus, closely analogous to one performed by Bony in the setting of homogeneous Lagrangians, proceeds via the consideration of a model case, that of the zero section of $T^*\mathbb{R}^n,$ and conjugation by appropriate Fourier integral operators. We prove a propagation theorem for the associated wavefront set …
The purpose of this article is to investigate the structure of singular measures from a microlocal perspective. Motivated by the result of De Philippis-Rindler [10] and the notions of wave cone of Murat-Tartar [19,20,26,27] and of polarisation set of Denker [9] we introduce a notion of $L^1$-regularity wave front set for scalar and vector distributions. Our main result is a proper microlocal characterisation of the support of the singular part of tempered Radon measures and of their polar functions at these points. The proof is based on De Philippis-Rindler's approach reinforced by microlocal …
We prove a microlocal smoothing effect of Schrödinger equations on manifolds. We employ radially homogeneous wavefront sets introduced by Ito and Nakamura (Amer. J. Math., 2009). In terms of radially homogeneous wavefront sets, we can apply our theory to both of asymptotically conical and hyperbolic manifolds. We relate wavefront sets in initial states to radially homogeneous wavefront sets in states after a time development. We also prove a relation between radially homogeneous wavefront sets and homogeneous wavefront sets and prove a special case of Nakamura (2005).
We consider the generalized Radon transform (defined in terms of smooth weight functions) on hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We analyze general filtered backprojection type reconstruction methods for limited data with filters given by general pseudodifferential operators. We provide microlocal characterizations of visible and added singularities in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and define modified versions of reconstruction operators that do not generate added artifacts. We calculate the symbol of our general reconstruction operators as pseudodifferential operators, and provide conditions for the filters unde…
We introduce a new type of local and microlocal asymptotic analysis in algebras of generalized functions, based on the presheaf properties of those algebras and on the properties of their elements with respect to a regularizing parameter. Contrary to the more classical frequential analysis based on the Fourier transform, we can describe a singular asymptotic spectrum which has good properties with respect to nonlinear operations. In this spirit we give several examples of propagation of singularities through nonlinear operators.
Seismic data are commonly modeled by a high-frequency single scattering approximation. This amounts to a linearization in the medium coefficient about a smooth background. The discontinuities are contained in the medium perturbation. The wave solutions in the background medium admit a geometrical optics representation. Here we describe the wave propagation in the background medium by a one-way wave equation. Based on this we derive the double-square-root equation, which is a first order pseudodifferential equation, that describes the continuation of seismic data in depth. We consider the model…
In this paper we describe the propagation of smooth (C^\infty) and Sobolev singularities for the wave equation on smooth manifolds with corners M equipped with a Riemannian metric g. That is, for X=MxR, P=D_t^2-Δ_M, and u locally in H^1 solving Pu=0 with homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, we show that the wave front set of u is a union of maximally extended generalized broken bicharacteristics. This result is a smooth counterpart of Lebeau's results for the propagation of analytic singularities on real analytic manifolds with appropriately stratified boundary. Our methods re…
In this paper we study microlocal singularities of solutions to Schrodinger equations on scattering manifolds, i.e., noncompact Riemannian manifolds with asymptotically conic ends. We characterize the wave front set of the solutions in terms of the initial condition and the classical scattering maps under the nontrapping condition. Our result is closely related to a recent work by Hassell and Wunsch, though our model is more general and the method, which relies heavily on scattering theoretical ideas, is simple and quite different. In particular, we use Egorov-type argument in the standard pse…
In a recent paper O. Gannot and M. Wrochna considered the Klein-Gordon equation on an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime subject to Robin boundary conditions, proving in particular a propagation of singularity theorem. In this work we generalize their result considering a more general class of boundary conditions implemented on the conformal boundary via pseudodifferential operators of suitable order. Using techniques proper of $b$-calculus and of twisted Sobolev spaces, we prove also for the case in hand a propagation of singularity theorem along generalized broken bicharacteristics, hig…
We first establish the presence of a diffractive front in the fundamental solution of the wave operator with a diract delta intial condition in two dimensional euclidean space caused by the potentials perturbation on the spherical laplacian. This motivates a result which restricts the propagation of singularities for the wave operator with a more general potential to precisely these diffractive fronts higher dimensional euclidean spaces. This is proven using microlocal energy estimates.
We consider the Cauchy problem and the source problem for normally hyperbolic operators on the Minkowski spacetime, and study the determination of solutions from their integrals along null geodesics. For the Cauchy problem, we give a new proof of the stable determination result obtained in Vasy and Wang [12]. For the source problem, we obtain stable determination for sources with space-like singularities. Our proof is based on the microlocal analysis of the normal operator of the light ray transform composed with the parametrix for strictly hyperbolic operators.
We describe the propagation of singularities of tempered distributional generalized eigenfunctions of many-body Hamiltonians at non-threshold energies under the assumption that the inter-particle interactions are real-valued polyhomogeneous symbols of order -1 (e.g. Coulomb-type, but without the singularity at the origin). Here the term `singularity' refers to a microlocal description of the lack of decay at infinity. We use this result to describe the wave front relation of the S-matrices. We also analyze Lagrangian properties of this relation, which shows that the relation is not `too large'…
In this paper we describe the propagation of singularities of tempered distributional generalized eigenfunctions of many-body Hamiltonians under the assumption that no subsystem has a bound state and that the two-body interactions are real-valued polyhomogeneous symbols of order -1 (e.g. Coulomb-type with the singularity at the origin removed). Here the term 'singularity' provides a microlocal description of the lack of decay at infinity. We use this result to prove that the wave front relation of the free-to-free S-matrix (which, under our assumptions, is all of the S-matrix) is given by the …
In this paper we develop the foundations for microlocal analysis on supermanifolds. Making use of pseudodifferential operators on supermanifolds as introduced by Rempel and Schmitt, we define a suitable notion of super wavefront set for superdistributions which generalizes Dencker's polarization sets for vector-valued distributions to supergeometry. In particular, our super wavefront sets detect polarization information of the singularities of superdistributions. We prove a refined pullback theorem for superdistributions along supermanifold morphisms, which as a special case establishes criter…
In this work we study the wavefront set of a solution u to Pu = f, where P is a pseudodifferential operator on a manifold with real-valued homogeneous principal symbol p, when the Hamilton vector field corresponding to p is radial on a Lagrangian submanifold contained in the characteristic set of P. The standard propagation of singularities theorem of Duistermaat-Hormander gives no information at the Lagrangian submanifold. By adapting the standard positive-commutator estimate proof of this theorem, we are able to conclude additional regularity at a point q in this radial set, assuming some re…
We consider the perturbed covariant wave equation $\Box_{g_{M,a}} Ψ= \varepsilon \mathbf{B} Ψ$ on the exterior of a fixed subextremal Kerr spacetime $\left(\mathcal{M},g_{M,a}\right)$. Here $\mathbf{B}$ is a suitably regular first order differential operator respecting the symmetries of Kerr whose coefficients are assumed to decay in space but not in time. We establish integrated decay estimates for solutions of the associated Cauchy problem. The proof adapts the framework introduced by Dafermos--Rodnianski--Shlapentokh-Rothman \cite{DRSR} in the $\varepsilon=0$ case. We combine their estimate…
In this expository note we present an introduction to the Gabor wave front set. As is often the case, this tool in microlocal analysis has been introduced and reinvented in different forms which turn out to be equivalent or intimately related. We provide a short review of the history of this notion and then focus on some recent variations inspired by function spaces in time-frequency analysis. Old and new results are presented, together with a number of concrete examples and applications to the problem of propagation of singularities.
