Lecture notes from 2008 CMI/ETH Summer School on Evolution Equations. These notes are an informal introduction to the applications of microlocal methods in the study of linear evolution equations and spectral theory. Calculi of pseudodifferential operators and Fourier integral operators are discussed and axiomatized, but not constructed: the focus is on how to apply these tools.
We discuss the microlocal Gevrey smoothing effect for the Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients via the propagation property of the wave front set of homogenous type. We apply the microlocal exponential estimates in a Gevrey case to prove our result.
We give a factorization procedure for a strictly hyperbolic partial differential operator of second order with logarithmic slow scale coefficients. From this we can microlocally diagonalize the full wave operator which results in a coupled system of two first-order pseudodifferential equations in a microlocal sense. Under the assumption that the full wave equation is microlocal regular in a fixed domain of the phase space, we can approximate the problem by two one-way wave equations where a dissipative term is added to suppress singularities outside the given domain. We obtain well-posedness o…
Some results of microlocal continuity for pseudodifferential operators whose non regular symbols belong to weighted Fourier Lebesgue spaces are given. Inhomogeneous local and microlocal propagation of singularities of Fourier Lebesgue type are then studied, with applications to some classes of semilinear equations.
We study strictly hyperbolic partial differential operators of second order with non-smooth coefficients. After modelling them as semiclassical Colombeau equations of log-type we provide a factorization procedure on some time-space-frequency domain. As a result the operator is written as a product of two semiclassical first-order constituents of log-type which approximates the modelled operator microlocally at infinite points. We then present a diagonalization method so that microlocally at infinity the governing equation is equal to a coupled system of two semiclassical first-order strictly h…
In this text, we shall give an outline of some recent results (see \ccite{bahourichemin2} \ccite{bahourichemin3} and \ccite{bahourichemin4}) of local wellposedness for two types of quasilinear wave equations for initial data less regular than what is required by the energy method. To go below the regularity prescribed by the classical theory of strictly hyperbolic equations, we have to use the particular properties of the wave equation. The result concerning the first kind of equations must be understood as a Strichartz estimate for wave operators whose coefficients are only Lipschitz while th…
We use radial estimates for pseudodifferential operators to describe long time evolution of solutions to $ i u_t - P u = f $ where $ P $ is a self-adjoint 0th order pseudodifferential operator satisfying hyperbolic dynamical assumptions and where $ f $ is smooth. This is motivated by recent results of Colin de Verdière and Saint-Raymond [arXiv:1801.05582] concerning a microlocal model of internal waves in stratified fluids.
We characterize microlocal regularity of Colombeau generalized functions by an appropriate extension of the classical notion of micro-ellipticity to pseudodifferential operators with slow scale generalized symbols. Thus we obtain an alternative, yet equivalent, way to determine generalized wave front sets, which is analogous to the original definition of the wave front set of distributions via intersections over characteristic sets. The new methods are then applied to regularity theory of generalized solutions of (pseudo-)differential equations, where we extend the general noncharacteristic re…
In the first part of the paper the authors study the minimal and maximal extension of a class of weighted pseudodifferential operators in the Fréchet space $L^p_{\rm loc}(Ω)$. In the second one non homogeneous microlocal properties are introduced and propagation of Sobolev singularities for solutions to (pseudo)differential equations is given. For both the arguments actual examples are provided.
Using a standard linearization technique and previously obtained microlocal properties for pseudodifferential operators with smooth coefficients, the authors state results of microlocal regularity in generalized Besov spaces for solutions to non linear PDE.
We discuss unique existence and microlocal regularity properties of Sobolev space solutions to the fractional Eringen wave equation, initially given in the form of a system of equations in which the classical non-local Eringen constitutive equation is generalized by employing space-fractional derivatives. Numerical examples illustrate the shape of solutions in dependence of the order of the space-fractional derivative.
We look at the long-time behaviour of solutions to a semi-classical Schrödinger equation on the torus. We consider time scales which go to infinity when the semi-classical parameter goes to zero and we associate with each time-scale the set of semi-classical measures associated with all possible choices of initial data. On each classical invariant torus, the structure of semi-classical measures is described in terms of two-microlocal measures, obeying explicit propagation laws. We apply this construction in two directions. We first analyse the regularity of semi-classical measures, and we emph…
We propose a geometric approach to construct the Cauchy evolution operator for the Lorentzian Dirac operator on Cauchy-compact globally hyperbolic 4-manifolds. We realise the Cauchy evolution operator as the sum of two invariantly defined oscillatory integrals -- the positive and negative Dirac propagators -- global in space and in time, with distinguished complex-valued geometric phase functions. As applications, we relate the Cauchy evolution operators with the Feynman propagator and construct Cauchy surfaces covariances of quasifree Hadamard states.
This is a introductory course focusing some basic notions in pseudodifferential operators ($Ψ$DOs) and microlocal analysis. We start this lecture notes with some notations and necessary preliminaries. Then the notion of symbols and $Ψ$DOs are introduced. In Chapter 3 we define the oscillatory integrals of different types. Chapter 4 is devoted to the stationary phase lemmas. One of the features of the lecture is that the stationary phase lemmas are proved for not only compactly supported functions but also for more general functions with certain order of smoothness and certain order of growth a…
Let $M$ be a scattering manifold, i.e., a Riemannian manifold with asymptotically conic structure, and let $H$ be a Schrödinger operator on $M$. We can construct a natural time-dependent scattering theory for $H$ with a suitable reference system, and the scattering matrix is defined accordingly. We here show the scattering matrices are Fourier integral operators associated to a canonical transform on the boundary manifold generated by the geodesic flow. In particular, we learn that the wave front sets are mapped according to the canonical transform. These results are generalizations of a theor…
In a previous paper by the second author, we discussed a characterization of the microlocal singularities for solutions to Schrödinger equations with long range type perturbations, using solutions to a Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In this paper we show that we may use Dollard type approximate solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation if the perturbation satisfies somewhat stronger conditions. As applications, we describe the propagation of microlocal singularities for $e^{itH_0}e^{-itH}$ when the potential is asymptotically homogeneous as $|x|\to\infty$, where $H$ is our Schrödinger operator, and…
This paper concerns the random source problems for the time-harmonic acoustic and elastic wave equations in two and three dimensions. The goal is to determine the compactly supported external force from the radiated wave field measured in a domain away from the source region. The source is assumed to be a microlocally isotropic generalized Gaussian random function such that its covariance operator is a classical pseudo-differential operator. Given such a distributional source, the direct problem is shown to have a unique solution by using an integral equation approach and the Sobolev embedding…
In this article, we shall construct the resolvent of Laplacian at high energies near the spectrum on non-product conic manifolds with a single cone tip. Microlocally, the resolvent kernel is the sum of b-pseudodifferential operators, scattering pseudodifferential operators and intersecting Legendrian distributions. As an application, we shall establish Strichartz estimates for Schrödinger equations on non-compact manifolds with multiple non-product conic singularities.
Consider the inverse random source scattering problem for the two-dimensional time-harmonic elastic wave equation with an inhomogeneous, anisotropic mass density. The source is modeled as a microlocally isotropic generalized Gaussian random function whose covariance operator is a classical pseudo-differential operator. The goal is to recover the principle symbol of the covariance operator from the displacement measured in a domain away from the source. For such a distributional source, we show that the direct problem has a unique solution by introducing an equivalent Lippmann--Schwinger integr…
This paper is concerned with an inverse scattering problem for the time-harmonic elastic wave equation with a random potential. Interpreted as a distribution, the potential is assumed to be a microlocally isotropic generalized Gaussian random field with the covariance operator being described by a classical pseudo-differential operator. The goal is to determine the principal symbol of the covariance operator from the scattered wave measured in a bounded domain which has a positive distance from the domain of the potential. For such a rough potential, the well-posedness of the direct scattering…
This article addresses linear hyperbolic partial differential equations and pseudodifferential equations with strongly singular coefficients and data, modelled as members of algebras of generalised functions. We employ the recently developed theory of generalised Fourier integral operators to construct parametrices for the solutions and to describe propagation of singularities in this setting. As required tools, the construction of generalised solutions to eikonal and transport equations is given and results on the microlocal regularity of the kernels of generalised Fourier integral operators …
We first establish the presence of a diffractive front in the fundamental solution of the wave operator with a diract delta intial condition in two dimensional euclidean space caused by the potentials perturbation on the spherical laplacian. This motivates a result which restricts the propagation of singularities for the wave operator with a more general potential to precisely these diffractive fronts higher dimensional euclidean spaces. This is proven using microlocal energy estimates.
We prove a microlocal smoothing effect of Schrödinger equations on manifolds. We employ radially homogeneous wavefront sets introduced by Ito and Nakamura (Amer. J. Math., 2009). In terms of radially homogeneous wavefront sets, we can apply our theory to both of asymptotically conical and hyperbolic manifolds. We relate wavefront sets in initial states to radially homogeneous wavefront sets in states after a time development. We also prove a relation between radially homogeneous wavefront sets and homogeneous wavefront sets and prove a special case of Nakamura (2005).
We consider the Cauchy problem and the source problem for normally hyperbolic operators on the Minkowski spacetime, and study the determination of solutions from their integrals along null geodesics. For the Cauchy problem, we give a new proof of the stable determination result obtained in Vasy and Wang [12]. For the source problem, we obtain stable determination for sources with space-like singularities. Our proof is based on the microlocal analysis of the normal operator of the light ray transform composed with the parametrix for strictly hyperbolic operators.
In this paper we study microlocal singularities of solutions to Schrodinger equations on scattering manifolds, i.e., noncompact Riemannian manifolds with asymptotically conic ends. We characterize the wave front set of the solutions in terms of the initial condition and the classical scattering maps under the nontrapping condition. Our result is closely related to a recent work by Hassell and Wunsch, though our model is more general and the method, which relies heavily on scattering theoretical ideas, is simple and quite different. In particular, we use Egorov-type argument in the standard pse…
In this note we consider the nonlinear heat equation associated to the fractional Hermite operator $H^β=(-Δ+|x|^2)^β$, $0<β\leq 1$. We show the local solvability of the related Cauchy problem in the framework of modulation spaces. The result is obtained by combining tools from microlocal and time-frequency analysis. As a byproduct, we compute the Gabor matrix of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the Hörmander class $S^m_{0,0}$, $m\in\mathcal{R}$.
We analyse stability of observability estimates for solutions to wave and Scr\" odinger equations subjected to additive perturbations. The paper generalises the recent averaged observability/control result by allowing for systems consisting of operators of different types. The method also applies to the simultaneous observability problem by which one tries to estimate the energy of each component of a system under consideration. The analysis relies on microlocal defect tools; in particular on standard H-measures, when the main dynamic of the system is governed by the wave operator, while parab…
The paper addresses questions of existence and regularity of solutions to linear partial differential equations whose coefficients are generalized functions or generalized constants in the sense of Colombeau. We introduce various new notions of ellipticity and hypoellipticity, study their interrelation, and give a number of new examples and counterexamples. Using the concept of $\G^\infty$-regularity of generalized functions, we derive a general global regularity result in the case of operators with constant generalized coefficients, a more specialized result for second order operators, and a …
In this paper, we study a system of thermoelasticity with a degenerated second order operator in the Heat equation. We analyze the evolution of the energy density of a family of solutions. We consider two cases: when the set of points where the ellipticity of the Heat operator fails is included in a hypersurface and when it is an open set. In the first case and under special assumptions, we prove that the evolution of the energy density is the one of a damped wave equation: propagation along the rays of geometric optic and damping according to a microlocal process. In the second case, we show …
This paper is concerned with an inverse source problem for the stochastic biharmonic operator wave equation. The driven source is assumed to be a microlocally isotropic Gaussian random field with its covariance operator being a classical pseudo-differential operator. The well-posedness of the direct problem is examined in the distribution sense and the regularity of the solution is discussed for the given rough source. For the inverse problem, the strength of the random source, involved in the principal symbol of its covariance operator, is shown to be uniquely determined by a single realizati…
In this note we investigate local properties for microlocally symmetrizable hyperbolic systems with just time dependent coefficients. Thanks to Paley-Wiener theorem, we establish finite propagation speed by showing precise estimates on the evolution of the support of the solution in terms of suitable norms of the coefficients of the operator and of the symmetrizer. From this result, local existence and uniqueness follow by quite standard methods. Our argument relies on the use of Fourier transform, and it cannot be extended to operators whose coefficients depend also on the space variables. On…
This paper is a survey article of results and arguments from several of authors' papers, and it describes a new approach to global smoothing problems for dispersive and non-dispersive evolution equations based on ideas of comparison principle and canonical transforms. For operators $a(D_x)$ of order $m$ satisfying the dispersiveness condition $\nabla a(ξ)\neq0$, a range of smoothing estimates is established. Especially, time-global smoothing estimates for the operator $a(D_x)$ with lower order terms are the benefit of our new method. These estimates are known to fail for general non-dispersive…
We analyse the structure of semiclassical and microlocal Wigner measures for solutions to the linear Schrödinger equation on the disk, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our approach links the propagation of singularities beyond geometric optics with the completely integrable nature of the billiard in the disk. We prove a "structure theorem", expressing the restriction of the Wigner measures on each invariant torus in terms of {\em second-microlocal measures}. They are obtained by performing a finer localization in phase space around each of these tori, at the limit of the uncertainty princip…
Elegant 'microlocal' methods have long since been extensively developed for the analysis of conventional Schroedinger eigenvalue problems. For technical reasons though these methods have not heretofore been applicable to quantum field theories. In this article however we initiate a 'Euclidean signature semi-classical' program to extend the scope of these analytical techniques to encompass the study of self-interacting scalar fields in 1 + 1, 2 + 1 and 3 + 1 dimensions. The basic microlocal approach entails, first of all, the solution of a single, nonlinear equation of Hamilton-Jacobi type foll…
We consider a damped plate equation on an open bounded subset of R^d, or a smooth manifold, with boundary, along with general boundary operators fulfilling the Lopatinskii-Sapiro condition. The damping term acts on a region without imposing a geometrical condition. We derive a resolvent estimate for the generator of the damped plate semigroup that yields a logarithmic decay of the energy of the solution to the plate equation. The resolvent estimate is a consequence of a Carleman inequality obtained for the bi-Laplace operator involving a spectral parameter under the considered boundary conditi…
We establish global hypoelliptic estimates for linear Landau-type operators. Linear Landau-type equations are a class of inhomogeneous kinetic equations with anisotropic diffusion whose study is motivated by the linearization of the Landau equation near the Maxwellian distribution. By introducing a microlocal method by multiplier which can be adapted to various hypoelliptic kinetic equations, we establish for linear Landau-type operators optimal global hypoelliptic estimates with loss of 4/3 derivatives in a Sobolev scale which is exactly related to the anisotropy of the diffusion.
This paper addresses the direct and inverse source problems for the stochastic acoustic, biharmonic, electromagnetic, and elastic wave equations in a unified framework. The driven source is assumed to be a centered generalized microlocally isotropic Gaussian random field, whose covariance and relation operators are classical pseudo-differential operators. Given the random source, the direct problems are shown to be well-posed in the sense of distributions and the regularity of the solutions are given. For the inverse problems, we demonstrate by ergodicity that the principal symbols of the cova…
The paper describes a new approach to global smoothing problems for dispersive and non-dispersive evolution equations based on the global canonical transforms and the underlying global microlocal analysis. For this purpose, the Egorov-type theorem is established with canonical transformations in the form of a class of Fourier integral operators, and their weighted L2-boundedness properties are derived. This allows us to globally reduce general dispersive equations to normal forms in one or two dimensions. Then, several comparison principles are introduced to relate different smoothing estimate…
In this note, we consider the wave operator $\square_g$ in the case of globally hyperbolic, compactly supported perturbations of static spacetimes. We give an elementary proof of the essential self-adjointness of $\square_g$ and of uniform microlocal estimates for the resolvent in this setting. This provides a model for studying Lorentzian spectral zeta functions which is particularly simple, yet sufficiently general for locally deriving Einstein equations from a spectral Lagrangian.
These lectures present the analysis of stability and control of long time behavior of PDE models described by nonlinear evolutions of hyperbolic type. Specific examples of the models under consideration include: (i) nonlinear systems of dynamic elasticity: von Karman systems, Berger's equations, Kirchhoff - Boussinesq equations, nonlinear waves (ii) nonlinear flow - structure and fluid - structure interactions, (iii) and nonlinear thermo-elasticity. A characteristic feature of the models under consideration is criticality or super-criticality of sources (with respect to Sobolev's embeddings) a…
