We establish global hypoelliptic estimates for linear Landau-type operators. Linear Landau-type equations are a class of inhomogeneous kinetic equations with anisotropic diffusion whose study is motivated by the linearization of the Landau equation near the Maxwellian distribution. By introducing a microlocal method by multiplier which can be adapted to various hypoelliptic kinetic equations, we establish for linear Landau-type operators optimal global hypoelliptic estimates with loss of 4/3 derivatives in a Sobolev scale which is exactly related to the anisotropy of the diffusion.
We study in this paper the global hypoellipticity property in the Gevrey category for the generalized twisted Laplacian on forms. Different from the 0-form case, where the twisted Laplacian is a scalar operator, this is a system of differential operators when acting on forms, each component operator being elliptic locally and degenerate globally. We obtain here the global hypoellipticity in anisotropic Gevrey space.
A class of inverse problems for restoring the right-hand side of a parabolic equation for a large class of positive operators with discrete spectrum is considered. The results on existence and uniqueness of solutions of these problems as well as on the fractional time diffusion (subdiffusion) equations are presented. Consequently, the obtained results are applied for the similar inverse problems for a large class of subelliptic diffusion and subdiffusion equations (with continuous spectrum). Such problems are modelled by using general homogeneous left-invariant hypoelliptic operators on genera…
We study the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equations with hard potential in the perturbation setting, and establish the analytic smoothing effect in both spatial and velocity variables for a class of low-regularity weak solutions. This shows the Landau equations behave essentially as the hypoelliptic Fokker-Planck operators. The spatial analyticity relies on a new time-average operator, and the proof is based on a straightforward energy estimate with a careful estimate on the derivatives with respect to the new time-average operator.
In this paper, we study the Landau equation under the Navier-Stokes scaling in the torus for hard and moderately soft potentials. More precisely, we investigate the Cauchy theory in a perturbative framework and establish some new short time regularization estimates for our rescaled nonlinear Landau equation. These estimates are quantified in time and optimal, indeed, we obtain the instantaneous expected anisotropic gain of regularity (see [53] for the corresponding hypoelliptic estimates on the linearized Landau collision operator). Moreover, the estimates giving the gain of regularity in the …
The anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau system \[ Δu+δ\, \nabla (\mathrm{div}\: u) +δ\, \mathrm{curl}^*(\mathrm{curl}\: u)=(|u|^2-1) u, \] for $u\colon\mathbb R^2\to\mathbb R^2$ and $δ\in (-1,1)$, models the formation of vortices in liquid crystals. We prove the existence of entire solutions such that $|u(x)|\to 1$ and $u$ has a prescribed topological degree $d\leq -1$ as $|x|\to\infty$, for small values of the anisotropy parameter $|δ| < δ_0(d)$. Unlike the isotropic case $δ=0$, this cannot be reduced to a one-dimensional radial equation. We obtain these solutions by minimizing the anisotropic Ginzbu…
The anisotropic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (ACGLE) describes slow modulations of patterns in anisotropic spatially extended systems near oscillatory (Hopf) instabilities with zero wavenumbers. Traveling wave solutions to the ACGLE become unstable near Benjamin-Feir-Newell instabilities. We determine two instability conditions in parameter space and study codimension-one (-two) bifurcations that occur if one (two) of the conditions is (are) met. We derive anisotropic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky-type equations that govern the phase of the complex solutions to the ACGLE and generate solutions to t…
We report on recent results and a new line of research at the crossroad of two major theories in the analysis of partial differential equations. The celebrated De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory shows H{ö}lder estimates and the Harnack inequality for uniformly elliptic or parabolic equations with rough coefficients in divergence form. The theory of hypoellipticity of H{ö}rmander shows, under general "bracket" conditions, the regularity of solutions to partial differential equations combining first and second order derivative operators when ellipticity fails in some directions. We discuss recent exten…
We extend the De Giorgi--Nash--Moser theory to a class of kinetic Fokker-Planck equations and deduce new results on the Landau-Coulomb equation. More precisely, we first study the H{ö}lder regularity and establish a Harnack inequality for solutions to a general linear equation of Fokker-Planck type whose coefficients are merely measurable and essentially bounded, i.e. assuming no regularity on the coefficients in order to later derive results for non-linear problems. This general equation has the formal structure of the hypoelliptic equations "of type II" , sometimes also called ultraparabolic…
We study the linear stability of entire radial solutions $u(re^{iθ})=f(r)e^{iθ}$, with positive increasing profile $f(r)$, to the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau equation \[ -Δu -δ(\partial_x+i\partial_y)^2\bar u =(1-|u|^2)u,\quad -1<δ<1, \] which arises in various liquid crystal models. In the isotropic case $δ=0$, Mironescu showed that such solution is nondegenerately stable. We prove stability of this radial solution in the range $δ\in (δ_1,0]$ for some $-1<δ_1<0$, and instability outside this range. In strong contrast with the isotropic case, stability with respect to higher Fourier modes is \…
The Ginzburg-Landau functional is a phase transition model which is suitable for clustering or classification type problems. We study the asymptotics of a sequence of Ginzburg-Landau functionals with anisotropic interaction potentials on point clouds $Ψ_n$ where $n$ denotes the number data points. In particular we show the limiting problem, in the sense of $Γ$-convergence, is related to the total variation norm restricted to functions taking binary values; which can be understood as a surface energy. We generalize the result known for isotropic interaction potentials to the anisotropic case an…
The aim of the work is to provide a stable method to get sharp bounds for Boltzmann and Landau operators in weighted Sobolev spaces and in anisotropic spaces. All the sharp bounds are given for the original Boltzmann and Landau operators. The sharpness means the lower and upper bounds for the operators are consistent with the behavior of the linearized operators. Moreover, we make clear the difference between the bounds for the original operators and those for the linearized ones. According to the Bobylev's formula, we introduce two types of dyadic decompositions performed in both phase and fr…
In this paper we study a gradient flow generated by the Landau-de Gennes free energy that describes nematic liquid crystal configurations in the space of $Q$-tensors. This free energy density functional is composed of three quadratic terms as the elastic energy density part, and a singular potential in the bulk part that is considered as a natural enforcement of a physical constraint on the eigenvalues of $Q$. The system is a non-diagonal parabolic system with a singular potential which trends to infinity logarithmically when the eigenvalues of $Q$ approaches the physical boundary. We give a r…
We carry out an asymptotic analysis of a thin nematic liquid crystal in which one elastic constant dominates over the others, namely \begin{align} \label{energyab} \inf E_\varepsilon(u)\quad\mbox{where}\quad E_\varepsilon(u) := \frac{1}{2}\int_Ω\left\{\varepsilon\,|\nabla u|^2 + \frac{1}{\varepsilon} \,(|u|^2 - 1)^2 + L \,(\mathrm{div}\,u)^2\right\} \,dx. \end{align} Here $u: Ω\to \mathbb R^2$ is a vector field, $0 < \varepsilon \ll 1 $ is a small parameter, and $L > 0$ is a fixed constant, independent of $\varepsilon$. We derive the $Γ$-limit $E_0$, which is a sum of a bulk term penalizing di…
We establish existence of finite energy weak solutions to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation and the linearized Landau equation near Maxwellian, in the presence of specular reflection boundary condition for general domains. Moreover, by using a method of reflection and the $S_p$ estimate previously established by the first and the last author, we prove regularity in the kinetic Sobolev spaces $S_p$ and anisotropic Hölder spaces for such weak solutions. Such $S_p$ regularity leads to the uniqueness of weak solutions.
We study uniaxial solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations for a Landau-de Gennes free energy for nematic liquid crystals, with a fourth order bulk potential, with and without elastic anisotropy. In the elastic isotropic case, we show that (i) all uniaxial solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations, with a director field of certain symmetry, necessarily have the radial-hedgehog structure modulo an orthogonal transformation, (ii) the "escape into third dimension" director cannot correspond to a purely uniaxial solution of the Landau-de Gennes Euler-Lagrange equations and we do not use artificia…
The consistency of a nonlocal anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau type functional for data classification and clustering is studied. The Ginzburg-Landau objective functional combines a double well potential, that favours indicator valued function, and the $p$-Laplacian, that enforces regularity. Under appropriate scaling between the two terms minimisers exhibit a phase transition on the order of $ε=ε_n$ where $n$ is the number of data points. We study the large data asymptotics, i.e. as $n\to \infty$, in the regime where $ε_n\to 0$. The mathematical tool used to address this question is $Γ$-convergenc…
We give a survey on some recent results concerning the Landau-Lifshitz equation, a fundamental nonlinear PDE with a strong geometric content, describing the dynamics of the magnetization in ferromagnetic materials. We revisit the Cauchy problem for the anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz equation, without dissipation, for smooth solutions, and also in the energy space in dimension one. We also examine two approximations of the Landau-Lifshitz equation given by of the Sine-Gordon equation and cubic Schrödinger equations, arising in certain singular limits of strong easy-plane and easy-axis anisotropy, …
We study the well-posedness of the vector-field Peierls-Nabarro model for curved dislocations with a double well potential and a bi-states limit at far field. Using the Dirichlet to Neumann map, the 3D Peierls-Nabarro model is reduced to a nonlocal scalar Ginzburg-Landau equation. We derive an integral formulation of the nonlocal operator, whose kernel is anisotropic and positive when Poisson's ratio $ν\in(-\frac12, \frac13)$. We then prove that any bounded stable solutions to this nonlocal scalar Ginzburg-Landau equation has a 1D profile, which corresponds to the PDE version of flatness resul…
In this paper, we study a phenomenological model for pattern formation in electroconvection, and the effect of noise on the pattern. As such model we consider an anisotropic Swift-Hohenberg equation adding an additive noise. We prove the existence of a global solution of that equation on the two dimensional torus. In addition, inserting a scaling parameter, we consider the equation on a large domain near its change of stability. We observe numerically that, under the appropriate scaling, its solutions can be approximated by a periodic wave, which is modulated by the solutions to a stochastic G…
