We extend the De Giorgi--Nash--Moser theory to a class of kinetic Fokker-Planck equations and deduce new results on the Landau-Coulomb equation. More precisely, we first study the H{ö}lder regularity and establish a Harnack inequality for solutions to a general linear equation of Fokker-Planck type whose coefficients are merely measurable and essentially bounded, i.e. assuming no regularity on the coefficients in order to later derive results for non-linear problems. This general equation has the formal structure of the hypoelliptic equations "of type II" , sometimes also called ultraparabolic equations of Kolmogorov type, but with rough coefficients: it combines a first-order skew-symmetric operator with a second-order elliptic operator involving derivatives along only part of the coordinates and with rough coefficients. These general results are then applied to the non-negative essentially bounded weak solutions of the Landau equation with inverse-power law $γ$ $\in$ [--d, 1] whose mass, energy and entropy density are bounded and mass is bounded away from 0, and we deduce the H{ö}lder regularity of these solutions.
We prove invariant Harnack inequalities for certain classes of non-divergence form equations of Kolmogorov type. The operators we consider exhibit invariance properties with respect to a homogeneous Lie group structure. The coefficient matrix is assumed either to satisfy a Cordes-Landis condition on the eigenvalues, or to admit a uniform modulus of continuity.
This article deals with kinetic Fokker-Planck equations with essentially bounded coefficients. A weak Harnack inequality for non-negative super-solutions is derived by considering their Log-transform and following S. N. Kruzhkov (1963). Such a result rests on a new weak Poincar{é} inequality sharing similarities with the one introduced by W. Wang and L. Zhang in a series of works about ultraparabolic equations (2009, 2011, 2017). This functional inequality is combined with a classical covering argument recently adapted by L. Silvestre and the second author (2020) to kinetic equations.
We consider a class of second order degenerate kinetic operators $\mathscr{L}$ in the framework of special relativity. We first describe $\mathscr{L}$ as an Hörmander operator which is invariant with respect to Lorentz transformations. Then we prove a Lorentz-invariant Harnack type inequality, and we derive accurate asymptotic lower bounds for positive solutions to $\mathscr{L} f = 0$. As a consequence we obtain a lower bound for the density of the relativistic stochastic process associated to $\mathscr{L}$.
We consider weak solutions of degenerate second order partial differential equations of Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck type with measurable coefficients in divergence form. We give a geometric statement of the Harnack inequality recently proven by Golse, Imbert, Mouhot and Vasseur. As a corollary we obtain a strong maximum principle.
We consider nonlinear Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck type equations of the form \begin{equation}\label{abeqn} (\partial_t+X\cdot\nabla_Y)u=\nabla_X\cdot(A(\nabla_X u,X,Y,t)). \end{equation} The function $A=A(ξ,X,Y,t):\R^m\times\R^m\times\R^m\times\R\to\R^m$ is assumed to be continuous with respect to $ξ$, and measurable with respect to $X,Y$ and $t$. $A=A(ξ,X,Y,t)$ is allowed to be nonlinear but with linear growth. We establish higher integrability and local boundedness of weak sub-solutions, weak Harnack and Harnack inequalities, and H{ö}lder continuity with quantitative estimates. In addition we e…
We prove a Harnack inequality for positive solutions of a parabolic equation with slow anisotropic spatial diffusion. After identifying its natural scalings, we reduce the problem to a Fokker-Planck equation and construct a self-similar Barenblatt solution. We exploit translation invariance to obtain positivity near the origin via a self-iteration method and deduce a sharp anisotropic expansion of positivity. This eventually yields a scale invariant Harnack inequality in an anisotropic geometry dictated by the speed of the diffusion coefficients. As a corollary, we infer Hölder continuity, an …
We continue to study regularity results for weak solutions of the large class of second order degenerate quasilinear equations of the form \begin{eqnarray} \text{div}\big(A(x,u,\nabla u)\big) = B(x,u,\nabla u)\text{ for }x\inΩ\nonumber \end{eqnarray} as considered in our previous paper giving local boundedness of weak solutions. Here we derive a version of Harnack's inequality as well as local Hölder continuity for weak solutions. The possible degeneracy of an equation in the class is expressed in terms of a nonnegative definite quadratic form associated with its principal part. No smoothness …
We consider hypoelliptic equations of kinetic Fokker-Planck type, also known as Kolmogorov or ultraparabolic equations, with rough coefficients in the drift-diffusion operator. We give novel short quantitative proofs of the De Giorgi intermediate-value Lemma as well as weak Harnack and Harnack inequalities. This implies H{ö}lder continuity with quantitative estimates. The paper is self-contained.
We obtain a new general extension theorem in Banach spaces for operators which are not required to be symmetric, and apply it to obtain Harnack estimates and a priori regularity for solutions of fractional powers of several second order differential operators. These include weighted elliptic and subellitptic operators in divergence form (nonnecessarily self-adjoint), and nondivergence form operators with rough coefficients. We utilize the reflection extension technique introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre.
This work is devoted to the study of the obstacle problem associated to the Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck operator with rough coefficients through a variational approach. In particular, after the introduction of a proper anisotropic Sobolev space and related properties, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution for the obstacle problem by adapting a classical perturbation argument to the convex functional associated to the case of our interest. Finally, we conclude this work by providing a one-sided associated variational inequality, alongside with an overview on related open problem…
We present a general approach to obtain a weak Harnack inequality for rough hypoellipitic equations, e.g. kinetic equations. The proof is constructive and does not study the commutator structure but rather compares the rough solution with a smooth problem for which the estimates are assumed.
We prove that the elliptic Harnack inequality (on a manifold, graph, or suitably regular metric measure space) is stable under bounded perturbations, as well as rough isometries.
We consider classical solutions to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation on a bounded domain $\mathcal O \subset~\mathbb{R}^d$ in position, and we obtain a probabilistic representation of the solutions using the Langevin diffusion process with absorbing boundary conditions on the boundary of the phase-space cylindrical domain $D = \mathcal O \times \mathbb{R}^d$. Furthermore, a Harnack inequality, as well as a maximum principle, is provided on $D$ for solutions to this kinetic Fokker-Planck equation, together with the existence of a smooth transition density for the associated absorbed Langevin p…
We establish the existence and uniqueness, in bounded as well as unbounded Lipschitz type cylinders of the forms $U_X\times V_{Y,t}$ and $Ω\times \mathbb R^{m}\times \mathbb R$, of weak solutions to Cauchy-Dirichlet problems for the strongly degenerate parabolic operator \[ \mathcal{L}:= \nabla_X\cdot(A(X,Y,t)\nabla_X)+X\cdot\nabla_Y-\partial_t, \] assuming that $A=A(X,Y,t)=\{a_{i,j}(X,Y,t)\}$ is a real $m\times m$-matrix valued, measurable function such that $A(X,Y,t)$ is symmetric, bounded and uniformly elliptic. Subsequently we solve the continuous Dirichlet problem and establish the repres…
We obtain local Holder continuity estimates up to the boundary for a kinetic Fokker-Planck equation with rough coefficients, with the prescribed influx boundary condition. Our result extends some recent developments that incorporate De Giorgi methods to kinetic Fokker-Planck equations. We also obtain higher order asymptotic estimates near the incoming part of the boundary. In particular, when the equation has a zero boundary conditions and no source term, we prove that the solution vanishes at infinite order on the incoming part of the boundary.
We consider a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation driven by a deterministic rough path which describes the conditional probability of a McKean-Vlasov diffusion with "common" noise. To study the equation we build a self-contained framework of non-linear rough integration theory which we use to study McKean-Vlasov equations perturbed by rough paths. We construct an appropriate notion of solution of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation and prove well-posedness.

We consider rough metrics on smooth manifolds and corresponding Laplacians induced by such metrics. We demonstrate that globally continuous heat kernels exist and are Hölder continuous locally in space and time. This is done via local parabolic Harnack estimates for weak solutions of operators in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients in weighted Sobolev spaces.
We present sharp conditions on divergence-free drifts in Lebesgue spaces for the passive scalar advection-diffusion equation \[ \partial_t θ- Δθ+ b \cdot \nabla θ= 0 \] to satisfy local boundedness, a single-scale Harnack inequality, and upper bounds on fundamental solutions. We demonstrate these properties for drifts $b$ belonging to $L^q_t L^p_x$, where $\frac{2}{q} + \frac{n}{p} < 2$, or $L^p_x L^q_t$, where $\frac{3}{q} + \frac{n-1}{p} < 2$. For steady drifts, the condition reduces to $b \in L^{\frac{n-1}{2}+}$. The space $L^1_t L^\infty_x$ of drifts with `bounded total speed' is a borderl…
This paper is dedicated to the application of the DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser regularity theory to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation. This equation is hypoelliptic. It is parabolic only in the velocity variable, while the Liouville transport operator has a mixing effect in the position/velocity phase space. The mixing effect is incorporated in the classical DeGiorgi method via the averaging lemmas. The result can be seen as a Hölder regularity version of the classical averaging lemmas.
We report on recent results and a new line of research at the crossroad of two major theories in the analysis of partial differential equations. The celebrated De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory shows H{ö}lder estimates and the Harnack inequality for uniformly elliptic or parabolic equations with rough coefficients in divergence form. The theory of hypoellipticity of H{ö}rmander shows, under general "bracket" conditions, the regularity of solutions to partial differential equations combining first and second order derivative operators when ellipticity fails in some directions. We discuss recent exten…
We prove local boundedness, Harnack's inequality and local regularity for weak solutions of quasilinear degenerate elliptic equations in divergence form with Rough coefficients. Degeneracy is encoded by a non-negative, symmetric, measurable matrix valued function Q(x) and two suitable non-negative weight functions. We setup an axiomatic approach in terms of suitable geometric conditions and local Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities. Data integrability is close to L1 and is exploited in terms of a suitable Stummel-Kato class that in some cases is necessary for local regularity.
The aim of the present paper is twofold:(1) We carry on with developing an abstract method for deriving decay estimates on the semigroup associated to non-symmetric operators in Banach spaces as introduced in [10]. We extend the method so as to consider the shrinkage of the functional space. Roughly speaking, we consider a class of operators writing as a dissipative part plus a mild perturbation, and we prove that if the associated semigroup satisfies a decay estimate in some reference space then it satisfies the same decay estimate in another-smaller or larger-Banach space under the condition…
In this paper we develop a potential theory for strongly degenerate parabolic operators of the form \[ \mathcal{L}:=\nabla_X\cdot(A(X,Y,t)\nabla_X)+X\cdot\nabla_{Y}-\partial_t, \] in unbounded domains of the form \[ Ω=\{(X,Y,t)=(x,x_{m},y,y_{m},t)\in\mathbb R^{m-1}\times\mathbb R\times\mathbb R^{m-1}\times\mathbb R\times\mathbb R\mid x_m>ψ(x,y,y_m,t)\}, \] where $ψ$ is assumed to satisfy a uniform Lipschitz condition adapted to the dilation structure and the (non-Euclidean) Lie group underlying the operator $\mathcal{L}$. Concerning $A=A(X,Y,t)$ we assume that $A$ is bounded, measurable, symme…
We study some jumping SDE and the corresponding Fokker-Planck (or Kolmogorov forward) equation, which is a non-local PDE. We assume only some measurability and growth conditions on the coefficients. We prove that for any weak solution $(f_t)_{t\in [0,T]}$ of the PDE, there exists a weak solution to the SDE of which the time marginals are given by $(f_t)_{t\in[0,T]}$. As a corollary, we deduce that for any given initial condition, existence for the PDE is equivalent to weak existence for the SDE and uniqueness in law for the SDE implies uniqueness for the PDE. This extends some ideas of Figalli…
In this paper we study the following stochastic Hamiltonian system in ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$ (a second order stochastic differential equation), $$ d \dot X_t=b(X_t,\dot X_t)d t+σ(X_t,\dot X_t)d W_t,\ \ (X_0,\dot X_0)=(x,v)\in{\mathbb R}^{2d}, $$ where $b(x,v):{\mathbb R}^{2d}\to{\mathbb R}^d$ and $σ(x,v):{\mathbb R}^{2d}\to{\mathbb R}^d\otimes{\mathbb R}^d$ are two Borel measurable functions. We show that if $σ$ is bounded and uniformly non-degenerate, and $b\in H^{2/3,0}_p$ and $\nablaσ\in L^p$ for some $p>2(2d+1)$, where $H^{α,β}_p$ is the Bessel potential space with differentiability indices $α…
