We are interested in the inhomogeneous Landau equation which describes the evolution of a particle density f = f (t, x, v) representing at time t $\ge$ 0, the density of particles at position x $\in$ R 3 and velocity v $\in$ R 3. The study is motivated by the linearization of the Landau equation near Maxwellian distribution. In this article, we establish hypoelliptic estimates, a localization of the spectrum and estimates of the resolvent of the linear Landau operator with hard potentials and Maxwellian molecules. The proof is based on a multiplier method and requires fine pseudo-differential calculus tools.
We establish global hypoelliptic estimates for linear Landau-type operators. Linear Landau-type equations are a class of inhomogeneous kinetic equations with anisotropic diffusion whose study is motivated by the linearization of the Landau equation near the Maxwellian distribution. By introducing a microlocal method by multiplier which can be adapted to various hypoelliptic kinetic equations, we establish for linear Landau-type operators optimal global hypoelliptic estimates with loss of 4/3 derivatives in a Sobolev scale which is exactly related to the anisotropy of the diffusion.
We consider the linearized Landau operator for which we provide simple proofs of hypoellipticity, and in particular we recover the recent results of H\' erau and Pravda-Starov \cite{herau-all}. Our arguments are elementary and in particular avoids any use of pseudo-differential calculus.
In this article we provide global subelliptic estimates for the linearized inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff, and show that some global gain in the spatial direction is available although the corresponding operator is not elliptic in this direction. The proof is based on a multiplier method and the so-called Wick quantization, together with a careful analysis of the symbolic properties of the Weyl symbol of the Boltzmann collision operator.
In many works, the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator is considered to behave essentially as a fractional Laplacian. In the present work, we prove that the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator with Maxwellian molecules is exactly equal to a fractional power of the linearized Landau operator which is the sum of the harmonic oscillator and the spherical Laplacian. This result allows to display explicit sharp coercive estimates satisfied by the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator for both Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian molecules.
We study the Landau equation for a mixture of two species in the whole space, with initial condition of one species near a vacuum and the other near a Maxwellian equilibrium state. For the linearized level, without any smoothness assumption on the initial data, it is shown that the solution becomes smooth instantaneously in both the space and momentum variables. Moreover, the large time behavior of the solution is also obtained.
We study the pointwise (in the space and time variables) behavior of the linearized Landau equation for hard and moderately soft potentials. The solution has very clear description in the $(x,t)-$variables, including large time behavior and asymptotic behavior. More precisely, we obtain the pointwise fluid structure inside finite Mach number region, and exponential or sub-exponential decay, depending on interactions between particles, in the space variable outside finite Mach number region. The spectrum analysis, regularization effect and refined weighted energy estimate play important roles i…
This paper deals with explicit spectral gap estimates for the linearized Boltzmann operator with hard potentials (and hard spheres). We prove that it can be reduced to the Maxwellian case, for which explicit estimates are already known. Such a method is constructive, does not rely on Weyl's Theorem and thus does not require Grad's splitting. The more physical idea of the proof is to use geometrical properties of the whole collision operator. In a second part, we use the fact that the Landau operator can be expressed as the limit of the Boltzmann operator as collisions become grazing in order t…
We prove explicit coercivity estimates for the linearized Boltzmann and Landau operators, for a general class of interactions including any inverse-power law interactions, and hard spheres. The functional spaces of these coercivity estimates depend on the collision kernel of these operators. They cover the spectral gap estimates for the linearized Boltzmann operator with Maxwell molecules, improve these estimates for hard potentials, and are the first explicit coercivity estimates for soft potentials (including in particular the case of Coulombian interactions). We also prove a regularity prop…
A class of inverse problems for restoring the right-hand side of a parabolic equation for a large class of positive operators with discrete spectrum is considered. The results on existence and uniqueness of solutions of these problems as well as on the fractional time diffusion (subdiffusion) equations are presented. Consequently, the obtained results are applied for the similar inverse problems for a large class of subelliptic diffusion and subdiffusion equations (with continuous spectrum). Such problems are modelled by using general homogeneous left-invariant hypoelliptic operators on genera…
The theme of this work is that the theory of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field can be generalized to a large class of operators if one uses an extended a class of Weyl operators which we call "Landau--Weyl pseudodifferential operators". The link between standard Weyl calculus and Landau--Weyl calculus is made explicit by the use of an infinite family of intertwining "windowed wavepacket transforms"; this makes possible the use of the theory of modulation spaces to study various regularity properties. Our techniques allow us not only to recover easily the eigenvalues and eigenfuncti…
In this paper, we consider the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation around an homogeneous Maxwellian equilibrium in a weakly collisional regime: there is a parameter $\eps$ in front of the collision operator which will tend to $0$. Moreover, we study two cases of collision operators, linear Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck. We prove a result of Landau damping for those equations in Sobolev spaces uniformly with respect to the collision parameter $\eps$ as it goes to $0$.
In this paper, we develop an alternative approach to establish the $L^2$ decay estimate for the linearized Landau equation in a bounded domain with specular boundary condition. The proof is based on the methodology of proof by contradiction motivated by [Guo, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 55(9):1104-1135, 2002] and [Guo, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 197(3):713-809, 2010].
We study the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equations with hard potential in the perturbation setting, and establish the analytic smoothing effect in both spatial and velocity variables for a class of low-regularity weak solutions. This shows the Landau equations behave essentially as the hypoelliptic Fokker-Planck operators. The spatial analyticity relies on a new time-average operator, and the proof is based on a straightforward energy estimate with a careful estimate on the derivatives with respect to the new time-average operator.
The Balescu-Lenard equation from plasma physics is widely considered to include a highly accurate correction to Landau's fundamental collision operator. Yet so far it has seen very little mathematical study. We perform an extensive linearized analysis of this equation, which includes determining the asymptotic behavior of the new components of the linearized operator and establishing time decay rates for the linearized equation.
The Landau-Lifshitz equation describes the behaviour of magnetization inside a ferromagnetic object. It is known that the Landau-Lifshitz equation has an infinite number of stable equilibrium points. The existence of multiple stable equilibria is closely related to hysteresis. This is a phenomenon that is often characterized by a looping behaviour; however, the existence of a loop is not sufficient to identify hysteretic systems, but is defined more precisely as the presence of looping as the frequency of the input goes to zero. We describe these two approaches to identification of hysteresis …
In this paper, we study the Landau equation under the Navier-Stokes scaling in the torus for hard and moderately soft potentials. More precisely, we investigate the Cauchy theory in a perturbative framework and establish some new short time regularization estimates for our rescaled nonlinear Landau equation. These estimates are quantified in time and optimal, indeed, we obtain the instantaneous expected anisotropic gain of regularity (see [53] for the corresponding hypoelliptic estimates on the linearized Landau collision operator). Moreover, the estimates giving the gain of regularity in the …
The Landau equation and the Boltzmann equation are connected through the limit of grazing collisions. This has been proved rigorously for certain families of Boltzmann operators concentrating on grazing collisions. In this contribution, we study the collision kernels associated to the two-particle scattering via a finite range potential $Φ(x)$ in three dimensions. We then consider the limit of weak interaction given by $Φ_ε(x) = εΦ(x)$. Here $ε\rightarrow 0$ is the grazing parameter, and the rate of collisions is rescaled to obtain a non-trivial limit. The grazing collisions limit is of partic…
In this paper we prove new constructive coercivity estimates for the Boltzmann collision operator without cutoff, that is for long-range interactions. In particular we give a generalized sufficient condition for the existence of a spectral gap which involves both the growth behavior of the collision kernel at large relative velocities and its singular behavior at grazing and frontal collisions. It provides in particular existence of a spectral gap and estimates on it for interactions deriving from the hard potentials $ϕ(r) = r^{-(s−1)}$, $s \ge 5$ or the so-called moderately soft potenti…
We investigate in this work the rate of convergence to equilibrium of solutions to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with soft potentials. Firstly, we prove a polynomial in time convergence using an entropy method with some new a priori estimates. Finally we prove an exponential in time convergence towards the equilibrium with the optimal rate given by the spectral gap of the associated linearized operator, combining new decay estimates for the semigroup generated by the linearized Landau operator in weighted $L^p$-spaces togheter with the polynomial decay described above.
This work deals with the inhomogeneous Landau equation on the torus in the cases of hard, maxwellian and moderately soft potentials. We first investigate the linearized equation and we prove exponential decay estimates for the associated semigroup. We then turn to the nonlinear equation and we use the linearized semigroup decay in order to construct solutions in a close-to-equilibrium setting. Finally, we prove a exponential stability for such a solution, with a rate as close as we want to the optimal rate given by the semigroup decay.
This paper deals with the long time behaviour of solutions to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potentials . We prove an exponential in time convergence towards the equilibrium with the optimal rate given by the spectral gap of the associated linearized operator. This result improves the polynomial in time convergence obtained by Desvillettes and Villani \cite{DesVi2}. Our approach is based on new decay estimates for the semigroup generated by the linearized Landau operator in weighted (polynomial or stretched exponential) $L^p$-spaces, using a method develloped by Gualdani, …
We study the linearized Vlasov equations and the linearized Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations in the weakly collisional limit in a uniform magnetic field. In both cases, we consider periodic confinement and Maxwellian (or close to Maxwellian) backgrounds. In the collisionless case, for modes transverse to the magnetic field, we provide a precise decomposition into a countably infinite family of standing waves for each spatial mode. These are known as Bernstein modes in the physics literature, though the decomposition is not an obvious consequence of any existing arguments that we are aware of. We…
In this paper we prove the existence of a large class of periodic solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson in one space dimension that decay exponentially as t goes to infinity. The exponential decay is well known for the linearized version of the Landau damping problem and it has been proved in [4] for a class of solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system that behaves asymptotically as free streaming solutions and are sufficiently flat in the space of velocities. The results in this paper enlarge the class of possible asymptotic limits, replacing the fatness condition in [4] by a stability condition for t…
We report on recent results and a new line of research at the crossroad of two major theories in the analysis of partial differential equations. The celebrated De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory shows H{ö}lder estimates and the Harnack inequality for uniformly elliptic or parabolic equations with rough coefficients in divergence form. The theory of hypoellipticity of H{ö}rmander shows, under general "bracket" conditions, the regularity of solutions to partial differential equations combining first and second order derivative operators when ellipticity fails in some directions. We discuss recent exten…
We extend the De Giorgi--Nash--Moser theory to a class of kinetic Fokker-Planck equations and deduce new results on the Landau-Coulomb equation. More precisely, we first study the H{ö}lder regularity and establish a Harnack inequality for solutions to a general linear equation of Fokker-Planck type whose coefficients are merely measurable and essentially bounded, i.e. assuming no regularity on the coefficients in order to later derive results for non-linear problems. This general equation has the formal structure of the hypoelliptic equations "of type II" , sometimes also called ultraparabolic…
In the paper, for the Cauchy problem on the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation in torus, we establish the global-in-time Gevrey smoothness in velocity and space variables for a class of low-regularity mild solutions near Maxwellians with the Gevrey index depending only on the angular singularity. This together with [24] provides a self-contained well-posedness theory for both existence and regularity of global solutions for initial data of low regularity in the framework of perturbations. For the proof we treat in a subtle way the commutator between the regularization operators and the Boltzmann co…
We study the time decay estimates for the linearized Landau equation on torus when the initial perturbation is not necessarily smooth. Our result reveals the kinetic and fluid aspects of the equation. We design a Picard-type iteration and Mixture lemma for constructing the increasingly regular kinetic like waves, they are carried by transport equations and have exponential time decay rate. The fluid like waves are constructed as part of the long-wave expansion in the spectrum of the Fourier mode for the space variable and the time decay rate depends on the size of the domain. The Mixture lemma…
For a general class of linear collisional kinetic models in the torus, including in particular the linearized Boltzmann equation for hard spheres, the linearized Landau equation with hard and moderately soft potentials and the semi-classical linearized fermionic and bosonic relaxation models, we prove explicit coercivity estimates on the associated integro-differential operator for some modified Sobolev norms. We deduce existence of classical solutions near equilibrium for the full non-linear models associated, with explicit regularity bounds, and we obtain explicit estimates on the rate of ex…
We establish existence of finite energy weak solutions to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation and the linearized Landau equation near Maxwellian, in the presence of specular reflection boundary condition for general domains. Moreover, by using a method of reflection and the $S_p$ estimate previously established by the first and the last author, we prove regularity in the kinetic Sobolev spaces $S_p$ and anisotropic Hölder spaces for such weak solutions. Such $S_p$ regularity leads to the uniqueness of weak solutions.
Ferromagnetic materials tend to develop very complex magnetization patterns whose time evolution is modeled by the so-called Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLG). In this paper, we construct time-periodic solutions for LLG in the regime of soft and small ferromagnetic particles which satisfy a certain shape condition. Roughly speaking, it is assumed that the length of the particle is greater than its hight and its width. The approach is based on a perturbation argument and the spectral analysis of the corresponding linearized problem as well as the theory of sectorial operators.
It is known that in the parameters range $-2 \leq γ<-2s$ spectral gap does not exist for the linearized Boltzmann operator without cutoff but it does for the linearized Landau operator. This paper is devoted to the understanding of the formation of spectral gap in this range through the grazing limit. Precisely, we study the Cauchy problems of these two classical collisional kinetic equations around global Maxwellians in torus and establish the following results that are uniform in the vanishing grazing parameter $ε$: (i) spectral gap type estimates for the collision operators; (ii) global exi…
The aim of the work is to provide a stable method to get sharp bounds for Boltzmann and Landau operators in weighted Sobolev spaces and in anisotropic spaces. All the sharp bounds are given for the original Boltzmann and Landau operators. The sharpness means the lower and upper bounds for the operators are consistent with the behavior of the linearized operators. Moreover, we make clear the difference between the bounds for the original operators and those for the linearized ones. According to the Bobylev's formula, we introduce two types of dyadic decompositions performed in both phase and fr…

This work deals with the Landau equation for very soft and Coulomb potentials near the associated Maxwellian equilibrium. We first investigate the corresponding linearized operator and develop a method to prove stability estimates of its associated semigroup in large functional spaces. We then deduce existence, uniqueness and fast decay of the solutions to the nonlinear equation in a close-to-equilibrium framework. Our result drastically improves the set of initial data compared to the one considered by Guo and Strain who established similar results in [21, 37, 38]. Our functional framework is…
In the paper, we are concerned with the large time asymptotics toward the viscous contact waves for solutions of the Landau equation with physically realistic Coulomb interactions. Precisely, for the corresponding Cauchy problem in the spatially one-dimensional setting, we construct the unique global-in-time solution near a local Maxwellian whose fluid quantities are the viscous contact waves in the sense of hydrodynamics and also prove that the solution tends toward such local Maxwellian in large time. The result is proved by elaborate energy estimates and seems the first one on the dynamical…
We study the dynamics of perturbations around an inhomogeneous stationary state of the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) model, satisfying a linearized stability criterion (Penrose criterion). We consider solutions of the linearized equation around the steady state, and prove the algebraic decay in time of the Fourier modes of their density. We prove moreover that these solutions exhibit a scattering behavior to a modified state, implying a linear Landau damping effect with an algebraic rate of damping.
In this paper, we study Landau damping in the weakly collisional limit of a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation with nonlinear collisions in the phase-space $(x,v) \in \mathbb T_x^n \times \mathbb R^n_v$. The goal is four-fold: (A) to understand how collisions suppress plasma echoes and enable Landau damping in agreement with linearized theory in Sobolev spaces, (B) to understand how phase mixing accelerates collisional relaxation, (C) to understand better how the plasma returns to global equilibrium during Landau damping, and (D) to rule out that collision-driven nonlinear instabilities dominate. W…
It has been unknown in kinetic theory whether the linearized Boltzmann or Landau equation with soft potentials admits a spectral gap in the spatially inhomogeneous setting. Most of existing works indicate a negative answer because the spectrum of two linearized self-adjoint collision operators is accumulated to the origin in case of soft interactions. In the paper we rather prove it in an affirmative way when the space domain is bounded with an inflow boundary condition. The key strategy is to introduce a new Hilbert space with an exponential weight function that involves the inner product of …
Going beyond the linearized study has been a longstanding problem in the theory of Landau damping. In this paper we establish exponential Landau damping in analytic regularity. The damping phenomenon is reinterpreted in terms of transfer of regularity between kinetic and spatial variables, rather than exchanges of energy; phase mixing is the driving mechanism. The analysis involves new families of analytic norms, measuring regularity by comparison with solutions of the free transport equation; new functional inequalities; a control of nonlinear echoes; sharp scattering estimates; and a Newton …
In an appropriate moving coordinate frame, source defects are time-periodic solutions to reaction-diffusion equations that are spatially asymptotic to spatially periodic wave trains whose group velocities point away from the core of the defect. In this paper, we rigorously establish nonlinear stability of spectrally stable source defects in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Due to the outward transport at the far field, localized perturbations may lead to a highly non-localized response even on the linear level. To overcome this, we first investigate in detail the dynamics of the solution …
In this manuscript we investigate the regularization of solutions for the spatially homogeneous Landau equation. For moderately soft potentials, it is shown that weak solutions become smooth instantaneously and stay so over all times, and the estimates depend only on the initial mass, energy, and entropy. For very soft potentials we obtain a conditional regularity result, hinging on what may be described as a nonlinear Morrey space bound, assumed to hold uniformly over time. This bound always holds in the case of moderately soft potentials, and nearly holds for general potentials, including Co…

We establish a spectral representation for solutions to linear Hamilton equations with positive definite energy in a Hilbert space. Our approach is a special version of M. Krein's spectral theory of J-selfadjoint operators is the Hilbert spaces with an indefinite metric. Our main result is an application to the eigenfunction expansion for the linearized relativistic Ginzburg-Landau equation.
The well-known Rutherford differential cross section, denoted by $ dΩ/dσ$, corresponds to a two body interaction with Coulomb potential. It leads to the logarithmically divergence of the momentum transfer (or the transport cross section) which is described by $$\int_{{\mathbb S}^2} (1-\cosθ) \frac{dΩ}{dσ} dσ\sim \int_0^π θ^{-1}dθ. $$ Here $θ$ is the deviation angle in the scattering event. Due to screening effect, physically one can assume that $θ_{\min}$ is the order of magnitude of the smallest angles for which the scattering can still be regarded as Coulomb scattering. Under ad hoc cutoff $…
