In this paper we prove new constructive coercivity estimates for the Boltzmann collision operator without cutoff, that is for long-range interactions. In particular we give a generalized sufficient condition for the existence of a spectral gap which involves both the growth behavior of the collision kernel at large relative velocities and its singular behavior at grazing and frontal collisions. It provides in particular existence of a spectral gap and estimates on it for interactions deriving from the hard potentials $ϕ(r) = r^{-(s−1)}$, $s \ge 5$ or the so-called moderately soft potentials $ϕ(r) = r^{−(s−1)}$, $3 < s < 5$, (without angular cutoff). In particular this paper recovers (by constructive means), improves and extends previous results of Pao [46]. We also obtain constructive coercivity estimates for the Landau collision operator for the optimal coercivity norm pointed out in [34] and we formulate a conjecture about a unified necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a spectral gap for Boltzmann and Landau linearized collision operators.
Linearized elasticity models are derived, via Gamma-convergence, from suitably rescaled nonlinear energies when the corresponding energy densities have a multiwell structure and satisfy a weak coercivity condition, in the sense that the typical quadratic bound from below is replaced by a weaker p bound, 1<p <2, away from the wells. This study is motivated by, and our results are applied to, energies arising in the modeling of nematic elastomers.
The quantum Boltzmann-Bose equation describes a large system of Bose-Einstein particles in the weak-coupling regime. If the particle interaction is governed by the inverse power law, the corresponding collision kernel has angular singularity. In this paper, we give a constructive proof of the coercivity estimate for the linearized quantum Boltzmann-Bose operator to capture the effects of the singularity and the fugacity. Precisely, the estimate explicitly reveals the dependence on the fugacity parameter before the Bose-Einstein condensation. With the coercivity estimate, the global in time wel…
The non-cutoff Kac operator is a kinetic model for the non-cutoff radially symmetric Boltzmann operator. For Maxwellian molecules, the linearization of the non-cutoff Kac operator around a Maxwellian distribution is shown to be a function of the harmonic oscillator, to be diagonal in the Hermite basis and to be essentially a fractional power of the harmonic oscillator. This linearized operator is a pseudodifferential operator, and we provide a complete asymptotic expansion for its symbol in a class enjoying a nice symbolic calculus. Related results for the linearized non-cutoff radially symmet…
It is known that the singularity in the non-cutoff cross-section of the Boltzmann equation leads to the gain of regularity and gain of weight in the velocity variable. By defining and analyzing a non-isotropy norm which precisely captures the dissipation in the linearized collision operator, we first give a new and precise coercivity estimate for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for general physical cross sections. Then the Cauchy problem for the Boltzmann equation is considered in the framework of small perturbation of an equilibrium state. In this part, for the soft potential case in the se…
We study weak solutions of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules with a logarithmic singularity of the collision kernel for grazing collisions. Even though in this situation the Boltzmann operator enjoys only a very weak coercivity estimate, it still leads to strong smoothing of weak solutions in accordance to the smoothing expected by an analogy with a logarithmic heat equation.
In many works, the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator is considered to behave essentially as a fractional Laplacian. In the present work, we prove that the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator with Maxwellian molecules is exactly equal to a fractional power of the linearized Landau operator which is the sum of the harmonic oscillator and the spherical Laplacian. This result allows to display explicit sharp coercive estimates satisfied by the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator for both Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian molecules.
We give quantitative estimates on the asymptotics of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator and its associated equation from angular cutoff to non cutoff. On one hand, the results disclose the link between the hyperbolic property resulting from the Grad's cutoff assumption and the smoothing property due to the long-range interaction. On the other hand, with the help of the localization techniques in the phase space, we observe some new phenomenon in the asymptotic limit process. As a consequence, we give the affirmative answer to the question that there is no jump for the property that th…
It has long been suspected that the non-cutoff Boltzmann operator has similar coercivity properties as a fractional Laplacian. This has led to the hope that the homogenous Boltzmann equation enjoys similar regularity properties as the heat equation with a fractional Laplacian. In particular, the weak solution of the fully nonlinear non-cutoff homogenous Boltzmann equation with initial datum in $L^1_2(\mathbb{R}^d)\cap L\log L(\mathbb{R}^d)$, i.e., finite mass, energy and entropy, should immediately become Gevrey regular for strictly positive times. We prove this conjecture for Maxwellian molec…
This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. The non-cutoff theory for the relativistic Boltzmann equation has been rarely studied even under a smallness assumption on the initial data due to the lack of understanding of the spectrum and the need for coercivity estimates on the linearized collision operator. Namely, it is crucial to obtain the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier to obtain this coercivity that has never been established before. In this paper, we prove the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier for a general relativi…
In this article we provide global subelliptic estimates for the linearized inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff, and show that some global gain in the spatial direction is available although the corresponding operator is not elliptic in this direction. The proof is based on a multiplier method and the so-called Wick quantization, together with a careful analysis of the symbolic properties of the Weyl symbol of the Boltzmann collision operator.
In this paper, we find that the linearized collision operator $L$ of the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with soft potential generates a strongly continuous semigroup on $H^k_n$, with $k,n\in\mathbb{R}$. In the theory of Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff, the weighted Sobolev space plays a fundamental role. The proof is based on pseudo-differential calculus and in general, for a specific class of Weyl quantization, the $L^2$ dissipation implies $H^k_n$ dissipation. This kind of estimate is also known as the Gårding's inequality.
This article proves the regularity for the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff with hard potential. By sharpening the coercivity and upper bound estimate on the collision operator, analyzing the Poisson bracket between the transport operator and some weighted pseudo-differential operator, we prove the regularizing effect in space and velocity variables when the initial data has mild regularity.
This paper continues the authors' previous study (SIAM J. Math. Anal., 2016) of the trend toward equilibrium of the Becker-Döring equations with subcritical mass, by characterizing certain fine properties of solutions to the linearized equation. In particular, we partially characterize the spectrum of the linearized operator, showing that it contains the entire imaginary axis in polynomially weighted spaces. Moreover, we prove detailed cutoff estimates that establish upper and lower bounds on the lifetime of a class of perturbations to equilibrium.
We investigate the regularity issue for the diffuse reflection boundary problem to the stationary linearized Boltzmann equation for hard sphere potential, cutoff hard potential, or cutoff Maxwellian molecular gases in a strictly convex bounded domain. We obtain pointwise estimates for first derivatives of the solution provided the boundary temperature is bounded differentiable and the solution is bounded. This result can be understood as a stationary version of the velocity averaging lemma and mixture lemma.
We consider the regularity of stationary solutions to the linearized Boltzmann equations in bounded $C^1$ convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for gases with cutoff hard potential and cutoff Maxwellian gases. We prove that the stationary solutions solutions are Hölder continuous with order $\frac1{2}^-$ away from the boundary provided the incoming data have the same regularity. The key idea is to partially transfer the regularity in velocity obtained by collision to space through transport and collision.
A new coercivity estimate on the spectral gap of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator for multiple species is proved. The assumptions on the collision kernels include hard and Maxwellian potentials under Grad's angular cut-off condition. Two proofs are given: a non-constructive one, based on the decomposition of the collision operator into a compact and a coercive part, and a constructive one, which exploits the "cross-effects" coming from collisions between different species and which yields explicit constants. Furthermore, the essential spectra of the linearized collision operator and…
The Boltzmann equation without an angular cutoff is considered when the initial data is a small perturbation of a global Maxwellian with an algebraic decay in the velocity variable. A well-posedness theory in the perturbative framework is obtained for both mild and strong angular singularities by combining three ingredients: the moment propagation, the spectral gap of the linearized operator, and the regularizing effect of the linearized operator when the initial data is in a Sobolev space with a negative index. A carefully designed pseudo-differential operator plays an central role in capturi…
In the paper, for the Cauchy problem on the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation in torus, we establish the global-in-time Gevrey smoothness in velocity and space variables for a class of low-regularity mild solutions near Maxwellians with the Gevrey index depending only on the angular singularity. This together with [24] provides a self-contained well-posedness theory for both existence and regularity of global solutions for initial data of low regularity in the framework of perturbations. For the proof we treat in a subtle way the commutator between the regularization operators and the Boltzmann co…
It is known that in the parameters range $-2 \leq γ<-2s$ spectral gap does not exist for the linearized Boltzmann operator without cutoff but it does for the linearized Landau operator. This paper is devoted to the understanding of the formation of spectral gap in this range through the grazing limit. Precisely, we study the Cauchy problems of these two classical collisional kinetic equations around global Maxwellians in torus and establish the following results that are uniform in the vanishing grazing parameter $ε$: (i) spectral gap type estimates for the collision operators; (ii) global exi…
In this paper we study the Gevrey smoothing effect of solutions to the non-cutoff spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation for soft potential. We consider the mild singularity case $s<1/2$ as we did in the previous work for spatially homogeneous case (J. Diff. Equ. 253(4) (2012), 1172-1190. DOI: 10.1016/j.jde.2012.04.023) and for spatially inhomogeneous case (arXiv:1304.2971), and try to extend the range of $γ$. We derive a new coercivity estimate for collision operator, using which we can obtain the Gevrey regularity for $γ\in (-5/2,0)$ improving the previous assumption $γ\i…
We consider the Boltzmann operator for mixtures with cutoff Maxwellian, hard potentials, or hard spheres collision kernels. In a perturbative regime around the global Maxwellian equilibrium, the linearized Boltzmann multi-species operator $\mathbf{L}$ is known to possess an explicit spectral gap $λ_{\mathbf{L}}$, in the global equilibrium weighted $L^2$ space. We study a new operator $\mathbf{L^\varepsilon}$ obtained by linearizing the Boltzmann operator for mixtures around local Maxwellian distributions, where all the species evolve with different small macroscopic velocities of order $\varep…
The linearized collision operator of the Boltzmann equation can in a natural way be written as a sum of a positive multiplication operator, the collision frequency, and an integral operator. Compactness of the integral operator for monatomic single species is a classical result, while corresponding result for mixtures is more recently obtained. In this work the compactness of the operator for polyatomic single species, where the polyatomicity is modeled by a discrete internal energy variable, is studied. With a probabilistic formulation of the collision operator as a starting point, compactnes…
It is shown that in core-radius cutoff regularized simplified elasticity (where the elastic energy depends quadratically on the full displacement gradient rather than its symmetrized version), the force on a dislocation curve by the negative gradient of the elastic energy asymptotically approaches the mean curvature of the curve as the cutoff radius converges to zero. Rigorous error bounds in Hölder spaces are provided. As an application, convergence of dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the elastic energy to dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the arclength functional, when t…
The Boltzmann equation without Grad's angular cutoff assumption is believed to have regularizing effect on the solution because of the non-integrable angular singularity of the cross-section. However, even though so far this has been justified satisfactorily for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation, it is still basically unsolved for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation. In this paper, by sharpening the coercivity and upper bound estimates for the collision operator, establishing the hypo-ellipticity of the Boltzmann operator based on a generalized version of the uncertainty …
Shakhov model is a relaxation approximation of the Boltzmann equation proposed to overcome the deficiency of the original BGK model, namely, the incorrect production of the Prandtl number. In this paper, we address the existence and the asymptotic stability of the Shakhov model when the initial data is a small perturbation of global equilibrium. We derive a dichotomy in the coercive estimate of the linearized relaxation operator between zero and non-zero Prandtl number, and observe that the linearized relaxation operator is more degenerate in the former case. To remove such degeneracy and reco…
This article presents a new approach of semigroup analysis and pseudo-differential calculus for deriving the regularizing estimate on non-cutoff linearized Boltzmann equation. We are able to obtain regularizing estimate of semigroup $e^{tB}$ that is continuous from weighted Sobolev space $H(a^{-1/2})H^m_x$ to $H(a^{1/2})H^m_x$ with a sharp large time decay. With these properties, we prove the existence of global-in-time unique solution to the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for hard potential on the whole space with weak regularity assumption on initial data. We consider the hard potential case …
We prove the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions around an equilibrium to the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff in some Sobolev spaces. In addition, the solutions thus obtained are shown to be non-negative and $C^\infty$ in all variables for any positive time. In this paper, we study the Maxwellian molecule type collision operator with mild singularity. One of the key observations is the introduction of a new important norm related to the singular behavior of the cross section in the collision operator. This norm captures the essential properties of the singularity a…
The well-known Rutherford differential cross section, denoted by $ dΩ/dσ$, corresponds to a two body interaction with Coulomb potential. It leads to the logarithmically divergence of the momentum transfer (or the transport cross section) which is described by $$\int_{{\mathbb S}^2} (1-\cosθ) \frac{dΩ}{dσ} dσ\sim \int_0^π θ^{-1}dθ. $$ Here $θ$ is the deviation angle in the scattering event. Due to screening effect, physically one can assume that $θ_{\min}$ is the order of magnitude of the smallest angles for which the scattering can still be regarded as Coulomb scattering. Under ad hoc cutoff $…
We study the quantitative pointwise behavior of the solutions of the linearized Boltzmann equation for hard potentials, Maxwellian molecules and soft potentials, with Grad's angular cutoff assumption. More precisely, for solutions inside the finite Mach number region, we obtain the pointwise fluid structure for hard potentials and Maxwellian molecules, and optimal time decay in the fluid part and sub-exponential time decay in the non-fluid part for soft potentials. For solutions outside the finite Mach number region, we obtain sub-exponential decay in the space variable. The singular wave esti…
We consider the global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions to the ellipsoidal BGK model for polyatomic molecules when the initial data starts sufficiently close to a global polyatomic Maxwellian. We observe that the linearized relaxation operator is decomposed into a trully polyatomic part and a essentially monatomic part, leading to a dichotomy in the dissipative property in the sense that the degeneracy of the dissipation shows an abrupt jump as the relaxation parameter $θ$ reaches zero. Accordingly, we employ two different sets of micro-macro system to derive the full c…
The Landau equation and the Boltzmann equation are connected through the limit of grazing collisions. This has been proved rigorously for certain families of Boltzmann operators concentrating on grazing collisions. In this contribution, we study the collision kernels associated to the two-particle scattering via a finite range potential $Φ(x)$ in three dimensions. We then consider the limit of weak interaction given by $Φ_ε(x) = εΦ(x)$. Here $ε\rightarrow 0$ is the grazing parameter, and the rate of collisions is rescaled to obtain a non-trivial limit. The grazing collisions limit is of partic…
In this article we study the Gevrey regularization effect for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. This equation is partially elliptic in the velocity direction and degenerates in the spatial variable. We consider the nonlinear Cauchy problem for the fluctuation around the Maxwellian distribution and prove that any solution with mild regularity will become smooth in Gevrey class at positive time, with Gevrey index depending on the angular singularity. Our proof relies on the symbolic calculus for the collision operator and the global subelliptic estimate for t…
For the Boltzmann equation with cutoff hard potentials, we construct the unique global solution converging with an exponential rate in large time to global Maxwellians not only for the specular reflection boundary condition with the bounded convex C^3 domain but also for a class of large amplitude initial data where the L^infty norm with a suitable velocity weight can be arbitrarily large but the relative entropy need to be small. A key point in the proof is to introduce a delicate nonlinear iterative process of estimating the gain term basing on the triple Duhamel iteration along the lineariz…
This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. We establish the global-in-time existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic stability for solutions nearby the relativistic Maxwellian. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. We assume the generic hard-interaction and soft-interaction conditions on the collision kernel that were derived by Dudyński and Ekiel-Je$\dot{\text{z}}$ewska (Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{115}(4):607--629, 1985), and our assumptions include the case of Israel particles (J. Math. Phys. \textbf{4}:1163--1181, 1963). In this physical s…
We prove the unique existence and exponential decay of global in time classical solutions to the special relativistic Boltzmann equation without any angular cut-off assumptions with initial perturbations in some weighted Sobolev spaces. We consider perturbations of the relativistic Maxwellian equilibrium states. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. We consider the general conditions on the collision kernel from Dudyński and Ekiel-Jeźewska (Commun Math Phys \textbf{115}(4):607--629, 1985). Additionally, we prove sharp constructive upper and coercive lower bounds for the linearized r…
The motion of rarefied gases for uniform shear flow at the kinetic level is governed by the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with a deformation force. In the paper we study the corresponding Cauchy problem with initial data of finite mass and energy for the collision kernel in case of hard potentials $0<γ\leq 1$ under the cutoff assumption. We prove the global existence and large time behavior of solutions provided that the force strength $α>0$ is small enough. In particular, when the initial perturbation is of order $α^m$ for $m>2$, we make a rigorous justification of the uniform-in-t…
