It is shown that in core-radius cutoff regularized simplified elasticity (where the elastic energy depends quadratically on the full displacement gradient rather than its symmetrized version), the force on a dislocation curve by the negative gradient of the elastic energy asymptotically approaches the mean curvature of the curve as the cutoff radius converges to zero. Rigorous error bounds in Hölder spaces are provided.
As an application, convergence of dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the elastic energy to dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the arclength functional, when the motion law is given by an $H^1$-type dissipation, and convergence to curve shortening flow in co-dimension $2$ for the usual $L^2$-dissipation is established. In the second scenario, existence and regularity are assumed while the $H^1$-gradient flow is treated in full generality (for short time).
The methods developed here are a blueprint for the more physical setting of linearized isotropic elasticity.
We consider a linearized inverse boundary value problem for the elasticity system. From the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at zero frequency, we show that a transversely isotropic perturbation of a homogeneous isotropic elastic tensor can be uniquely determined. From the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at two distinct positive frequencies, we show that a transversely isotropic perturbation of a homogeneous isotropic density can be identified at the same time.
This paper examines a system of partial differential equations describing dislocation dynamics in a crystalline solid. In particular we consider dynamics linearized about a state of zero stress and use linear semigroup theory to establish existence, uniqueness, and time asymptotic behavior of the linear system.
In this paper we do a comparative presentation of the linear isotropic Cosserat elastic model from two perspectives: the classical Mindlin-Eringen-Nowacki description in terms of a microrotation vector and a new formulation in terms of a skew-symmetric matrix and a curvature energy in dislocation form. We provide the reader with an alternative representation of the energy for the isotropic Cosserat model to ease the comparison with the relaxed micromorphic model and the geometrically nonlinear Cosserat elastic model.
In linearised continuum elasticity, the elastic strain due to a straight dislocation line decays as $O(r^{-1})$, where $r$ denotes the distance to the defect core. It is shown in Ehrlacher, Ortner, Shapeev (2016) that the core correction due to nonlinear and discrete (atomistic) effects decays like $O(r^{-2})$. In the present work, we focus on screw dislocations under pure anti-plane shear kinematics. In this setting we demonstrate that an improved decay $O(r^{-p})$, $p > 2$, of the core correction is obtained when crystalline symmetries are fully exploited and possibly a simple and explicit c…
On the example of linearized elasticity we provide a framework for simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction in the setting of linearized elasticity as well as non-linear elasticity for the derivation of homogenized von Kármán plate and bending rod models. The framework encompasses even perforated domains and domains with oscillatory boundary, provided that the corresponding extension operator can be constructed. Locality property of $Γ$-closure is established, i.e. every energy density obtained by the homogenization process can be in almost every point be obtained as the limit of pe…
We precisely and rigorously characterise the decay of elastic fields generated by dislocations in crystalline materials, focusing specifically on the role of multilattices. Concretely, we establish that the elastic field generated by a dislocation in a multilattice can be decomposed into a continuum field predicted by a linearised Cauchy-Born elasticity theory, and a discrete and nonlinear core corrector representing the defect core. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically the consequences of this result for cell size effects in numerical simulations.

We consider a discrete model of planar elasticity where the particles, in the reference configuration, sit on a regular triangular lattice and interact through nearest neighbor pairwise potentials, with bonds modeled as linearized elastic springs. Within this framework we introduce plastic slip fields, whose discrete circulation around each triangle detects the possible presence of an edge dislocation. We provide a $Γ$-convergence analysis, as the lattice spacing tends to zero, of the elastic energy induced by edge dislocations in the energy regime corresponding to a finite number of geometric…
In this paper we prove a two-dimensional existence result for a variational model of crack growth for brittle materials in the realm of linearized elasticity. Starting with a time-discretized version of the evolution driven by a prescribed boundary load, we derive a time-continuous quasistatic crack growth in the framework of generalized special functions of bounded deformation (GSBD). As the time-discretization step tends to $0$, the major difficulty lies in showing the stability of the static equilibrium condition, which is achieved by means of a Jump Transfer Lemma generalizing the result o…
We study an atomistic model that describes the microscopic formation of material voids inside elastically stressed solids under an additional curvature regularization at the discrete level. Using a discrete-to-continuum analysis, by means of a recent geometric rigidity result in variable domains [27] and Γ-convergence tools, we rigorously derive effective linearized continuum models for elastically stressed solids with material voids in three-dimensional elasticity.
The self-interaction force of dislocation curves in metals depends on the local arrangement of the atoms and on the nonlocal interaction between dislocation curve segments. While these nonlocal segment-segment interactions can be accurately described by linear elasticity when the segments are further apart than the atomic scale of size $\varepsilon$, this model breaks down and blows up when the segments are $O(\varepsilon)$ apart. To separate the nonlocal interactions from the local contribution, various models depending on $\varepsilon$ have been constructed to account for the nonlocal term. …
In this paper, we perform mathematical validation of the Peierls--Nabarro (PN) models, which are multiscale models of dislocations that incorporate the detailed dislocation core structure. We focus on the static and dynamic PN models of an edge dislocation. In a PN model, the total energy includes the elastic energy in the two half-space continua and a nonlinear potential energy across the slip plane, which is always infinite. We rigorously establish the relationship between the PN model in the full space and the reduced problem on the slip plane in terms of both governing equations and energy…
We consider pure traction problems and we show that incompressible linearized elasticity can be obtained as variational limit of incompressible finite elasticity under suitable conditions on external loads.
In this paper, we derive a linearized Kirchhoff model from three dimensional nonlinear elastic energy of plates with incompatible prestrain as its thickness $h$ tends to zero and its elastic energy scales like $h^β$ with $2<β<4.$ The incompatible prestrain is given as a Riemannian metric $G(x')$ in the three dimensional thin plate which only depends on mid-plate of the thin plates. The problem is studied rigorously by using a variational approach and establishing the $Γ-$ limit of the non-Euclidean version of the nonlinear elasticity functional when the gauss curvature of the mid-plate $(Ω, g=…
We provide an approximation result for the pure traction problem of linearized elasticity in terms of local minimizers of finite elasticity, under the constraint of vanishing average curl for admissible deformation maps. When suitable rotations are included in the constraint, the limit is shown to be the linear elastic equilibrium associated to rotated loads.
In non-linear incompatible elasticity, the configurations are maps from a non-Euclidean body manifold into the ambient Euclidean space, $\mathbb{R}^k$. We prove the $Γ$-convergence of elastic energies for configurations of a converging sequence, $\mathcal{M}_n\to\mathcal{M}$, of body manifolds. This convergence result has several implications: (i) It can be viewed as a general structural stability property of the elastic model. (ii) It applies to certain classes of bodies with defects, and in particular, to the limit of bodies with increasingly dense edge-dislocations. (iii) It applies to appr…
