Motivated by recent interest in elastic problems in which the target space is non-Euclidean, we study a limit where local rest distances within an elastic body are incompatible, yet close to, distances within the ambient space. Specifically, we obtain, via $Γ$-convergence, a limit elastic model for a sequence of elastic bodies $(M,g_\varepsilon)$ in an ambient space $(S,s)$, for Riemannian metrics $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$ such that $g_\varepsilon \to s$. Furthermore, we relate the minimum of the limit problem to a linearized curvature discrepancy between $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$, using recent results of Kupferman and Leder. This relation confirms a linearized version of a long-standing conjecture in elasticity regarding the relation between the elastic energy and the curvature of the underlying space. The main technical challenge, compared to other linearization results in elasticity, is obtaining the correct notion of displacement for manifold-valued configurations, using Sobolev truncations and parallel transport. We show that the associated compactness result is obtained if $(S,s)$ satisfies a quantitative rigidity property, analogous to the Friesecke--James--Müller rigidity estimate in Euclidean space, and show that this property holds when $(S,s)$ is a round sphere.
We consider pure traction problems and we show that incompressible linearized elasticity can be obtained as variational limit of incompressible finite elasticity under suitable conditions on external loads.
We obtain linear elasticity as $Γ$-limit of finite elasticity under incompressibility assumption and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The result is shown for a large class of energy densities for rubber-like materials.
We prove existence and uniqueness for solutions to equilibrium problems for free-standing, traction-free, non homogeneous crystals in the presence of plastic slips. Moreover we prove that this class of problems is closed under G-convergence of the operators. In particular the homogenization procedure, valid for elliptic systems in linear elasticity, depicts the macroscopic features of a composite material in the presence of plastic deformation.
We study non-convex elastic energy functionals associated to (spatially) periodic, frame indifferent energy densities with a single non-degenerate energy well at SO(n). Under the assumption that the energy density admits a quadratic Taylor expansion at identity, we prove that the Gamma-limits associated to homogenization and linearization commute. Moreover, we show that the homogenized energy density, which is determined by a multi-cell homogenization formula, has a quadratic Taylor expansion with a quadratic term that is given by the homogenization of the quadratic term associated to the line…
We consider the topic of linearization of finite elasticity for pure traction problems. We characterize the variational limit for the approximating sequence of rescaled nonlinear elastic energies. We show that the limiting minimal value can be strictly lower than the minimal value of the standard linear elastic energy if a strict compatibility condition for external loads does not hold. The results are provided for both the compressible and the incompressible case.
A new energy functional for pure traction problems in elasticity has been deduced in [23] as the variational limit of nonlinear elastic energy functional for a material body subject to an equilibrated force field: a sort of Gamma limit with respect to the weak convergence of strains when a suitable small parameter tends to zero. This functional exhibits a gap that makes it different from the classical linear elasticity functional. Nevertheless a suitable compatibility condition on the force field ensures coincidence of related minima and minimizers. Here we show some relevant properties of the…
The equations of stress equilibrium and strain compatibility/incompatibility are discussed for fields with point singularities in a planar domain. The sufficiency (or insufficiency) of the smooth maps, obtained by restricting the singular fields to the domain away from the singularities, in completely characterizing the equations of equilibrium and compatibility/incompatibility over the entire domain, is established and illustrated with examples. The uniqueness of the solution to the stress problem of incompatible linear elasticity, allowing for singular fields, is proved. The uniqueness fails…
Non-Euclidean, or incompatible elasticity is an elastic theory for pre-stressed materials, which is based on a modeling of the elastic body as a Riemannian manifold. In this paper we derive a dimensionally-reduced model of the so-called membrane limit of a thin incompatible body. By generalizing classical dimension reduction techniques to the Riemannian setting, we are able to prove a general theorem that applies to an elastic body of arbitrary dimension, arbitrary slender dimension, and arbitrary metric. The limiting model implies the minimization of an integral functional defined over immers…
We consider Riesz' fractional gradient and a truncated version of it. The equations of nonlocal nonlinear elasticity based on those gradients are known. We perform a formal linearization and arrive at the equations of linear elasticity based on those nonlocal operators. We prove the existence of solutions of the linear equations, notably, by a nonlocal version of Korn's inequality. Finally, we show that the linearizations obtained are particular cases of Eringen's model with singular kernels.
We derive a continuum model for incompatible elasticity as a variational limit of a family of discrete nearest-neighbor elastic models. The discrete models are based on discretizations of a smooth Riemannian manifold $(M,\mathfrak{g})$, endowed with a flat, symmetric connection $\nabla$. The metric $\mathfrak{g}$ determines local equilibrium distances between neighboring points; the connection $\nabla$ induces a lattice structure shared by all the discrete models. The limit model satisfies a fundamental rigidity property: there are no stress-free configurations, unless $\mathfrak{g}$ is flat, …
In this paper, we derive a linearized Kirchhoff model from three dimensional nonlinear elastic energy of plates with incompatible prestrain as its thickness $h$ tends to zero and its elastic energy scales like $h^β$ with $2<β<4.$ The incompatible prestrain is given as a Riemannian metric $G(x')$ in the three dimensional thin plate which only depends on mid-plate of the thin plates. The problem is studied rigorously by using a variational approach and establishing the $Γ-$ limit of the non-Euclidean version of the nonlinear elasticity functional when the gauss curvature of the mid-plate $(Ω, g=…
Under a suitable notion of equivalence of integral densities we prove a $Γ$-closure theorem for integral functionals: The limit of a sequence of $Γ$-convergent families of such functionals is again a $Γ$-convergent family. Its $Γ$-limit is the limit of the $Γ$-limits of the original problems. This result not only provides a common basic principle for a number of linearization and homogenization results in elasticity theory. It also allows for new applications as we exemplify by proving that geometric linearization and homogenization of multi-well energy functionals commute.
The rigorous derivation of linear elasticity from finite elasticity by means of Gamma-convergence is a well-known result, which has been extended to different models also beyond the elastic regime. However, in these results the applied forces are usually assumed to be dead loads, that is, their density in the reference configuration is independent of the actual deformation. In this paper we begin a study of the variational derivation of linear elasticity in the presence of live loads. We consider a pure traction problem for a nonlinearly elastic body subject to a pressure live load and we comp…
We address three related problems in the theory of elasticity, formulated in the framework of double forms: the Saint-Venant compatibility condition, the existence and uniqueness of solutions for equations arising in incompatible elasticity, and the existence of stress potentials. The scope of this work is for manifolds with boundary of arbitrary dimension, having constant sectional curvature. The central analytical machinery is the regular ellipticity of a boundary-value problem for a bilaplacian operator, and its consequences, which were developed in [KL21]. One of the novelties of this work…
We derive geometrically linearized theories for incompressible materials from nonlinear elasticity theory in the small displacement regime. Our nonlinear stored energy densities may vary on the same (small) length scale as the typical displacements. This allows for applications to multiwell energies as, e.g., encountered in martensitic phases of shape memory alloys and models for nematic elastomers. Under natural assumptions on the asymptotic behavior of such densities we prove Gamma-convergence of the properly rescaled nonlinear energy functionals to the relaxation of an effective model. The …
In this work, we study the Dirichlet problem associated with a strongly coupled system of nonlocal equations. The system of equations comes from a linearization of a model of peridynamics, a nonlocal model of elasticity. It is a nonlocal analogue of the Navier-Lamé system of classical elasticity. The leading operator is an integro-differential operator characterized by a distinctive matrix kernel which is used to couple differences of components of a vector field. The paper's main contributions are proving well-posedness of the system of equations and demonstrating optimal local Sobolev regula…
In non-linear incompatible elasticity, the configurations are maps from a non-Euclidean body manifold into the ambient Euclidean space, $\mathbb{R}^k$. We prove the $Γ$-convergence of elastic energies for configurations of a converging sequence, $\mathcal{M}_n\to\mathcal{M}$, of body manifolds. This convergence result has several implications: (i) It can be viewed as a general structural stability property of the elastic model. (ii) It applies to certain classes of bodies with defects, and in particular, to the limit of bodies with increasingly dense edge-dislocations. (iii) It applies to appr…
