We derive geometrically linearized theories for incompressible materials from nonlinear elasticity theory in the small displacement regime. Our nonlinear stored energy densities may vary on the same (small) length scale as the typical displacements. This allows for applications to multiwell energies as, e.g., encountered in martensitic phases of shape memory alloys and models for nematic elastomers. Under natural assumptions on the asymptotic behavior of such densities we prove Gamma-convergence of the properly rescaled nonlinear energy functionals to the relaxation of an effective model. The resulting limiting theory is geometrically linearized in the sense that it acts on infinitesimal displacements rather than finite deformations, but will in general still have a limiting stored energy density that depends in a nonlinear way on the infinitesimal strains. Our results, in particular, establish a rigorous link of existing finite and infinitesimal theories for incompressible nematic elastomers.
We consider pure traction problems and we show that incompressible linearized elasticity can be obtained as variational limit of incompressible finite elasticity under suitable conditions on external loads.
We obtain linear elasticity as $Γ$-limit of finite elasticity under incompressibility assumption and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The result is shown for a large class of energy densities for rubber-like materials.
We study non-convex elastic energy functionals associated to (spatially) periodic, frame indifferent energy densities with a single non-degenerate energy well at SO(n). Under the assumption that the energy density admits a quadratic Taylor expansion at identity, we prove that the Gamma-limits associated to homogenization and linearization commute. Moreover, we show that the homogenized energy density, which is determined by a multi-cell homogenization formula, has a quadratic Taylor expansion with a quadratic term that is given by the homogenization of the quadratic term associated to the line…
We consider the topic of linearization of finite elasticity for pure traction problems. We characterize the variational limit for the approximating sequence of rescaled nonlinear elastic energies. We show that the limiting minimal value can be strictly lower than the minimal value of the standard linear elastic energy if a strict compatibility condition for external loads does not hold. The results are provided for both the compressible and the incompressible case.
We prove convergence of critical points $u^h$ of the nonlinear elastic energies $E^h$ of thin incompressible plates $Ω^h=Ω\times (-h/2, h/2)$, which satisfy the von Kármán scaling: $E^h(u^h)\leq Ch^4$, to critical points of the appropriate limiting (incompressible von Kármán) functional.
The paper is devoted to the derivation, by linearization, of simplified (fully homogenized) homogenized models of an immiscible incompressible two-phase flow in double porosity media in the case of thin fissures. In a simplified dual porosity model derived previously by the authors the matrix-fracture source term is approximated by a convolution type source term. This approach enables to exclude the cell problem, in form of the imbibition equation, from the global double porosity model. In this paper we propose a new linear version of the imbibition equation which leads to a new simplified dua…
A new energy functional for pure traction problems in elasticity has been deduced in [23] as the variational limit of nonlinear elastic energy functional for a material body subject to an equilibrated force field: a sort of Gamma limit with respect to the weak convergence of strains when a suitable small parameter tends to zero. This functional exhibits a gap that makes it different from the classical linear elasticity functional. Nevertheless a suitable compatibility condition on the force field ensures coincidence of related minima and minimizers. Here we show some relevant properties of the…
We study the shape differentiability of a general functional depending on the solution of a bidimensional stationary Stokes-Elasticity system, with respect to the reference domain of the elastic structure immersed in a viscous fluid. The differentiability with respect to reference elastic domain variations are considered under shape perturbations with diffeomorphisms. The shape-derivative is then calculated with the use of the velocity method. This derivative involves the material derivatives of the solution of this Fluid-Structure Interaction problem. The adjoint method is used to obtain a si…
In this paper we analyze the interaction of an incompressible Newtonian fluid with a linearly elastic Koiter shell whose motion is restricted to transverse displacements. The middle surface of the shell constitutes the mathematical boundary of the threedimensional fluid domain. We show that weak solutions exist as long as the magnitude of the displacement stays below some (possibly large) bound which is determined by the geometry of the undeformed shell.
In this paper we analyze the interaction of an incompressible, generalized Newtonian fluid with a linearly elastic Koiter shell whose motion is restricted to transverse displacements. The middle surface of the shell constitutes the mathematical boundary of the three-dimensional fluid domain. We show that weak solutions exist as long as the magnitude of the displacement stays below some (possibly large) bound which is determined by the geometry of the undeformed shell.
We are interested in studying an unsteady fluid-structure interaction problem in a three-dimensional space. We consider a homogeneous Newtonian fluid which is modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations. Whereas the motion of the structure is described by the quasi-incompressible non-linear Saint Venant-Kirchhoff model. We establish the local in time existence and uniqueness of solution for this model. For this sake, first we rewrite the non-linearity of the elastodynamic equation in an explicit way. Then, a linearized problem is introduced in the Lagrangian reference configuration and we prove tha…
This paper is devoted to the algorithmic development of inverse elastic scattering problems. We focus on reconstructing the locations and shapes of elastic scatterers with known dictionary data for the nearly incompressible materials. The scatterers include non-penetrable rigid obstacles and penetrable mediums, and we use time-harmonic elastic point signals as the incident input waves. The scattered waves are collected in a relatively small backscattering aperture on a bounded surface. A two-stage algorithm is proposed for the reconstruction and only two incident waves of different wavenumbers…
We consider a general class of parametrized displacement boundary value problems in incompressible nonlinear elasticity. We prove the existence of an unbounded solution branch of classical injective solutions emanating from the unforced stress-free reference configuration, which constitutes a sharp global implicit function theorem. The ramifications of this are: There exists at least one solution for any given applied loading, and or there exists solutions of arbitrarily large norm for some finite loading. We refer to this as solutions in the large. The nonlinear constraint equation enforcing …
Under a suitable notion of equivalence of integral densities we prove a $Γ$-closure theorem for integral functionals: The limit of a sequence of $Γ$-convergent families of such functionals is again a $Γ$-convergent family. Its $Γ$-limit is the limit of the $Γ$-limits of the original problems. This result not only provides a common basic principle for a number of linearization and homogenization results in elasticity theory. It also allows for new applications as we exemplify by proving that geometric linearization and homogenization of multi-well energy functionals commute.
The motion of an elastic solid inside of an incompressible viscous fluid is ubiquitous in nature. Mathematically, such motion is described by a PDE system that couples the parabolic and hyperbolic phases, the latter inducing a loss of regularity which has left the basic question of existence open until now. In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of such motions (locally in time), when the elastic solid is the linear Kirchhoff elastic material. The solution is found using a topological fixed-point theorem that requires the analysis of a linear problem consisting of the coupling be…
In this paper, we investigate the phenomenon of particle rebound in a viscous incompressible fluid environment. We focus on the important case of no-slip boundary conditions, for which it is by now classical that, under certain assumptions, collisions cannot occur in finite time. Motivated by the desire to understand this fascinating yet counterintuitive fluid-structure interaction, we introduce a reduced model which we study both analytically and numerically. In this simplified framework, we provide conditions which allow to prove that rebound is possible even in the absence of a topological …
We use variational convergence to derive a hierarchy of one-dimensional rod theories, starting out from three-dimensional models in nonlinear elasticity subject to local volume-preservation. The densities of the resulting $Γ$-limits are determined by minimization problems with a trace constraint that arises from the linearization of the determinant condition of incompressibility. While the proofs of the lower bounds rely on suitable constraint regularization, the upper bounds require a careful, explicit construction of locally volume-preserving recovery sequences. After decoupling the cross-se…
Various models of tumor growth are available in the litterature. A first class describes the evolution of the cell number density when considered as a continuous visco-elastic material with growth. A second class, describes the tumor as a set and rules for the free boundary are given related to the classical Hele-Shaw model of fluid dynamics. Following the lines of previous papers where the material is described by a purely elastic material, or when active cell motion is included, we make the link between the two levels of description considering the 'stiff pressure law' limit. Even though vis…
We prove the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to an evolutionary PDE system describing flows of incompressible \emph{heat-conducting} viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion, subject to a stick-slip boundary condition for the velocity and a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the extra stress tensor. In the introductory section we develop the thermodynamic foundations of the proposed model, and we document the role of thermodynamics in obtaining critical structural relations between the quantities of interest. These structural relations are then exploite…
Under the action of a time-periodic external forces we prove the existence of at least one time-periodic weak solution for the interaction between a three-dimensional incompressible fluid, governed by the Navier- Stokes equation and a two dimensional elastic plate. The challenge is that the Eulerian domain for the fluid changes in time and is a part of the solution. We introduce a two fixed-point methodology: First we construct a time-periodic solutions for a given variable time-periodic geometry. Then in a second step a (set-valued) fixed point is performed w.r.t.\ the geometry of the domain.…
The dynamics of a membrane is a coupled system comprising a moving elastic surface and an incompressible membrane fluid. We will consider a reduced elastic surface model, which involves the evolution equations of the moving surface, the dynamic equations of the two-dimensional fluid, and the incompressible equation, all of which operate within a curved geometry. In this paper, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the reduced elastic surface model by reformulating the model into a new system in the isothermal coordinates. One major difficulty is that of constructing an…
We consider a nonlinear, free boundary fluid-structure interaction model in a bounded domain. The viscous incompressible fluid interacts with a nonlinear elastic body on the common boundary via the velocity and stress matching conditions. The motion of the fluid is governed by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations while the displacement of elastic structure is determined by a nonlinear elastodynamic system with boundary dissipation. The boundary dissipation is inserted in the velocity matching condition. We prove the global existence of the smooth solutions for small initial data and obtain t…
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for a nonlinear elastic wave equation which was studied in [de Hoop, Uhlmann, Wang. Math. Ann. (2019) doi:10.1007/s00208-018-01796-y]. We show that all the parameters appearing in the equation can be uniquely determined from boundary measurements under certain geometric assumptions. The proof is based on second order linearization and Gaussian beams.
In this paper we consider nonlinearly elastic, frame-indifferent, and singularly perturbed two-well models for materials undergoing solid-solid phase transitions in any space dimensions, and we perform a simultaneous passage to sharp-interface and small-strain limits. Sequences of deformations with equibounded energies are decomposed via suitable Caccioppoli partitions into the sum of piecewise constant rigid movements and suitably rescaled displacements. These converge to limiting partitions, deformations, and displacements, respectively. Whereas limiting deformations are simple laminates who…
A new concept of semi-compressible fluids is introduced for slightly compressible visco-elastic fluids (typically rather liquids than gasses) where mass density variations are negligible in some sense, while being directly controlled by pressure which is very small in comparison with the elastic bulk modulus. The physically consistent fully Eulerian models with specific dispersion of pressure-wave speed are devised. This contrasts to the so-called quasi-incompressible fluids which are described not physically consistently and, in fact, only approximate ideally incompressible ones in the limit.…
We investigate the nonlinear instability of a smooth steady density profile solution of the threedimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of a uniform gravitational field, including a Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solution with heavier density with increasing height (referred to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability). We first analyze the equations obtained from linearization around the steady density profile solution. Then we construct solutions of the linearized problem that grow in time in the Sobolev space Hk, thus leading to a global instability result fo…
The Johnson--Kendall--Roberts model of frictionless adhesive contact is extended to the case of a thin transversely isotropic elastic layer bonded to a rigid base. The leading-order asymptotic models are obtained for both compressible and incompressible elastic layers. The boundary conditions for the contact pressure approximation on the contour of the contact area have been derived from the boundary-layer solutions, which satisfy the condition that the stress intensity factor of the contact pressure density should have the same value all round the contact area boundary. In the incompressible …
We study a nonlinear, unsteady, moving boundary, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem arising in modeling blood flow through elastic and viscoelastic arteries. The fluid flow, which is driven by the time-dependent pressure data, is governed by 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while the elastodynamics of the cylindrical wall is modeled by the 1D cylindrical Koiter shell model. Two cases are considered: the linearly viscoelastic and the linearly elastic Koiter shell. The fluid and structure are fully coupled (2-way coupling) via the kinematic and dynamic lateral boundary condition…
This paper is a first step in the study of the so-called Taylor model, introduced by J.B. Taylor in \cite{Taylor}. This system of nonlinear PDE's is derived from the viscous incompressible MHD equations, through an asymptotics relevant to the Earth's magnetic field. We consider here a simple class of linearizations of the Taylor model, for which we show well-posedness.
We explore the behaviour of global-in-time weak solutions to a class of bead-spring chain models, with finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) spring potentials, for dilute polymeric fluids. In the models under consideration the solvent is assumed to be a compressible, isentropic, viscous, isothermal Newtonian fluid, confined to a bounded open domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the velocity field is assumed to satisfy a complete slip boundary condition. We show that as the Mach number tends to zero the system is driven to its incompressible counterpart.
We consider 3D free-boundary compressible elastodynamic system under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition. It describes the motion of an isentropic inviscid elastic medium with moving boundary. The deformation tensor satisfies the neo-Hookean linear elasticity. The local well-posedness was proved by Trakhinin [84] by Nash-Moser iteration. In this paper, we give a new proof of the local well-posedness by the combination of classical energy method and hyperbolic approach and also establish the incompressible limit. We apply the tangential smoothing method to define the approximation system. The ke…
We cope with a free boundary fluid-structure interaction model. In the model, the viscous incompressible fluid interacts with elastic body via the common boundary. The motion of the fluid is governed by Navier-Stokes equations while the displacement of elastic structure is described by variable coefficient wave equations. The dissipation is placed on the common boundary between fluid and elastic body. Given small initial data, the global existence of the solutions of this system is proved and the exponential decay of solutions are obtained.
We study a moving boundary value problem consisting of a viscous incompressible fluid moving and interacting with a nonlinear elastic solid shell. The fluid motion is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, while the shell is modeled by the nonlinear Koiter shell model, consisting of both bending and membrane tractions. The fluid is coupled to the solid shell through continuity of displacements and tractions (stresses) along the moving material interface. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces.
We study the local controllability properties of 2D and 3D bio-mimetic swimmers employing the change of their geometric shape to propel themselves in an incompressible fluid described by Navier-Stokes equations. It is assumed that swimmers' bodies consist of finitely many parts, identified with the fluid they occupy, that are subsequently linked by the rotational and elastic internal forces. These forces are explicitly described and serve as the means to affect the geometric configuration of swimmers' bodies. Similar models were previously investigated in [6]-[13].
We study compressible and incompressible nonlinear elasticity variational problems in a general context. Our main result gives a sufficient condition for an equilibrium to be a global energy minimizer, in terms of convexity properties of the pressure in the deformed configuration. We also provide a convex relaxation of the problem together with its dual formulation, based on measure-valued mappings, which coincides with the original problem under our condition.
