The linearized collision operator of the Boltzmann equation for single species can be written as a sum of a positive multiplication operator, the collision frequency, and a compact integral operator. This classical result has more recently, been extended to multi-component mixtures and polyatomic single species with the polyatomicity modeled by a discrete internal energy variable. In this work we prove compactness of the integral operator for polyatomic single species, with the polyatomicity modeled by a continuous internal energy variable, and the number of internal degrees of freedom greater or equal to two. The terms of the integral operator are shown to be, or be the uniform limit of, Hilbert-Schmidt integral operators. Self-adjointness of the linearized collision operator follows. Coercivity of the collision frequency are shown for hard-sphere like and hard potential with cut-off like models, implying Fredholmness of the linearized collision operator.
In the following work, we consider the Boltzmann equation that models a polyatomic gas by representing the microscopic internal energy by a continuous variable I. Under some convenient assumptions on the collision cross-section $\mathcal{B}$, we prove that the linearized Boltzmann operator $\mathcal{L}$ of this model is a Fredholm operator. For this, we write $\mathcal{L}$ as a perturbation of the collision frequency multiplication operator, and we prove that the perturbation operator $\mathcal{K}$ is compact. The result is established after inspecting the kernel form of $\mathcal{K}$ and prov…
The linearized collision operator of the Boltzmann equation can in a natural way be written as a sum of a positive multiplication operator, the collision frequency, and an integral operator. Compactness of the integral operator for monatomic single species is a classical result, while corresponding result for mixtures is more recently obtained. In this work the compactness of the operator for polyatomic single species, where the polyatomicity is modeled by a discrete internal energy variable, is studied. With a probabilistic formulation of the collision operator as a starting point, compactnes…
We consider the global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions to the ellipsoidal BGK model for polyatomic molecules when the initial data starts sufficiently close to a global polyatomic Maxwellian. We observe that the linearized relaxation operator is decomposed into a trully polyatomic part and a essentially monatomic part, leading to a dichotomy in the dissipative property in the sense that the degeneracy of the dissipation shows an abrupt jump as the relaxation parameter $θ$ reaches zero. Accordingly, we employ two different sets of micro-macro system to derive the full c…
We consider the socalled Bathnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model, an approximation of the Boltzmann equation, describing the time evolution of a single momoatomic rarefied gas and satisfying the same two main properties (conservation properties and entropy inequality). However, in practical applications one often has to deal with two additional physical issues. First, a gas often does not consist of only one species, but it consists of mixture a mixture of different species. Second, the particles can store energy not only in translational degrees of freedom but also in internal degrees of freedom li…
We present recent results [4, 28, 29] about the quantitative study of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator, and its application to the study of the trend to equilibrium for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard spheres.
In this article we provide global subelliptic estimates for the linearized inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff, and show that some global gain in the spatial direction is available although the corresponding operator is not elliptic in this direction. The proof is based on a multiplier method and the so-called Wick quantization, together with a careful analysis of the symbolic properties of the Weyl symbol of the Boltzmann collision operator.
A new coercivity estimate on the spectral gap of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator for multiple species is proved. The assumptions on the collision kernels include hard and Maxwellian potentials under Grad's angular cut-off condition. Two proofs are given: a non-constructive one, based on the decomposition of the collision operator into a compact and a coercive part, and a constructive one, which exploits the "cross-effects" coming from collisions between different species and which yields explicit constants. Furthermore, the essential spectra of the linearized collision operator and…
We investigate the regularity issue for the diffuse reflection boundary problem to the stationary linearized Boltzmann equation for hard sphere potential, cutoff hard potential, or cutoff Maxwellian molecular gases in a strictly convex bounded domain. We obtain pointwise estimates for first derivatives of the solution provided the boundary temperature is bounded differentiable and the solution is bounded. This result can be understood as a stationary version of the velocity averaging lemma and mixture lemma.
We consider the regularity of stationary solutions to the linearized Boltzmann equations in bounded $C^1$ convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for gases with cutoff hard potential and cutoff Maxwellian gases. We prove that the stationary solutions solutions are Hölder continuous with order $\frac1{2}^-$ away from the boundary provided the incoming data have the same regularity. The key idea is to partially transfer the regularity in velocity obtained by collision to space through transport and collision.
The quantum Boltzmann-Bose equation describes a large system of Bose-Einstein particles in the weak-coupling regime. If the particle interaction is governed by the inverse power law, the corresponding collision kernel has angular singularity. In this paper, we give a constructive proof of the coercivity estimate for the linearized quantum Boltzmann-Bose operator to capture the effects of the singularity and the fugacity. Precisely, the estimate explicitly reveals the dependence on the fugacity parameter before the Bose-Einstein condensation. With the coercivity estimate, the global in time wel…
We give quantitative estimates on the asymptotics of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator and its associated equation from angular cutoff to non cutoff. On one hand, the results disclose the link between the hyperbolic property resulting from the Grad's cutoff assumption and the smoothing property due to the long-range interaction. On the other hand, with the help of the localization techniques in the phase space, we observe some new phenomenon in the asymptotic limit process. As a consequence, we give the affirmative answer to the question that there is no jump for the property that th…
This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. The non-cutoff theory for the relativistic Boltzmann equation has been rarely studied even under a smallness assumption on the initial data due to the lack of understanding of the spectrum and the need for coercivity estimates on the linearized collision operator. Namely, it is crucial to obtain the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier to obtain this coercivity that has never been established before. In this paper, we prove the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier for a general relativi…
The aim of this paper is to extend to the spaces L^2(R^d , (1+|v|)^2k dv) the spectral study led in L^2(R^d , exp(|v|^2/2)dv) by R. Ellis and M. Pinsky on the space inhomogeneous linearized Boltzmann operator for hard spheres. More precisely, we look at the Fourier transform in the space variable of the inhomogeneous operator and consider the dual Fourier variable as a fixed parameter. We then perform a precise study of this operator for small frequencies (by seeing it as a perturbation of the homogeneous one) and also for large frequencies from spectral and semigroup point of views. Our appro…
We study the quantitative pointwise behavior of the solutions of the linearized Boltzmann equation for hard potentials, Maxwellian molecules and soft potentials, with Grad's angular cutoff assumption. More precisely, for solutions inside the finite Mach number region, we obtain the pointwise fluid structure for hard potentials and Maxwellian molecules, and optimal time decay in the fluid part and sub-exponential time decay in the non-fluid part for soft potentials. For solutions outside the finite Mach number region, we obtain sub-exponential decay in the space variable. The singular wave esti…
The Landau equation and the Boltzmann equation are connected through the limit of grazing collisions. This has been proved rigorously for certain families of Boltzmann operators concentrating on grazing collisions. In this contribution, we study the collision kernels associated to the two-particle scattering via a finite range potential $Φ(x)$ in three dimensions. We then consider the limit of weak interaction given by $Φ_ε(x) = εΦ(x)$. Here $ε\rightarrow 0$ is the grazing parameter, and the rate of collisions is rescaled to obtain a non-trivial limit. The grazing collisions limit is of partic…
In this paper, we find that the linearized collision operator $L$ of the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with soft potential generates a strongly continuous semigroup on $H^k_n$, with $k,n\in\mathbb{R}$. In the theory of Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff, the weighted Sobolev space plays a fundamental role. The proof is based on pseudo-differential calculus and in general, for a specific class of Weyl quantization, the $L^2$ dissipation implies $H^k_n$ dissipation. This kind of estimate is also known as the Gårding's inequality.
In many works, the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator is considered to behave essentially as a fractional Laplacian. In the present work, we prove that the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator with Maxwellian molecules is exactly equal to a fractional power of the linearized Landau operator which is the sum of the harmonic oscillator and the spherical Laplacian. This result allows to display explicit sharp coercive estimates satisfied by the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator for both Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian molecules.
It is known that in the parameters range $-2 \leq γ<-2s$ spectral gap does not exist for the linearized Boltzmann operator without cutoff but it does for the linearized Landau operator. This paper is devoted to the understanding of the formation of spectral gap in this range through the grazing limit. Precisely, we study the Cauchy problems of these two classical collisional kinetic equations around global Maxwellians in torus and establish the following results that are uniform in the vanishing grazing parameter $ε$: (i) spectral gap type estimates for the collision operators; (ii) global exi…
The spectrum structure of the linearized relativistic Boltzmann equation around a global Maxwellian is studied in this paper. Based on the spectrum analysis, we establish the optimal time-convergence rates of the global solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation.
We prove explicit coercivity estimates for the linearized Boltzmann and Landau operators, for a general class of interactions including any inverse-power law interactions, and hard spheres. The functional spaces of these coercivity estimates depend on the collision kernel of these operators. They cover the spectral gap estimates for the linearized Boltzmann operator with Maxwell molecules, improve these estimates for hard potentials, and are the first explicit coercivity estimates for soft potentials (including in particular the case of Coulombian interactions). We also prove a regularity prop…
It is known that the singularity in the non-cutoff cross-section of the Boltzmann equation leads to the gain of regularity and gain of weight in the velocity variable. By defining and analyzing a non-isotropy norm which precisely captures the dissipation in the linearized collision operator, we first give a new and precise coercivity estimate for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for general physical cross sections. Then the Cauchy problem for the Boltzmann equation is considered in the framework of small perturbation of an equilibrium state. In this part, for the soft potential case in the se…
The Boltzmann equation without an angular cutoff is considered when the initial data is a small perturbation of a global Maxwellian with an algebraic decay in the velocity variable. A well-posedness theory in the perturbative framework is obtained for both mild and strong angular singularities by combining three ingredients: the moment propagation, the spectral gap of the linearized operator, and the regularizing effect of the linearized operator when the initial data is in a Sobolev space with a negative index. A carefully designed pseudo-differential operator plays an central role in capturi…
This paper deals with explicit spectral gap estimates for the linearized Boltzmann operator with hard potentials (and hard spheres). We prove that it can be reduced to the Maxwellian case, for which explicit estimates are already known. Such a method is constructive, does not rely on Weyl's Theorem and thus does not require Grad's splitting. The more physical idea of the proof is to use geometrical properties of the whole collision operator. In a second part, we use the fact that the Landau operator can be expressed as the limit of the Boltzmann operator as collisions become grazing in order t…
We consider an approximation of the linearised equation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation that describes the distribution of quasiparticles in a dilute gas of bosons at low temperature. The corresponding collision frequency is neither bounded from below nor from above. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions satisfying the conservation of energy. We show that these solutions converge to the corresponding stationary state, at an algebraic rate as time tends to infinity.
We study space-time fluctuations of a hard sphere system at thermal equilibrium, and prove that the covariance converges to the solution of a linearized Boltzmann equation in the low density limit, globally in time. This result has been obtained previously in [7], by using uniform bounds on the number of recollisions of dispersing systems of hard spheres (as provided for instance in [9]). We present a self-contained proof with substantial differences, which does not use this geometric result. This can be regarded as the first step of a program aiming to derive the fluctuation theory of the rar…
In this paper, we consider the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation around an homogeneous Maxwellian equilibrium in a weakly collisional regime: there is a parameter $\eps$ in front of the collision operator which will tend to $0$. Moreover, we study two cases of collision operators, linear Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck. We prove a result of Landau damping for those equations in Sobolev spaces uniformly with respect to the collision parameter $\eps$ as it goes to $0$.
We derive lower bounds on the resolvent operator for the linearized steady Boltzmann equation over weighted L1 Banach spaces in velocity, comparable to those derived by Pogan & Zumbrun in an analogous weighted L2 Hilbert space setting. These show in particular that the operator norm of the resolvent kernel is unbounded in Lp(R) for all $1<p \leq \infty$, resolving an apparent discrepancy in behavior between the two settings suggested by previous work.
In this work, we are interested in the spectrum of the diffusively excited granular gases equation, in a space inhomogeneous setting, linearized around an homogeneous equilibrium. We perform a study which generalizes to a non-hilbertian setting and to the inelastic case the seminal work of Ellis and Pinsky about the spectrum of the linearized Boltzmann operator. We first give a precise localization of the spectrum, which consists in an essential part lying on the left of the imaginary axis and a discrete spectrum, which is also of nonnegative real part for small values of the inelasticity para…
We consider the Boltzmann operator for mixtures with cutoff Maxwellian, hard potentials, or hard spheres collision kernels. In a perturbative regime around the global Maxwellian equilibrium, the linearized Boltzmann multi-species operator $\mathbf{L}$ is known to possess an explicit spectral gap $λ_{\mathbf{L}}$, in the global equilibrium weighted $L^2$ space. We study a new operator $\mathbf{L^\varepsilon}$ obtained by linearizing the Boltzmann operator for mixtures around local Maxwellian distributions, where all the species evolve with different small macroscopic velocities of order $\varep…
In this paper, we consider the spatially inhomogeneous diffusively driven inelastic Boltzmann equation in different cases: the restitution coefficient can be constant or can depend on the impact velocity (which is a more physically relevant case), including in particular the case of viscoelastic hard spheres. In the weak thermalization regime, i.e. when the diffusion parameter is sufficiently small, we prove existence of global solutions considering the close-to-equilibrium regime as well as the weakly inhomogeneous regime in the case of a constant restitution coefficient. It is the very first…
In this paper we prove new constructive coercivity estimates for the Boltzmann collision operator without cutoff, that is for long-range interactions. In particular we give a generalized sufficient condition for the existence of a spectral gap which involves both the growth behavior of the collision kernel at large relative velocities and its singular behavior at grazing and frontal collisions. It provides in particular existence of a spectral gap and estimates on it for interactions deriving from the hard potentials $ϕ(r) = r^{-(s−1)}$, $s \ge 5$ or the so-called moderately soft potenti…
In this article we study the Gevrey regularization effect for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. This equation is partially elliptic in the velocity direction and degenerates in the spatial variable. We consider the nonlinear Cauchy problem for the fluctuation around the Maxwellian distribution and prove that any solution with mild regularity will become smooth in Gevrey class at positive time, with Gevrey index depending on the angular singularity. Our proof relies on the symbolic calculus for the collision operator and the global subelliptic estimate for t…
The aim of the work is to provide a stable method to get sharp bounds for Boltzmann and Landau operators in weighted Sobolev spaces and in anisotropic spaces. All the sharp bounds are given for the original Boltzmann and Landau operators. The sharpness means the lower and upper bounds for the operators are consistent with the behavior of the linearized operators. Moreover, we make clear the difference between the bounds for the original operators and those for the linearized ones. According to the Bobylev's formula, we introduce two types of dyadic decompositions performed in both phase and fr…
Boundary effects are central to the dynamics of the dilute particles governed by Boltzmann equation. In this paper, we study both the diffuse reflection and the specular reflection boundary value problems for Boltzmann equation with soft potential, in which the collision kernel is ruled by the inverse power law. For the diffuse reflection boundary condition, based on an $L^2$ argument and its interplay with intricate $L^\infty$ analysis for the linearized Boltzmann equation, we first establish the global existence and then obtain the exponential decay in $L^\infty$ space for the nonlinear Bolt…
We prove the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions around an equilibrium to the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff in some Sobolev spaces. In addition, the solutions thus obtained are shown to be non-negative and $C^\infty$ in all variables for any positive time. In this paper, we study the Maxwellian molecule type collision operator with mild singularity. One of the key observations is the introduction of a new important norm related to the singular behavior of the cross section in the collision operator. This norm captures the essential properties of the singularity a…
The non-cutoff Kac operator is a kinetic model for the non-cutoff radially symmetric Boltzmann operator. For Maxwellian molecules, the linearization of the non-cutoff Kac operator around a Maxwellian distribution is shown to be a function of the harmonic oscillator, to be diagonal in the Hermite basis and to be essentially a fractional power of the harmonic oscillator. This linearized operator is a pseudodifferential operator, and we provide a complete asymptotic expansion for its symbol in a class enjoying a nice symbolic calculus. Related results for the linearized non-cutoff radially symmet…
