A one-way wave equation is an evolution equation in one of the space directions that describes (approximately) a wave field. The exact wave field is approximated in a high frequency, microlocal sense. Here we derive the pseudodifferential one-way wave equation for an inhomogeneous acoustic medium using a known factorization argument. We give explicitly the two highest order terms, that are necessary for approximating the solution. A wave front (singularity) whose propagation velocity has non-zero component in the special direction is correctly described. The equation can't describe singularities propagating along turning rays, i.e. rays along which the velocity component in the special direction changes sign. We show that incorrectly propagated singularities are suppressed if a suitable dissipative term is added to the equation.
Some results of microlocal continuity for pseudodifferential operators whose non regular symbols belong to weighted Fourier Lebesgue spaces are given. Inhomogeneous local and microlocal propagation of singularities of Fourier Lebesgue type are then studied, with applications to some classes of semilinear equations.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with $L^2$-critical exponent and an inhomogeneous damping term. By using the tools developed by Merle and Raphael, we prove the existence of blowup phenomena in the energy space $H^1(\mathbb{R})$.
We consider the $L^2$-critical nonlinear Schrodinger equation with an inhomogeneous damping term. We prove that there exists an initial data such that the corresponding solution is global in $H^1(R^d)$ and we give the minimal time of the blow up for some initial data.
We consider the Klein-Gordon system posed in an inhomogeneous medium with smooth boundary subject to a local viscoelastic damping distributed around a neighborhoodof the boundary according to the Geometric Control Condition. We show that the energy of the system goes uniformly and exponentially to zero for all initial data of finite energy taken in bounded sets of finite energy phase-space. For this purpose, refined microlocal analysis arguments are considered by exploiting ideas due to Burq and Gerard . By using sharp Carleman estimates we prove a unique continuation property for coupled syst…
We prove the asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the Couette flow for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, if the initial velocity is close to the Couette flow and the initial density is close to a positive constant in the Gevrey class 2, then 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations are globally well-posed and the velocity converges strongly to a shear flow close to the Couette flow, and the vorticity will be driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t\to \infty$. To our knowledge, t…
We consider the model equations for the Timoshenko beam as a first order system in the framework of evolutionary equations. The focus is on boundary damping, which is implemented as a dynamic boundary condition. A change of material laws allows to include a large class of cases of boundary damping. By choosing a particular material law, it is shown that the first order approach to Sturm-Liouville problems with boundary damping is also covered.
We study the dynamics of perturbations around an inhomogeneous stationary state of the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) model, satisfying a linearized stability criterion (Penrose criterion). We consider solutions of the linearized equation around the steady state, and prove the algebraic decay in time of the Fourier modes of their density. We prove moreover that these solutions exhibit a scattering behavior to a modified state, implying a linear Landau damping effect with an algebraic rate of damping.
Global existence for small data Cauchy problem of semilinear wave equations with scaling invariant damping in 3-D is established in this work, assuming that the data are radial and the constant in front of the damping belongs to $[1.5, 2)$. The proof is based on a weighted $L^2-L^2$ estimate for inhomogeneous wave equation, which is established by interpolating between energy estimate and Morawetz type estimate.
Decay rates for the energy of solutions of the damped wave equation on the torus are studied. In particular, damping invariant in one direction and equal to a sum of squares of nonnegative functions with a particular number of derivatives of regularity is considered. For such damping energy decays at rate $1/t^{2/3}$. If additional regularity is assumed the decay rate improves. When such a damping is smooth the energy decays at $1/t^{4/5-δ}$. The proof uses a positive commutator argument and relies on a pseudodifferential calculus for low regularity symbols.
This paper is devoted to derive integral representation formulae for the solution of an inhomogeneous linear wave equation with time-dependent damping and mass terms, that are scale-invariant with respect to the so-called hyperbolic scaling. Yagdjian's integral transform approach is employed for this purpose. The main step in our argument consists in determining the kernel functions for the different integral terms, which are related to the source term and to initial data. We will start with the one dimensional case (in space). We point out that we may not apply in a straightforward way Duhame…
Seismic data are commonly modeled by a high-frequency single scattering approximation. This amounts to a linearization in the medium coefficient about a smooth background. The discontinuities are contained in the medium perturbation. The wave solutions in the background medium admit a geometrical optics representation. Here we describe the wave propagation in the background medium by a one-way wave equation. Based on this we derive the double-square-root equation, which is a first order pseudodifferential equation, that describes the continuation of seismic data in depth. We consider the model…
The main objective of this paper is to study the time decay of transport-diffusion equation with inhomogeneous localized damping in the multi-dimensional torus. The drift is governed by an autonomous Lipschitz vector field and the diffusion by the standard heat equation with small viscosity parameter $ν$. In the first part we deal with the inviscid case and show some results on the time decay of the energy using in a crucial way the ergodicity and the unique ergodicity of the flow generated by the drift. In the second part we analyze the same problem with small viscosity and provide quite simi…
{\bf Abstract} \,\,We prove exponential decay of the critical and subcritical semilinear inhomogeneous and anisotropic elastic wave equation with locally distributed damping on bounded domain. One novelty compared to previous results, is to give a checkable condition of the inhomogeneous and anisotropic medias. Another novelty is to establish a framework to study the stability of the damped semilinear inhomogeneous and anisotropic elastic wave equation, which is hard to apply Carleman estimates to deal with. We develop the Morawetz estimates and the compactness-uniqueness arguments for the sem…
In this article, we study energy decay of the damped wave equation on compact Riemannian manifolds where the damping coefficient is anisotropic and modeled by a pseudodifferential operator of order zero. We prove that the energy of solutions decays at an exponential rate if and only if the damping coefficient satisfies an anisotropic analogue of the classical geometric control condition, along with a unique continuation hypothesis. Furthermore, we compute an explicit formula for the optimal decay rate in terms of the spectral abscissa and the long-time averages of the principal symbol of the d…

In case of a spin-polarized current, the magnetization dynamics in nanowires are governed by the classical Landau-Lifschitz equation with Gilbert damping term, augmented by a typically non-variational Slonczewski term. Taking axial symmetry into account, we study the existence of domain wall type coherent structure solutions, with focus on one space dimension and spin-polarization, but our results also apply to vanishing spin-torque term. Using methods from bifurcation theory for arbitrary constant applied fields, we prove the existence of domain walls with non-trivial azimuthal profile, refer…
It is still an open problem whether the inhibition phenomenon of Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) instability by horizontal magnetic field can be mathematically proved in a non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluid in a two-dimensional (2D) horizontal slab domain, since it had been roughly verified by a 2D linearized motion equations in 2012 \cite{WYC}. In this paper, we find that this inhibition phenomenon can be rigorously verified in the inhomogeneous, incompressible, inviscid case with velocity damping. More precisely, there exists a critical number $m_{\rm{C}}$ such that if the strength $|m|$ of…
In this work we establish a weighted $L^2-L^2$ estimate for inhomogeneous wave equation in 3-D, by introducing a Morawetz multiplier with weight of power $s(1<s<2)$, and then integrating on the light cones and $t$ slice. With this weighted $L^2-L^2$ estimate in hand, we may give a new proof of global existence for small data Cauchy problem of semilinear wave equation with supercritical power in 3-D. What is more, by combining the Huygens' principle for wave equations in 3-D, the global existence for semilinear wave equation with scale invariant damping in 3-D is established.
