The goal of this paper is to give a method to compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of a double cover of a smooth algebraic variety. The space of all infinitesimal deformations has a representation as a direct sum of two subspaces. One is isomorphic to the space of simultaneous deformations of the branch locus and the base of the double covering. The second summand is the subspace of deformations of the double covering which induce trivial deformations of the branch divisor. The main result of the paper is a description of the effect of imposing singularities in the branch locus.
As a special case we study deformations of Calabi--Yau threefolds which are non--singular models of double cover of the projective 3--space branched along an octic surface. We show that in that case the number of deformations can be computed explicitly using computer algebra systems. This gives a method to compute the Hodge numbers of these Calabi--Yau manifolds. In this case the transverse deformations are resolutions of deformations of double covers of projective space but not double covers of a blow--up of projective space. In the paper we gave many explicit examples.
We give an effective infinitesimal Torelli theorem for cyclic covers of G/P, where G is a simple algebraic group and P is a maximal parabolic subgroup.
In this work, we extend the concept of the double of an ideal defined in \cite{G2}, to the context of modules. We also obtain the genericity of the infinitesimal Lipschitz condition A for an enlarged class of analytic spaces.
The purpose of this article is to show that the Castelnuovo theory for abelian varieties, developed by G. Pareschi and M. Popa, can be infinitesimalized. More precisely, we prove that an irreducible principally polarized abelian variety has a finite scheme in extremal position, in the sense of Castelnuovo theory for abelian varieties, if, and only if, it is a Jacobian and the scheme is contained in a unique Abel-Jacobi curve.
Given a compact Kähler manifold, the Infinitesimal Torelli problem asks whether the differential of the period map of a Kuranishi family is injective. Unlike the classical Torelli theorem for curves, there is a negative answer for example for hyperelliptic curves of genus greater than $2$. Nevertheless the Infinitesimal Torelli Theorem holds for many other classes of manifolds. We will prove it for smooth hypersurfaces in simple abelian varieties with sufficiently high self-intersection giving an effective bound on a result by Green in this particular case.
This paper is a work in progress on Bloch's conjecture asserting the vanishing of the Pontryagin product of a $ p $ codimensional cycle on an abelian variety by $ p+1 $ zero cycles of degree zero. We prove an infinitesimal version of the conjecture and we discuss, in particular, the case of $ 3 $ dimensional cycles.
We solve the infinitesimal Torelli problem for $3$-dimensional quasi-smooth ${\mathbb{Q}}$-Fano hypersurfaces with at worst terminal singularities. We also find infinite chains of double coverings of increasing dimension which alternatively distribute themselves in examples and counterexamples for the infinitesimal Torelli claim and which share the analogue, and in some cases the same, Hodge-diagram properties as the length $3$ Gushel-Mukai chain of prime smooth Fanos of coindex $3$ and degree $10$.
We study the equivalence between infinitesimal Torelli theorem for smooth hypersurfaces in rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number one and the theory of generalized Massey products. This equivalence shows that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain twisted differential forms are elements of the Jacobian ideal of the hypersurface. We also prove an infinitesimal Torelli theorem result for smooth hypersurfaces in log parallelizable varieties.
Let k be a field of positive characteristic. We construct, for each dominant coweight λof the standard maximal torus in the special linear group, a closed subvariety D(λ) of the multigraded Hilbert scheme of an affine space over k, such that the k-valued points of D(λ) can be interpreted as lattices in k((z))^n endowed with infinitesimal structure. Moreover, for any λwe construct a universal homeomorphism from D(λ) to a Demazure resolution of the Schubert variety associated with λin the affine Grassmannian. Lattices in D(λ) have non-trivial infinitesimal structure if and only if they lie over …
We (1) characterize the Schubert varieties that arise as variations of Hodge structure (VHS); (2) show that the isotropy orbits of the infinitesimal Schubert VHS `span' the space of all infinitesimal VHS; and (3) show that the cohomology classes dual the Schubert VHS form a basis of the invariant characteristic cohomology associated to the infinitesimal period relation (a.k.a. Griffiths transversality).
In this article, we investigate deformations of a Calabi-Yau manifold $Z$ in a toric variety $F$, possibly not smooth. In particular, we prove that the forgetful morphism from the Hilbert functor $H^F_Z$ of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ in $F$ to the functor of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ is smooth. This implies the smoothness of $H^F_Z $ at the corresponding point in the Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we give some examples and include some computations on the Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds in Fano toric varieties.

In this paper we introduce some {\it variation functions} associated to the rank of the Infinitesimal Variations of Hodge Structure for a family of smooth projective complex curves. We give some bounds and inequalities and, in particular, we prove that if $X$ is a smooth plane curve $X$, then there exists a first order deformation $ξ\in H^1(T_X)$ which deforms $X$ as plane curve, such that $ξ\cdot:H^0(ω_X)\to H^1(\mathcal{O}_{X})$ is an isomorphism. We also generalize the notions of variation functions to the higher dimensional case and we analyze the link between IVHS and the Weak and Strong …
It is conjectured by de Jong that, if $X$ is a connected smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with trivial étale fundamental group, any isocrystal on on $X/W$ is trivial. We prove this conjecture under two additional assumptions. Version 2: the main change is an addendum. We prove that if $X$ is a connected smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with trivial étale fundamental group, any infinitesimal isocrystal on $X/W$ is trivial. To this aim we wrote some general facts on such infinitesimal …
We prove that the infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure arising in a number of geometric situations are non-generic. In particular, we consider the case of generic hypersurfaces in complete smooth projective toric varieties, generic hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces and generic complete intersections in projective space and show that, for sufficiently high degrees, the corresponding infinitesimal variations are non-generic.
It is shown that an irreducible cubic hypersurface with nonzero Hessian and smooth singular locus is the secant variety of a Severi variety if and only if its Lie algebra of infinitesimal linear automorphisms admits a nonzero prolongation.
Let $X$ be a 3-dimensional affine variety with a faithful action of a 2-dimensional torus $T$. Then the space of first order infinitesimal deformations $T^1(X)$ is graded by the characters of $T$, and the zeroth graded component $T^1(X)_0$ consists of all equivariant first order (infinitesimal) deformations. Suppose that using the construction of such varieties from [1], one can obtain $X$ from a proper polyhedral divisor $\mathscr D$ on $\mathbb P^1$ such that the tail cone of (any of) the used polyhedra is pointed and full-dimensional, and all vertices of all polyhedra are lattice points. Th…
We give several results concerning the connected component ${\rm Aut}_X^0$ of the automorphism scheme of a proper variety $X$ over a field, such as its behaviour with respect to birational modifications, normalization, restrictions to closed subschemes and deformations. Then, we apply our results to study the automorphism scheme of not necessarily Jacobian elliptic surfaces $f: X \to C$ over algebraically closed fields, generalizing work of Rudakov and Shafarevich, while giving counterexamples to some of their statements. We bound the dimension $h^0(X,T_X)$ of the space of global vector fields…
We examine the tangent groups at the identity, and more generally the formal completions at the identity, of the Chow groups of algebraic cycles on a nonsingular quasiprojective algebraic variety over a field of characteristic zero. We settle a question recently raised by Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths concerning the existence of Bloch-Gersten-Quillen-type resolutions of algebraic K-theory sheaves on infinitesimal thickenings of nonsingular varieties, and the relationships between these sequences and their "tangent sequences," expressed in terms of absolute Kähler differentials. More general…
We prove a full generalization of the Castelnuovo's free pencil trick. We show its analogies with the Adjoint Theorem; see L. Rizzi, F. Zucconi, Differential forms and quadrics of the canonical image, arXiv:1409.1826 and also Theorem 1.5.1 in G. P. Pirola, F. Zucconi, Variations of the Albanese morphisms, J. Algebraic Geom. 12 (2003), no. 3, 535-572. Moreover we find a new formulation of the Griffiths's infinitesimal Torelli Theorem for smooth projective hypersurfaces using meromorphic $1$-forms.
We generalized the construction of deformations of affine toric varieties of K. Altmann and our previous construction of deformations of weak Fano toric varieties to the case of arbitrary toric varieties by introducing the notion of Minkowski sum decompositions of polyhedral complexes. Our construction embeds the original toric variety into a higher dimensional toric variety where the image is given by a prime binomial complete intersection ideal in Cox homogeneous coordinates. The deformations are realized by families of complete intersections. For compact simplicial toric varieties with at w…
We show that infinitesimal Torelli for $n$-forms holds for abelian covers of algebraic varieties of dimension $n\ge 2$, under some explicit ampleness assumptions on the building data of the cover. Moreover, we prove a variational Torelli result for some families of abelian covers.
We show that the infinitesimal deformations of the Brill--Noether locus $W_d$ attached to a smooth non-hyperelliptic curve $C$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the deformations of $C$. As an application, we prove that if a Jacobian $J$ deforms together with a minimal cohomology class out the Jacobian locus, then $J$ is hyperelliptic. In particular, this provides an evidence to a conjecture of Debarre on the classification of ppavs carrying a minimal cohomology class. Finally, we also study simultaneous deformations of Fano surfaces of lines and intermediate Jacobians.
Extending the classical result that the roots of a polynomial with coefficients in $\mathbf{C}$ are continuous functions of the coefficients of the polynomial, nonstandard analysis is used to prove that if $\mathcal{F} = \{f_λ :λ\in Λ\}$ is a set of polynomials in $\mathbf{C}[t_1,\ldots, t_n]$ and if $^*\mathcal{G} = \{g_λ :λ\in Λ\}$ is a set of polynomials in $^*\mathbf{C}_0[t_1,\ldots, t_n]$ such that $g_λ$ is an infinitesimal deformation of $f_λ$ for all $λ\in Λ$, then the nonstandard affine variety $^*V_0(\mathcal{G})$ is an infinitesimal deformation of the affine variety $V(\mathcal{F})$.
We show that Albanese varieties of abelian covers of projective plane are isogenous to product of isogeny components of abelian varieties associated with singularities of the ramification locus. In particular Albanese varieties of abelian covers of projective plane ramified over arrangements of lines and uniformized by unit ball are isogenous to a product of Jacobians of Fermat curves. Periodicity of the sequence of (semi-abelian) Albanese varieties of unramified cyclic covers of complements to a plane singular curve is shown.
For a polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$, Z. Jiang and G. Pareschi introduce an invariant $β(X,L)$, called the basepoint-freeness threshold. Using this invariant, we show that a general polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$ of dimension $g$ is projectively normal if $χ(L) \geq 2^{2g-1}$ and the type of $L$ is not $(2,4,\dots,4)$. This bound is sharp since it is known that any polarized abelian variety of type $(2,4,\dots,4)$ is not projectively normal. We also give an application of $β(X,L)$ to the Infinitesimal Torelli Theorem for $Y \in |L|$.
We study a class of Calabi-Yau varieties that can be represented as a non-singular model of a double covering of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along certain octic surfaces. We compute Euler numbers of all constructed examples and describe their resolution of singularities.
We consider normal affine T-varieties X endowed with an action of finite abelian group G commuting with the action of T. For such varieties we establish the existence of G-equivariant geometrico-combinatorial presentations in the sense of Altmann and Hausen. As an application, we determine explicit presentations of the Koras-Russell threefolds as bi-cyclic covers of A^3 equipped with a hyperbolic C^*-action.
We construct examples to show that having nef cotangent bundle is not preserved under finite ramified covers. Our examples also show that a projective manifold with Stein universal cover may not have nef cotangent bundle, disproving a conjecture of Liu-Maxim-Wang.
We prove that the universal cover of a normal, projective variety X is quasi-projective if and only if a finite, étale cover of X is a fiber bundle over an Abelian variety with simply connected fiber.
In this paper, using a generalization of the notion of Prym variety for covers of quasi-projective varieties, we prove a structure theorem for the Mordell-Weil group of the abelian varieties over function fields that are twists of Abelian varieties by Galois covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. In particular, the resutls we obtain contribute in the construction of Jacobians (of covers of the projective line) of high rank.
We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map, sending a double covering of an elliptic curve ramified at r>4 points to its polarized Prym variety. For r=6 the map is birational.
We continue our study of the Noether-Lefschetz loci in toric varieties and investigate deformation of pairs (V,X) where V is a complete intersection subvariety and X a quasi-smooth hypersurface in a odd dimensional simplicial projective toric variety, with V\subset X. Under some assumptions, we prove that the cohomological class in H^{k,k}(X) associated to V remains of type (k,k) under an infinitesimal deformation if and only if V remains algebraic. Actually we prove that locally the Noether-Lefschetz locus is an irreducible component of a suitable Hilbert scheme. This generalizes Theorem 4.2 …
Let $f:X\to Y$ be a finite ramified Galois covering of algebraic varieties defined over the complex numbers. In this paper, we prove some structure theorems for such coverings in the case that the non-abelian Galois group of the cover is metabelian (in particular metacyclic). Our results extend the previous ones, obtained by several authors, in the case of abelian and dihedral Galois coverings. In analogy with the abelian (and generalizing the dihedral) case, we find "building data" of metabelian covers from which the cover can be reconstructed. In addition to analyzing several examples, we co…
We describe the isotypical decomposition of the Jacobian variety JW of the Galois extension W-->T of any fourfold cover of smooth connected irreducible projective complex curves X-->T, in terms of Prym's of intermediate covers. We also compute the degree of the isogenies involved and as a result we obtain new proofs of the bigonal and trigonal constructions. Furthermore, we give examples of families of Jacobians isogenous to a product of Jacobians and of families of Prym varieties isogenous to the product of elliptic curves.
This article contains a new argument which proves vanishing of the first cohomology for negative vector bundles over a complex projective variety if the rank of the bundle is smaller than the dimension of the base. Similar argument is applied to the construction of holomorphic functions on the universal covering of the complex projective variety .
To any pair of coverings $f_i: X \ra X_i, i = 1,2$ of smooth projective curves one can associate an abelian subvariety of the Jacobian $J_X$, the Prym variety $P(f_1,f_2)$ of the pair $(f_1,f_2)$. In some cases we can compute the type of the restriction of the canonical principal polarization of $JX$. We obtain 2 families of Prym-Tyurin varieties of exponent 6.
We show that the vector bundle associated to a smooth projective connected finite covering of a simple complex abelian variety is ample (under a simple necessary condition). This result is obtained by showing that this bundle is M-regular in the sense of Pareschi-Popa, and that any M-regular sheaf is ample.
It is well known that the Prym variety of an étale cyclic covering of a hyperelliptic curve is isogenous to the product of two Jacobians. Moreover, if the degree of the covering is odd or congruent to 2 mod 4, then the canonical isogeny is an isomorphism. We compute the degree of this isogeny in the remaining cases and show that only in the case of coverings of degree 4 it is an isomorphism.
We study families of linear spaces in projective space whose union is a proper subvariety X of the expected dimension. We establish relations between configurations of focal points and existence or non-existence of a fixed tangent space to X along a general element of the family. We apply our results to the classification of ruled 3-dimensional varieties.
In this paper we construct Shimura subvarieties of dimension bigger than one of the moduli space of polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension, which are generically contained in the Pym loci of (ramified) double covers. The idea is to adapt the techniques already used to construct Shimura curves in the Prym loci to the higher dimensional case, namely to use families of Galois covers of the projective line. The case of abelian covers is treated in detail, since in this case it is possible to make explicit computations that allow to verify a sufficient condition for such a family to yield…
We complete the study of birational geometry of Fano fiber spaces $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a Fano double hypersurface of index 1. For each family of these varieties we either prove birational rigidity or produce explicitly non-trivial structures of Fano fiber spaces. A new linear method of studying movable systems on Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$ is developed.
In this paper we prove that the Prym map, from the space of double coverings of a curve of genus g with r branch points to the moduli space of abelian varieties, is generically injective if r>6 and g>1, r=6 and g>2, r=4 and g>4, r=2 and g>5. We also show that a very generic Prym variety of dimension at least 4 is not isogenous to a Jacobian.
We prove that a general Fano fibration $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a double Fano hypersurface of index 1, is birationally superrigid provided it is sufficiently twisted over the base. In particular, on $V$ there are no other structures of a rationally connected fibration. The proof is based on the method of maximal singularities.
We prove that ribbons, i.e. double structures associated with a line bundle $\SE$ over its reduced support, a smooth irreducible projective curve of arbitrary genus, are smoothable if their arithmetic genus is greater than or equal to $3 $ and the support curve possesses a smooth irreducible double cover with trace zero module $\SE$. The method we use is based on the infinitesimal techniques that we develop to show that if the support curve admits such a double cover then every embedded ribbon over the curve is ``infinitesimally smoothable'', i.e. the ribbon can be obtained as central fiber of…
We continue to study birational geometry of Fano fibrations $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$ the fibers of which are Fano double hypersurfaces of index 1. For a majority of families of this type, which do not satisfy the condition of sufficient twistedness over the base, we prove birational rigidity (in particular, it means that there are no other structures of a fibration into rationally connected varieties) and compute their groups of birational self-maps. We considerably improve the principal components of the method of maximal singularities, in the first place, the technique of counting multip…
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
We consider deformations of singular Lagrangian varieties in symplectic spaces. We show the coherence of the direct image sheaves of relative infinitesimal Lagrangian deformations. Using this result, we prove that, under some assumptions, a Lagrangian deformation is analytically rigid provided that this is the case infinitesimally. This gives generalisations of recent results by Colin de Verdière concerning Lagrangian curves.
