We prove that ribbons, i.e. double structures associated with a line bundle $\SE$ over its reduced support, a smooth irreducible projective curve of arbitrary genus, are smoothable if their arithmetic genus is greater than or equal to $3 $ and the support curve possesses a smooth irreducible double cover with trace zero module $\SE$. The method we use is based on the infinitesimal techniques that we develop to show that if the support curve admits such a double cover then every embedded ribbon over the curve is ``infinitesimally smoothable'', i.e. the ribbon can be obtained as central fiber of the image of some first--order infinitesimal deformation of the map obtained by composing the double cover with the embedding of the reduced support in the ambient projective space containing the ribbon. We also obtain embeddings in the same projective space for all ribbons associated with $\SE$. Then, assuming the existence of the double cover, we prove that the ``infinitesimal smoothing'' can be extended to a global embedded smoothing for embedded ribbons of arithmetic genus greater than or equal to 3. As a consequence we obtain the smoothing results.
We describe explicitly all hyperelliptic limits of quadrics through smooth canonical curves of genus $g$ in ${\mathbb P}^{g-1}$. Also, we construct an open embedding of the blow up of a ${\rm PGL}_g$-bundle over the moduli space of curves of genus $g$ along the hyperelliptic locus into the blow up of the canonical Hilbert scheme of ${\mathbb P}^{g-1}$ along the closure of the locus of canonical ribbons, which are certain double thickenings of rational normal curves introduced and studied by Bayer and Eisenbud.
Green's canonical syzygy conjecture asserts a simple relationship between the Clifford index of a smooth projective curve and the shape of the minimal free resolution of its homogeneous ideal in the canonical embedding. We prove the analogue of this conjecture formulated by Bayer and Eisenbud for a class of non-reduced curves called ribbons. Our proof uses the results of Voisin and Hirschowitz-Ramanan on Green's conjecture for general smooth curves.
A primitive multiple curve is a Cohen-Macaulay irreducible projective curve Y that can be locally embedded in a smooth surface, and such that C=Y_red is smooth. In this case, L=I_C/I_C^2 is a line bundle on C. If Y is of multiplicity 2, i.e. if I_C^2=0, Y is called a ribbon. If Y is a ribbon and h^0(L^{-2})>0, then Y can be deformed to smooth curves, but in general a coherent sheaf on Y cannot be deformed in coherent sheaves on the smooth curves. A ribbon with associated line bundle L such that deg(L)=-d<0 can be deformed to reduced curves having 2 irreducible components if L can be written as…
It is well known that there is a bijective correspondence between metric ribbon graphs and compact Riemann surfaces with meromorphic Strebel differentials. In this article, it is proved that Grothendieck's correspondence between dessins d'enfants and Belyi morphisms is a special case of this correspondence. For a metric ribbon graph with edge length 1, an algebraic curve over $\bar Q$ and a Strebel differential on it is constructed. It is also shown that the critical trajectories of the measured foliation that is determined by the Strebel differential recover the original metric ribbon graph. …
The topological recursion of Eynard and Orantin governs a variety of problems in enumerative geometry and mathematical physics. The recursion uses the data of a spectral curve to define an infinite family of multidifferentials. It has been conjectured that, under certain conditions, the spectral curve possesses a non-commutative quantisation whose associated differential operator annihilates the partition function for the spectral curve. In this paper, we determine the quantum curves and partition functions for an infinite sequence of enumerative problems involving generalisations of ribbon gr…
In the 80's D. Eisenbud and J. Harris posed the following question: "What are the limits of Weierstrass points in families of curves degenerating to stable curves not of compact type?" We answer their question for one-dimensional families of smooth curves degenerating to stable curves with just two components meeting at points in general position. In this note we treat only those families whose total space is regular. Nevertheless, we announce here our most general answer, to be presented in detail in a forthcoming submission.
In this paper we study the irreducible components of the compactified Jacobian of a ribbon $X$ of arithmetic genus $g$ over a smooth curve $X_{\mathrm{red}}$ of genus $\bar{g}$. We prove that when $g\geq 4\bar{g}-2$ the moduli space of rank $2$ semistable vector bundles over $X_{\mathrm{red}}$ is not an irreducible component and we determine the irreducible components in which it is contained. This answers a question of D. Chen and J.L. Kass in [CK] and completes their results.
In this paper we mainly describe $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothings of projective surfaces with only Wahl singularities which have birational fibers. For instance, these degenerations appear in normal degenerations of the projective plane, and in boundary divisors of the KSBA compactification of the moduli space of surfaces of general type [KSB88]. We give an explicit description of them as smooth deformations plus 3-fold birational operations, through the flips and divisorial contractions in [HTU13]. We interpret the continuous part (smooth deformations) as degenerations of certain curves in …
A ribbon is a double structure on P^1. The geometry of a ribbon is closely related to that of a smooth curve. In this note we consider linear series on ribbons. Our main result is an explicit determinantal description for the locus W^{r}_{2n} of degree 2n line bundles with at least (r+1)-dimensional sections on a ribbon. We also discuss some results of Clifford and Brill-Noether type.
We investigate the connection between Osserman limit series (on curves of pseudocompact type) and Amini-Baker limit linear series (on metrized complexes with corresponding underlying curve) via a notion of pre-limit linear series on curves of the same type. Then, applying the smoothing theorems of Osserman limit linear series, we deduce that, fixing certain metrized complexes, or for certain types of Amini-Baker limit linear series, the smoothability is equivalent to a certain "weak glueing condition". Also for arbitrary metrized complexes of pseudocompact type the weak glueing condition (when…
Double Hurwitz numbers have at least four equivalent definitions. Most naturally, they count covers of the Riemann sphere by genus g curves with certain specified ramification data. This is classically equivalent to counting certain collections of permutations. More recently, double Hurwitz numbers have been expressed as a count of certain ribbon graphs, or as a weighted count of certain labeled graphs. This note is an expository account of the equivalences between these definitions, with a few novelties. In particular, we give a simple combinatorial algorithm to pass directly between the perm…
Some coherent sheaves on projective varieties have a non reduced versal deformation space. For example, this is the case for most unstable rank 2 vector bundles on ${\mathbb P}_2$. In particular, it may happen that some moduli spaces of stable sheaves are non reduced. We consider the case of some sheaves on ribbons (double structures on smooth projective curves): the quasi locally free sheaves of rigid type. Le $E$ be such a sheaf. -- Let ${\mathcal E}$ be a flat family of sheaves containing $E$. We find that it is a reduced deformation of $E$ when some canonical family associated to ${\mathca…
Let X be a projective, equidimensional, singular scheme over an algebraically closed field. Then the existence of a geometric smoothing (i.e. a family of deformations of X over a smooth base curve whose generic fibre is smooth) implies the existence of a formal smoothing as defined by Tziolas. In this paper we address the reverse question giving sufficient conditions on X that guarantee the converse, i.e. formal smoothability implies geometric smoothability. This is useful in light of Tziolas' results giving sufficient criteria for the existence of formal smoothings.
We investigate the smoothing problem of limit linear series of rank one on an enrichment of the notions of nodal curves and metrized complexes called saturated metrized complexes. We give a finitely verifiable full criterion for smoothability of a limit linear series of rank one on saturared metrized complexes, characterize the space of all such smoothings, and extend the criterion to metrized complexes. As applications, we prove that all limit linear series of rank one are smoothable on saturated metrized complexes corresponding to curves of compact-type, and prove an analogue for saturated m…
Here we consider degenerations of stable spin curves for a fixed smoothing of a non-stable curve: we are able to give enumerative results and a description of limits of stable spin curves. We give a geometrically meaningful definition of spin curves over non-stable curves.
In this article we present a unified way to smooth certain multiple structures called ropes on smooth varieties. We prove that most ropes of arbitrary multiplicity, supported on smooth curves can be smoothed. By a rope being smoothable we mean that the rope is the flat limit of a family of smooth, irreducible curves. To construct a smoothing, we connect, on the one hand, deformations of a finite morphism to projective space and, on the other hand, morphisms from a rope to projective space. We also prove a general result of independent interest, namely, finite covers onto smooth irreducible cur…
Let $f\col\C\ra B$ be a regular local smoothing of a nodal curve. In this paper, we find a modular description of the Abel--Néron map having values in Esteves's fine compactified Jacobian and extending the degree-2 Abel--Jacobi map of the generic fiber of $f$
A formula for the dimension of the smoothing component of a $3$-dimensional isolated Cohen--Macaulay singularity is shown. We apply this formula for a $1$-convex threefold with a connected exceptional curve which is blown down to a terminal Gorenstein singularity.
The combinatorial description via ribbon graphs of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces makes it possible to define combinatorial cycles in a natural way. Witten and Kontsevich first conjectured that these classes are polynomials in the tautological classes. We answer affirmatively to this conjecture and find recursively all the polynomials.
We determine the versal deformation of cones, in the simplest case: cones over hyperelliptic curves of high degree. In particular, we show that for degree $4g+4$, the highest degree for which interesting deformations exist, the number of smoothing components is $2^{2g+1}$ ($g\neq3$). We review in a general setting the relation of $T^1(-1)$ with Wahl's Gaussian map. We prove that $T^1(-1)$ vanishes for a general curve and an arbitrary embedding line bundle of degree at least $2g+11$. To find $T^2$ for hyperelliptic cones with the Main Lemma of [Behnke--Christophersen], we compute $T^1$ for the …
We construct locally defined symplectic torus actions on ribbon graph complexes. Symplectic reduction techniques allow for a recursive formula for the symplectic volumes of these spaces. Taking the Laplace transform results in the Eynard-Orantin recursion formulas for the Airy curve x = y^2 / 2.
We consider Abel maps for regular smoothing of nodal curves with values in the Esteves compactified Jacobian. In general, these maps are just rational, and an interesting question is to find an explicit resolution. We translate this problem into an explicit combinatorial problem by means of tropical and toric geometry. We show that the solution of the combinatorial problem gives rise to an explicit resolution of the Abel map. We are able to use this technique to construct and study all the Abel maps of degree one.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a finite field. We show that any algebraic $1$-cycle on $X$ is rationally equivalent to a smooth $1$-cycle, which is a $\mathbb{Z}$-linear combination of smooth curves on $X$. We also prove a generalized version of Poonen's Bertini theorem over finite fields. Given a very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ on $X$ and an arbitrary line bundle $\mathcal{M}$, this version implies the existence of a global section of $\mathcal{M}\otimes \mathcal{L}^{\otimes d}$ for sufficiently large $d$ whose divisor is smooth.
