We generalized the construction of deformations of affine toric varieties of K. Altmann and our previous construction of deformations of weak Fano toric varieties to the case of arbitrary toric varieties by introducing the notion of Minkowski sum decompositions of polyhedral complexes. Our construction embeds the original toric variety into a higher dimensional toric variety where the image is given by a prime binomial complete intersection ideal in Cox homogeneous coordinates. The deformations are realized by families of complete intersections. For compact simplicial toric varieties with at worst Gorenstein terminal singularities, we show that our deformations span the infinitesimal space of deformations by Kodaira-Spencer map. For Fano toric varieties, we show that their deformations can be constructed in higher-dimensional Fano toric varieties related to the Batyrev-Borisov mirror symmetry construction.
We establish a natural and geometric 1-1 correspondence between projective toric varieties of dimension $n$ and horofunction compactifications of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with respect to rational polyhedral norms. For this purpose, we explain a topological model of toric varieties. Consequently, toric varieties in algebraic geometry, normed spaces in convex analysis, and horofunction compactifications in metric geometry are directly and explicitly related.
We prove a vanishing theorem for the Hodge number h^21 of projective toric varieties provided by a certain class of polytopes. We explain how this Hodge number also gives information about the deformation theory of the toric Gorenstein singularity derived from the same polytope. In particular, the vanishing theorem for h^21 implies that these deformations are unobstructed.
Tropicalization is a procedure that assigns polyhedral complexes to algebraic subvarieties of a torus. If one fixes a weighted polyhedral complex, one may study the set of all subvarieties of a toric variety that have that complex as their tropicalization. This gives a "tropical realization" moduli functor. We use rigid analytic geometry and the combinatorics of Chow complexes as studied by Alex Fink to prove that when the ambient toric variety is quasiprojective, the moduli functor is represented by a rigid space. As an application, we show that if a polyhedral complex is the tropicalization …
For a fan $Δ$, we introduce Grothendieck weights as a ring of functions from $Δ$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ that form a K-theoretic analogue of Minkowski weights and describe the operational $K$-theory of a complete toric variety. We give an explicit balancing condition and product formula for these weights, and describe relationships with other fan-based invariants. Applications are given to vector bundles on a toric surface, and to the calculation of Euler characteristics on schon subvarieties.
We construct examples of projective toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone, both in characteristic $0$ and in every prime characteristic $p$. As a consequence, we prove that the pseudo-effective cone of the Grothendieck-Knudsen moduli space $\overline M_{0,n}$ of stable rational curves is not polyhedral for $n\geq 10$ in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$, for all primes $p$. Many of these toric surfaces are related to a very interesting class of arithmetic threefolds that we call arithmetic elliptic pairs of infinite order. Their a…
We prove that for smooth projective toric varieties, the Okounkov body of a $T$-invariant pseudo-effective divisor with respect to a $T$-invariant flag decomposes as a finite Minkowski sum of indecomposable polytopes. We prove that these indecomposable polytopes form a Minkowski base and that they correspond to the rays in the secondary fan. Moreover, we present an algorithm to find the Minkowski base.
The fundamental Davis-Januszkiewicz construction of toric manifolds is reinterpreted in order to allow for generalization. Applications involve the simplicial wedge $J$-construction and Ayzenberg's recent identities arising from composed simplicial complexes.
Toric codes are evaluation codes obtained from an integral convex polytope $P \subset \R^n$ and finite field $\F_q$. They are, in a sense, a natural extension of Reed-Solomon codes, and have been studied recently by J. Hansen and D. Joyner. In this paper, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the minimum distance of a toric code constructed from a polygon $P \subset \R^2$ by examining Minkowski sum decompositions of subpolygons of $P$. Our results give a simple and unifying explanation of bounds of Hansen and empirical results of Joyner; they also apply to previously unknown cases.
The GIT chamber decomposition arising from a subtorus action on a quasiprojective toric variety is a polyhedral complex. Denote by Sigma the fan that is the cone over the polyhedral complex. In this paper we show that the toric variety defined by the fan Sigma is the normalization of the toric Chow quotient of a closely related affine toric variety by a complementary torus.
A combinatorial construction is used to analyze the properties of polyhedral products and generalized moment-angle complexes with respect to certain operations on CW pairs including exponentiation. This allows for the construction of infinite families of toric manifolds, associated to a given one, in a way which simplifies the combinatorial input and consequently, the presentation of the cohomology rings. The new input is the interaction of a purely combinatorial construction with natural associated geometric constructions related to polyhedral products and toric manifolds. Applications of the…
For the toric variety X associated to the Bruhat poset of Schubert varieties in a minuscule G/P, we describe the singular locus in terms of the faces of the associated polyhedral cone. We further show that the singular locus is pure of codimension 3 in X.
We provide a complete description of normal affine varieties with effective algebraic torus action in terms of what we call proper polyhedral divisors on semiprojective varieties. Our theory extends classical cone constructions of Dolgachev, Demazure and Pinkham to the multigraded case, and it comprises the theory of affine toric varieties.
An elliptic pair $(X, C)$ is a projective rational surface $X$ with log terminal singularities, and an irreducible curve $C$ contained in the smooth locus of $X$, with arithmetic genus one and self-intersection zero. They are a useful tool for determining whether the pseudo-effective cone of $X$ is polyhedral, and interesting algebraic and geometric objects in their own right. Especially of interest are toric elliptic pairs, where $X$ is the blow-up of a projective toric surface at the identity element of the torus. In this paper, we classify all toric elliptic pairs of Picard number two. Stri…
In this paper we prove new lower bounds for the minimum distance of a toric surface code defined by a convex lattice polygon P. The bounds involve a geometric invariant L(P), called the full Minkowski length of P which can be easily computed for any given P.
For a complete, smooth toric variety Y, we describe the graded vector space T_Y^1. Furthermore, we show that smooth toric surfaces are unobstructed and that a smooth toric surface is rigid if and only if it is Fano. For a given toric surface we then construct homogeneous deformations by means of Minkowski decompositions of polyhedral subdivisions, compute their images under the Kodaira-Spencer map, and show that they span T_Y^1.
In this paper, we discuss the toric ideals of Minkowski sums of unit simplices. More precisely, we prove that the toric ideal of Minkowski sum of unit simplices has a squarefree initial ideal and is generated by quadratic binomials. Moreover, we also prove that Minkowski sums of unit simplices have the integer decomposition property. Those results are a partial contribution to Oda conjecture and Bøgvad conjecture.
We consider the notions of Groebner fan and Newton non-degeneracy for an ideal on a toric variety, extending the two existing notions for ideals on affine spaces. We prove, without assumptions on the characteristic of the base fields, that the "Groebner fan" of such an ideal is actually a polyhedral fan and that a sub-variety defined by a Newton non-degenerate ideal on a toric variety $X_σ$ admits a toric embedded resolution of singularities $Z\longrightarrow X_σ.$
We use localization to describe the restriction map from equivariant Chow cohomology to ordinary Chow cohomology for complete toric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions and Minkowski weights. We compute examples showing that this map is not surjective in general, and that its kernel is not always generated in degree one. We prove a localization formula for mixed volumes of lattice polytopes and, more generally, a Bott residue formula for toric vector bundles.
We prove that the Okounkov body of a big divisor with respect to a general flag on a smooth projective surface whose pseudo-effective cone is rational polyhedral decomposes as the Minkowski sum of finitely many simplices and line segments arising as Okounkov bodies of nef divisors.
Given a polyhedral cone sigma with smooth two-dimensional faces and, moreover, a lattice point R in the dual cone of sigma, we describe the part of the versal deformation of the associated toric variety TV(sigma) that is built from the deformation parameters of multidegree R. Let Q the polyhedron obtained by intersecting sigma with the hyperplane R=1. Then the base space is (the germ of) an affine scheme that reflects certain possibilities of splitting Q into Minkowski summands.
The main object in this paper is a certain rational convex polytope whose lattice points give a polyhedral realization of a highest weight crystal basis. This is also identical to a Newton-Okounkov body of a flag variety, and it gives a toric degeneration. In this paper, we prove that a specific class of this polytope is given by Kiritchenko's Demazure operators on polytopes. This implies that polytopes in this class are all lattice polytopes. As an application, we give a sufficient condition for the corresponding toric variety to be Gorenstein Fano.
In this note we study properties of partially ample line bundles on simplicial projective toric varieties. We prove that the cone of q-ample line bundles is a union of rational polyhedral cones, and calculate these cones in examples. We prove a restriction theorem for big q-ample line bundles, and deduce that q-ampleness of the anticanonical bundle is not invariant under flips. Finally we prove a Kodaira-type vanishing theorem for q-ample line bundles.
We study functions on the class group of a toric variety measuring the rates of growth of the cohomology groups of multiples of divisors. We show that these functions are piecewise polynomial with respect to finite polyhedral chamber decompositions. As applications, we express the self-intersection number of a T-Cartier divisor as a linear combination of the volumes of the bounded regions in the corresponding hyperplane arrangement and prove an asymptotic converse to Serre vanishing.
We develop a theory of multi-stage degenerations of toric varieties over finite rank valuation rings, extending the Mumford--Gubler theory in rank one. Such degenerations are constructed from fan-like structures over totally ordered abelian groups of finite rank. Our main theorem describes the geometry of successive special fibers in the degeneration in terms of the polyhedral geometry of a system of recession complexes associated to the fan.
The operational Chow cohomology classes of a complete toric variety are identified with certain functions, called Minkowski weights, on the corresponding fan. The natural product of Chow cohomology classes makes the Minkowski weights into a commutative ring; the product is computed by a displacement in the lattice, which corresponds to a deformation in the toric variety. We show that, with rational coefficients, this ring embeds in McMullen's polytope algebra, and that the polytope algebra is the direct limit of these Chow rings, over all compactifications of a given torus. In the nonsingular …
In this paper we classify SL_2-actions on normal affine T-varieties that are normalized by the torus T. This is done in terms of a combinatorial description of T-varieties given by Altmann and Hausen. The main ingredient is a generalization of Demazure's roots of the fan of a toric variety. As an application we give a description of special SL_2-actions on normal affine varieties. We also obtain, in our terms, the classification of quasihomogeneous SL_2-threefolds due to Popov.
For affine toric varieties, the vector space T1 (containing the infinitesimal deformations) will be interpreted via Minkowski summands of cross cuts of the defining polyhedral cone. This result will be applied to study the deformation theory of (in particular non-isolated) three-dimensional Gorenstein singularities.
We prove that every balanced 1-dimensional polyhedral complex arises as the tropicalization of a smooth curve over a non-Archimedean field mapping to a toric Artin fan, namely the quotient of a toric variety by its dense torus.
Normal toric varieties over a field or a discrete valuation ring are classified by rational polyhedral fans. We generalize this classification to normal toric varieties over an arbitrary valuation ring of rank one. The proof is based on a generalization of Sumihiro's theorem to this non-noetherian setting. These toric varieties play an important role for tropicalizations.
For a toric variety X_P determined by a rational polyhedral fan P in a lattice N, Payne shows that the equivariant Chow cohomology of X_P is the Sym(N)--algebra C^0(P) of integral piecewise polynomial functions on P. We use the Cartan-Eilenberg spectral sequence to analyze the associated reflexive sheaf on Proj(N), showing that the Chern classes depend on subtle geometry of P and giving criteria for the splitting of the sheaf as a sum of line bundles. For certain fans associated to the reflection arrangement A_n, we describe a connection between C^0(P) and logarithmic vector fields tangent to …
We give a complete description of the cohomology ring $A^*(\overline Z)$ of a compactification of a linear subvariety $Z$ of a torus in a smooth toric variety whose fan $Σ$ is supported on the tropicalization of $Z$. It turns out that cocycles on $\overline Z$ canonically correspond to Minkowski weights on $Σ$ and that the cup product is described by the intersection product on the tropical matroid variety $\operatorname{Trop}(Z)$.
In this paper we give a combinatorial view on the adjunction theory of toric varieties. Inspired by classical adjunction theory of polarized algebraic varieties we define two convex-geometric notions: the Q-codegree and the nef value of a rational polytope P. We define the adjoint polytope P^(s) as the set of those points in P, whose lattice distance to every facet of P is at least s. We prove a structure theorem for lattice polytopes P with high Q-codegree. If P^(s) is empty for some s < 2/(dim(P)+2), then the lattice polytope P has lattice width one. This has consequences in Ehrhart theory a…
The study of frequency synchronization configurations in Kuramoto models is a ubiquitous mathematical problem that has found applications in many seemingly independent fields. In this paper, we focus on networks whose underlying graph are cycle graphs. Based on the recent result on the upper bound of the frequency synchronization configurations in this context, we propose a toric deformation homotopy method for locating all frequency synchronization configurations with complexity that is linear in this upper bound. Loosely based on the polyhedral homotopy method, this homotopy induces a deform…
It is a long-standing question whether an arbitrary variety is desingularized by finitely many normalized Nash blow-ups. We consider this question in the case of a toric variety. We interpret the normalized Nash blow-up in polyhedral terms, show how continued fractions can be used to give an affirmative answer for a toric surface, and report on a computer investigation in which over a thousand 3- and 4-dimensional toric varieties were successfully resolved.
In the case of two-dimensional cyclic quotient singularities, we classify all one-parameter toric deformations in terms of certain Minkowski decompositions. In particular, we describe to which components each such deformation maps, show how to induce each deformation from a versal family, give explicit equations for each deformation, describe the singularities in the general fibers, and construct the corresponding partial simultaneous resolutions.
We apply ideas from intersection theory on toric varieties to tropical intersection theory. We introduce mixed Minkowski weights on toric varieties which interpolate between equivariant and ordinary Chow cohomology classes on complete toric varieties. These objects fit into the framework of tropical intersection theory developed by Allermann and Rau. Standard facts about intersection theory on toric varieties are applied to show that the definitions of tropical intersection product on tropical cycles in $\R^n$ given by Allermann-Rau and Mikhalkin are equivalent. We introduce an induced tropica…
We discuss a characteristic free version of Frobenius splittings for toric varieties and give a polyhedral criterion for a toric variety to be diagonally split. We apply this criterion to show that section rings of nef line bundles on diagonally split toric varieties are normally presented and Koszul, and that Schubert varieties are not diagonally split in general.
Tropical toric varieties are partial compactifications of finite dimensional real vector spaces associated with rational polyhedral fans. We introduce plurisubharmonic functions and a Bedford--Taylor product for Lagerberg currents on open subsets of a tropical toric variety. The resulting tropical toric pluripotential theory provides the link to give a canonical correspondence between complex and non-archimedean pluripotential theories of invariant plurisubharmonic functions on toric varieties. We will apply this correspondence to solve invariant non-archimedean Monge--Ampère equations on tori…
We construct polyhedral families of valuations on the branching algebra of a morphism of reductive groups. This establishes a connection between the combinatorial rules for studying a branching problem and the tropical geometry of the branching algebra. In the special case when the branching problem comes from the inclusion of a Levi subgroup or a diagonal subgroup, we use the dual canonical basis of Lusztig and Kashiwara to build toric deformations of the branching algebra.
These notes are based on three lectures given at the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer school. The purpose of this series of lectures is to introduce the notion of a toric fibration and to give its geometrical and combinatorial characterizations. Polarized toric varieties which are birationally equivalent to projective toric bundles are associated to a class of polytopes called Cayley polytopes. Their geometry and combinatorics have a fruitful interplay leading to fundamental insight in both directions. These notes will illustrate geometrical phenomena, in algebraic geometry and neighboring fields, which …
In this paper, we describe a way to construct cycles which represent the Todd class of a toric variety. Given a lattice with an inner product we assign a rational number m(s) to each rational polyhedral cone s in the lattice, such that for any toric variety X with fan S, the Todd class of X is the sum over all cones s in S of m(s)[V(s)]. This constitutes an improved answer to an old question of Danilov. In a similar way, beginning with the choice of a complete flag in the lattice, we obtain the cycle Todd classes constructed by Morelli. Our construction is based on an intersection product on c…
We introduce the Cox homotopy algorithm for solving a sparse system of polynomial equations on a compact toric variety $X_Σ$. The algorithm lends its name from a construction, described by Cox, of $X_Σ$ as a GIT quotient $X_Σ= (\mathbb{C}^k \setminus Z) // G$ of a quasi-affine variety by the action of a reductive group. Our algorithm tracks paths in the total coordinate space $\mathbb{C}^k$ of $X_Σ$ and can be seen as a homogeneous version of the standard polyhedral homotopy, which works on the dense torus of $X_Σ$. It furthermore generalizes the commonly used path tracking algorithms in (mult…
For the toric variety X associated to the Bruhat poset of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian, we describe the singular locus in terms of the faces of the associated polyhedral cone. We also determine the tangent cones at the maximal singularities of X. These turn out to be again toric varieties. In the case of X being associated to the Bruhat poset of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian of 2-planes in a n-dimensional vector space (over the base field), we also prove a certain product formula relating the multiplicities at certain singular points.
We prove that the cohomology of the moduli space of morphisms of a fixed finite degree from a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$ to a complete simplicial toric variety $\mathbb{P}(Σ)$, denoted by the rational polyhedral fan $Σ$, stabilizes. As an arithmetic consequence we obtain a resolution of the Batyrev-Manin conjecture for toric varieties over global function fields in all but finitely many characteristics.
The simplicial wedge construction on simplicial complexes and simple polytopes has been used by a variety of authors to study toric and related spaces, including non-singular toric varieties, toric manifolds, intersections of quadrics and more generally, polyhedral products. In this paper we extend the analysis to include toric orbifolds. Our main results yield infinite families of toric orbifolds, derived from a given one, whose integral cohomology is free of torsion and is concentrated in even degrees, a property which might be termed \emph{integrally equivariantly formal}. In all cases, it …
The global Okounkov body of a projective variety is a closed convex cone that encodes asymptotic information about every big line bundle on the variety. In the case of a rank two toric vector bundle E on a smooth projective toric variety, we use its Klyachko filtrations to give an explicit description of the global Okounkov body of P(E). In particular, we show that this is a rational polyhedral cone and that P(E) is a Mori dream space.
The nef cone of a projective variety Y is an important and often elusive invariant. In this paper we construct two polyhedral lower bounds and one polyhedral upper bound for the nef cone of Y using an embedding of Y into a toric variety. The lower bounds generalize the combinatorial description of the nef cone of a Mori dream space, while the upper bound generalizes the F-conjecture for the nef cone of the moduli space \bar{M}_{0,n} to a wide class of varieties.
This is an extended abstract for a talk given at the mini-workshop "Cohomology rings and fundamental groups of hyperplane arrangements, wonderful compactifications, and real toric varieties", held in Oberwolfach, September 30-October 6, 2012. We describe a formula (obtained in joint work with Alvise Trevisan) for computing the Betti numbers of real toric manifolds, based on a study of cohomology with coefficients in rank one local systems for various polyhedral products. Applying this formula, we recover Henderson's computation of the Betti numbers of real Hessenberg varieties. We conclude wit…
