We provide a complete description of normal affine varieties with effective algebraic torus action in terms of what we call proper polyhedral divisors on semiprojective varieties. Our theory extends classical cone constructions of Dolgachev, Demazure and Pinkham to the multigraded case, and it comprises the theory of affine toric varieties.
Given an effective action of an (n-1)-dimensional torus on an n-dimensional normal affine variety, Mumford constructs a toroidal embedding, while Altmann and Hausen give a description in terms of a polyhedral divisor on a curve. We compare the fan of the toroidal embedding with this polyhedral divisor.
We find polyhedral divisors corresponding to the torus action of complexity one on affine trinomial hypersurfaces. Explicit computations for particular classes of such hypersurfaces including Pham-Brieskorn surfaces and rational trinomial hypersurfaces are given.
We show that the presentation of affine $\mathbb{T}$-varieties of complexity one in terms of polyhedral divisors holds over an arbitrary field. We also describe a class of multigraded algebras over Dedekind domains. We study how the algebra associated to a polyhedral divisor changes when we extend the scalars. As another application, we provide a combinatorial description of affine $\mathbf{G}$-varieties of complexity one over a field, where $\mathbf{G}$ is a (not-nescessary split) torus, by using elementary facts on Galois descent. This class of affine $\mathbf{G}$-varieties is described via …
In this paper we classify SL_2-actions on normal affine T-varieties that are normalized by the torus T. This is done in terms of a combinatorial description of T-varieties given by Altmann and Hausen. The main ingredient is a generalization of Demazure's roots of the fan of a toric variety. As an application we give a description of special SL_2-actions on normal affine varieties. We also obtain, in our terms, the classification of quasihomogeneous SL_2-threefolds due to Popov.
The Cox ring of a so-called Mori Dream Space (MDS) is finitely generated and it is graded over the divisor class group. Hence the spectrum of the Cox ring comes with an action of an algebraic torus whose GIT quotient is the variety in question. We present the associated description of this Cox ring as a polyhedral divisor. Via the shape of its polyhedral coefficients, it connects the equivariant structure of the Cox ring with the world of stable loci and stable multiplicities of linear systems.
Using the language of polyhedral divisors and divisorial fans we describe invariant divisors on normal varieties X which admit an effective codimension one torus action. In this picture X is given by a divisorial fan on a smooth projective curve Y. Cartier divisors on X can be described by piecewise affine functions h on the divisorial fan S whereas Weil divisors correspond to certain zero and one dimensional faces of it. Furthermore we provide descriptions of the divisor class group and the canonical divisor. Global sections of line bundles O(D_h) will be determined by a subset of a weight po…
The aim of this note is to give an alternative proof of a theorem of Koras and Russell, that is, a characterization of smooth contractible affine varieties endowed with a hyperbolic action of the group $\mathbb{G}_{m}\simeq\mathbb{C}^{\text{*}}$, using the language of polyhedral divisors developed by Altmann and Hausen as generalization of $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors.
Using the language of T-varieties, we study torus invariant curves on a complete normal variety $X$ with an effective codimension-one torus action. In the same way that the $T$-invariant Weil divisors on $X$ are sums of "vertical" divisors and "horizontal" divisors, so too is each $T$-invariant curve a sum of "vertical" curves and "horizontal" curves. We give combinatorial formulas that calculate the intersection between $T$-invariant divisors and $T$-invariant curves, and generalize the celebrated toric cone theorem to the case of complete complexity-one $T$-varieties.
K. Altmann and J. Hausen have shown that affine T-varieties can be described in terms of p-divisors. Given a p-divisor describing a T-variety X, we show how to construct new p-divisors describing X with respect to actions by larger tori. Conversely, if dim T=dim X-1, we show how to construct new p-divisors describing X with respect to actions by closed subtori of T. As a first application, we give explicit constructions for the p-divisors describing certain Cox rings. Furthermore, we show how to upgrade the p-divisors describing the total spaces of homogeneous deformations of toric varieties.
A description of complete normal varieties with lower dimensional torus action has been given by Altmann, Hausen, and Suess, generalizing the theory of toric varieties. Considering the case where the acting torus T has codimension one, we describe T-invariant Weil and Cartier divisors and provide formulae for calculating global sections, intersection numbers, and Euler characteristics. As an application, we use divisors on these so-called T-varieties to define new evaluation codes called T-codes. We find estimates on their minimum distance using intersection theory. This generalizes the theory…
Generalizing the passage from a fan to a toric variety, we provide a combinatorial approach to construct arbitrary effective torus actions on normal, algebraic varieties. Based on the notion of a ``proper polyhedral divisor'' introduced in earlier work, we develop the concept of a ``divisorial fan'' and show that these objects encode the equivariant gluing of affine varieties with torus action. We characterize separateness and completeness of the resulting varieties in terms of divisorial fans, and we study examples like C*-surfaces and projectivizations of (non-split) vector bundles over tori…
We study the relation between projective T-varieties and their affine cones in the language of the so-called divisorial fans and polyhedral divisors. As an application, we present the Grassmannian Grass(2,n) as a ``fansy divisor'' on the moduli space of stable, n-pointed, rational curves.
Tropicalization is a procedure that assigns polyhedral complexes to algebraic subvarieties of a torus. If one fixes a weighted polyhedral complex, one may study the set of all subvarieties of a toric variety that have that complex as their tropicalization. This gives a "tropical realization" moduli functor. We use rigid analytic geometry and the combinatorics of Chow complexes as studied by Alex Fink to prove that when the ambient toric variety is quasiprojective, the moduli functor is represented by a rigid space. As an application, we show that if a polyhedral complex is the tropicalization …
Generalising toric geometry we study compact varieties admitting lower dimensional torus actions. In particular we describe divisors on them in terms of convex geometry and give a criterion for their ampleness. These results may be used to study Fano varieties with small torus actions. As a first result we classify log del Pezzo C*-surfaces of Picard number 1 and Gorenstein index less than 4. In further examples we show how classification might work in higher dimensions and we give explicit descriptions of some equivariant smoothings of Fano threefolds.
Using Altmann-Hausen-Suss description of $\mathbb{T}$-varieties via divisorial fans and Kóvacs-Schwede-Smith characterization of Du Bois singularities, we study Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois $\mathbb{T}$-singularities of complexity one. We exhibit cohomological criteria for a $\mathbb{T}$-variety to be Cohen-Macaulay and Du Bois in terms of polyhedral divisors. We give an example of a Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois singularity of complexity one which does not have rational singularities.
We give an explicit description of the divisor class groups of rational trinomial varieties. As an application, we relate the iteration of Cox rings of any rational variety with torus action of complexity one to that of a Du Val surface.
We denote by FPMC the class of all non-singular projective algebraic surfaces X over C with a finite polyhedral Mori cone NE(X)\subset NS(X)\otimes R. If rho(X)=rk NS(X)\ge 3, then the set Exc(X) of all exceptional curves on X\in FPMC is finite and generates NE(X). Let δ_E(X) be the maximum of (-E^2) and p_E(X) the maximum of p_a(E) respectively for E\in Exc(X). For fixed ρ\ge 3, δ_E and p_E we denote by FPMC_{ρ,δ_E,p_E} the class of all X\in FPMC such that ρ(X)=ρ, δ_E(X)=δ_E and p_E(X)=p_E. We prove that the class FPMC_{ρ,δ_E,p_E} is bounded: for any X\in FPMC_{ρ,δ_E,p_E} there exist an ample…
We continue the classification of terminal Fano threefolds with an effective two-torus action. In earlier work we settled the Q-factorial case with Picard number one. Here we treat the larger class of varieties that do not admit any contraction of a prime divisor; these are called combinatorially minimal.
We obtain, by a direct computation, explicit descriptions of all principally polarized semi-abelic varieties of torus rank up to 3. We describe the geometry of their symmetric theta divisors and obtain explicit formulas for the involution and its fixed points. These results allow us to give a new proof of the statements about the dimensions, for small genus, of the loci of ppav with theta divisor containing two-torsion points of multiplicity three. We also prove a result about the closure of this set. Our computations used in our work arXiv:1103.1857 to compute the class of the closure of the …
This is a survey of the language of polyhedral divisors describing T-varieties. This language is explained in parallel to the well established theory of toric varieties. In addition to basic constructions, subjects touched on include singularities, separatedness and properness, divisors and intersection theory, cohomology, Cox rings, polarizations, and equivariant deformations, among others.
In this work we provide effective bounds and classification results for rational $\QQ$-factorial Fano varieties with a complexity-one torus action and Picard number one depending on the invariants dimension and Picard index. This complements earlier work by Hausen, Süß and the author, where the case of free divisor class group of rank one was treated.
This article is a continuation of SG/0107014. Some vanishing theorems for orbifold elliptic genus of level N for multi-fans are proved. As an application, complete Q-factorial toric varieties whose canonical divisors are divisible by their dimesion in the group of T-Cartier divisors are determined.
We describe explicitly the normalization of affine varieties with an algebraic torus action of complexity one in terms of polyhedral divisors. We also provide a description of homogeneous integrally closed ideals of affine T-varieties of complexity one.
Let X be a Mori dream space together with an effective torus action of complexity one. In this note, we construct a polyhedral divisor on a suitable covering of the projective line P^1 which corresponds to the affine spectrum of the Cox ring of X. This description allows for a detailed study of torus orbits and deformations of the latter. Moreover, we present coverings of P^1 together with an action of a finite abelian group A in terms of so-called A-divisors of degree zero on P^1.
The purpose of this article is to investigate the intersection cohomology for algebraic varieties with torus action. Given an algebraic torus $\mathbb{T}$, one of our result determines the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of any normal projective $\mathbb{T}$-variety admitting an algebraic curve as global quotient. The calculation is expressed in terms of a combinatorial description involving a divisorial fan which is the analogous of the defining fan of a toric variety. Our main tool to obtain this computation is a description of the decomposition theorem in this context.
We study the greatest common divisor problem for torus invariant blowing-up morphisms of nonsingular toric Fano varieties. Our main result applies the theory of Okounkov bodies together with an arithmetic form of Cartan's Second Main theorem, which has been established by Ru and Vojta. It also builds on Silverman's geometric concept of greatest common divisor. As a special case of our results, we deduce a bound for the generalized greatest common divisor of pairs of nonzero algebraic numbers.
We prove that on a Bott-Samelson variety $X$ every movable divisor is nef. This enables us to consider Zariski decompositions of effective divisors, which in turn yields a description of the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone. This amounts to information on all possible birational morphisms from $X$. Applying this result, we prove the rational polyhedrality of the global Newton-Okounkov body of a Bott-Samelson variety with respect to the so called `horizontal' flag. In fact, we prove the stronger property of the finite generation of the corresponding global value semigroup.
We show that if $(X,Y)$ is a simple normal crossings log Calabi--Yau pair, then there is a real torus of dimension equal to the codimension of the smallest stratum of $Y$ which can be used to construct $W_{2k-1}H^k(X \setminus Y;\mathbb{Q})$ for all $k$. We show that an analogous result holds for degenerations of Calabi--Yau varieties. We use this to show that P=W type results hold for pairs $(X,Y)$ consisting of a rational surface $X$ and a nodal anticanonical divisor $Y$, and for K3 surfaces.
We investigate the Cox ring of a normal complete variety X with algebraic torus action. Our first results relate the Cox ring of X to that of a maximal geometric quotient of X. As a consequence, we obtain a complete description of the Cox ring in terms of generators and relations for varieties with torus action of complexity one. Moreover, we provide a combinatorial approach to the Cox ring using the language of polyhedral divisors. Applied to smooth k*-surfaces, our results give a description of the Cox ring in terms of Orlik-Wagreich graphs. As examples, we explicitly compute the Cox rings o…
We solve the equivariant generalized Nash problem for any non-rational normal variety with torus action of complexity one. Namely, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the Nash order on the set of equivariant divisorial valuations on any such variety. Using this description, we positively solve the classical Nash problem in this setting, showing that every essential valuation is a Nash valuation. We also describe terminal valuations and use our results to answer negatively a question of de Fernex and Docampo by constructing examples of Nash valuations which are neither minimal nor …
Let $X$ be a 3-dimensional affine variety with a faithful action of a 2-dimensional torus $T$. Then the space of first order infinitesimal deformations $T^1(X)$ is graded by the characters of $T$, and the zeroth graded component $T^1(X)_0$ consists of all equivariant first order (infinitesimal) deformations. Suppose that using the construction of such varieties from [1], one can obtain $X$ from a proper polyhedral divisor $\mathscr D$ on $\mathbb P^1$ such that the tail cone of (any of) the used polyhedra is pointed and full-dimensional, and all vertices of all polyhedra are lattice points. Th…
We provide a complete description of normal affine algebraic varieties over the real numbers endowed with an effective action of the real circle, that is, the real form of the complex multiplicative group whose real locus consists of the unitary circle in the real plane. Our approach builds on the geometrico-combinatorial description of normal affine varieties with effective actions of split tori in terms of proper polyhedral divisors on semiprojective varieties due to Altmann and Hausen
Let $X$ be an affine algebraic variety endowed with an action of complexity one of an algebraic torus $\mathbb{T}$. It is well known that homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations on the algebra of regular functions $\mathbb{K}[X]$ can be described in terms of proper polyhedral divisors corresponding to $\mathbb{T}$-variety $X$. We prove that homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations commute if an only if some combinatorial criterion holds. These results are used to describe actions of unipotent groups of dimension two on affine $\mathbb{T}$-varieties.
In a first result, we describe all finitely generated factorial algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero that come with an effective multigrading of complexity one by means of generators and relations. This enables us to construct systematically varieties with free divisor class group and a complexity one torus action via their Cox rings. For the Fano varieties of this type that have a free divisor class group of rank one, we provide explicit bounds for the number of possible deformation types depending on the dimension and the index of the Picard group in the divisor…
Associated to any divisor in the Chow ring of a simplicial tropical fan, we construct a family of polytopal complexes, called normal complexes, which we propose as an analogue of the well-studied notion of normal polytopes from the setting of complete fans. We describe certain closed convex polyhedral cones of divisors for which the "volume" of each divisor in the cone - that is, the degree of its top power - is equal to the volume of the associated normal complexes. For the Bergman fan of any matroid with building set, we prove that there exists an open family of such cones of divisors with n…
We compute the cones of effective divisors on blowups of $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^2$ and $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^3$ in up to 6 points. We also show that all these varieties are log Fano, giving a conceptual explanation for the fact that all the cones we compute are rational polyhedral.
The first author recently introduced a "nearby cycles formalism" in the framework of chain complexes of parity sheaves. In this paper, we compute this functor in two related settings: (i) affine space, stratified by the action of a torus, and (ii) the global Schubert variety associated to the first fundamental coweight of the group $PGL_n$. The latter is a parity-sheaf analogue of Gaitsgory's central sheaf construction.
In this paper we prove the algebraic-tropical correspondence for stable maps of rational curves with marked points to toric varieties such that the marked points are mapped to given orbits in the big torus and in the boundary divisor, the map has prescribed tangency to the boundary divisor, and certain quadruples of marked points have prescribed cross-ratios. In particular, our results generalize the results of Nishinou and Siebert. The proof is very short, involves only the standard theory of schemes, and works in arbitrary characteristic (including the mixed characteristic case).
A T-variety is an algebraic variety X with an effective regular action of an algebraic torus T. Altmann and Hausen gave a combinatorial description of an affine T-variety X by means of polyhedral divisors. In this paper we compute the higher direct images of the structure sheaf of a desingularization of X in terms of this combinatorial data. As a consequence, we give a criterion as to when a T-variety has rational singularities. We also provide a partial criterion for a T-variety to be Cohen-Macaulay. As an application we characterize in this terms quasihomogeneous elliptic singularities of su…
An embedded variety is said to be well-poised when the associated initial ideal degenerations coming from points of the tropical variety are reduced and irreducible. Varieties with a well-poised embedding admit a large collection of explicitly constructible Newton-Okounkov bodies. This paper aims to study the well-poised property under torus quotients. Our first result states that GIT quotients of normal well-poised varieties by quasi-tori also have well-poised embeddings. As an application, we show that several Hassett spaces, $\overline{M}_{0,β}$, are well-poised under Alexeev's embedding. C…
Given a closed subvariety of an algebraic torus, the associated tropical variety is a polyhedral fan in the space of 1-parameter subgroups of the torus which describes the behaviour of the subvariety at infinity. We show that the link of the origin has only top rational homology if a genericity condition is satisfied. Our result is obtained using work of Tevelev and Deligne's theory of mixed Hodge structures.
In this article we study the structure of klt projective varieties with nef anticanonical divisor (and more generally, varieties of semi-Fano type), especially the canonical fibrations associated to them. We show that: 1. the Albanese map for such variety is a locally constant fibration (that is, an analytic fibre bundle with connected fibres that $X$ is equal to the product of the universal cover of the Albanese torus by the fibre of the Albanese map quotient by a diagonal action of the fundamenatl group of the Albanese torus); 2. if the smooth locus is simply connected, the MRC fibration of …
Consider an algebraic torus of small dimension acting on an open subset of a complex vector space, or more generally on a quasiaffine variety such that a separated orbit space exists. We discuss under which conditions this orbit space is quasiprojective. One of our counterexamples provides a toric variety with enough effective invariant Cartier divisors that is not embeddable into a smooth toric variety.
In the first part of this paper we consider compact algebraic manifolds M^2n with an algebraic (n-1)-Torus action. We show that there is a T-invariant meromorphic section $σ$ of the canonical bundle of M. Any such $σ$ defines a divisor D. On the complement M'=M-D we have a trivialization of the canonical bundle and a T-action. If the first cohomology of M' vanishes, then results of [2] imply that there is a Special Lagrangian (SLag) fibration on M'. We study how the fibers compactify in M and give examples of SLag fibrations on M', including some cases there the first cohomology of M' doesn't …
This is a slightly expanded version of the talk given by Ch.O. at the conference "Instantons in complex geometry", at the Steklov Institute in Moscow. The purpose of this talk was to explain the algebraic results of our paper "Abelian Yang-Mills theory on Real tori and Theta divisors of Klein surfaces". In this paper we compute determinant index bundles of certain families of Real Dirac type operators on Klein surfaces as elements in the corresponding Grothendieck group of Real line bundles in the sense of Atiyah. On a Klein surface these determinant index bundles have a natural holomorphic de…
Let $k$ be a non-Archimedean rational valued field. We construct the moduli space of linearly rigidified polarized analytic tori over $k$ that admit rigid-analytic uniformization by an algebraic torus and observe that it is in definable rigid subanalytic bijection with a $PGL_N$-bundle over a polyhedral domain in an algebraic torus. We use this observation to prove that the Hrushovski-Kazhdan motivic volume of a non-Archimedean semi-algebraic family of Abelian varieties admitting such a uniformization fibrewise vanishes. This question is motivated by the conjectural geometric interpretation of…
We address the distribution properties of points of small height on proper toric varieties and applications to the related Bogomolov property. We introduce the notion of monocritical toric metrized divisor and we prove that equidistribution occurs for every generic, small sequence with respect to a toric metrized divisor, for every place if and only if the divisor is monocritical. Furthermore, when this is the case, the limit measure is a translate of the natural measure on the compact torus sitting in the principal orbit of the ambient toric variety. We also study the $v$-adic modulus distrib…
We introduce the notion of flag Bott-Samelson variety as a generalization of Bott-Samelson variety and flag variety. Using a birational morphism from an appropriate Bott-Samelson variety to a flag Bott-Samelson variety, we compute Newton-Okounkov bodies of flag Bott-Samelson varieties as generalized string polytopes, which are applied to give polyhedral expressions for irreducible decompositions of tensor products of $G$-modules. Furthermore, we show that flag Bott-Samelson varieties are degenerated into flag Bott manifolds with higher rank torus actions, and find the Duistermaat-Heckman measu…
On tropical geometry in $\rr^2$, the divisor and the Jacobian variety are defined in analogy to algebraic geometry. For study of these objects, it is important to think of the `bunch' of a tropical curve. In this paper, we will show that if the bunch is a bouquet, then the Jacobian is a higher-dimensional torus.
