We use localization to describe the restriction map from equivariant Chow cohomology to ordinary Chow cohomology for complete toric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions and Minkowski weights. We compute examples showing that this map is not surjective in general, and that its kernel is not always generated in degree one. We prove a localization formula for mixed volumes of lattice polytopes and, more generally, a Bott residue formula for toric vector bundles.
In this paper we prove new lower bounds for the minimum distance of a toric surface code defined by a convex lattice polygon P. The bounds involve a geometric invariant L(P), called the full Minkowski length of P which can be easily computed for any given P.
In this paper, we discuss the toric ideals of Minkowski sums of unit simplices. More precisely, we prove that the toric ideal of Minkowski sum of unit simplices has a squarefree initial ideal and is generated by quadratic binomials. Moreover, we also prove that Minkowski sums of unit simplices have the integer decomposition property. Those results are a partial contribution to Oda conjecture and Bøgvad conjecture.
We define the notion of a piecewise linear map from a fan $Σ$ to $\tilde{\mathfrak{B}}(G)$, the cone over the Tits building of a linear algebraic group $G$. Let $X_Σ$ be a toric variety with fan $Σ$. We show that when $G$ is reductive the set of integral piecewise linear maps from $Σ$ to $\tilde{\mathfrak{B}}(G)$ classifies the isomorphism classes of (framed) toric principal $G$-bundles on $X_Σ$. This in particular recovers Klyachko's classification of toric vector bundles, and gives new classification results for the orthogonal and symplectic toric principal bundles.
We generalized the construction of deformations of affine toric varieties of K. Altmann and our previous construction of deformations of weak Fano toric varieties to the case of arbitrary toric varieties by introducing the notion of Minkowski sum decompositions of polyhedral complexes. Our construction embeds the original toric variety into a higher dimensional toric variety where the image is given by a prime binomial complete intersection ideal in Cox homogeneous coordinates. The deformations are realized by families of complete intersections. For compact simplicial toric varieties with at w…
For a fan $Δ$, we introduce Grothendieck weights as a ring of functions from $Δ$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ that form a K-theoretic analogue of Minkowski weights and describe the operational $K$-theory of a complete toric variety. We give an explicit balancing condition and product formula for these weights, and describe relationships with other fan-based invariants. Applications are given to vector bundles on a toric surface, and to the calculation of Euler characteristics on schon subvarieties.
We prove that for smooth projective toric varieties, the Okounkov body of a $T$-invariant pseudo-effective divisor with respect to a $T$-invariant flag decomposes as a finite Minkowski sum of indecomposable polytopes. We prove that these indecomposable polytopes form a Minkowski base and that they correspond to the rays in the secondary fan. Moreover, we present an algorithm to find the Minkowski base.
We associate to each toric vector bundle on a toric variety X(Delta) a "branched cover" of the fan Delta together with a piecewise-linear function on the branched cover. This construction generalizes the usual correspondence between toric Cartier divisors and piecewise-linear functions. We apply this combinatorial geometric technique to investigate the existence of resolutions of coherent sheaves by vector bundles, using singular nonquasiprojective toric threefolds as a testing ground. Our main new result is the construction of complete toric threefolds that have no nontrivial toric vector bun…
Toric codes are evaluation codes obtained from an integral convex polytope $P \subset \R^n$ and finite field $\F_q$. They are, in a sense, a natural extension of Reed-Solomon codes, and have been studied recently by J. Hansen and D. Joyner. In this paper, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the minimum distance of a toric code constructed from a polygon $P \subset \R^2$ by examining Minkowski sum decompositions of subpolygons of $P$. Our results give a simple and unifying explanation of bounds of Hansen and empirical results of Joyner; they also apply to previously unknown cases.
Using the notion of a valuation into the semifield of piecewise linear functions, we give a classification of torus equivariant flat families of finite type over a toric variety base, by certain piecewise linear maps between fans. As a consequence we derive a classification of toric vector bundles phrased in terms of tropicalized linear spaces. We use these tools to give a characterization of the Mori dream space property for a projectivized toric vector bundle.
We show that the equivariant Chow cohomology ring of a toric variety is naturally isomorphic to the ring of integral piecewise polynomial functions on the associated fan. This gives a large class of singular spaces for which localization holds in equivariant Chow cohomology with integer coefficients. We also compute the equivariant Chow cohomology of toric prevarieties and general complex hypertoric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions.
The operational Chow cohomology classes of a complete toric variety are identified with certain functions, called Minkowski weights, on the corresponding fan. The natural product of Chow cohomology classes makes the Minkowski weights into a commutative ring; the product is computed by a displacement in the lattice, which corresponds to a deformation in the toric variety. We show that, with rational coefficients, this ring embeds in McMullen's polytope algebra, and that the polytope algebra is the direct limit of these Chow rings, over all compactifications of a given torus. In the nonsingular …
This paper was submitted to the Oberwolfach Conference "Combinatorial Convexity and Algebraic Geometry", October 1997. Let $M={\mathbb Z}^r$. For convex lattice polytopes $P,P'$ in ${\mathbb R}^r$, when is $(M \cap P)+ (M \cap P') = M \cap (P + P')$? Without any additional condition, the equality obviously does not hold. When the pair $(M,P)$ corresponds to a complex projective toric variety $X$ and an ample divisor $D$ on $X$, it is reasonable to assume that $P'$ corresponds to an ample (or, more generally, a nef) divisor $D'$ on the same $X$. Then the question correspons to the surjectivity …
A $n$-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano variety $X$ is called Del Pezzo variety if the anticanonical class $-K_X$ is a $(n-1)$-multiple of a Cartier divisor. Our purpose is to give a complete biregular classfication of Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties in arbitrary dimension $n \geq 2$. We show that up to isomorphism there exist exactly 37 Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties of dimension $n$ which are not cones over $(n-1)$-dimensional Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties. Our results are closely related to the classification of all Minkowski sum decompositions of reflexive polygons due to…
Jet ampleness of line bundles generalizes very ampleness by requiring the existence of enough global sections to separate not just points and tangent vectors, but also their higher order analogues called jets. We give sharp bounds guaranteeing that a line bundle on a projective toric variety is $k$-jet ample in terms of its intersection numbers with the invariant curves, in terms of the lattice lengths of the edges of its polytope, in terms of the higher concavity of its piecewise linear function and in terms of its Seshadri constant. For example, the tensor power $k+n-2$ of an ample line bund…
For a complete, smooth toric variety Y, we describe the graded vector space T_Y^1. Furthermore, we show that smooth toric surfaces are unobstructed and that a smooth toric surface is rigid if and only if it is Fano. For a given toric surface we then construct homogeneous deformations by means of Minkowski decompositions of polyhedral subdivisions, compute their images under the Kodaira-Spencer map, and show that they span T_Y^1.
For affine toric varieties, the vector space T1 (containing the infinitesimal deformations) will be interpreted via Minkowski summands of cross cuts of the defining polyhedral cone. This result will be applied to study the deformation theory of (in particular non-isolated) three-dimensional Gorenstein singularities.
For a given lattice polytope $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, consider the space $\mathcal{L}_P$ of trivariate polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, whose Newton polytopes are contained in $P$. We give an upper bound for the maximum number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-zeros of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ in terms of the Minkowski length of $P$ and $q$, the size of the field. Consequently, this produces lower bounds for the minimum distance of toric codes defined by evaluating elements of $\mathcal{L}_P$ at the points of the algebraic torus $(\mathbb{F}_q^*)^3$. Our approach is based on understanding f…
We give a complete description of the cohomology ring $A^*(\overline Z)$ of a compactification of a linear subvariety $Z$ of a torus in a smooth toric variety whose fan $Σ$ is supported on the tropicalization of $Z$. It turns out that cocycles on $\overline Z$ canonically correspond to Minkowski weights on $Σ$ and that the cup product is described by the intersection product on the tropical matroid variety $\operatorname{Trop}(Z)$.
For an affine, toric Q-Gorenstein variety Y (given by a lattice polytope Q) the vector space T^1 of infinitesimal deformations is related to the complexified vector spaces of rational Minkowski summands of faces of Q. Moreover, assuming Y to be an isolated, at least 3-dimensional singularity, Y will be rigid unless it is even Gorenstein and dim Y=3 (dim Q=2). For this particular case, so-called toric deformations of Y correspond to Minkowski decompositions of Q into a sum of lattice polygons. Their Kodaira-Spencer-map can be interpreted in a very natural way. We regard the projective variety P…
In the case of two-dimensional cyclic quotient singularities, we classify all one-parameter toric deformations in terms of certain Minkowski decompositions. In particular, we describe to which components each such deformation maps, show how to induce each deformation from a versal family, give explicit equations for each deformation, describe the singularities in the general fibers, and construct the corresponding partial simultaneous resolutions.
We apply ideas from intersection theory on toric varieties to tropical intersection theory. We introduce mixed Minkowski weights on toric varieties which interpolate between equivariant and ordinary Chow cohomology classes on complete toric varieties. These objects fit into the framework of tropical intersection theory developed by Allermann and Rau. Standard facts about intersection theory on toric varieties are applied to show that the definitions of tropical intersection product on tropical cycles in $\R^n$ given by Allermann-Rau and Mikhalkin are equivalent. We introduce an induced tropica…
We find a relation between mixed volumes of several polytopes and the convex hull of their union, deducing it from the following fact: the mixed volume of a collection of polytopes only depends on the product of their support functions (rather than on the individual support functions). For integer polytopes, this dependence is essentially a certain specialization of the isomorphism between two well-known combinatorial models for the cohomology of toric varieties, however, this construction has not been extended to arbitrary polytopes so far (partially due to the lack of combinatorial tools cap…
The Chow polytope of an algebraic cycle in a torus depends only on its tropicalisation. Generalising this, we associate a Chow polytope to any abstract tropical variety in a tropicalised toric variety. Several significant polyhedra associated to tropical varieties are special cases of our Chow polytope. The Chow polytope of a tropical variety $X$ is given by a simple combinatorial construction: its normal subdivision is the Minkowski sum of $X$ and a reflected skeleton of the fan of the ambient toric variety.
On a K-unstable toric variety we show the existence of an optimal destabilising convex function. We show that if this is piecewise linear then it gives rise to a decomposition into semistable pieces analogous to the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of an unstable vector bundle. We also show that if the Calabi flow exists for all time on a toric variety then it minimises the Calabi functional. In this case the infimum of the Calabi functional is given by the supremum of the normalised Futaki invariants over all destabilising test-configurations, as predicted by a conjecture of Donaldson.
Topologically, compact toric varieties can be constructed as identification spaces: they are quotients of the product of a compact torus and the order complex of the fan. We give a detailed proof of this fact, extend it to the non-compact case and draw several, mostly cohomological conclusions. In particular, we show that the equivariant integral cohomology of a toric variety can be described in terms of piecewise polynomials on the fan if the ordinary integral cohomology is concentrated in even degrees. This generalizes a result of Bahri-Franz-Ray to the non-compact case. We also investigate …
For a toric variety X_P determined by a rational polyhedral fan P in a lattice N, Payne shows that the equivariant Chow cohomology of X_P is the Sym(N)--algebra C^0(P) of integral piecewise polynomial functions on P. We use the Cartan-Eilenberg spectral sequence to analyze the associated reflexive sheaf on Proj(N), showing that the Chern classes depend on subtle geometry of P and giving criteria for the splitting of the sheaf as a sum of line bundles. For certain fans associated to the reflection arrangement A_n, we describe a connection between C^0(P) and logarithmic vector fields tangent to …
In stochastic analysis, a standard method to study a path is to work with its signature. This is a sequence of tensors of different order that encode information of the path in a compact form. When the path varies, such signatures parametrize an algebraic variety in the tensor space. The study of these signature varieties builds a bridge between algebraic geometry and stochastics, and allows a fruitful exchange of techniques, ideas, conjectures and solutions. In this paper we study the signature varieties of two very different classes of paths. The class of rough paths is a natural extension o…
We present an explicit expression for the normalized height of a projective toric variety. This expression decomposes as a sum of local contributions, each term being the integral of a certain function, concave and piecewise linear-affine. More generally, we obtain an explicit expression for the normalized multiheight of a torus with respect to several monomial embeddings. The set of functions introduced behaves as an arithmetic analog of the polytope classically associated with the torus action. Besides the formulae for the height and multiheight, we show that this object behaves in a natural…
Given a Laurent polynomial f, one can form the period of f: this is a function of one complex variable that plays an important role in mirror symmetry for Fano manifolds. Mutations are a particular class of birational transformations acting on Laurent polynomials in two variables; they preserve the period and are closely connected with cluster algebras. We propose a higher-dimensional analog of mutation acting on Laurent polynomials f in n variables. In particular we give a combinatorial description of mutation acting on the Newton polytope P of f, and use this to establish many basic facts ab…
Let $N\subset \RR^{r}$ be a lattice, and let $°\colon N \to \CC$ be a piecewise-linear function that is linear on the cones of a complete rational polyhedral fan. Under certain conditions on $°$, the data $(N,°)$ determines a function $f\colon {\HHH}\to \CC$ that is a holomorphic modular form of weight $r$ for the congruence subgroup $Γ_{1} (l) $. Moreover, by considering all possible pairs $(N ,°)$, we obtain a natural subring ${\TTT} (l)$ of modular forms with respect to $Γ_{1} (l) $. We construct an explicit set of generators for $\TTT (l)$, and show that ${\TTT} (l)$ is stable under the ac…
We apply a Mayer-Vietoris sequence argument to identify the Atiyah-Segal equivariant complex K-theory rings of certain toric varieties with rings of integral piecewise Laurent polynomials on the associated fans. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for this identification to hold for toric varieties of complex dimension 2, including smooth and singular cases. We prove that it always holds for smooth toric varieties, regardless of whether or not the fan is polytopal or complete. Finally, we introduce the notion of fans with "distant singular cones," and prove that the identification h…
The paper establishes a formula for enumeration of curves of arbitrary genus in toric surfaces. It turns out that such curves can be counted by means of certain lattice paths in the Newton polygon. The formula was announced earlier in http://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0209253. The result is established with the help of the so-called tropical algebraic geometry. This geometry allows one to replace complex toric varieties with the Euclidean n-space and holomorphic curves with certain piecewise-linear graphs there.
We show that the tropical projective Grassmannian of planes is homeomorphic to a closed subset of the analytic Grassmannian in Berkovich's sense by constructing a continuous section to the tropicalization map. Our main tool is an explicit description of the algebraic coordinate rings of the toric strata of the Grassmannian. We determine the fibers of the tropicalization map and compute the initial degenerations of all the toric strata. As a consequence, we prove that the tropical multiplicities of all points in the tropical projective Grassmannian are equal to one. Finally, we determine a piec…
We generalize the standard combinatorial techniques of toric geometry to the study of log Calabi-Yau surfaces. The character and cocharacter lattices are replaced by certain integral linear manifolds described by Gross, Hacking, and Keel, and monomials on toric varieties are replaced with the canonical theta functions which GHK defined using ideas from mirror symmetry. We describe the tropicalizations of theta functions and use them to generalize the dual pairing between the character and cocharacter lattices. We use this to describe generalizations of dual cones, Newton and polar polytopes, M…
This paper is devoted to the construction of polynomial 2-surfaces which possess a polynomial area element. In particular we study these surfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^3$ (where they are equivalent to the PN surfaces) and in the Minkowski space $\mathbb R^{3,1}$ (where they provide the MOS surfaces). We show generally in real vector spaces of any dimension and any metric that the Gram determinant of a parametric set of subspaces is a perfect square if and only if the Gram determinant of its orthogonal complement is a perfect square. Consequently the polynomial surfaces of a given d…
Let $V(I)$ be a polarized projective variety or a subvariety of a product of projective spaces and let $A$ be its (multi-)homogeneous coordinate ring. Given a full-rank valuation $\mathfrak v$ on $A$ we associate weights to the coordinates of the projective space, respectively, the product of projective spaces. Let $w_{\mathfrak v}$ be the vector whose entries are these weights. Our main result is that the value semi-group of $\mathfrak v$ is generated by the images of the generators of $A$ if and only if the initial ideal of $I$ with respect to $w_{\mathfrak v}$ is prime. We further show that…
We study the operational bivariant theory associated to the covariant theory of Grothendieck groups of coherent sheaves, and prove that it has many geometric properties analogous to those of operational Chow theory. This operational K-theory agrees with Grothendieck groups of vector bundles on smooth varieties, admits a natural map from the Grothendieck group of perfect complexes on general varieties, satisfies descent for Chow envelopes, and is A^1-homotopy invariant. Furthermore, we show that the operational K-theory of a complete linear variety is dual to the Grothendieck group of coherent …
