It is conjectured by de Jong that, if $X$ is a connected smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with trivial étale fundamental group, any isocrystal on on $X/W$ is trivial. We prove this conjecture under two additional assumptions. Version 2: the main change is an addendum. We prove that if $X$ is a connected smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with trivial étale fundamental group, any infinitesimal isocrystal on $X/W$ is trivial. To this aim we wrote some general facts on such infinitesimal isocrystals over W which are missing in the literature.
We prove the overholonomicity of overconvergent $F$-isocrystals over smooth varieties. This implies that the notions of overholonomicity and devissability in overconvergent $F$-isocrystals are equivalent. Then the overholonomicity is stable under tensor products. So, the overholonomicity gives a $p$-adic cohomology stable under Grothendieck's cohomological operations.
This article is the second one of a series of three articles devoted to direct images of isocrystals: here we consider convergent isocrystals with Frobenius structure. Let V be a complete discrete valuation ring, with residue field k = V/m of characteristic p > 0 and fraction field K of characteristic 0. Firstly we characterize convergent F-isocrystals on a smooth affine k-scheme. Secondly, for perfect k and after a detailed exposition of the Teichmûller liftings, especially for the affine rigid line, we derive the existence of Frobenius isomorphisms on the direct images of convergent F-isocry…
We prove constancy of Newton polygons of all convergent $F$-isocrystals on Abelian varieties over finite fields. Applying the constancy, we prove the isotriviality of projective smooth families of curves over Abelian varieties. We also study the isotriviality over simply connected projective smooth varieties.
In 2010 de Jong proposed a $p$-adic version of Gieseker's conjecture: if $X$ is a smooth, simply connected projective variety, then any isocrystal on $X$ is constant. This was proven by Esnault and Shiho under some additional assumptions. We show that the conjecture holds in the case of a non-proper variety with trivial tame fundamental group and for rank 1 log extendable isocrystals.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of parabolic log convergent isocrystals on smooth varieties endowed with a simple normal crossing divisor, which is a kind of $p$-adic analogue of the notion of parabolic bundles on smooth varieties defined by Seshadri, Maruyama-Yokogawa, Iyer-Simpson, Borne. We prove that the equivalence between the category of $p$-adic representations of the fundamental group and the category of unit-root convergent $F$-isocrystals (proven by Crew) induces the equivalence between the category of $p$-adic representations of the tame fundamental group and the category of …
It is conjectured by de Jong that, if $X$ is a connected projective smooth variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with trivial etale fundamental group, any convergent isocrystal $\mathcal{E}$ on $X$ is trivial. We discuss this conjecture when $X$ is liftable to characteristic zero, and prove the triviality of $\mathcal{E}$ in this case under certain conditions on (semi)stability.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic p>0 and W the ring of Witt vectors of k. In this article, we give a new proof of the Frobenius descent for convergent isocrystals on a variety over k relative to W. This proof allows us to deduce an analogue of the de Rham complexes comparaison theorem of Berthelot without assuming a lifting of the Frobenius morphism. As an application, we prove a version of Berthelot's conjecture on the preservation of convergent isocrystals under the higher direct image by a smooth proper morphism of k-varieties.
Let $k$ be a perfect field of positive characteristic and let $X$ be a smooth irreducible quasi-compact scheme over $k$. The Drinfeld-Kedlaya theorem states that for an irreducible $F$-isocrystal on $X$, the gap between consecutive generic slopes is bounded by one. In this note we provide a new proof of this theorem. Our proof utilizes the theory of $F$-isocrystals with $r$-log decay. We first show that a rank one $F$-isocrystal with $r$-log decay is overconvergent if $r<1$. Next, we establish a connection between slope gaps and the rate of log-decay of the slope filtration. The Drinfeld-Kedla…
Let X be a smooth variety over a field of characteristic p>0. We prove that the forgetful functor from the category of overconvergent F-isocrystals on X to the category of convergent F-isocrystals is fully faithful. The argument uses the quasi-unipotence theorem for overconvergent F-isocrystals (recently proved independently by Andre, Mebkhout, and the author; see math.AG/0110124), plus arguments of de Jong. In the process, we establish a theorem of Quillen-Suslin type (i.e., every finite projective module is free) over rings of overconvergent power series.
Let $X_0$ be a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ and let $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ be an irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X_0$. We show that if a subobject of minimal slope of the associated convergent $F$-isocrystal $\mathcal E_0$ admits a non-zero morphism to $\mathcal O_{X_0}$ as a convergent isocrystal, then $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal O^{\dagger}_{X_0}$ as an overconvergent isocrystal. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Kedlaya. The key ingredient in the proof is the study of the monodromy group …
We show a Lefschetz theorem for irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on smooth varieties defined over a finite field. We derive several consequences from it.
For a Shimura variety of Hodge type with hyperspecial level at a prime $p$, the Newton stratification on its special fiber at $p$ is a stratification defined in terms of the isomorphism class of the Dieudonne module of parameterized abelian varieties endowed with a certain fixed set of Frobenius-invariant crystalline cycles ("$F$-isocrystal with $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$-structure"). There has been a conjectural group-theoretic description of the F-isocrystals that are expected to show up in the special fiber. We confirm this conjecture by two different methods. More precisely, for any $F$-isocrystal…
Let $X$ be a smooth scheme over a finite field. It is conjectured that a convergent $F$-isocrystal on $X$ is overconvergent if its restriction to every curve contained in $X$ is overconvergent. Using the theory of étale and crystalline companions, we establish a weaker version of this criterion in which we also assume that the wild local monodromy of the restrictions to curves is trivialized by pullback along a single dominant morphism to $X$.
The crystalline Chern classes of the value of a locally free crystal vanish on a smooth variety defined over a perfect field. Out of this we conclude new cases of de Jong's conjecture relating the geometric étale fundamental group of a smooth projective variety defined over a perfect field and the triviality of its category of isocrystals. We also discuss the case of the Gauß-Manin convergent isocrystal.
The minimal slope conjecture, which was proposed by K.Kedlaya, asserts that two irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on a smooth variety are isomorphic to each other if both minimal slope constitutions of slope filtrations are isomorphic to each other. We affirmatively solve the minimal slope conjecture for overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on curves and for overconvergent $\bar{\mathbb Q}_p$-$F$-isocrystals on smooth varieties over finite fields.
In this paper, we establish a criterion for an overconvergent isocrystal on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic $p>0$ to extend logarithmically to its smooth compactification whose complement is a strict normal crossing divisor. This is a generalization of a result of Kedlaya, who treated the case of unipotent monodromy. Our result is regarded as a $p$-adic analogue of the theory of canonical extension of regular singular integrable connections on smooth varieties of characteristic 0.
We seek an appropriate definition for a Shimura curve of Hodge type in positive characteristics via characterizing curves in positive characteristics which are reduction of Shimura curve over $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper, we study the liftablity of a curve in the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties over $k, \text{char} k=p$. We show that in the generic ordinary case, some tensor decomposition of the isocrystal associated to the family imply that this curve can be lifted to a Shimura curve.
This paper is a complement to the paper "On $p$-adic differential equations on semistable varieties" written by V. Di Proietto. Given an open variety over a DVR with semistable reduction, the author constructed in that paper a fully faithful algebraization functor from the category of certain log overconvergent isocrystals on the special fiber to the category of modules with regular integrable connection on the generic fiber. In this paper, we prove that, with convenable hypothesis, this functor is a tensor functor whose essential image is closed under extensions and subquotients. As a consequ…
For varieties over a perfect field of characteristic p, etale cohomology with Q_l-coefficients is a Weil cohomology theory only when l is not equal to p; the corresponding role for l = p is played by Berthelot's rigid cohomology. In that theory, the coefficient objects analogous to lisse l-adic sheaves are the overconvergent F-isocrystals. This expository article is a brief user's guide for these objects, including some features shared with l-adic cohomology (purity, weights) and some features exclusive to the p-adic case (Newton polygons, convergence and overconvergence). The relationship bet…
We prove that for an indecomposable convergent or overconvergent F-isocrystal on a smooth irreducible variety over a perfect field of characteristic p, the gap between consecutive slopes at the generic point cannot exceed 1. (This may be thought of as a crystalline analogue of the following consequence of Griffiths transversality: for an indecomposable variation of complex Hodge structures, there cannot be a gap between nonzero Hodge numbers.) As an application, we deduce a refinement of a result of V.Lafforgue on the slopes of Frobenius of an l-adic local system. We also prove similar stateme…
In this article we give a survey of the various forms of Berthelot's conjecture and some of the implications between them. By proving some comparison results between pushforwards of overconvergent isocrystals and those of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, we manage to deduce some cases of the conjecture from Caro's results on the stability of overcoherence under pushforward via a smooth and proper morphism of varieties. In particular, we show that Ogus' convergent pushforward of an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal under a smooth and projective morphism is overconvergent.
An irreducible integrable connection $(E,\nabla)$ on a smooth projective complex variety $X$ is called rigid if it gives rise to an isolated point of the corresponding moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{dR}(X)$. According to Simpson's motivicity conjecture, irreducible rigid flat connections are of geometric origin, that is, arise as subquotients of a Gauß-Manin connection of a family of smooth projective varieties defined on an open dense subvariety of $X$. In this article we study mod $p$ reductions of irreducible rigid connections and establish results which confirm Simpson's prediction. In particu…
Given a projective variety X defined over a finite field, the zeta function of divisors attempts to count all irreducible, codimension one subvarieties of X, each measured by their projective degree. When the dimension of X is greater than one, this is a purely p-adic function, convergent on the open unit disk. Four conjectures are expected to hold, the first of which is p-adic meromorphic continuation to all of C_p. When the divisor class group (divisors modulo linear equivalence) of X has rank one, then all four conjectures are known to be true. In this paper, we discuss the higher rank case…
Let $K$ be a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ and let $X$ be Drinfel'd's symmetric space of dimension $d$ over $K$. Let $Γ\subset {\rm SL}_{d+1}(K)$ be a cocompact discrete (torsionfree) subgroup and let ${X}_Γ=Γ\backslash {X}$, a smooth projective ${K}$-variety. In this paper we investigate the de Rham and log crystalline (log convergent) cohomology of local systems on $X_Γ$ arising from $K[Γ]$-modules. (I) We prove the monodromy weight conjecture in this context. To do so we work out, for a general strictly semistable proper scheme of pure relative dimension $d$ over a cdvr of mixed chara…
